WELCOME TO THE APRIL NEWSLETTER.At the time of writing, we have just held the Mayors Quiz which raised over £350 for my Charities, Hurstlea Amateur Boxing Club and St Elizabeth’s Hospice.

I would like to thank numerous people for the success of the Evening. Firstly the organisers, Cllr Jo Lea, Frank Lea and Leslie King - without their help the Quiz would not take place.

The sponsors of the Raffle Prizes were Elton House newsagents, Needham Market Post Office and Shop, Cllr Tony Ward, Cllr Jo Lea, Shear Bliss mobile hair, Nxtgen Driving academy, Sheila Norris and District Cllr Wendy Marchant.

It makes a nice change for

my wife Maggie and I to be able to relax at a Mayoral event when normally I would have donned a suit and tie, the Mayoral Robes, Chain of Office and hat. I would also be mingling with the great and good, extolling the virtues of Needham Market and, emphasising what a fantastic town it is to come and enjoy the beautiful countryside and visit our many and varied businesses.

Places I have been lucky enough to visit this year are as far apart as Lowestoft and Haverhill. Various dignitaries visited Needham Market in October when we had our Civic service and many of you will have seen the civic procession through the High Street.

I still have a number of functions to attend before my term of office comes to an end and look forward to seeing some of you at the forthcoming Art show in the community Centre over the Easter weekend. Let’s hope we have a very happy and sunny Easter!

Clubs:

Stowmarket and District Camera Club On 9 February Peter Norris DPAGB judged our 2nd Open competition. 34 prints and 24 PDIs were submitted. Peter gave constructive criticism and practical ideas on how images might be improved.

Roger Hance FRPS AFIAP BPE5* gave a talk on 23 February about close up and macro photography. This was a ‘how to’ lecture and he brought in some of the equipment he uses when going out on shoots, which he encouraged us to look at. He also gave us lots of hints and useful tips to help

us to produce photographs as amazing as his, which included wild flowers, birds and snakes.

On Thursday 26 February we went to the Imperial War Museum at Duxford for a photo shoot. The heavens opened as we arrived so we kept mainly to the hangars. We were lucky enough to see the American Air Museum just before it was closed for a year long redevelopment project.

Next meetings:

Monday 9 March: Club evening incorporating a look at the CD of the East Anglian Federation exhibition.

Tuesday 17 March: Photo shoot – location TBA

Monday 23 March: Open competition 3, to be judged by George Buxton

Monday 13 April: Jane Goodall ARPS will give her much acclaimed lecture

‘The Beautiful Light’. Non-members welcome for £3 entry fee

Monday 20 April: Evening photo shoot – location TBA

Monday 27 April: Open competition 4 to be judged by Alan Sarsby

Regular meetings are held at Stowmarket Community Centre, Hillside IP14 2BD, usually on the 2nd & 4th Monday of the month between September & June. We start arriving at around 7:00pm for a 7:30pm start.

We’d love to see you, so why not join us? All you need is a camera – any camera and a real interest in using it. Our members use DSLRs, compacts and bridge cameras.

Exciting New Fundraising Event: To help raise funds for the children’s visit this year we are holding a joint event with Needham Market Football Club on the evening of May 2nd. This will be a Pig Racing evening together with a Hog Roast and for those of you who have not been to a Pig Race before you can be assured of a great night out. Pig Racing and Tote provided by The Lions Club of Stowmarket. Come along and watch the pink fluffy pigs as they race up the track. Have a bet and cheer on your favourite as they reach the winning post. Enjoy a fabulous Hog Roast and dessert, all included in the ticket price. Anyone wishing to sponsor a Race can then name that race and anyone can become a “Pig owner” for the evening for only 2.50 per pig, per race. The Pig owner gets

to name the pig and if the pig wins a race the lucky owner will also receive a prize.

On April 10th we will be travelling to Belarus to meet with the families of the children who will come in this years group visit. We are happy to take letters for anyone who has been communicating with a child from this area, please let me have any correspondence by 8th April latest. Many o our supporters who sent individual shoe box Christmas presents to children this last Christmas have received thank you letters which show how very much the thought of someone thinking of them is appreciated.

We have been asked to take some clothing for the children of an extremely poor family living in the village looked after by our contact Father Dennis Snytko. There are two children in the family, a boy

aged 10 and a girl aged 12 so if anyone would like to donate an item of clothing for one of these children we (and they) would be very grateful.

