Letter From the Club PresidentDear Fellow Rotarians,

Thursday, 27th August our speaker was Susan Marie, cousin of our member Peter Symons. Susan is the Director of UWA Extension and she informed us of the community courses and events organised by UWA Extension four times a year – Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring.

In Susan’s words “UWA E x t e n s i o n p r o v i d e s continuing education and experiences across a range of

recreational and professional courses. As the community arm of UWA, we provide intellectual and creative opportunities for everyone, regardless of age or qualifications”.

I certainly had no idea of the depth and breadth of UWA Extension and appreciated learning more about it.Once again, attendance at Thursday’s meeting was disappointingly low. It is appreciated that members are busy, some were still unwell from the winter bugs around, however, can I encourage all possible to make every attempt to make our Thursday meetings. Missing members are not able to hear first hand what is happing in

the club and are unable to contribute to decisions and become involved with projects. Being a new club it’s important for all members to make a special effort to attend and participate to help set the direction and be a part of the future success of the RC of Freshwater Bay.

The majority of our members receive the Rotary Down Under Magazine, however, where there are couples in the club, one family member receives the Rotarian Magazine. For those with the Rotarian magazine, I draw your attention to the following articles. The August issue has an excellent article on the story behind the Four Way Test. The July

issue points out in its article ‘The Science of Giving’ Medical research supports Service Above Self – more on this in the Bulletin. While in the June issue the article by Kilong Ung, a Rotarian in Portland, Oregon, who tells the story of his life in Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge, his escape to Thailand and finally to the USA. is very moving. I’d like to quote Kilong Ung’s closing paragraph as for me it sums up why many of us are Rotarians.

“I cannot change the past. But what I do today and tomorrow matters. I believe that Rotary represents humanity at its best. My faith in humanity was nearly

destroyed by the Khmer Rouge. Whenever I meet a kind, considerate and compassionate person, I regain a little of that faith. I remain a genocide survivor. But the atmosphere of Rotary energises me and gives me courage, strength and hope.’

I hope all Rotarians have the District Governor’s visit Thursday, 1st October and the Dr. Ken Collins Address, which is an address on the Rotary Foundation, by the world President, John Kenny, on Monday, 16th November, 2009 marked in your diaries. Both are dinners, which also include spouses, so please put these dates aside and help to make both functions a resounding success as ‘The Future of Rotary is in your Hands’.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Di CollinsCharter President

InteractKen is looking for members with an interest in assisting to form a community based Interact Club to contact him.  Christ Church Grammar School have offered a venue to hold meetings and it is thought that a Saturday, perhaps afternoon would be the best time to consider.  Rotary has a number of excellent projects and programs for our youth to keep them occupied and out of trouble and Interact is one such program.

Quiz NightLooking for feedback from members as to a recommendation for a Quiz Master so that a date can be arranged to organise a Quiz Night for much needed funds for projects.   Would members start thinking about rounding up prizes that can be used on the night as auction items, raffles and table prizes.  Please contact Simone.

Climb for a SmileDirector Rob Rohrlach has this in hand and is looking for volunteers for the exit, people to do the climb and sponsors.

Knitted Beanies, Scarves and Lap Rugs for WilunaEnid has had an article written up in the St. Louis Estate Newsletter for knitters for beanies and scarves in footy colours for the aboriginals in Wiluna.   She now has patterns and will keep us informed as to progress.  Many thanks Enid.

The Rotary Foundation Dr Ken Collins AddressThe annual Address on the Rotary Foundation will be presented this year on Monday, 16th November, 7.00pm for 7.30pm at the Golden Nugget Room, Gloucester Park.   Cost is $45.00 per person for a two course meal.   Bar service is available.   The Address this

year will be presented by the world President of Rotary International himself, John Kenny from Scotland.   The Rotary Foundation Alumni speaker will be retired Federal Court Judge Bob Nicholson.

The Board discussed that if the club members were in agreement, our regular Thursday meeting would be transferred to Monday, 16th November for that week to maximise attendance.   All present at this week’s meeting agreed to the change.

Rotary Down Under MagazineThe July issue has two excellent articles on Funds for the Rotary Foundation.  The first is on Page 31 ‘Funds for the Foundation’, and the second is over the page on Page 32/33 ‘Paul Harris Society.   Investment in Goodwill’.   Your attention is drawn to these two articles and if you’ve not already read them, can I ask that you do so as a big push is being made this year for both Major Donors and Paul Harris Society Members, due to the lack of funding available in the Rotary F o u n d a t i o n f o r H u m a n i t a r i a n a n d Educational Programs.

