Waist Disposal ChallengeThis week Simone gave us an overview of the Waist Disposal Challenge.

In the pilot study conducted in District 9460 is was determined that 88% of Rotarians in the District were overweight or obese, as determined by the use of the Body Mass Index (BMI).

The programs is aimed at giving Rotarians the tools to

understand the importance of nutrition and exercise in gaining and maintaining a healthy weight.

To make the program a bit more interesting the education components are being conducted in

association with a ‘challenge‘ component, that will pit our club against all other participating clubs in WA, with the best performing club winning the ‘Waist Disposal Challenge Award’

Simone hopes to make Thursdays presentation available from http://www.slideshare.net/rcfwb, for those members that could not make it to the meeting.

Please direct any queries regarding this program to Simone or Daniel.

Potential MemberWe very much enjoyed having Wilma McBain at our meeting this week.  Wilma is involved with the Cleft Lip

Unit at PMH.   In this capacity she has been involved with Rotary’s Interplast, ROMAC projects ad Operation Rainbow.   We hope that Wilma will come back and visit us again in 4-5 weeks after she has completed the commitment she has during that period.

German RF Ambassadorial Scholar rides for PolioPlusOur member and Hon. German Consul Bill and PRID and Gates Challenge Zone Co-ordinator Ken met German RF Scholar Guido Kunze who has ridden his bicycle across Australia in the astonishing time of 7 days plus a few hours and minutes to raise funds for Rotary’s PolioPlus program.  Bill was contacted by a German media to advise him of this which resulted in a media opportunity at the floral clock in Kings Park on Friday morning 23rd October.

Congratulations FellowsProf Bryant Stokes and Ken Collins will be celebrating 50 years of outstanding service to medicine this weekend with the reunion in South Australia of the class of 1959.  On behalf of all those whose lives you and others from the class of 1959 (and there are many of our finest medicos in this batch) have touched we salute you.

From the Desk of the District GovernorDear Fellow Rotarians, and Friends,

The recent devastating typhoons and floods in the Philippines, earthquakes in

Indonesia and tsunami in Samoa  have stretched relief agencies resources to the maximum. Once again the ShelterBox team was one of the first to respond with over $2.6 Million worth of e m e r g e n c y s h e l t e r despatched to the affected areas. We thank all those involved, it has been another great effort, but of course we now need to replenish our depleted stocks of boxes.

T h i s m o n t h w e h a v e   c o m p l e t e d the   interviews for the GSE Team to Normandy in France. From an excellent field of 20 candidates, we have selected four excellent team members and one reserve. Thanks to all involved. Another great Rotary Foundation Program.

We also had the very successful Climb for a Smile, the Rotary Youth Exchange Outbound Briefing and the Rotary Club of East Perth's Police Officer of the Year function. All excellent examples of Rotary at work in the community.

Our fight against Polio continues and 24th October is World Polio Day. It is a time to reflect on the great progress we have made and the effort still required to finish the job.   Another chance to help comes  on the 11th   November with the Amelia film night. We should also be planning on what our contribution will be next February to take the End Polio Now Campaign to the public.

Next month is The Rotary Foundation Month and I am looking forward to attending the annual Dr Ken Collins Address on the 16th November. Please let us know early of your attendance at this great night. Margaret and I will be flying back from the Rotary Institute in Newcastle in time for it. We will be launching our District Paul Harris Society that night and I encourage you all to seriously consider becoming

an inaugural member. Just think what good that US$1000 could do in the world we live in today.

Have a great month.

Can-do spirit brings Rotary's challenge near halfway markBy Dan Nixon  Rotary International News 22 October 2009

Creative Rotary club and district fundraisers, together with the generosity of individual Rotarians, have propelled Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge   almost to the midpoint in funding. As of 21 October, $99 million has been raised for Rotary's challenge through efforts like these:

2 An auction of more than 90 paintings in New Delhi raised $40,000 for the challenge. District 3010 and India PolioPlus Committee Chair

D e e p a k K a p u r organized the event in collaboration with the Swiss Embassy and Dhoomimal Gallery.

3 A concert organized by D i s t r i c t 5 2 3 0 (California, USA) featured eclectic jazz t r u m p e t e r a n d Grammy Award-winner Chris Botti. The event raised $30,000 for Rotary's challenge, drawing about 1,400 Rotarians and others, including actor and d i r e c t o r C l i n t Eastwood and his wife, Dina.

4 Fourteen Major League B a s e b a l l t e a m s provided support during the regular season, many donating portions of ticket sales. A game hosted by the

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim resulted in a $20,000 contribution, a Cincinnati Reds game $10,000, and a Kansas City Royals game $7,500.

5 The Rotary Club of Ry, Denmark, offered a car as first prize in a community raffle that garnered about $8,000.

6 D i s t r i c t 3 4 0 0 (Indonesia) organized a family fun day that featured a blood donation drive, aerobics workout, children's games, music, and a food and fashion bazaar, raising about $5,800.

7 Put Polio on Ice, a fundraiser sponsored by the Ontario Reign professional hockey team and District 5300 (parts of California and Nevada, USA), netted more than $5,000.

8 Posies to End Polio, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Saratoga Springs, New York, USA, garnered $4,050 through sales of red roses at $20 per dozen. The effort was preceded by a community forum

"In the face of difficult economic times, Rotarians are heartily commended for their steadfast commitment and resourcefulness in reaching this milestone of support for global polio eradication," says Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair Glenn E. The Rotary FoundationWeek 17: This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about fundraising for PolioPlus Partners.

What would you do to eradicate Polio? Would you shave off all your hair? Rotarians in District 5040 did

just that and raised $10,000 for PolioPlus Partners.

Would you hike 2,658 miles over six months? Rotarian Chrissy Wallace of California did to raise money for Rotary’s PolioPlus program.

Would you cycle 4,165 miles on the TransAmerica Trail? Rotarian Robert Keegan of Tennessee did to benefit PolioPlus Partners.

Dedicated individuals, clubs and districts continue to promote and support PolioPlus Partners at every opportunity possible. Many districts also gift their District Designated Funds to the polio effort.

What can you do for PolioPlus Partners?
