Acongressman for nearly three decadesbeginning in the mid-1970s, RichardGephardt served in the House DemocraticLeadership for twenty years, both as
Majority and Minority Leader, prior to his retirementat the end of 2004. Born in the same South St. Louisneighborhood he represented in Congress, Gephardtholds degrees from Northwestern University and theUniversity of Michigan Law School. Described byone scholar as “a politician with strong views on pol-icy, tailored to fit the new world of globalization andtechnology but clearly sized to accommodate hisstrong identification with working-class families,”Gephardt is the author of An Even Better Place:America in the 21st Century, a treatise on the mostpressing concerns affecting the American people inthe new millennium.
Azar Nafisi is a Visiting Fellow and professo-rial lecturer at the Foreign Policy Instituteof the Johns Hopkins University’s NitzeSchool of Advanced International Studies
(SAIS) in Washington, DC. A professor of aesthetics,culture and literature, Dr. Nafisi is the author of the crit-ically-acclaimed best-seller, Reading Lolita in Te h e r a n :A Memoir in Books, which is based upon her experi-ence in Iran leading a discussion group of youngwomen on forbidden works of Western literature priorto fleeing that country for the U.S. 1997. As a teacherat the Free Islamic University, Allameh Tabatabaii, andthe University of Tehran—where she was eventuallyexpelled for refusing to wear the mandatory Islamicveil--she earned national respect and internationalrecognition for advocating on behalf of Iran’s intellec-tuals, youth, and especially young women.
Francis Fukuyama is Bernard L. SchwartzProfessor of International Political Economyat the Johns Hopkins University’s NitzeSchool of Advanced International Studies
(SAIS). One of the leading public intellectuals in theU.S., Dr. Fukuyama has written widely on issues relat-ing to democratization, international political economy,the role of culture and social capital in modern econom-ic life, and the social consequences of the transition intoan information economy. Dr. Fukuyama’s book, T h eEnd of History and the Last Man (Free Press, 1992),has appeared in over twenty foreign editions. His mostrecent book is State-Building: Governance and Wo r l dOrder in the 21st Century (2004). Previous aff i l i a t i o n sinclude the RAND Corporation and the PolicyPlanning Staff of the U.S. Department of State.
