NHS SALSA Club Meeting- Tues. 9/13
Students Advocating Life without Substance Abuse
Date: Tues. 9/13, Time: 7:30 - 7:55 AM Place: Room #728
SALSA is a mentoring and peer leadership program for high school students who have made a commitment to abstain from alcohol and other drug use. First formed in 2012, over 100 Needham High School students have been trained to be SALSA Youth Leaders. SALSA Youth Leaders participate in a wide variety of community service activities such as coordinating substance-free events for Needham High School students, planning and producing substance abuse prevention public service announcements, and participating in the Needham Coalition for Youth Substance Abuse Prevention. To date, SALSA Youth Leaders have provided over 1,000 hours of community service to the Needham community.
One of the primary activities of the SALSA group is the delivery of substance abuse prevention training to 8thgrade students at Pollard Middle School. SALSA Youth Leaders provide training on refusal skills (i.e., ways to deal with high risk situations), provide substance use data from the MetroWest Adolescent Health Survey to correct inflated misperceptions of the frequency of substance use at the high school level, and explain that they have personal goals that are associated with abstaining from alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use.
If your NHS student may be interested in participating in SALSA this year to earn Community Service hours let them knew we are always welcoming new members and hope they will stop by #728 on Tues. 9/13 at 7:30 AMto hear more about events planned for this school year.
Any questions about SALSA please contact Karen Mullen, SALSA Adviser ([email protected]).

Needham Baseball and Softball
Needham Baseball and Softball is operating a fall development league for 1st and 2nd graders in 2016. We seek up to four volunteers to assist with weekday afternoon practices, under the supervision of professional Frozen Ropes coaches.
Volunteers are expected to attend practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4pm-6pm at the Newman School (lower field). Volunteers will assist Frozen Ropes coaches in helping children complete drills, participate in an organized and fair manner, and have fun! These practices are designed to help younger baseball players hone their skills. All equipment will be provided by Frozen Ropes and the professional coaches will design and setup the drills. Our volunteers might toss underhand pitches, coax kids through drills, advise players on their form (by parroting the instructions of the Frozen Ropes coaches) and otherassistance as needed.
Volunteers do not need to be high school baseball players, but some familiarity with baseball or softball would be helpful. This is an excellent opportunity to see what teaching young kids is like and help these kids be active and improve. The practice schedule will run every Tuesday and Thursday from Tuesday, September 13th through Thursday October 20th. (Please note the week of October 11th and 13th is an off week).Volunteers may be asked, optionally, to assist with games on Sunday afternoons, although parents will be handling games primarily. Attendance at most sessions is necessary. Interested volunteers should contact, as soon as possible:
Paul Siegenthaler, Director, Fall Baseball, e-mail: [email protected]. phone/text: 781-789-7177.

Volunteers are one of Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Needham's most vital resources. We offer a wide range of volunteer opportunities, several of which are listed below. If you are interested in volunteering, please fill out the Volunteer Application and contact Tracy Murphy, Director of Volunteer Services, [email protected], or 781-453-5499 to arrange a brief interview.
Student Volunteer Opportunities include the following:
Volunteer Visitor Program A select group of volunteers are trained and assigned to visit with patients in the Derenzo Inpatient Care Unit, South II Inpatient Care Unit, Intensive Care Unit and the Emergency Department for short periods of time to provide conversation, companionship and appropriate non clinical mind-body activities.
Greeters As welcome ambassadors to the hospital, volunteers are placed in high traffic areas to greet visitors and to escort patients and families to appointments throughout the hospital. Greeters assist BID-Needham Patient Access and Registration staff to facilitate an efficient waiting area at the Main Entrance to the hospital, as well as other departments.
Escorts Volunteers work to assist medical staff with non-clinical duties. As part of a team of volunteers during a designated three hour shift, individuals are responsible for a variety of non-clinical assignments such as transporting patients discharged from day surgery or the inpatient units, executing laboratory sample runs, transferring patients to radiology and other departments, escorting patients to medical appointments, providing directions and an assortment of duties and errands to assist staff.
Students are assigned to one shift per week. Shifts run from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.
The Summer Student Volunteer program runs for approximately six week during July and August. Applications for the summer program are accepted in the late winter.
The benefits of being a volunteer are many, and they include
• Volunteering provides a positive outlet for helping others and is a terrific way to stay connected to your community.
• BID–Needham is a great place to make new friends and have new experiences in an environment filled with camaraderie and respect.
• Reference letters to enhance college or work applications. • Volunteering can provide a healthy boost to your self-esteem and life satisfaction.
We hope to hear from you soon!

Health Office Screening Update
According to Massachusetts Department of Public Health policy, the health office will be conducting health screenings for students in grades nine and ten. Vision, hearing and postural screenings will be performed for grade nine. Height and weight measurement and BMI calculation will be performed for grade ten. A Body Mass Index or BMI is a measure that is used to show a person’s “weight for height for age” and can be a useful tool in identifying possible health risks. The purpose of the BMI Screening Program is to give you information about your child’s weight status and ideas for living a healthy life. Massachusetts schools have measured heights and weights of students each year since the 1950’s. According to the state’s new BMI screening regulation which passed in April 2009, schools must now collect the heights and weights of students in grades 1, 4,7 and 10. Each child’s height and weight will then be used to calculate their BMI. The results of your child’s BMI will be confidentially kept in their health record and available to you upon request. This year the vision, hearing screenings and postural screenings will take place for freshmen beginning in February 2017. We are planning to conduct the BMI screenings for sophomores during one of their PE/Wellness classes in late September and early October 2016. If you do not wish to have your child participate in the height, weight and BMI screening or in the vision, hearing or postural screenings please send a written request to the health office.
Please feel free to call with any questions or concerns.
