KEITHMcMAHON

Good afternoon and welcome to Bayliss Avenue for today’s Ryman League Division One North fixture against Needham Market, as we enjoy Non-League Day.

Firstly, may I take this opportunity to welcome Mark Morsley and his Needham side here this afternoon - enjoy your short stay with us and have a safe journey home later on.

Well, it’s been a strange fortnight since my last set of notes! The two weeks couldn’t have been much different, with a week of good football and hard work producing a good result, and then a week of a poor performance and poor work rate seeing us bow out of the FA Cup - to top it off, the pitch has been difficult, too!

Last time out here at the SCT saw us beat a very good Cray side 2-0. Our performance was exceptional right from the off; we worked really hard and created plenty of chances.

We ought to have been three or four up by the break, but only came in 1-0 thanks to a wonder goal from Tyrus Gordon-Young.

The second half was a pretty similar story, and Rob Carter’s well-taken goal added a second. We defended superbly from their attempts to get back into the game, and Lewis Tozer was on a different level.

The three points keeps us on course with twelve points from our six games, as well as three wins from three at home - this is what you need to do to stay in touch with the league.

Last weekend saw us travel to South Park in the FA Cup. I was very confident heading into the game as the performances have been getting better, but I was honestly amazed at just how poor we were.

We lost the game 2-1 and, even though we were really poor, I still think we ought to have got something from the game. It was a bright start on a poor pitch - it was difficult to run with the ball as it was long, and players

kept getting their studs caught in it, too. Two of their players even had to be stretchered off quite seriously as a result, but this isn’t an excuse.

We started brightly and went a goal up when Sean Roberts won the ball in the air and Stuart Zanone finished well for his first goal. I’m really pleased for Stuart as he’s had a bit of pressure on him since returning, but I’m sure he’ll score plenty more now the first one has gone in.

We should have gone two goals up, but we missed chances. After this, it seemed as though we decided to sit back, stop working and switch off which allowed them back into the game. We conceded two awful goals to come in 2-1 down at the break.

I was not happy, but despite having most of the possession after the interval, I thought we lacked any real desire to score and it was only in the

04 THAMESMEAD TOWNv Needham Market

THE MANAGER

Page 5: Thamesmead Town v Needham Market

final ten minutes or so that we seemed to give it a real go and want to win - we just couldn’t find the equalising goal, though.

It was extremely disappointing as the result would have been massive for the club - we could really have done with the prize money. A couple of things had happened in the build up to the game that left us relying on the money, and I was really upset seeing how we had played.

I was honest with the lads about the situation after the game, and whilst they were a little bit shocked, I think it was the best way forward. We had a meeting on Tuesday and all of the players have agreed to stay for the time being and shown their commitment to me and the club - I thank them for that.

We’re still in a good league position

and, apart from the last week, it’s been a good start. I now look for characters - players who want to put last week’s disappointment behind them and bounce back with another win today.

It isn’t going to be easy though as we take on a Needham Market side who have started the campaign with six wins from seven. We’ll have to be at our absolute best this afternoon if we’re going to keep our perfect home record in tact, but I’m sure the lads will be up for it and want to give a response.

We need to look around at one another, stick together and get through this tough period. If we can do that, we’ll become a better team because of it.

Enjoy the game,Keith

week, it’s been a good start to the season so

I’m now looking for characters to bounce

back & put it behind

them”

THE MANAGER

TERRYHILL

Good afternoon everyone - firstly, can I welcome the Needham Market players, officials and supporters to Sporting Club Thamesmead. We hope you enjoy your time with us and wish you a safe journey home.

It’s been a fortnight since our last home game, where we came away with a 2-0 victory over Cray Wanderers.

Unfortunately, though, we then travelled to South Park in the FA Cup where we lost 2-1. I’m sure that Keith will go more in-depth on our performance, but we had started brightly and took the lead thanks to Stuart Zanone.

Five minutes later, though, we conceded a goal from a corner and you could see that it was coming as we hadn’t got to grips with their front two men who were winning most of the aerial battles.

Again, we conceded another poor goal on the stroke of half-time and, although we mostly dominated the second half and the introduction of Rashid Kamara and Adem Ramadan gave us some spark, we couldn’t find the net.

This afternoon’s game is, of course, a celebration of Non-League Day and we welcome anybody to the SCT who perhaps doesn’t normally pay us a visit.

I’m sure you’ll enjoy your afternoon, as we take second-placed Needham Market, who have won six of their seven games so far. It is sure to be a stern test for us and

they had another good win last week, beating Soham Town 1-0 in the FA Cup.

The boys certainly need to up their game from last week’s performance if we are to get something this afternoon, as last week was a disappointing showing.

We’ve started the league campaign solidly though, so let’s hope we can do just that.

Enjoy the game,Terry

“The boys certainly need to up their game from last week’s performance today, but we have started solidly in the league campaign so let’s hope we can do just that”

THE CHAIRMAN

ALANWOODWARD

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to the SCT for today’s game against Needham Market.

The games are coming thick and fast at the moment, so the recovery time for players is less than usual. We’re carrying a few knocks at the moment, but Eel is back in training again which is a plus and, whilst Fri is troubled with a knee problem, Carly and I are working hard to get him fit.

The Brentwood game wasn’t our best showing, but it also proved we can grind out a result when our backs are against the wall.

We then faced a good Cray side who shouldn’t be taken for granted - they have many good players and the game was won on workrate as a collective group - the boys got stuck in together and managed to get their just rewards.

Credit to a couple of the lads who had to battle on through the pain barrier for the result.

Last week was a new ground for me and the club as he headed over to South Park for our first FA Cup game this season. I don’t want to go on about the game, but our performance wasn’t up to scratch.

All I can say about the result is that

it hurts the club in more ways than one. I know how hard every penny is worked for at this club, and so to get knocked out in the manner that we did is a massive blow.

Thamesmead Town is a small club, held together by a small group of people who all work extremely hard and put their hands into their pockets when we need them to.

Our gates aren’t very good so the funds are always tight, and we’ve had hard times in the past but we always battle on.

I’ve been with the club now for about eight years, and it’s had its ups and downs during that time. On a personal note, things aren’t being made easy for us as a group and this puts us into situations that could be avoided. People need to look at themselves and be open with what they expect of us as a club - it’s hard enough to run a football club without obstacles being put in your way by outside parties.

Anyway, enjoy the game today and make sure we all stick together.

Cheers,Alan

NEEDHAMMARKET

Much-fancied Needham Market arrive at the SCT for Non-League Day today looking to extend their bright start.

The Marketmen will be looking for it to be a case of third time lucky this season after two near-misses in the promotion race in recent years.

Last summer saw decent investment go into the side with the additions of well-known Football League players such as Ian Westlake and Kem Izzet, to supplement the never-ending stream of goals coming from Sam Newson.

However, it wasn’t to be as the side narrowly missed out by losing in the play-offs to eventual winners Witham Town, but with a settled squad this season, Mark Morsley expects his side to be better placed to make a go of it.

And early impressions would suggest that is a good bet. Starting the campaign with six straight wins, the Marketmen were knocked off of top spot in midweek as they dropped their first points of the season in a 2-1 defeat at home to Brentwood.

Despite losing their perfect start this week, it was only last week that the Bloomfields side showed their fighting credentials as they came back from a goal down at AFC Sudbury to steal all three points following Kem Izzet’s sending off.

“Every one of my Needham boys were brave and wanted the ball and to play the game the right way,” Morsley praised after the game. “The unity and spirit in that dressing room is as good as I have seen for some time.”

With an early game in hand, the Mead will know that victory this afternoon could spell out a real intention to make a go of the title race this season, and we’re sure to be in for an interesting battle out there.

CLUB HISTORYNeedham Market Football Club was officially formed in 1919 although records do indicate that games were played in the late 1890’s in the town.

The original home for the club was Young’s Meadow until a move to Crowley Park was the base until 1996. The club then moved and opened a new development called ‘Bloomfields’.

Over the yeas the club has won many trophies with one of the most notable being crowned champions of the Senior Division of The Suffolk & Ipswich League in the 1995 / 1996 season. This coincided with the opening of ‘Bloomfields’ and a new chapter in the clubs history, as we then applied for promotion to the Jewson (now Ridgeons) League Division One which was duly accepted.

Other honours won by the club include The Suffolk & Ipswich League Cup in the 1977 / 1978 season and the 1979 / 1980 season. The Suffolk Football Association Junior Cup was won in the season 1984 / 1985 and a successful trip to Portman Road the home of Ipswich Town Football Club; saw the club victorious in The Suffolk Football Association Senior Cup in the season of 1989 / 1990 and again in the season of 2004 / 2005. The final was also reached in this competition in the seasons of 1970 / 1971, 1979 / 1980, 1998 / 1999 and 1999 / 2000, unfortunately having to settle for runners-up spot on each occasion.

After being in The Ridgeons League Division 1 for a number of seasons we finally finished as runners up in the season of 2004 / 2005. This was a big thing for the club and to the manager at that time Mark Morsley for all his efforts in getting the club promotion. Manager Mark Morsley left the club at the end of the season under good terms after being appointed manager of AFC Sudbury who had been newly promoted to The Ryman League.

The club acted swiftly and appointed Danny Laws and Chris Tracey as joint managers for the 2006 / 2007 season. In

their first season of management they assembled a very young and talented squad of players who gained experience and some notable results.

For season 2007 / 2008 Danny Laws is manager after Chris Tracey decides to return to AFC Sudbury. This season proves to be fantastic for Danny and the players as the club moves to a new level making historic landmarks along the way. Finishing runners-up in the Ridgeons League Premier Division and losing Semi-finalists in The FA Carlsberg Vase losing out to eventual winners Kirkham & Wesham.

For the season 2009 / 2010 the football club had an academy based at ‘Bloomfields’ known as Suffolk New College Football Scheme, and the season would be the most successful in the club’s history. The 1st Team not only won The Eastern Counties League Premier Division for the first time, but also The Eastern Counties League – League Challenge Cup to make it a Domestic Double; a feat not achieved for some 15 years. A third successive Suffolk FA Premier Cup Final was also achieved only to be defeated by a very strong Ipswich Town XI. However the team did not disgrace themselves and came away with their heads held high. For the second consecutive season, the Quarter Finals of the National FA Carlsberg Vase Competition were also reached only to once again be knocked out this stage.

The 2010 / 2011 Season saw a new chapter in Needham Market Football Clubs history as for the first time Step 4 Football awaited in the form of The Ryman League Division One North. The anticipation, optimism and confidence was very high at the start of the season but no one was getting carried away as consolidation in the league was the priority.

Well who would have thought the season we were to have. Challenging at the top of the league for the whole season with East Thurrock United who would eventually go on and win the championship, but we would have another bite of the cherry as

2nd place was cemented in the league and a home semi-final play off. Unfortunately we would go on to lose this match 3-1 to Brentwood Town.

A fourth consecutive Final appearance in the Suffolk FA Premier Cup was also to be achieved but unfortunately a 2-0 defeat would ensue to Ryman Premier Division side Bury Town.

Season 2011 / 2012 saw the club open its doors to a new venture as we introduced a full time Academy Programme where 16-18 year olds would be studying for an NVQ in Sports Development half of the day and coached by Ex-Professional player Kevin Horlock the remainder of the day. In truth the scheme was a massive success with the lads on the scheme also forming our reserve side who had an excellent season.

They finished runners up in the Ridgeons Reserve League North Division, Semi-Finalists in The Suffolk FA Senior Reserve Cup and reached the 3rd Qualifying Round of The FA Youth Cup (the furthest the club had ever reached). The future of this football club may well come from these up and coming players who will continue to develop and under their teaching, coaching and leadership the Academy will grow from strength to strength.

The First Team once again challenged for The Ryman League Division One North Title up until Christmas when a run of bad results ended the automatic promotion route but the club remained in the play off positions for the remainder of the season. We were top scorers in the division with 104 goals.

Victory in the play off semi-final away at Tilbury in shall we say a mammoth match!! set up a play off final 36 hours later at league runners up Enfield Town. In truth this was too short a turnaround and we were both physically and mentality drained unfortunately losing the game 1-0. Once again the club continues to punch well above its weight, and we will be ready for the challenges ahead for the forthcoming season.

ANDREW PLUMMERAndy returns to the Marketmen after spending the majority of last season helping Lowestoft Town achieve the runners up spot in the Ryman Premier Division. He spent his formative years at Ipswich Town, having a loan period at Oxford Utd, but when he was released in 2008 his professional career moved to Ireland. While he was there he played for Glenavon and Bangor City.

OLLIE BROWNOllie joins us having enjoyed a successful season last at Hadleigh Utd. He spent his youth development at Ipswich Town but when he was unable to archive a permanent deal he joined his Dad Ian at Whitton Utd where he gained a reputation as a raiding right back.

DARRYL COAKLEYDarryl has penned a 2 yr deal with us this following a transfer from Mildenhall Town. His career as a left back started at Ipswich Town where upon his release he joined Cambridge United as a scholar. During that time be went on loan to Cambridge City and Bury Town plus he made a number of appearances in the Blue Square Premier Division for the U’s. Still only 22 he has an excellent pedigree.

RYAN CRISPRyan has joined us from Leiston FC on a permanent deal following a successful loan period. A powerful left-footed striker he had a massive impact playing for Paul Tong at Kirkley & Pakefield and last Summer he was tailed by a number of clubs, Needham being one, but elected to join the North Suffolk Ryman Premier club. He has agreed a two-season deal and we hope will be an integral part of our future.

CHRIS HOGGChris started his football career at the York City system but was signed by Ipswich Town (at the time a Premier League team) in 2001 becoming a Pro in 2002. Due to the financial restrictions Ipswich had in 2004 he was sold to Hibernian.

Chris was there until 2011 where he made 173 appearances and was Captain in 2008/2009 & 2009/2010. Ex Ipswich and England Centre Half Terry Butcher then signed him for Inverness Caledonian Thistle and he made 25 appearances over two years but a serious knee injury restricted these. At the end of season 2012/2013 Chris moved back to his wife’s hometown and he re-trained as an Electrician plus he looked to develop his coaching skills. Chris is with us for this season and our manager Mark Morsley hopes the contract of this experienced defender can be extended to include next season.

SAM NUNNSam joins us having spent a number of years at Bury Town. He joined the Ram Meadow youth set up and progressed to become a regular member of their first team. He was an integral part of the team that was promoted into the Ryman Premier and enjoyed great success there. Still only 24 he has agreed a 2 yr deal with us and brings a wealth of experience for someone at that age.

LUKE INGRAMAnother product of the Ipswich Town Academy, Luke joins us from Bury Town where he was a part of their Ryman

Prem Squad although he did finish last season at AFC Sudbury. He has represented Suffolk at U16, 17 & 18 level and is a player with real pace who plays across the midfield.

OLLIE FENNNow in his third season with the club Ollie previously played for Ipswich Town Academy and Irish Premier League side Galway United. A central midfield player with great energy who can also operate as a right sided full back or centre half.

KEIRAN MORPHEWKeiran is the first player to have come through Kevin Horlock’s Needham Academy to sign a contract with the first team. He was given his chance last season with Manager Mark Morsley impressed with what he saw. Still only 19 it is felt he will have a great future at the club.

SAM NEWSON‘Super Sammy Newson’ as the fans cry is a goal machine having scored 58 goals in his last two campaigns. Injuries have denied him more appearances and goals but he will be looking for a bit of lady luck for once. He spent a number years at Stanway Rovers before joining Needham 3 seasons ago. He was asked to go for a trial at Gillingham In late 2011 but a knee injury sustained just beforehand denied him of that chance. He clearly has an eye for a goal and has a great unselfish work ethic for the team.