As always all clothing donations are welcomed as if they are not suitable for the children coming in the group visit (aged 8 to 11) then we endeavour to send as much back for siblings and families as possible so please do keep supporting us.

Donations can be dropped at the Charity Shop in Needham Market High Street (please state they are for the children) or call me on 01449 760343 if you need to arrange a collection.

Thank you to all who support us, we could not do this without YOU!.Elizabeth Parker, Link Chairwww.ccllmidsuffolk.org.uk 01449 760343 07771 550868

Chernobyl Childrens Lifeline NEEDHAM IN BLOOM.

Needham in Bloom AGM was held on 14th February and a Committee was elected to serve for another year. The spring flowers should now be blooming in the High Street containers, and it’s now time to start thinking about the summer planting. With warmer days and lighter evenings it is time to get out into the garden and do the spring cleaning, which leads to a reminder of the Spring Front Garden event, during the week 13th to 19th April. There will be no Open Gardens this year, but it is hoped that we will organize a hanging basket and container competition for the summer, and have a plant stall at some point. Our next meeting will be on 28th March at 10.00 in the Community Centre, and new hands will be welcomed to join our little band. Come to the meeting or contact Vera on 01449 723424 if you would like to make a difference.P.R.

The opportunist thief will also be out and about looking for the garage door left open with all types of goodies on display; side gates are also left unlocked and often as not car windows are also left down with jackets and handbags on display. It may be a pain to continually lock doors behind you especially if you are only nipping indoors for a few moments but it will be more of a pain to discover your favourite electric drill or power washer has suddenly disappeared. It is also wise to train your children in the art of being security conscious. Time after time as you walk around town you see expensive cycles left lying on the front lawn. These items are easy pickings for the would-be thief and are

so easy to dispose of at car boot sales and on eBay.Domestic burglary thankfully is very rare especially in Needham Market. This type of thief is far more organised than the opportunist thief. He could well be sizing up his victim over a couple of days. Door knockers that call at your property with the excuse they are looking for a particular street or person in the area could well be checking you out. Apart from doing a quick visual search they will be trying to ascertain whether you live alone or are security conscious. A quick no thank you and shutting of the door is all that is required, do not engage in a long discussion with a stranger. If you or your neighbours are continually harassed by these people please report it. If three or more residents of a street complain to Trading Standards or the Town Council your street could be made an official No Cold Calling Area.If that happens you will find that

with the No Cold Calling signs erected this will deter unwanted callers to knock at your door as they could and would be prosecuted. We do have two streets in Needham Market that have been designated No Cold Calling Areas. Finally with so much personal information displayed on social media nowadays please refrain from advertising the fact that you will be away on

holiday. The sophisticated thief continually monitors sites such as Facebook looking for just that information. It is also unwise to leave a similar message on the answer phone. By all means let your neighbours know you will be away and ask them to keep an eye on your property for you. A friendly neighbour watching your property is one of the best forms of security.TDG

At our group meeting on Tuesday 10 March we had a Tai Chi session, with instruction by teacher Richard Napper. Tai Chi is an excellent method of relaxing the mind and body and is sometimes described as ‘moving yoga’. The therapy sessions we hold occasionally are of enormous benefit to the carers and we hope to provide more in the future. If you are a carer and would

like more information about our group please telephone Amanda King on 07402 756670 or Kay Oakes on 07702 339971.

Care and Support Groups

Right support key to Universal Credit rollout successMid Suffolk Citizens Advice says it is concerned about levels of support available to people being moved onto Universal Credit.

The Department for Work and Pensions has announced the national rollout of the new benefit, which rolls six benefits, including Jobseekers Allowance and Housing Benefit, into one. In the first instance the rollout only applies to single people under 25 applying for Universal Credit. Mid Suffolk Citizens Advice Bureau Manager, Carol Eagles, said:

‘Universal credit isn’t going to go away – we are expecting it to come into force in Mid Suffolk from September. We want to make sure residents are ready for it well in advance. We firmly believe that support for claimants is key to the success of Universal Credit. Research by Citizens Advice shows that nine in ten of our clients need assistance to deal with things like monthly

payments and budgeting. Claimants need to know: - Payments of Universal

Credit will be made once a month direct to a chosen bank account.

- There will be a singlepayment per household.

- Universal Credit includesrent which will need to be paid directly to the landlord.

- Claims should be madeonline.

Research by Citizens Advice with people seeking help from CABx in Universal Credit pilot areas found that nine in ten of our clients are not ready for UC: - One in five did not have

access to basic banking. - More than half said

they’ll struggle with online applications.

- In the first roll-out area, 78per cent of all clients needed help with any online form.

Contact Mid Suffolk Citizens Advice for help understanding the changes and how to respond to them. Drop into the office at 5 Milton Road, Stowmarket, Suffolk. IP14 1EZ, call us on 01449 676060 or email us [email protected]

How about entering Needham Market Raft Race this year? We’re looking for new teams to come along and have fun at the friendliest, family event this June. It’s a great achievement to build a raft with friends and get it on the water, and so much fun that teams come back year after year. Why not use the Raft Race as a way of raising money for your favourite charity? The Tracey Cadman Challenge will be won by the fastest raft in the Time Trials and as ever the Final promises to be fast and exciting. The Fancy Dress Competition is always great fun. Entry forms are available from Julie Kett on 721430 or on our website www.needhamraftrace.wordpress.comFind us on FacebookThe whole family will have great fun watching the races. There

Needham Market Town Council NewsElections 2015

There will be town and parish council elections on Thursday 7th May 2015. If there is a contested position in relation to Needham Market Town Council (i.e. there are more valid nominations than the 15 seats on the Town Council), the poll will be combined with the UK Parliamentary and District Council elections.

The Town Council has received nomination papers (nomination form and guidance notes). If you are interested in standing for election as a Needham Market Town Councillor, you may collect nomination papers from the Town Council Office (details on page 2 of this Newsletter – although official opening hours are as shown, there is usually someone in the office Mon to Thurs).

The deadline for receipt of completed nomination forms by Mid Suffolk District Council is strictly 4pm on Thursday 9th April. Any nominations received after that time will not be valid. Completed nomination forms can also be dropped into the Town Council Office so long as that takes place on, or before, Monday 6th April. The District Council has asked Town/Parish Councils to help with the nominations process and I will check any forms received in the Town Council Office and be passing them over to the District Council on Tuesday 7th April.

Advice from the Police

Being aware of a burglary which took place at a property on Stowmarket Road, the Town Council is keen to support our Mid Suffolk South Safer Neighbourhood Team in encouraging residents to keep their property as secure as possible. On the pretext of

offering gardening services two males gained entry to the Stowmarket Road property by a back door and stole items from within the house. The occupant, who disturbed the intruders, was left very shaken by the incident.

The Police advise:

Lock – Is your back door locked? Always check it is as soon as someone knocks at your door or rings your bell. Bogus callers often have an accomplice who may try to enter your home by the back door while you are distracted.

Stop – Do not open the door until you have looked through a window or used a door viewer to see who is on your doorstep.

Remember, you do not have to open your door to anyone, especially someone you are not expecting or do not know. If in doubt, keep them out by keeping your door shut. Consider calling a friend or relative, if you have a warden call or community alarm, press your button and call them. If the caller looks suspicious or you are frightened, do not open the door call 999.

Chain – If you feel that you need to speak to the caller, use a door-chain. Do not open the door unless you put the chain on first so that you can see the person on your doorstep.

Find out who they are and what they want. Close the door again while you do the following:

Check – Check their identity. If they say they are from a water, gas or electricity company they will have photo identification. If

they cannot produce a bone fide identification card, send them away and close the door.

Beware of phone calls – If you do speak with theperson at your front door and your telephone rings, do not leave the person alone on your doorstep and disappear out of sight. They may take the opportunity to enter your house! With the use of mobile phones, the distraction burglars could easily find your telephone number and call your home phone.

Overgrowth of Vegetation

With the welcome onset of spring, can I please remind

residents whose property is adjacent to a public pathway and, where there is vegetation on the boundary, to keep vegetation from overgrowing onto the pathway. This applies particularly to hedges and trees which, if left to overgrow, cause inconvenience and in some cases, injury to people using the pathway. It is appreciated that a majority of residents do keep the pathways clear of vegetation, but there are some areas that would benefit from regular attention.

