Building a Foundation for Strong Economic Development FISCAL YEAR

At the start of the fiscal year, the North Broad Renaissance (NBR) worked to establish a solid foundation to support positive economic development – from City Hall to Germantown Avenue. The organization secured a vendor to upgrade the North Poles, hireda cleaning vendor to support cleaning efforts, worked with the City to add seven cameras along North Broad Street, secured a vendor to help maintain 61 planters along North Broad, and executed a marketing strategy that helped community stakeholders stay connected and engaged in the work of the NBR and North Broad development.

Investing in a Clean and Safe North Broad

Beginning in July 2016, The North Broad Renaissance (NBR) launched our clean and safe efforts and worked closely with local businesses, the City of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Police Department, SEPTA Police, Temple Police and the Office of Information Technology to accomplish key projects under the Clean and Safe strategic area of focus. This included monitoring litter trends that supported efforts to extend cleaning services along North Broad, increasing cleaning hours to target that after school let out and adding seven additional live stream cameras along North Broad at the following locations:

Broad and ClearfieldBroad and IndianaBroad and GlenwoodBroad and ParrishBroad and GreenBroad and Spring GardenBroad and CallowHill

The impact? According to research, projects focused on public safety and clean-up have a big impact on the businesses and residential community, as people's perception of a place plays a major role in determining where they will stop, shop and live. This means more customers for the businesses in the area, which can lead to increase employment opportunities.

Expanding with the Support of New Investors

As a Voluntary Special Service District, the NBR relies on voluntary donations from stakeholders to help the organization accomplish its goals, while supporting business development along the corridor. This FY, the NBR secured a total of $638,978, which lends to our overall fundraising goal of $1.75M by the year 2020. These funds will help the NBR maintain projects, increase coverage of cleaning, and support our continued efforts to revitalize commerce, communities and culture along North Broad Street.

Creating Green Space and Healthier Environments

The NBR is responsible for maintaining 61 planters along North Broad. Thanks to PowerCorp Camden, the Temple Alumni Global Days of Service initiative, Turner Construction, Compass Rose, and local volunteers the NBR executed back to back landscaping community events that helped beautify 12 planters and support efforts to make North Broad greener and prettier.

The NBR also contracted with Synterra Partners to help the NBR maintain all 61 planters moving forward and to work on a potential greening project down North Broad Street.

The impact? Urban advantages of greenspace include:• Help regulate and improve air quality and climate• Reduce energy consumption by countering the warming effects of paved surfaces• Reduced heat buildup• Reduced soil erosion• Lends to an overall healthy community and quality of life

Serving as a Connector and Resource for the North Broad Community

Since the very start, Marketing and Communications has been extremely important to the NBR. Since July 2016, the NBR has been featured or mentioned in more than 20 media outlets and sought after as a source of information for all things North Broad. In addition, the NBR has hosted more than a half dozen community outreach events, has increased our social media engagement by 63% and our email database by more than 300. Lastly, we added 5 corporate sponsors to our donor lists, 13 individual donors, and more than 100 volunteers from across the city who donated good ole fashion sweat equity.

The NBR also created awareness for the various projects and development taking place along North Broad Street, helping businesses connect to resources that can help them grow and accomplish development goals.

The impact? According to research, successful community involvement is based upon information and dialogue. Only an informed community can be part of the decision- making process, which then will lead to a sustainable revitalization project. Community members who contribute to the revitalization planning process will better understand the process and will be more likely to support a project and be invested for long-term success.

This past year, the NBR had more than 100 Volunteers who supported our capital campaign and donating thousands of dollars in sweat equity to help with landscaping efforts.

Establishing the Foundation for Sustainable Economic Development

Now that the foundation is established, the NBR is excited to start the new fiscal year by executing on its Economic Development goals, which include:

• Completing upgrades to the North Poles, so that they can become a tourist attraction - allowing the North Broad business community to take advantage of the $11 billion hospitality and tourism market.

• Creating an attraction package that incentivize small businesses in the professional service industry to move to North Broad.

• Developing a tech hub that supports the North Broad data center, and attracts tech related businesses to North Broad and taking advantage of the education hub along North Broad to prepare the next generation of our workforce with tech skills for gainful employment.

• Working with the City and community partners to establish principals around the Health Zone aimed at attracting health related businesses and partnering with current businesses to help promote a healthy lifestyle in the 19140 zip code – bringing economic and community development together.

All of these efforts will help decrease vacancies along the North Broad corridor and promote a positive environment for the surrounding community.

Lastly, the NBR is happy to end the year with nearly 90% of our contracts being awarded to minority or disadvantaged businesses, and ensuring that employment for the North Broad community is among our many economic development priorities.

The impact? Research shows that organizations like the NBR helps increase property value by at least 4%. In addition, a corridor with a range of complementary businesses and other amenities can increase employment and can serve as an incubator for local entrepreneurs, which provides employment opportunities for thesurrounding communities.