IAN WESTLAKE‘Westy’ joins us this season having made over 200 professional appearances. His career started at Ipswich Town where he made 113 appearances before being sold to Leeds Utd where he made 47 appearances for the financially troubled club. From Leeds he has played for Brighton, Wycombe, Oldham Ath, Cheltenham Town and finally in Canada for Montreal Impact.

Following a change in the rules regarding overseas players Ian was released and packed up playing. A year later our manager convinced him to come out of retirement a decision we will benefit from fully.

KEM IZZETKem has joined us having spent 12 years at Colchester United making well over 400 professional appearances. An all action midfielder he brings bags of experience from many years as the U’s captain and will be a very positive addition to the squad. He is also working with Kevin Horlock at the Needham Academy.

BRENDON HEATHAnother product of the NMFC Academy, made a number of substitute appearances last season and scored a great first goal against Soham.

GEORGE CLARKEGeorge has attended the NMFC Academy in two spells the second of these ended hen ITFC offered him a place at their Academy. When released by ITFC we were happy to give George a shop window to fulfil his potential. Scored one of the goals against Hadleigh.

“Kem joined after spending 12 years with Colchester United where he was the club captain & made over 400 appearances in the Football League”

THE MEAD ACADEMY

Page 18: Thamesmead Town v Needham Market

Once again, we’re happy to welcome our MP to the SCT today to celebrate Non League Day - as the subject of today’s big feature, Mike Green speaks to Rt Hon Teresa Pearce MP.

Teresa has represented the constituency of Erith and Thamesmead for the Labour Party since the 2010 General Election with a majority of 5,703 which gives her one of the safest Labour held seats in the South East.

But life for Teresa started a long way from London, as she explained: “I was born in Southport, Lancashire and it wasn’t until my Dad was offered a job in London in 1965 when I was 10 that we headed South. My Mum was always keen for adventure so we moved down to London. My parents coming from a small town seaside in Lancashire never really settled here so they moved back on retirement but I stayed as by then I was a Londoner! I worked very hard to lose my Lancashire accent when I started school down here as it was before regional accents were heard on radio and TV and I was teased mercilessly.”

But why politics? “I wanted the world to be a better place for my daughters. I didn’t want them to face the same challenges I had. Wanting things to improve means

sometimes you have to step forward and do it yourself! I have always been political in that I have always been someone who stands up and speaks out but, in fairness, I had never wanted a political career.

“I never really wanted to be an MP. I suppose you could call me the “Reluctant MP”. But when the MP for where I have lived for 30 years (John Austin) said he was retiring I found myself being pushed forward by friends. It was shortly after the expenses scandal which I was furious about, and I kept hearing people say “politicians are all the same”. I thought that it didn’t have to be like that and that I could try to be a different type of MP.”

Teresa was a Bexley councillor before standing for Westminster - was the change something that you always wanted or hoped to do? Teresa replied: “Not really! I served Erith (where I live) for 4 years but didn’t stand for a second term as I had a stressful job that meant it was was not possible to give 100% to both my councillor position and my employment, and I am the type of person that if I do something I want to do it properly. I never enjoyed the council chamber stuff but liked doing the casework for constituents. It’s similar now I enjoy being in my constituency much

more than being in Westminster - I think that’s probably because I would rather spend time with the residents of Erith & Thamesmend than with MPs!”

Relatively few people have experienced what it must be like for a returning officer confirming them as the winner of an election, so we next asked Teresa to explain it to us. She remembered: “It was a strange night as the result didn’t come in until the morning so we were all sleep deprived! So I was proud, exhausted and relieved that we had won. It was a happy moment but also sad as my Dad had died the year before, so he didn’t get to see it.

“He would have been so proud. Especially as he came from a very difficult background. He was taken into care when he was three, along with his older brothers and sisters. He was brought up in a children’s home in Merseyside and to see his daughter become an MP would have been amazing to him.”

Teresa then spoke to us about the negativity that outsiders look and talk about Thamesmead with. She said: “The people who are most negative about Thamesmead are people who have never been there. I think we need to build a bigger community

THE BIG INTERVIEW:

Page 19: Thamesmead Town v Needham Market

spirit and be proud of the things we have to offer. We have great people, open spaces, lakes and canals and a football team.”