This month we are looking for a home for Willow and Shadow a very sweet and affectionate brother & sister who are a little shy to start with but once they get to know you love to have cuddles and fuss. They enjoy playing with their toys and spend a lot of time chasing around with each other. They are 2.5 years old and need to be homed together. Willow & Shadow would suit a family home and can be homed with children over 6 years but unfortunately they

Congratulations to those Year 8 pupils who have been selected as Sports Leaders and will now be helping out in the P.E. Department at school with inter- form competitions and with P.E. in local Primary Schools. They will all be issued with a shirt, whistle and stop watch. In February, Year 7 played against Combs Middle School at football and netball. The girls won convincingly and the boys had an exciting draw at 12 - 12. At the end of the month, Year 6 travelled to Stowmarket Middle School to play in a mixed basketball match. Although they didn’t win, they gained valuable experience for another time.

Just before half-term, we again welcomed Quantum Theatre to school. Actors performed ‘The Writing on the Wall’ to Year 6 pupils. This provided reinforcement of our

work in spelling, punctuation and grammar in a fun and creative way.

As part of our Enrichment Programme for higher ability pupils, 4 Year 8’s recently took part in the ‘U.K. Maths Team Challenge.’ Zoe Balaam, Sophie Butel, Robert Billingham and Ryan Swinton travelled to Framlingham College with Mrs Billingham. The ‘Challenge’ was open to Year 8 and 9 students and 16 schools were represented. Our pupils, not only gained valuable experience and enjoyed the activities, but finished in 4th place overall which is fantastic!

Finally, many thanks to everyone for supporting our non-uniform day at the end of February. A total of £144.08 was raised and has been given to the Cancer Ward at Ipswich Hospital.

BEATING THE BOUNDS SUNDAY 24th MAY 2015

MEET IN THE STATION YARD AT 2.30 p.m.

WEAR STOUT SHOES AND BRING RAINWEAR

Discover the Needham Market Parish Boundaries and enjoy the walk in congenial company.

Beating the Bounds or Perambulation replaced the old Rogation Ceremonies, (Gospel Oak) which were of 8th century origin, but contained elements of paganism and were banned following the Reformation. Beating the Bounds is still practiced in some places, although as a custom rather than a necessity.

Beating the Bounds takes place on the fifth Sunday after Easter, Rogation Sunday. Until the second half of the 19th century the Vestry Committee were charged with the responsibility for investigating the boundaries of their Parish to ensure no new, (un-rated ) buildings had been erected without their knowledge. The “Perambulation” included Officers of the Vestry with village Notables and children armed with “wands of office” which were usually willow rods and used to “Beat the Bound” On occasions, boys were also beaten or bumped on the ground so that they would “ well remember the bounds of the Parish in which they do dwell. “ In the old Rogation Ceremonies it was thought that their cries of protestations would drive evil spirits into the neighbouring Parish. At traditional stopping places the priest would read from the Scriptures, the stops being marked by an oak tree or other familiar feature. Place names such as “Gospel Oak” “Gospel Thorn” and “Amen Corner” are relics of this ancient festival.

Perambulators were offered Ganging Beer and Ramification Biscuits by way of refreshments, but the recipes for these have disappeared just as the tradition of mistreating the children. We can however, offer teas or soft drinks and a biscuit at the Football Club on the way round.

So come along and enjoy a healthy walk in good company and we promise not to duck anyone in the Gipping, and the beating or bumping of children is strictly forbidden. The walk takes about 2 hours, and there is a refreshment stop after about an hour.

Church NewsPARISH CHURCH OF ST JOHN THE BAPTISTTHE RED POPPY The famous poem written by Major John McCrae begins;

“In Flanders fields, the poppies blowBetween the crosses, row on rowThat mark our place, and in the skyThe larks, still bravely singing, flyScarce heard amid the guns below.”

Poppies can be pretty, painful or poignant; a symbol of remembrance, but what memories do they evoke? What reminds you most. Some people are moved as they see the petals float down from the ceiling at the Royal Albert Hall, during the annual Remembrance Service there; the poppy sellers out on the streets every year are a reminder too; beyond poppies but linked to them by memories there are the faded photographs, the crumpled love letters with promises of undying love and those sent, usually, between a mother and her son or a husband and wife. The list is endless.

Memories – painful and precious. What are your memories linked to the poppy? Come and share them with us at St.John’s Church in Needham Market.

