National Honor Society
Eligible Candidate PresentationRonald Lucarelli, President 2011-2012
Dr. Michelle Haag, Advisor
Welcome!
Welcome to the NHS candidate informational presentation
You are here today because you are a student with an excellent academic standing and potentially can join our service organization.
Today’s presentation will give you a sense of what NHS is, what the group does, our procedures, and the application process.
Ronald LucarelliI am the current NHS President for Mentor High’s chapter of the National Honor Society
I have been in the NHS two years, and I have donated over 100 hours to the service of this organization.
Beside NHS President, I am also involved in Student Government as our Feed Lake County Chairperson and the Fighting Cardinal Marching Band’s Drum Major
What is NHS?
NHS is the acronym of National Honor Society.
This is a service based group that focuses on dedicating our membership to the community for whatever needs it may have. We help at humane societies, food banks, Farm Parks, etc.
This is an apply for acceptance club.
The 4 Pillars of NHS
The Four Pillars of NHS are what our organization bases everything around:
Scholarship
Leadership
Service
Character
Scholarship
Scholarship is all about the academic merit that is associated with your name. You must maintain a 3.5 GPA to be a part of NHS.
It’s an unwritten rule that members of NHS share the character trait of being hard workers in the classroom. Your work ethics and assignments should be well polished and high quality.
Leadership
National Honor Society is a service organization that is based upon leadership.
We need leaders that represent our school well since our impact is on the community, not the school (as much).
Leaders help organize all the different events we take part in throughout the year.
Service
Service is obviously what we do here at NHS.
Students that tend to donate their time to service tend to be the same students who thrive in the NHS community. *IF YOU DON’T WANT TO GET INVOLVED, DON’T BOTHER APPLYING!
NHS requires 15 service hours each year from all members. Interest in service is a must!
Character
Your character gives the people around you a sense of who you are and what you stand for.
If your character is not something of good standing, NHS may not be for you.
This nationwide organization accepts students of good moral standing in and out of schol and are not afraid to “Take chances, make mistakes, get messy!” as Ms. Frizzle would say to be the best you can be.
The Application Process!
If you have not yet received your application and need one, they are out on the table outside B-200. That is essentially NHS HQ. We keep agendas, our bulletin board, and all other information posted somewhere around there.
APP Process Cont.So lets talk the application:
5 Form types
General Information- Name, Contact info, etc.
School Support- Behavior, Integrity Check
School Involvement
Service Involvement
Teacher Recommendations
General Info
One, obviously fill it out! Its one of the most important papers you fill out in the application!
READ THE INFORMATION FROM DR. HAAG. THE FRONT PAGE DOES GIVE YOU “THE SCOOP” ON NHS. If you cannot uphold any requirements posted, you should not apply.
School Support
This is a behavior/ integrity check by somebody who can access your Infinite Campus behavior log. Yes, we trust you, but we want to be assured you’re in good standing.
This sheet needs minimum filled out but give counselors time to do these. Turn in at least 4 days in advance of the due date (May 11th)
School Extra Involvement
This is a section completely filled out by you!
You need to fill in activities you take part in during the school year, as we would like to know what you do, how long, etc.
This is a highly weighted section of the app, so please don’t blow it off...
Signatures from advisors are required!
Volunteer Service
This page of the app is also filled out by you with verification signatures of volunteer coordinators or someone of the establishment.
We would like to see how important service has been to you so far.
It is to your advantage to put more things on the page to not only complete it, but make it unique.
Accredited RecommendationsThis part only requires you to fill out the evaluator name and your name.
You give this to a teacher of your choice, and they will fill it out on your behalf and return it to Dr. Haag.
You do not get to see these, and you must give time ahead for teachers to do these.
Bosses, counselors, volunteer coordinators are all acceptable as well.
Tips for the App Process
One, don’t procrastinate your application! I’m serious... If you wait until the day before it is due, you WON’T get all the signatures, leaving your app incomplete.
Perhaps for the activity/service section, make a portfolio on a word document of things you have achieved and participated in. It will come in handy for college too (common app).
Choose teachers that actually like you!
Tips...
Try to find the most unique things about you for your volunteer/ participation log. Just like a college app, it always helps to have something interesting to remember that nameless application (all apps are grouped, but names are not on forms)
DON’T PUT YOUR NAME ANYWHERE THERE IS NOT A NAME LINE.
Tips..
Again, giving time for apps is essential, especially if you’re giving them to people outside MHS. They have to return them. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO RETURN THEM ON THEIR BEHALF. PLAN ACCORDINGLY.
STARRED THOUGHT: FAIL TO PLAN, PLAN TO FAIL!
Pay attention to detail and neatness. A sloppy application that is beat up reflects poor management skills and lack of care.
Some other things..
NHS is a time commitment, activities are on weekends and weekdays. If you’re a “busy bee”, you best learn how to use a calendar efficiently or pass this prestigious honor.
We need people that are ready to lead and can do this! You are here today because the school feels you may be the perfect applicant!