At the Rotary Foundation Dr. Ken Collins Address on 16th November, all Major Donors and Paul Harris Society Members will be recognised by the RI President, John Kenny so please give consideration to supporting these areas, if at all possible.

Please see PRID Ken who is the District Rotary Foundation Chairman, if you would like to contribute through either or both these areas.  For those able to give something, but not as a Major Donor or Paul Harris Society Member, there is the Centurion program which is $100 per year to the Rotary Foundation, for as long as one is able.

The Science of Giving – Medical Research Supports Service Above SelfIn the July issue of the Rotarian Magazine is an interesting article written by Sandra Swanson.       For members who do not receive this magazine, following are a couple of exerts from the article.

‘For Rotarians, Service Above Self is a succinct guide to life.  Now scientists are finding that Rotary’s motto may represent even more: a prescription for good health.  Service to others is “as important as exercise and quitting smoking”, says Stephen Post, co-author of Why good Things Happen to Good People and director of Sony Brook University’s Center for Medical Humanities, Compassionate Care and Bioethics in New York.

Doug Oman, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health, found that volunteering for at least two organisations was as beneficial as exercising four times a week in reducing mortality rate.’

Reclaiming schools in Sri Lankaby Nicole Charky The Rotarian -- September 2009  Photography by Alyce Henson

When the tsunami hit Sri Lanka in 2004, more than 187 coastal schools were damaged or destroyed. In the January 2006 issue, The Rotarian covered the Schools Reawaken project, for which District 3220 raised more than US$12 million to build 25 schools. The district received help from The Rotary Foundation, Rotary clubs around the world, and other organizations.

As the project nears its end, 22 schools are back in service, providing for about 12,000 children affected by the tsunami. Staff photographer Alyce Henson, who covered our first story, went back this year to see the extraordinary results at five of those schools. Henson met up with Imesha Udari de Zoyza again, four years after her school was destroyed. Now a graduate of Randombe Kanishta Vidyalaya, she said, “My school is a beautiful palace.”

Membership increases during 2008-09 Rotary yearBy Jennifer Lee Atkin  Rotary International News -- 20 August 2009

In a year of economic havoc that rocked global markets and shook consumer confidence, Rotary International’s most important asset – its members – steadily grew.As of 30 June, the end of the 2008-09 RI year, there were 1,234,527 members in 33,790 Rotary clubs. That’s an increase of 3,044 members and 520 clubs from the previous year.

“Businesses in tough economies plan how to grow, and most businesses then do grow. Rotary clubs also have to plan for their futures and take action on those plans,” said Mike McGovern, chair of RI’s Membership Development and Retention Committee.

“New clubs are forming in communities with existing clubs by offering alternative times and the opportunity to bring fresh perspectives to Rotary,” McGovern added.

More than 5,700 clubs in the 534 RI districts achieved a membership growth rate of 10 percent or better during the 2008-09 year. The 10 percent goal was set by 2008-09 RI

President Dong Kurn Lee, who presided over 12 presidential membership conferences held on six continents during the year. Each conference was attended by between 300 and 1,500 Rotarians. Lee also made personal calls to each of Rotary’s district governors.

“We must reach out to people who are different from us and from the members in our club, because this is the way to a stronger club with more connections and better potential,” Lee said at the 2009 International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA.

Rotary clubs must continue to build membership during the 2009-10 year, said RI President John Kenny.

“I will simply rely on you, as responsible people, to see to it that we have more qualified members, true Rotarians, at the end of the year than we had at the beginning. And I will rely on you to do your best to see to the mentoring of our newest members, for retention is no less important than recruitment,” Kenny told Rotarians at the RI Convention in Birmingham, England.

“Rotary grows when members are motivated to invite Rotarians into their clubs and when Rotarians believe they are contributing to a greater good,” McGovern said.

The Rotary FoundationWeek 9: This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about how effectively our Foundation matches people with money for positive results.

In the words of Arch Klumph: “Money alone does

little good. Individual service is helpless without money. The two together can be a godsend to civilization.” Your financial resources combined with your time, energy and talent is critical to Rotary’s mission.

It is worth noting that one hundred percent of our Annual Programs Fund (APF) contributions are spent on Foundation programs.

These contributions are invested for a period of three years, with a portion of the investment earnings paying for the Foundation’s administrative and fund development expenses.

This unique funding cycle keeps the engine of The Rotary Foundation running throughout the world.
