It’s been a whirlwind learning experience to say the least, and at times perhaps even a battle against the incessant fear of failure that inevitably comes with “start-up life.” I’m still not certain how “ex-corporate rat racer turned self-proclaimed dream chaser” is going to turn out, but I can say with much conviction that it is a leap I’m positively glad I took! I just wanted to say from the bottom of my heart, (or should I say in keeping with the Socials- champagne flute?) thank you to each and everyone one of you who have supported me along the way, to those of you who have just found your way here, and to all of y’all for allowing me to take you along on my crazy little journey! It has been more than I can ever ask for!

Do stay for the Social, we’re just getting started!

F R O M T H E B O T T O M O F M Y C H A M P A G N E F L U T E

The night before I had a meltdown as would any fashion loving girl- two weeks of wardrobe for two insanely contrary climates

rolled into one mini carry-on? Ladies, it can be done!

And then the food came with directions :(

But it was more than okay, it was delicious.

Kicking off the trip in true Society Social style, “cheers!” Off to the facility overseas. I had butterflies as I boarded my first flight!

Excited to finally jump in after months of exchanging emails.

Philippe, the talented engineer, moments before he broke out into dance. He likes to live sparkly!

Editing down candy-colored swatches. We’re water based and eco-friendly!

Society Social, is that really you?!

It’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than abso-lutely boring, right? Playing around with the first round of hostess gown silk samples sourced from Seoul by my brother. Thanks LT!

The building began!

Handcrafting the cocktail table

He was speedy Gonzalez…

and quite the craftsman.

Philippe’s technical version of my sketches that brought Society Social to life

Proudly using sustainable materials! Rattan peel dipped in water to be softened before they are

wrapped around the rattan poles.

So humbled by the hard work of the people behind the furniture

The samples were born!!

I watched the making of the dining chair!

I wanted to make sure the light assembly on some of the pieces could be handled by even the most incompetent in following directions…

We had so much fun working together!

None of this could have happened without the incredible team

And as usual, I squeezed in some fun. Yes, that is my karaoke score. Don’t ask me to do it again.

And two months later, I met my baby bar carts and my heart almost burst with joy! I truly hope you love!

Headed back home to wait.

At Society Social we fiercely believe that being the best version of yourself is the only version to be which is why we were so inspired by Bobbi Brown’s Pretty Powerful campaign. The campaign celebrates real women who don a bright eye and rosie cheek even without the aid of Brown’s must-have makeup line. Although we agree with Bobbi in that beauty and confidence come from within, like her, we will never turn down a day of playing with makeup and mimosas!

Don’t be late for the Social! Our make-up artist layered on eye-shadow, blush, and lipstick in slightly darker, more dramatic shades right over our model’s daytime look for a quick and easy work to play transition.

PART 1: DOWN TO BUSINESS

DESCRIBE YOUR LIFE BEFORE YOU ARRIVED TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW. Before I had the pleasure of starting Loom with my two co-founders, I was in academia for several years studying to become a psychologist. As I pursued my doctorate, I found it very hard to stifle my desire for wanting to be apart of something entrepreneurial (it’s in the family genes!) So I made the move from academia and got my consulting chops at Deloitte before settling into a smaller consulting firm where I learned a lot about small business, sales and the importance of a client-centric culture. I should mention, I lived in Boston for 10 years before moving to NYC in July of 2010 with my husband. So, I have to confess, I’m a total NYC-neophyte. I spent many a fun weekend in my 20s coming to New York, but am just now learning to be a New Yorker.

TELL US ABOUT THE MOMENT WHEN YOU KNEW YOU SIMPLY HAD TO GO FOR IT. It was Fourth of July 2009 and I was walk-ing with a very good friend in Chatham, MA – we walked into an adorable home boutique and I had this moment where I knew I wanted to start a business in home décor because I have a special affinity for beautiful bed linens. As I noodled around with different ideas, I knew I wanted a web-based company because I was very interested in learning about e-commerce, and I wanted the brand to be associated with superior customer experience because there has been such an awful trend away from focusing on great service. In an effort to crystallize my venture idea and meet

other entrepreneurs, I took an evening class at MIT where I met my now co-founder Ashley Baker who was getting her MBA at MIT Sloan.

WHAT’S THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE OTHERS CONTEMPLATING THE SAME? The one thing I tell people who have an idea they are thinking about pursuing a new venture, is to be ready to be “ok” with not knowing. There is no right or wrong way to do things, but you have to make a decision, be confident and go. Again, if you doubt yourself then you will slow yourself and the team down — this is something I have to work on everyday.

YOUR FAVORITE MOTIVATIONAL MANTRA “Fake it ‘till you make it!” I learned this as a college freshman playing with really talented athletes who I looked up to and a coach I revered.

PART 2: STYLE FILE YOU DON’T LIVE IN NEW YORK CITY WITHOUT HAVING COVETABLE STYLE. LET’S TALK FAVES!

BRAND/CUT JEANS Citizens of Humanity / “Ava” straight leg

We’re guilty of entertaining a torrid love affair with all things NY. Since Manhattan is your playground and being a tourist is no fun, we want to know your fave spots for…

SHOPPING I’m not a huge shopper but when I do feel like splurging, I tend to love the no name boutiques in Soho to find unique acces-sories.

PARKS I’m a huge fan of running along the bridle path in Central Park because it feels a bit more sane. My other go-to is running north in Riverside Park towards the GWB. Just north of 104th street the path starts to feel much more quiet along the water – it feels very tranquil.

RESTAURANTS My husband and I love this place in the West Village called ‘Good’, it has the most outrageous mac ‘n’ cheese.

MUSEUMS I have to say, I’m not a museum person, I really prefer to be outside when I have free time. However, I do love the Museum of Natural History.

HAPPY HOUR I live on the UWS so we love to have Friday night beers at the Boat Basin on the water. It feels so summery there. If I’m coming from work or meeting with a new contact, we love to go to the Crosby Street Hotel for a glass of wine. They have a won-derfully eclectic look in the restaurant and sitting room -- I would love to see their guest rooms!

NIGHTLIFE Being a recent new mom, I don’t stay out that late any longer so I don’t have a favorite spot, but you can’t go wrong in the meat packing.

I have to have my morning fix of NPR. Because I lived in Bos-ton for 10 years, I like to listen to the local station on my iPad (WBUR) in the morning with my coffee.

IF YOU COULD CHOOSE ANY INTERIOR DESIGNER TO DECORATE YOUR HOME WHO WOULD IT BE? I just discovered an amazing young de-signer from San Francisco, Beth Martin of Elizabeth Martin Interiors. She has a fresh and classic look and knows how to blend affordable pieces with unique finds.

SIGNATURE SCENT Marc Jacobs Daisy

BOOK Definitely the Steig Larrson trilogy but my favorite of the three is “The Girl Who Played with Fire” because Lisbeth Salander kicks a$$ in this book!

PART 1: DOWN TO BUSINESS

DESCRIBE YOUR LIFE BEFORE YOU ARRIVED TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW. I grew up in Port-land, Oregon before chasing the sun down to Orange County, California where I at-tended college at Chapman University. After creating a successful e-commerce business selling Greek apparel online (www.Custom-GreekThreads.com) with my husband in college, we decided to fulfill our dreams of living in NYC. A few years into our business I decided to start a blog (www.TheIcon-icBlog.com) as a creative outlet for my love of cooking, entertaining, travel and fashion.

After moving to Manhattan last fall, I began attending different design events in the city. After a few months, I was inspired to find a niche in which I could utilize our production facility in California and get to develop my design and merchandising skills.

TELL US ABOUT THE MOMENT WHEN YOU KNEW YOU SIMPLY HAD TO GO FOR IT. After going to my first fabric store in NYC and realizing the potential of pairing such great prints with monograms, I knew that I had to go for it.

BEST & WORST ABOUT TAKING THE RISK AND FOLLOWING YOUR HEART The best part is the adventure and learning new industries and practices. Often times you have to adapt a whole new skill set in order to properly grow with your company. The worst part is the fear of failure. You have to really put yourself out there in order to be-come successful and failing in front of your friends, family and colleagues can be painful. However, I’ve learned that most people respect you for taking the risk, regardless of whether or not your venture succeeds.

WHAT’S THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE OTHERS CONTEMPLATING THE SAME? You can start small and still think

big. I always encourage people to take their million dollar ideas and figure out ways to test them for free (or for a very small cost). You are bound to be successful if you try enough different ideas and you can test out more ideas if you don’t have to put thou-sands into testing each project.

YOUR FAVORITE MOTIVATIONAL MANTRA “Life is not about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” -George Bernard Shaw

PART 2: STYLE FILE

BRAND/CUT JEANS I live and die by skinnies and I love my black pair of Ernest Sewns.

BEST CURRENT TREND Cat Eye Sunnies. So glam.

WORST TREND Anything acid washed. I just can’t even fathom...

WARDROBE STAPLE A touch of python. On a bag, a skirt, a shoe. It all works.

FLATS VS. PUMPS Both are necessary evils. Even when I don’t anticipate it, I end up walking here in the city so I always carry a great pair of flats (love Kate Spades and J.Crew’s) in my bag if I leave in heels. Or I carry a great pair of pumps in my bag so I can enjoy my journey in flats but look completely fab as soon as I arrive at my destination.

MOST NECESSARY ACCESSORY Costume Jewelry. I can’t keep track of what piece is supposed to be the statement now

- cuffs, necklace, earrings, rings?? But I love them all. I always choose just one big piece, but it makes all of the difference in the

SHOPPING 1) SoHo (right around Prince and 14th). The Moncler store makes me want to buy a Chalet in the mountains and move to Switzerland.

2) The Flatiron District for great chains like Club Monaco, Intermix, Kate Spade, etc. It’s good for a serious day of shopping.

3) Madison Avenue. The Michael Kor’s collection store is to die for. Dennis Basso squeezes more glamour per square foot than any one else. The Herme’s boutique is beyond. I could honestly just walk up and down the street and enjoy the window displays (so much more bearable than trying to walk down 5th Ave without getting trampled). And I love to stroll down the tree lined streets between Madison and 5th for some dreamy real-estate shopping.

4) If you have to do 5th Ave, don’t go on a weekend and try to go during work hours. It gets so crammed. I love Bergdorf Goodman for serious inspiration and serious price tags. Lunch at their Cafe BG is so fab and they give you macarons with your check (Kelly Wearst-ler designed the interior). Henri Bendel’s is a must. It is housed in an old townhouse, so it feels like you are shopping at someone’s incredible home. Make sure to take the stairs up on the left side to get the full experience. The shoe salon at Saks cannot be missed. It is so large that it has it’s own zip code.

PARKS Madison Square Park, Central Park - Specifically Bethestha Fountain (enter at 72nd st) and “the mall” (the tree lined walkway, not the shopping center) and Sheep’s Meadow for picnics, Washing-ton Square Park down in the West Village with the chess players and NYU students. I also enjoy going for runs around the reservoir just like Jackie O.

RESTAURANTS David Burke Townhouse, STK, Fig & Olive - Meat-packing location, Butter, The Mark Restaurant, Sarabeth’s for brunch

MUSEUMS Museum of the City of NY, Costume Institute at the MET

HAPPY HOUR The Hurricane Club. Amazing ambiance and delish drinks.

NIGHTLIFE Rose Bar at the Plaza, SoHo House, The Boom Boom Room, The Jane Hotel.

T H E D R A M A O F T H E D R A P E R A DARING THROWBACK On a mid-summer’s day in one of Philadel-

phia’s most gorgeous and architecturally distinguished neighborhoods, we found ourselves in a stately, early 20th century mansion that made our jaws drop and our heads giving an admiring nod to the past.

Highly inspired by the cocktail culture of the 1960’s, aptly depicted on the popular televi-sion series Mad Men; we couldn’t help but to recognize the infamous Don. Indulgent and daring is the name of his game and like our devilishly upholstered bar cart, or accent table if you please, his wily ways are not for the faint of heart.

She’s a stylin’ shopaholic with a keen eye for pretty pieces high and low. Meet our Cocktail Cart Curator, Jeanne Chan of Shop Sweet Things with Jeanne, who shows us how her shop-ping cart can take a bar cart to beautiful!

I love mixing high end pieces with low end pieces. Like the Georg Jensen Cocktail set, I love that it’s sleek yet very sophisticated. It’s a splurge but it will easily ‘wow’ your guests. On the other end, the stemless flute/martini glassware from CB2 is a steal. It serves as a champagne or martini flute and drinking glasses or tumblers. It’s like two products in one, and it saves space on the cocktail cart! As for other bar accessories, I like to keep things fun by adding lots of pretty colors and whimsical designs. I adore the paper napkins from Citta Design because it reminds me of a beautiful piece of art, and it’s a great way to add flair. I also picked out some of my favorite spirits, including a Hibiski Japanese blend Whisky to impress the gents. To set the mood, a mini candle from Diptyque will always do the trick!

THE KEY TO A

Fantastical Fête BY MACKENZIE HORAN

At Society Social we like to live everyday like it’s our birthday, so much so that we even designed our pieces in hopes that they would induce frolic and good cheer. This means special occasions at the Social are double the excitement and infinitely fun. Here are invaluable, party-ready tips from a few of our favorite bloggers on how to take your perfect party to the next level- hello, fantastical fête!

THINGS THAT SPARKLE,

THINGSTHATSPARKLEBLOG.BLOGSPOT.COM

MIMI+MEG, MIMIANDMEGBLOG.COM

“We love to throw cocktail parties but when we do we always have plenty of food available — alcohol and empty stomachs don’t mix! We also make sure to have at least one really good non-alcoholic beverage on hand so that our non-drinking friends have something interesting and delicious as well. Right now I’m into ‘mini’ everything, from champagne splits to mini cupcakes to milkshake shots. I think those small indul-gences add up to a lot of big fun!”

THE ZHUSH, THEZHUSH.BLOGSPOT.COM

“To me, the most important part of enter-taining is for the host to have a good time! You set the mood for everyone else. Lots of cocktails, delicious food, and fun decor are key for every event. And a perfect party dress doesn’t hurt either!”

“The most important things for setting the vibe you want for a fantastic fête are the location, music, drinks, and lighting. But it’s always fun to add creative touches like fun tinsel swizzle sticks or confetti decor. Pick your theme, vibe, or color palette, do some research, and have a clear vision of what you want.”

“Throwing a fab fête does not mean drain-ing your bank account. I mean a girl’s got to have a little cash left over for those amazing pair of shoes she will wear to the soirée! Any party can be a smash if you pay attention to the details. It’s the small things like the DIY centerpieces or the hand-picked playlist that completely set the mood of the event. Cheers!”

“Have a signature drink at your party. It’s a great way to personalize your event and gives your guests an easy go-to for the evening!”

“Nothing says soirée like good music, so be sure to plan ahead and invest in some good tunes to set the atmosphere and get your friends relaxed and mingling comfortably with each other. Even if you’re on a budget, you can pull off a fabulous fête quite easily. The best thing to do is to pick a few ele-ments to focus on — whether it’s the food, drinks, music, decor, or games — and do those things really well rather than spread-ing your resources across them all. You want to have a wow factor!”

TIFFANY ASHLEY

“There’s a lot of responsibility on the hostess to throw a good fête, so I think it’s just as important to be a good guest. RSVP promptly, never arrive empty-handed, and be the good friend who stays late to help clean up — you’re sure to be invited back!”

HOST A BOOZY BEGUILEMENT

STRAIGHT FROM THE GLITTER GIRLS THEMSELVES!1- ALWAYS HAVE BUBBLY ON HAND! Whether it be an impromptu celebration or a planned fete for dozens; being stocked up with champagne is a necessity for Glitter Girls! Some of our favorites include. Mumm Napa Brut Rose, La Marca Proseco, Korbel Blanc de Noir and Vignette Wine Country Soda (non-alcoholic).

2- UTILIZE FRESH FLOWERS & SIMPLE GLASS JARS TO CREATE A FESTIVE ENVIRONMENT. Stop by the farmers market, your garden or the local grocery store for fresh buds - we love the simplicity of bright flowers in glass jars we've recycled or found around the house.

3- CREATE A PERSONALIZED MENU. Take 5 minutes and print your menu on fun or simple paper for a personal touch at any gathering and set one at each place setting.

4- OPT FOR LINENS. Not only only are you being eco-conscious when using fabric linens, but you're creating a luxurious touch for your guests. Simple solid color napkins can be jazzed up with fun trim & a hot glue gun, or have fun with a bold pattern- one of our favor-ites is Hammocks & High Tea. http://shop.hammocksandhightea.com/category/napkins

5- SNACKS A PLENTY! Offer your guests appetizers upon arrival, from brunch to dinner - having snacks for mingling and munching is key to a successful party. Stay simple with cheese & crackers, fruit, veggies, nuts, gourmet popcorn and dark chocolate.

A SUMMER SOIREEFriends were invited over on a hot, summer night and were promised pizzas with an abundance of toppings and cold drinks.

