AccompanistsThree accompanists are permitted with each fiddler at Weiser. Since no sheet music is used, an accompanist must have a huge knowledge of the fiddle tunes that might be played during the contest. Most of the accompanists at Weiser play guitar or bass.

*When the Fiddle Contest first started in Weiser 1953, it was common to see an accordion player, a banjo player, or a piano player providing the backup for the fiddler. Shown here are Charlie and Fannie backing up an unknown fiddler from the late 1950s.

Weiser and the NOTF, Inc. wishes to extend a huge thank you to the musicians, parents of musicians, and families of musicians for coming to Weiser year after year. We “gush” over hot young fiddlers with trophies and prize money, but nary a word of acknowledgment is given to the folks behind the scenes who are truly responsible for keeping the flame alive.

THANK YOU!

Our top accompanists for 2016 from L to R: were 5th place Matt Hartz, 57 times, 3rd place Anthony Mature, 70 times, 1st place 17 year old Drew Miller, 94 times, 2nd place Rod Anderson, 86 times, and 4th place Darin Meeks, 62 times.

PHILOSOPHY: I like to hear a fiddler who gets a good tone and plays with good intonation. I also like tons of drive on the breakdowns and lots of feeling in the waltz. Well played improvisation never hurts.a musician whose personality shines through their interpretation of a tune.

PHILOSOPHY: I like good music. I listen for groove, clarity, joy, maturity, intonation, and originality. At a high level, I listen for controlled improvisation, which is the foundation of TX Style and old time fiddle music. I love to hear

PHILOSOPHY: “I listen for playing that references the old masters such as Major Franklin and Benny Thomasson but with a sense of individuality. Playing should be a blend of great style (groove, excitement, tasteful licks) and technique (intonation, rhythm, good sound). As a fiddle player, it’s always important to challenge yourself, but play something that can be executed comfortably. Choose tunes that showcase your abilities but still allow you to have a great time on stage.”

to become a better musician. When I am judging, I love to hear the contestant play a tune they love, or have added a little of their own flavor to. I do not like to hear a canned version. Just like many judges have said in the past, I also like to hear the student play a tune that they are comfortable with. It’s better to play something easier perfectly, than to struggle through a tune that is too difficult. The judges want the best for each contestant. We want to be able to sit back and tap our toes! We don’t want to be on the edge of our seat worried that you are going to mess up at any moment because it is going too fast. I love a driving hoedown, a beautiful yet mysterious waltz, and a fun tune of choice.

PHILOSOPHY: When I teach my students how to compete at fiddling contests, I tell them to play their best, and if they do that, no matter how the contest turns out, they can be proud in the fact that they did their very best. Fiddle contests are about meeting up with friends, sharing music with each other, passing along a tradition, and working

Daniel Touchstone San Diego, CAfDan Touchstone, a native of San Diego, is a second generation fiddle player. His father, Leon, was a popular western swing fiddler player, having played at many of the dance halls in the San Diego area in the forties, fifties and sixties. Dan was given his first fiddle when he was only four years old, and has been playing for over sixty years.

our albums, and has twice been featured on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion.

Matt is an accomplished fiddler in multiple styles, including Texas, Appalachian old-time, and bluegrass. He has three times placed in the top ten at the National Oldtime Fiddlers’ Contest as well as placing at contests across the country, including the Arizona State Fiddle Championship, Four Corners Fiddle Contest, Walnut Valley Open, and Fiddler’s Grove Festival in North Carolina. Growing up in a family of fiddlers, his dad, Peter “Doc” Rolland, a well-known cowboy fiddler and past Weiser judge, first brought him and his brother to compete at Weiser in 2000 and he’s loved the contest ever since.

Matt is a graduate of the University of Arizona and was a 2010 Fulbright Scholar to Mexico. When not touring, he is active in the Arizona music and arts community, and teaches fiddle privately and at the annual Rolland Fiddle Camp in southern Colorado.

fHe has competed in many contests, having won a number of them, and has finished in the top five four times in Weiser, at the National Old Time Fiddle Contest. He has judged many contests over the years, including here at Weiser. Recently, Dan has served as director of the Julian Fiddle & Pickin’ Contest held near San Diego each Spring. He has also participated in a program to introduce fiddle playing to students of the San Diego Unified School District. He is a former president of the Southern California Violin Makers Association, having won the California State Old Time Fiddlers Association championship on a fiddle he made. Dan and his wife Vicki, have three children and four grand kids. His hobbies include surfing and golf.

PHILOSOPHY: I’m most interested in a fiddle player’s musicality. Don’t play beyond your ability. It can make the listeners uncomfortable. No one wants to worry about whether or not you are going to crash. Your mastery of the fiddle can be evident in simple passages. As a judge, if I am entertained by your playing and tapping my foot, you are more likely to garner a better score.

PHILOSOPHY: When it comes to judging, Matt emphasizes groove and feel. Whether it’s a waltz, a breakdown, or a tune of choice, the tune should be danceable and make the listener want to move. After timing, expressiveness and command of the style is important to him. The fiddler should play in a controlled manner, but should strive to tackle difficult tunes and arrangements while keeping good fundamentals (tone, intonation, and accuracy). Don’t forget to have fun and thank your guitar players!

Five judges will work as a panel. A sixth judge rotates through the panel to provide the other five with needed breaks. Judges do not change once a round has started.

Contest JudgingSix judges are obtained from across the country. Each judge is an outstanding oldtime fiddler whose ability has been demonstrated through competition here at Weiser or reputation at other contests throughout the country.

Five judges work as a panel. A sixth judge rotates through the panel to provide the other five with needed breaks. Judging is done remotely. The judges do not see or hear the names of the contestants. Only the contesting tunes are broadcasted to the Judges’ Room.

Judging criteria on individual tunes will include but is not limited to Danceability, Oldtime Style, Rhythm, and Tone. Each fiddler’s score is determined by adding the scores of the three tunes together. The

The score sheets are ranked together with the high scoresheet and the low score sheet thrown out and the three middle scores are added together. This score is carried over from one round to the next, and the total scores will determine the winner. Ties in the final rounds will be played off by playing another in the final rounds will be played off by playing another complete round.

The contestants in the Grand Champion Division have a 5 minute time limit in each of their 5 rounds. All other contestants have 4 minutes to complete their round. When they start the stopwatch starts. When they stop the stopwatch stops and the time is recorded. If they go over the 4 minutes a penalty is subtracted from the total score. All 4th rounds have a 5 minute time limit.

Please see our website for a listing of these contests.

Three judges are selected prior to the evening’s Certified Showcase and will be seated in the audience. The judges will be looking at the following areas within a 4 minute time limit:
