Stage 1 News (Years 1 & 2)

This term Year 1 have been looking at perspective and putting themselves in other shoes. In 1M’s case – they literally put themselves in the shoes of monsters (are they not TERRIFYING?!). They loved exploring the point of view of someone who looks scary, and deconstructing how the use of colours, costumes, facial expressions and body language can construct a point of view for the audience!

Mrs Mitchell 1M Class Teacher

Stage 2 News (Years 3 & 4)

This week in class, year 3 are presenting their speeches about their chosen natural world heritage site. Students have chosen a wide range of natural world sites to speak about covering every corner of the globe.

In addition to all of the great speech preparation at home, 3S had a special guest come to visit our classroom. Ryan Penhaligon’s grandfather, Mr Ian Cook spoke to 3S about his experience with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The students in 3S learnt a lot about different world heritage sites and were able to ask Mr Cook interesting questions about the places he has been. We were all inspired by all of the wonderful places to visit around the world.

Thank you to Mr Cook for spending time with us.

Stage 3 News (Years 5 & 6)

Last term, 6C had the exciting opportunity to appear on the children’s TV game show MOVE IT!

Screening on the Nine network's GO! Channel, MOVE IT! is a fast and fun-filled children’s game show that's all about putting items into the correct order. Those items could be anything - heaviest animals, largest countries or fastest cars.

For over four rounds, teams of students from 6C and 5T went head-to-head as they tried to correctly order the items in the different categories. The team with the highest score went on to play in the end game - the final.

In order to participate, successful students went through a series of hotly-contested auditions, which tested their general knowledge, ability to improvise, work as a member of a team and think clearly under pressure.

Students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and went home carrying bags and bags of fabulous prizes. Credit must go to the students for their outstanding behaviour on the day. They thoroughly impressed the members of the production team with their passion for learning, focus during filming and team spirit.

Palm Oil Free Day

The orangutans are losing their natural habitats because we are cutting down forests where the orangutans live to make palm oil. Palm oil is in over half the products in an average supermarket. These products include chips, ice cream and shampoo. The orangutans do not know how to live without the habitat in which they were bred and born, so we are slowly bringing them to extinction. To raise awareness for the orangutans, we will have a Palm Oil Free Day on the 6 November. On this day, we encourage you to not put products containing palm oil into your child’s lunchboxes so we can try to help these wonderful creatures survive.

Did You Know…

• Palm oil is often called many different things on different products, the two most common names being vegetable oil and vegetable fat. • Palm oil is not only killing orangutans but other animals as well. Also it isn’t very good for you. • Some products contain sustainable palm oil, which means that the palm trees are grown without destroying forests where orangutans live. • Not all types of palm trees produce palm oil.

PSSA T-Ball News - Week 2

On Friday 16th October, the PSSA T-Ball season recommenced. Despite the long break since the first half of the season, all our T-Ballers were ready and raring to go.

In our first match, all our teams played against each other. In the Year 6 Division, the Competitive team defeated the Social team 31-2 and in the Year 5 Division the Competitive team defeated the Social team 34-12. ‘Players of the Matches’ included: Jimmy Rowlands (5K – This was his debut game!), Cooper Johnston (5T), Eden King (5T), Billy Minnet (6B) and Serena Wong (6C).

In training after the game, the Year 5 players thoroughly enjoyed learning how to pitch and how to hit a pitched ball.

Well done to all involved!

The Secretary is responsible for carrying out the administrative tasks related to the decisions of the meetings as resolved. This does not mean that the Treasurer must undertake the actual bookkeeping themselves but they must ensure that the various sub-committee financial records have been kept to the Treasurer’s satisfaction. The Treasurer must ensure a case book or books are kept, recording all financial transactions of the P&C Association. At our School, the Treasurer works with three sub-committee treasurers and an assistant treasurer.

Please contact Anne Moal on [email protected] if you are interested in this role.

Entertainment Books

The books were given to us on consignment to raise money for our School. Families were asked to make payment or return the book by 25th May. If you still have an Entertainment Book provided to your child which has not yet been returned the payment is now overdue.

Please make payment online at www.entbook.com.au/20401s5. If you purchased the Entertainment™ Digital Membership, the Book does not form part of this Membership so please return it to the school office.

If you do not wish to purchase the Entertainment™ Book, please return it intact to the school office in the personalised envelope so we can update our records. We still have over 50 books outstanding and the school will have to absorb the cost if these are not returned. This has been such a successful fundraiser. So far we have sold 166 books and raised $2,324 so please help me try and reduce this cost of lost books.

We can’t finalise this fundraiser until all payment and books are returned. Please contact Sharmila Soorian on [email protected] if required.

Three Cheers for our Conductors!

The time is fast approaching to reflect on the year that has just been and to look forward to the year ahead. All three bands have enjoyed some great performances and success throughout the year and all of this would not have been possible without the dedication and leadership of our conductors Ray Hampton (Musical Director, Concert Band and Junior Band Conductor) and Luis Madrid (Senior Band Conductor). We have been very lucky this year to be led by two fine conductors. Ray has been with our school for more than 20 years and continues to inspire our musicians to achieve amazing sounds for ones so young. Luis started with us at the beginning of this year and it is fair to say that we have been extremely fortunate to have him on our musical team. Luis has enjoyed many personal successes this year and has recently been named as Musical Director and Conductor, Sydney Real Orchestra (encompassing top students from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music) and also Chief Orchestral Conductor for the UNSW Medical Music Society. Both Ray and Luis bring an enormous amount of musical knowledge and experience to our program here at NBPS which provides our budding musicians with the very best building blocks from which to begin their life-long love of music. Please join us in thanking them both for sharing their passion with us all. May 2016 be even brighter.

Band Photos from NSW Band Festival

Photos of all three bands from the NSW Band Festival have been distributed to the children. If you ordered a photograph last term (by leaving the money at the front office in an envelope with your child’s name on it) but have not received a photograph please contact Claudia Stephens ([email protected]). Alternatively, if you would like to order a photograph, you can do so through the Advanced Life Photography website advancedlife.com.au with the correct code - please contact your band co-ordinator for this.

Band fees

At NBPS we are proud to be able to offer our students an amazing band program under the talented guidance of Ray Hampton and Luis Madrid. Over the last several years we have fought hard to maintain band fees at a low level - over the last five years band fees have risen by only $20. Unfortunately over these years the costs of running a band program have risen quite dramatically and we are no longer able to maintain band fees at the same levels. As many of you are aware, we do not receive any funding from any other source and are completely reliant on our annual fees to cover costs. Given this, the Band Fees for 2016 will be set at $600 per band student. This will bring the fees at NBPS in line with other school band programs in our area and is a true reflection of the rise in costs. As in previous years the band fees will cover:

•Conductors fees

•Music purchases

•Tutor fees (camp and workshop)

•Band Camp

•Competitions and Festivals

We thank you for your understanding and continued support of our wonderful program. Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Liesel Wightwick at [email protected].