A farmers’ market trip ensued Saturday morning. Zucchini, summer squash, heirloom tomatoes, garlic, onions, (goat) feta and basil were purchased. Instead of making my own pizza dough, I stopped at a local pizza joint and bought some of their dough. I prefer to do this instead of buying store-bought. Of course, you could always make your own, but I decided to save time, so I could make dessert.

Onions were carmelized. A batch of tomato sauce and walnut pesto were made. Zucchini and mushrooms were thinly sliced. Mozzarella was grated. Brussel sprouts were cooked. Toppings were placed in bowls. Friends started pouring in. Pizzas were assembled. Cold beer was served.

ROASTED TOMATO SAUCE

4 large tomatoes, quartered 1 large onion, quartered 10 garlic cloves 1/4 c olive oil 1 tbsp sea salt 1/2 tbsp oregano cracked pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 350. Put ingredients in a large bowl. Drizzle olive oil over, and sprinkle with sea salt, oregano and black pepper. Roast for 45 minutes. Remove from heat and blend all ingredients well. Make sure to pour in leftover juice from the pan.

WALNUT PESTO

1/4 c walnuts, chopped 1 big bunch of basil juice of 2 lemons 1/4 c walnut oil 2 garlic cloves, minced 4 tbsp parmesan (optional) sea salt cracked peper

Blend walnuts, basil, lemon juice, garlic, parmesan, salt, and pepper. Then add oil and pulse a few more times. If too thick, thin with more oil.

A SUMMER SOIREE

My favorite walnut oil! Excellent in pesto, bean salads and vinaigrettes.

BLUEBERRY-CHERRY GALETTE

INGREDIENTS

1 c organic all-purpose flour* 6 tbsp organic butter 1 tbsp natural sugar 1 tbsp sea salt 1/2 c ice water

1 c blueberries 1/2 c cherries, pitted 2 tbsp coconut oil, melted 1/4 c honey 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp nutmeg 1 tbsp lemon juice, freshly squeezed

Make the dough first. Pour flour into large bowl. Add the butter tablespoon by tablespoon—mixing with your fingers —until it re-sembles a coarse mixture. Add the sugar and sea salt. Then add the water little-by-little as you work it into the dough. Roll the dough into a ball, cover with clear wrap, and refrigerate for about an hour.

30 minutes later, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Mix the berries, coconut oil, honey, cinnamon and lemon together while the dough is in the refrigerator.

After an hour has passed, remove the dough from the fridge and put onto a floured work surface. Massage with your hands as it will warm the dough, making it easier to work with. Grab a rolling pin and roll the dough out. It’s really up to you how thick you want the crust to be. I like mine anywhere from 1/8 to 1/4 in. thick.

Now place the filling in the middle and spread out. But remember to leave about an inch or so free from the edge. You will then pick up the edges and roll over the filling, forming a rustic, open tart. Stick in the oven for about thirty minutes. Check on it at 15 minutes. You want the crust to brown lightly.

Remove from heat and let cool before serving. Excellent served with homemade ice cream.

Makes about an 8 inch galette that serves about six people. *You could replace half a cup of all purpose flour with spelt or whole wheat flour, if you’d like.

Sisters, Flannery and Katherine Good, are the marvelous mixol-ogy mavens behind “Fashionably Bombed,” a website dedicated to social cocktailing and high proof panache. Their cocktail recipes are oozing with originality and their conviviality is beyond conta-gious! Because of our shared love of vivacious, sparkly living, we simply could not resist asking them to concoct a signature Society Social cocktail in honor of our launch. It’s devilishly exotic, peachy keen, and topped off with champers because the girls know us all too well! You’ll be running back to your bar cart before you can say “Cheers!”

INTRODUCING… “THE SOCIETY SPARKLER”

A WHITE PEACH & CARDAMOM CHAMPAGNE COCKTAIL

by Fashionably Bombed

½ large white peach (roughly chopped) 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1½ tablespoons sugar 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom Champagne Edible gold glitter stars

In a food processor add peach, lemon juice, sugar and cardamom. Blend until smooth. Rim each glass with lemon wedge and then dip into a plate of glitter stars. Next carefully add 2 tablespoons of mixture to each glass and top with champagne. Pour champagne in slowly as not to disturb the beautiful rim! Cheers!”