Which was a good point to ask Teresa about her first sporting sporting memories. Smiling Teresa told us: “Ah, they were glorious! My first big sporting memory was the year after we moved to London and England won the World Cup. We lived in New Eltham and after the match my whole family went up to Trafalgar Square and jumped in the fountains!

“The other major sporting memory is of Muhammad Ali. We had never seen a boxer who was like a movie star. I played Hockey at school and I was pretty good! Today, I think sport in school is very important as it teaches teamwork and self-discipline. I wouldn’t want kids who are non-sporty pushed into sport, but I think for those who want to do sport more should be available.

“At home, my Dad was a Liverpool supporter and my sister supports Everton, so you can imagine the rows in our house growing up! In order to stay out of it I only support Brugge. My Granddad was born there and my mum’s maiden name was Van Holsbeke. As big a Liverpool fan as he was, Dad took Hillsborough very badly. He

was appalled. He hated The Sun. He never trusted “the establishment”, part of being brought up in care I suppose, so he never accepted the official version of events. It’s just sad he didn’t live to see justice done.

“There are lots of football fans in the House of Commons, but the two from my own side that are most memorable are Steve Rotherham and Andy Burnham for all they have done to bring justice to the Hillsborough families.”

You’re clearly enjoying your role as Thamesmead’s MP, but if you weren’t an MP what would you be doing today? After a slight pause, Teresa replied: “Well, l before I was an MP I had done many jobs from working as a barmaid in Bexley Village to my last job as Senior Manager for PricewaterhouseCoopers.

“I have always worked in whatever job is available to support my family. But, if at this point in my life I wasn’t an MP, I would spend my time doing the thing I love most - being nanna to my four grandhildren. My job is so hectic that I don’t get to spend

enough time with them!”

Finally, we looked to the future and with the next General Election looming ever larger we asked Teresa for her hopes for the next twelve months. She told us, “ I hope to see some sort of solution to the chronic housing problem facing London.

“Without a decent home families don’t stand a chance. I constantly see families where the parents are having to sleep on sofa beds in the living room. That’s the sort of thing I thought we had moved on from. I also hope we can get a bit further forward in obtaining a rover crossing. I have the longest stretch of the Thames of any constituency but not a single crossing!

“But my two main hopes will be that the football club win promotion back to the Ryman Premier, and that the voters of Erith and Thamesmead think that I’ve done enough to secure a second term as their MP!”

THE BIG FEATURE

Page 20: Thamesmead Town v Needham Market
Page 21: Thamesmead Town v Needham Market

I was thinking in the days leading up to the game that the squad was looking good, but it suddenly hit home when I had to leave some very good players out of the matchday squad!

After the final training session, the coaching staff got their heads together and decided that to get the best out of the squad we have, we needed to do something drastic with the formation. Without giving too much away we went 3-5-2 as we felt that this suited the players that were available. I feel that this formation makes up for a particular deficiency we have at the moment but, more importantly, allows us to press the ball as high up the pitch as possible - something that allows us to get on the front foot and work the opposition in their own half.

We started the game ok but I felt that we were too slow on the ball and guilty of not using our width properly and also that we were guilty of playing far too many long straight balls which was forcing our strikers to play with their back to goal. We were playing very well at the back though and dropping off well to receive the ball in midfield but I thought that in the attacking third we were maybe guilty of ball watching and being a bit statuesque. I felt that we were the better team in the first half but we had nothing to show for it as we didn’t use our possession that well.

At half-time we stressed the point that we had to use the width more sensibly, that we needed more movement up top and that we needed to share out the dropping off and supporting in midfield.

The second half started much more livelier and you could see that we were pushing the ball about with more intent and purpose. On about the hour mark we won a free kick on our right hand side. Jordan Chambers put in a great in-swinging free kick that was flicked on by Jordan Sandiford but the last touch came off of a defender and beat the keeper to put us one up. This picked us up a little more and we could have added to our score but it took us another 15 minutes to double our lead when Chris Richards showed great perseverence to force the ball home from close range. We could have scored more goals notably a headed chance for Jamar Dobson and another late chance for Chris Richards but it stayed at 2-0.