We are creating a display of knitted and crocheted poppies for Remembrance Day this

year as a community project and we hope they will be able to be used in displays for the Remembrance Day Service on November 8th. Everyone is invited to take part. That means you gentlemen as well. (My husband can knit, his Mum taught him as a small boy!)

The patterns for knitted and crocheted poppies are available from the church. Just ask Diane, the Vicar, or other church members for one. If you cannot knit or crochet but you would like to make a contribution you could do so by bringing some red wool or knitting needles/ crochet hooks, and leaving them in the container in the church marked Poppy Appeal and others will be able to use them.

My Father was in the R.A.F, out in the Middle East (I still have his uniform jacket). My Uncle was in the Canadian Air Force ( he flew Lancaster’s as a rear gunner) and he was missing in action, presumed killed, until it was discovered that he had been shot down over Germany and spent two years as a P.O.W. May they Rest in Peace. and rise in glory.

I certainly will be making poppies and proudly display them for my family; come and do the same for yours.

Church News

HOME WORSHIPOn 2nd March, Home Worship was led by retired school teacher Kate Dines, Choir Mistress of Skylarks children’s choir, Secretary of the PCC, and an accomplished musician who sometimes performs at the ‘Music at Noon’ events. She told us of her life and faith through the medium of her love of music and singing from when she was a child. Her parents (who weren’t church goers) sent her to the local Methodist

Sunday School, where she loved the choruses they used to sing and, when they heard she could play the piano as she got older, they encouraged her to use her musical talent. The next Home Worship on Monday, 6th April, will be lead by Jan Bailey who asks us to bring our favourite parable. This will be held at 10 o’clock, 137 High Street, Needham Market. After the Worship we have tea/coffee and a friendly chat. This is an outreach group, all welcome.

Church NewsCHRISTCHURCH

By the time you read this, the front of Christchurch Needham Market is likely to be in a less than pristine condition. The building work is due to start on 2nd March and is scheduled to continue until the end of May. We hope that the work is not causing too many problems as you pass up and down the High Street, and ask that you accept our apologies if you have been inconvenienced.

During the weeks that the builders are on site we will be holding Sunday morning worship at 10.30 in the Halls, and as always everyone will be most welcome. Most other activities will continue as normal – including the Coffee Mornings - although you may have to seek the cake stall inside the Hall rather than on the forecourt. I don’t know about you but I’m looking forward to the project being completed and for the church to have a more accessible entrance for those who cross the threshold.

As I write this we are in the

church season of Lent – a time for reflection and preparation for Easter. And in many ways I think the building project reflects the message of Easter – that message of new life and new beginnings through the Resurrection of Jesus following the despair and destruction of Good Friday when he died on the Cross.

For the new frontage and welcome area can only be brought to fruition by taking down the old stone barriers – by removing the old opaque stained glass windows, by repositioning the entrance and creating a new way to enter the building. This project marks a new beginning for Christchurch – a new way to interact with the people that pass up and down the High Street and we hope that when it is complete you will like what you see, and will come inside to see what has been done.

But until then, thank you to all those people who have contributed in any way to the fundraising, and a very Happy Easter to you all.

With half a dozen matches to go in the Season every game is a Cup Final and we are looking for the maximum amount of support especially for our remaining 2 Home Fixtures. On Easter Monday we entertain Dereham Town and our penultimate game of the season, which is also our last home match, is against Harlow Town, which could well determine the League Championship as we have been neck and neck with them all season. Our Academy has had an amazing time of late as firstly five lads were called up to play for Suffolk FA Under 18s against Hertfordshire and then four of them were invited to join the Ipswich Town Under 18s side for their game against Crystal Palace Under 18s.Graduates from the NMFC Academy have been offered and accepted two year contracts with the Club’s first team demonstrating the club’s long term commitment to giving local lads an environment in which to progress in the game.Current first team squad members Keiran Morphew, Brendon Heath and Adam Mills are products of the Academy and are being supported by the club to ensure that they fulfil their ambitions. With our planned expansion this summer of the Academy to

include a facility at Brantham Athletic we hope that the pool of available resources will help us to demonstrate the club’s key principle when setting up the Academy, to encourage and support the development of local lads both from a football and a working career perspective.Forthcoming Events arranged: • Good Friday 3rd April -
