Premier’s Reading Challenge Launching Place Primary School is again encouraging students to enrol in the Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge for 2015. Last year the response from our students was exceptional. The Challenge encourages students to develop a lifelong love of reading as well as developing important literacy skills. Students in Prep to Year 2 are challenged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books and students in Years 3 to 6 are challenged to read 15 books. If children are just learning to read, you can help them to ‘experience’ books by reading to, or with, them and talking about the story, text and pictures. Next week permission forms will be sent home. Please ensure that the forms are signed and returned to school. • Around Australia, schools and community groups are celebrating World Harmony Day in all different sorts of ways. Here in Australia, many of us have come from different nations to make a life in this beautiful land. Harmony Day is held on 21 March in Australia. Harmony Day is intended to show cohesion and inclusion in Australia and promote a tolerant and culturally diverse society.

Harmony Day began in 1999: it is marked by people coming together and participating in local activities. The continuing message of Harmony Day is 'Everyone Belongs'. It is about community participation, inclusiveness, celebrating diversity, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. www.harmony.gov.au

    Science Night

We had an excellent turnout of enthusiastic students and parents who participated in a variety of science experiments. There were

definitely some favourite activities/ experiments such as sherbet making. It was wonderful to see the level of effort that had

obviously gone into dressing up in a science theme. Winners were presented with a prize at this weeks assembly. Photos taken by

our media team are included in this weeks newsletter.

  • Sometimes when you have a go at new things, you also make mistakes. Everybody makes mistakes, no matter how smart you are. Every person learns in a different way and at different speeds, so if other people in your class learn things faster or slower than you, do not get upset. Remember that DOING YOUR BEST is the most important thing.

When we try our hardest we learn and every day we learn something new. It may be as simple as making your own lunch or bed, tying a shoe lace, writing your name, spelling a word, reading a sentence or counting. As we progress we become more skilful and braver to have a go at new challenges. So here are some examples of Launch students Doing Their Best and sharing with us what they have learnt in term 1.

Liam S Foundation - I have learnt to do lots of letters. Angus A Foundation - I am good at numbers and I try really hard. Maddison D Foundation - I know how to be a good friend and help people if they need it. Hayley S Foundation - I can count to 20 . I can also count to 30 and Im getting quick. Anita Q Grade 3 - We have learnt how to do a food web. It is interesting to learn about something new. Chloe C Grade 4 - Persuasive writing can be hard but we have learnt the right way to do it. Kate P Grade 4 - I have learnt how to be better at CAF reading by learning about new strategies. Lachlan T Grade 4 - I write a lot more in my Writers Notebook. Angus L Grade 3 - Im getting better at Blitzmaster as Im getting quicker with working out numbers.

So what does Doing Your Best look like?

There are many different ways that you can do your best at school. Some important ways to do your best include listening, trying and having a go.

    LISTEN CAREFULLY

To help you to listen more carefully try these things: Look at the person when they speak and make eye contact. Wait until the person has finished before you start speaking. If you are not sure what someone has said, ask them politely to say it again.

TRY HARD When you try hard, you will know that you have done your best. Even if some work is hard, the more you try, the more you will learn. To help you try hard, sometimes it is better to sit close to the front, so you can listen better.

Sometimes it is important not to sit next to your friends or people who distract you or people that you will always talk to.

    HAVE A GO

When you go to school, there are many new challenges, such as excursions, camps, new books, talking to new students or adults, playing new games or playing new sports. When you try different things, it can be hard, but it can also help you to feel good and to learn more. When you have done something more than once it usually gets easier and easier.