Overall, I was pleased with the efforts for a first game, we kept a clean sheet and we could have scored more so all in all, a good start.

The new season has not even reached the grand old age of one month for most clubs yet and the circus that is the managerial roundabout has well and truly kicked-off.

At the time of writing, we have already seen six departures in the Premier League and Football League, with Huddersfield boss Mark Robins losing his job after just one game!

He was quickly followed by Crystal Palace, Leeds, Watford, Colchester and Carlisle all losing their managers, either through resignations or chairmen swinging the axe.

The Non-League scene has also jumped aboard this rollercoaster with at least three managers out the door before September had even begun.

And with the exit of Tony Pulis from Crystal Palace due to apparent disagreements with the chairman, we at NLP HQ decided to look back at some of the strangest managerial departures from the world of Non-League.

Get back from the pub on a Saturday evening and turn the TV on and you’re likely to see one of two people – Leroy Rosenior or Steve Claridge.

Claridge has had one Non-League managerial stint, taking charge of Weymouth in 2003 but it’s his on screen counterpart who sprung to our minds.

Rosenior was put in charge of Torquay in 2007, just after they were relegated to Non-League. It didn’t last long though with the former Fulham striker in charge for a whole ten minutes before Torquay were bought

by a local consortium.

Rosenior was unveiled to the local press at a news conference only for then owner Mike Bateson to almost immediately agree to sell his 51% controlling stake in the club to the consortium, who duly relieved Rosenior of his duties.

Chichester City were in the Sussex County League when they made headlines by sacking Mark Poulton as manager, during a game!

Poulton was taking charge of a cup tie against Redhill when his mobile started ringing. Poulton probably rejected taking the call straight away.

Poulton told the local press: “During the second half I had a call from Gary Walker, one of the directors, who said he was sorry to interrupt me and then told me I’d been sacked!”

It seemed to be the wrong decision though with Chichester throwing a 2-1 lead away to lose 4-2!

Tipton Town parted company with manager Nick Hawkins and his first team staff last weekend despite their FA Cup victory over Sporting Khalsa, with the conversation allegedly taking place on the way home through FaceTime!

The Tipton departure followed in the footsteps of Enfield, Witton, Coalville and Cheshunt in the first few weeks of the 2014-15 season.

There will inevitably be more managerial casualties in the months to come and we can only hope the decisions are remembered in years to come – not necessarily for the right reasons!

MAN OF THEMATCH

Once again, we’re delighted that the Cooper Family are generously sponsoring our Man of the Match award this year.

Each home game, the Man of the Match award will be presented to the winning player by the Cooper family, pictured above, who have once again been very kind as to sponsor the award.

They got on board last season with the award in the first half of the campaign and it proved to be a huge success - the whole team were even awarded the accolade after a resounding win over Maidstone!

The club would like to extend its sincere thanks to the family for their continued support. We’ve listed the award winners from last season for this issue, but who will begin this season’s list this evening?

The award is presented in the Mead Lounge after the game, so why not hang around with us and congratulate the recipient for a fine performance?

THE CLEANSHEETCANCERCHALLENGEThe Clean Sheet Cancer Challenge is a new initiative that the Mead have adopted for the campaign.

The first team goalkeeper will wear a special pink kit and the idea is simple -

the goalkeeper will be sponsored to keep those all-important clean sheets.

You can either sponsor per clean sheet, or simply make a donation for the

complete season in one go.

Rob Budd, whose family unfortunately know all about this terrible disease,

explains: “It was a huge shock when my sister Emma first told the family, but

she fought the disease all the way for three years and was always so positive.

“I miss her every day and she was an inspiration to all who knew her, and she

touched everyone that came into her life.”

Do you want to help and do your own thing to raise some money?

