NATIONAL SOCIAL SOCIETY

ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012

Message from Chairman Dear Friends,

As I write this message, there is much change and promise of progress and development around us. There are fresh faces heading our government and we expect rapid growth in all areas, as the Development sector continues to do its best for bringing about social change in India

NATIONAL SOCIAL SOCIETY encourages volunteers to contribute their time, skills and energies to enhance the work Being carried out at the grass root level. We are happy to record that in the two years since our inception, we have grown from placing a handful of volunteers/interns with partner NGOs, to forging new collaborations, partnerships and programs in order to strengthen our volunteer program.

Young people are the strength and asset of a nation, and it is in the age bracket of 18-35 years that the maximum number of our volunteers/interns comes. The largest numbers of these are postgraduates who have contributed to programs that fitted their specialization or abilities best. Their contribution directly impacts the lives of many with whom they interact. It is heartening to note that the ratio of women volunteers/interns is steadily increasing.

Our mission is directed towards bringing about positive social change. Through our training workshops we influence volunteers and groups/communities within which they work, and encourage them to contribute to the development sector. By consolidating activities and expanding our collaborations, we strive to add value to the work of partner NGOs.

I would like to thank all our committed volunteers, partner NGOs, supporters, trainers and the Joining Hands team for all their hard work and dedication fellow trustees.

Best wishes

Yours Sincerely

SANJAY BAIRWA

(Chairman)

ABOUT US

About organization National Social Society solicits support to reach out to the first 300 girl children. The

NSS concept motivates father to take charge of their daughters and ensure that the

daughters Rights are protected in every way and provide a secure and dignified future.

However, the fathers are financially poor and that is one of the reasons that the girls are

out of school. Once the girl children have reached the required standard of education,

they shall be mainstreamed into Govt. Schools, where education is free thereafter.

Although the mainstreamed child in the Govt. School gets free education to avoid them

dropping out and acquire the requisite quality and standards, the child has to be

assisted with "Remedial Education" for which similar expenses are to be incurred on

similar numbers for at least 2/3 years. As they settle down, the support can be

withdrawn.

NATIONAL SOCIAL SOCIETY is an NGO that aims to provide people from the world

over the opportunity to work in evaluated and credible NGOs in India. Programs are

selected that best match the skills, area of interest, expertise, and time availability of the

individual, with a view to strengthen and add value to the ongoing work of NGOs in

India’s social development sector.

Women Teaching Center

Gender inequality in education is extreme. Girls

are less likely to access school, to remain in

school or to achieve in education. Education

helps men and women claim their rights and

realize their potential in the economic, political

and social arenas. It is also the single most

powerful way to lift people out of poverty.

Education plays a particularly important role as a

foundation for girls’ development towards adult

life. It should be an intrinsic part of any strategy

to address the gender-based discrimination

against women and girls that remains prevalent

in many societies. To make women more

innovative and creative we started Education for

Women. We have provided training for women

those are working in houses and not able to

speak hindi very well..We are trying to educate

them or better communication in their life.

NSS’s Literacy Programme for illiterate women within the age group of 18 to 45 years,

who have been made literate in slum area of Delhi. Several women participants from

slum areas were benefited by this program Scheme of Condensed Courses of

Education was initiated by NSS in 2008 to cater to the needs of adult girls / women who

could not join mainstream education system or were school dropouts. The scheme aims

to provide educational opportunities to girls / women above the age of 15 years along

with additional inputs of skill development /

Education of women can be helpful in eradicating many social evils such as dowry

problem, unemployment problem, etc. Social peace can easily be established

Girls Child Day

The purpose of this day is to focus

attention on the depleting female to

male ratio and take a stand on

issues of female foeticide, domestic

violence and malnutrition in

children. Campaigns around these 3

major concerns are highlighted and

the government tries to raise

awareness as well as propagate gender equality among people. We celebrated this day

with children with lots of fun and activities.

Skill Development Program

The NSS undertaken youth counseling center at, Delhi the main areas of our

intervention are education, community health, socio-cultural unity, national character

building and other activities of national interest. On the other hand the center also helps

the youth groups for their carrier building, educational supports, information on

development policies and avenues of employment and self-employment etc.

This center is planning to fulfill the present needs of youths (both student and non-

student) as at the present juncture the socio-political and educational systems affected

the youth force leading the youth unrest and violence. Efforts are on to cover at least

thousand youths per annum under this program effectively. During the year 20010-11,

approximately 248 youth including 98 females were provide with counseling and

guidance services for their career settlements and other problems. We are mainly

interested in empowerment local community by making them politically aware of their

rights and giving them economic strength.

MID DAY MEAL TO CHILDREN

The Mid-Day Meal Program has played a crucial role in promoting education for children

in the country, encouraging children to attend school and partake of nutritious and

healthy meals. This has not only increased attendance of children at schools but also

gives children the required amount of nutrition.

Family life Education

NSS was organization Family life education at Delhi about

participated in the program, The program implemented with the

support & cooperation of community people and local NGOs,

who extend their supportive hands for successful completion of

the program, The society invited prominent sociologist,

psychologist, doctors and lawyers to aware and guidance

various topics related to orientation of youth for promotion of family and societal

development, community actions against dowry torture, sexual harassment, legal rights

family life. The participants also discuss their family disputes and solution to the

Speakers.

Consumer Protection NSS organized two days Consumer Awareness Camp at,

Delhi. Approximately 150 participants attend the Consumer

Awareness Camp from different parts of Delhi and NCR areas.

In this program experts from different sectors invited for aware

to participants about consumer rights and other aspects like

health, education, insurance, legal property and shared their

views with the participants. The experts also explain about consumer help line,

consumer rights etc. The Society also distributed pamphlets, brochures and folders the

participants. The organization extends breakfast, lunch and materials to participants in

the program in the program. The program concluded with the vote of thanks.

Vocational Training Center Vocational education plays an important role

in providing employment to people and in

raising their standard of loving. Keeping in

view of importance of such type of

education, one tailoring and cutting centre

training centre were opened in Slum area of

Vasant Kunj. By these training centers 25

women in tailoring and cutting trade were

trained properly. The duration of these training

centers was of six months. Out of these

trainers, about 20 women are doing tailoring

and cutting job work and they are earning

handsome income by getting these training.

Their standard of living has also improved.

Now they are self dependent and helping

their families.

Rural Development

Local social workers and students actively

supported us in our rural development

programme. We propose to carry out major

development work in villages in the future.

We are now in the process of contacting

concerned government agencies for

organizing joint collaborative progressive

programs in the future.

We executed different rural development

programmes with the help of the local

people. We got them involved in

repairing of village roads repaired. They

actively participated in repairing and

cleaning of village drains and cleaning and

chlorinating drinking water wells.

Rural development was traditionally

associated with agriculture. The policy shift

towards integrated rural development

reflects the complex linkages and

interactions within the system of overall rural

development. Putting too much emphasis

on agriculture and ignoring its linkages to

the rest of the economy could result in analytical bias. Rural development provides an

alternative to agriculture as a source of incomes and livelihoods.

Our Society executed different rural development programmes with the help of the local

people in rural areas. We involved them in improving their own fields of work. We

received active support from local social workers, students and also from

the local common people. With our combined efforts we were able to carry out a

number of development works like repairs of village roads, cleaning of drains and

chlorinating drinking water wells.

Our purpose is to create consciousness about the current position and act as a catalyst

role to facilitate collective mass actions so as to assert their rights and entitlements. To

provide critical inputs to enhance their ability to fight structural causes of poverty and

demand larger change. To set up models for replication and to build capability for

addressing local issues and initiating based activities.