Charlotte Cooper braved the ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ earlier this

afternoon in aid of our appeal, with Buddy amongst those pouring the ice... we’re not sure if that’s called getting your own back or not,

but thank you so very much Charlotte! We’re sure that there might be some pictures in our next programme.

You can back the Clean Sheet Cancer Challenge by visiting www.justiving.com/cleansheet1 to donate today.

Alternatively, find a committee member on matchdays to sign a sponsorship form, or donate cash into the collection boxes all around the Mead Bar - they will be there all season long.

COMMERCIALCORNERWelcome back - it’s Non-League Day at the SCT this afternoon!

As we all know, this afternoon is Non-League Day, and we’re delighted to welcome to the SCT all those of you who have taken advantage of either of our two offers.

The first offer was to the Needham Market fans who are part of the organised trip and have enjoyed half price entry and, hopefully, some of our hospitality, whilst the second offer was to those of you who would normally be spending your Saturday by watching professional football this afternoon with your season tickets, but have instead used it to come and see Ryman Division One North’s game of the day!

We extend our welcome to you all and, hopefully, we’ll all be treated to an entertaining game of football that serves as a great advert for the non-league game - all being well, we hope to welcome you back to the SCT again in the future!

Our FA Cup exit last week was disappointing for the club in more ways than one - not only because we all love a good cup run, but also because the prize money would have been most welcome right now.

It’s made our job in the commercial department even more important, and so that’s why we need your help, more than ever! We have an amazing series of packages available to any company or individual who is willing to support the club, and for full details on them all please come and see me this afternoon.

Back to Non-League Day, and we received a brilliantly encouraging reply from a Charlton season ticket holder that really epitomises the afternoon. After posting that Addicks season ticket holders could enter for half price today, we were told: “Great shout, Mead. I normally head for Concord Rangers (Canvey Island) on a non-Charlton day, but I may just head over to my old manor and join you. As good as the discount is, I won’t bring my ST - teams such as Thamesmead need and deserve the full admission. Good luck for Saturday and the rest of the season.” Sir or madam, if you are here, thanks for your support!

A big and continued thank you to the Cooper family as always for their continued support of the Man of the Match award - the latest winner is skipper Lewis Tozer for his terrific defensive display against Cray Wanderers. To see who the latest addition to the list is, hang back in the Mead Bar at around 5.15pm this afternoon. Cheers,Greenie

“Our FA Cup exit makes the commercial job even more important, so we need your help more than ever!”

FIXTURES & RESULTS 2014/15

FOLLOW EDDIE’S MEAD CAB ON THE ROAD TO:

THURROCKTuesday 16th September

Kick-Off: 7.45pm

Head north and through the Dartford Tunnel on the M25, but keep to the left upon your exit from the tunnel as you leave the M25 immediately after at the first junction, J31.

Take the third exit onto Ship Lane, and about one hundred yards up the road to your right will be the entrace to the ground - up a bit of a hill.

We reckon that may be one of the easier trips to navigate to this season!

Note: This game may be postponed depending on Thurrock’s FA Cup result next Saturday - so keep an eye out online and we’ll let you know what’s happening.

NEXTHEREThe Mead return to action here at the SCT in three days’ time as Ware visit us here on Tuesday night, 7.45pm kick-off.

Despite last week’s FA Cup exit away to South Park, Keith McMahon’s side remain unbeaten in the league campaign and head into this double-header of home games knowing four points or more will confirm a very solid start to the season.

And, on Tuesday night, the Mead face a Ware side who have been struggling to find all three points, whilst still remaining tough to beat. With just one win from their seven games so far, there remains plenty of work to be done for Kem Kemal’s outfit, but just two defeats shows there are positives to be had.

With twenty-three goals scored in their seven games, you can be sure of an entertaining game here in midweek. The Blues will be hoping to bounce back from their recent FA Cup disappointment though having fallen to a surprise 3-0 defeat at home to Felixstowe last week.

Kemal’s side travel to Barkingside this afternoon before their trip to the SCT, and having only narrowly avoided the drop last season with a twenty-first placed finish, the boss will be looking for his side to kickstart their campaign this weekend and start building some momentum early doors.
