are already participating in Sports, Mathematics and Music lessons in Class 4. They seem to be enjoying these, in particular Mathematics. These students were also able to enjoy both the class trip with Classes 4 and 5 to Sandai, and the Swimming Gala that took place in these eventful weeks. After all these intensive and shared experiences, the students are no longer the “new ones” Nonetheless once more: Welcome and all the best in our school. (R. v. Dessauer) School Party (29.1.) "Our school - many worlds" ... a successful School Party marks the end of the first semester

The entire school, Kindergarten included, celebrated a very colourful and fun-filled party on Saturday the 29

th

of January on the school grounds. From early afternoon to late evening, parents and students participated in the numerous activities on offer, ranging from popping balloons with darts, knocking over stacks of tins, and racing in the ever popular egg and spoon race! Parents even had their hair coloured brightly, or plaited; students ate popcorn, roasted peanuts, made waffles and enjoyed cakes from the Kindergarten stand. The tombola was perhaps the most exciting event of the party, with some big prizes, and several smaller ones too (many thanks to all the private and company donors!). All proceeds from the afternoon will go either directly towards to the class involved in the respective activity, or towards the new construction of the Kindergarten. Furthermore the School Bard successfully "sold" glass blocks for the new Kindergarten, the proceeds of which will go towards getting solar panels for the Kindergarten office, allowing us to take full advantage of the hot Kenyan

sun! As evening fell, parents and students alike retreated to the tents, to relax and let the evening fade away with a delicious "World-Buffet", generously provided by the chefs in our parent body! A total of Ksh 283,107/= was collected, which will help us to provide the new Kindergaretn with attractive equipment. A further Ksh 41,000/= was added to the kitty with proceeds from the Tigoni concert. (Fotos: C. Niehaus, C. Papathanasiou)

Model United Nations (7. – 11.2.) EAMUN (East African Model United Nations) took place from the 7th to the 11th of February 2011. Not only students from Kenyan schools participated in the programme, but also students from Malawi, Rwanda etc. and in fact one school came all the way from Sweden to participate in the programme. EAMUN takes place annually at the UN compound in Nairobi, where young people debate and vote based on UN rules and regulations. Students from Classes 9 and 10 represented the German School Nairobi. Each school was given countries they had to represent before the conference began.

Students then spent months researching their respective countries, and had to write resolutions for these countries. The resolutions were then discussed and debated, and “delegates” finally voted upon to whether to pass or fail the resolution. Exactly as it is in the United Nations, the resolutions were debated in 4 committees, i.e. Human Rights, Politics, Economics and Ecology. The German School Nairobi represented Egypt in the Human Rights Committee (resolution on eradicating remnants of war), Jamaica in the Ecology Committee (resolution on reducing the impact of hurricane

disasters) and Belgium in the Economic Committee (resolution on introduction of the Tobin Tax to help prevent future financial crises.) 2 out of the 3 resolutions were passed by the delegates from the other schools. This is very impressive, as more than half of the total resolutions were failed! 2 students participated in the Special Summit, which involves cross-fire debates on controversial topics, such as mob justice, use of torture as means of interrogation in democratic nations etc. Representatives of Belgium were also required to present a case against Senegal in the International Court of Justice, regarding the extradition of a former Chadian President to Belgium. The 2 delegates from Belgium convincingly debated their case, and won with a unanimous vote. All in all, considering we were participating for only the second time, students of the German School Nairobi gave an excellent account of themselves, and we look forward to more success next year! EAMUN Participants Class Trips (7. – 11.2.) Every second year, all the students of the German School Nairobi go away on class trips. Even children from the Primary School are included here, with children from Class 1 going away for 1 night, children from Class 2 for 2 nights, and children from Class 3 for 3 nights. Class 3 Trip to Elsamere I have just returned from a class trip. It was nice there. On the first day, we did a nature walk. On the next day, we went to Hell’s Gate. After that, in the afternoon, we watched a film on the lioness, “Elsa”. After this day we went for a boat ride in 2 boats on Lake Naivasha, to look for hippos. Then we painted. (Manja B.)

Swimming Gala (18.2.) The annual Swimming Gala took place on Friday the 18th of February. All students of Classes 1 - 9 participated in the Gala, and class 10 was responsible for the organization of the event. The highlights of the Gala were,as always, the class relays and the relay between the students, teachers, parents and staff. The staff team took part for the second year, but unfortunately, despite an obviously improved performance, still took the fourth place! In the break, the girls of the "Tanz-alarm" club performed a dance under the guidance of Ms. Mink, proving that it is also possible to move well on dry land!

„Abitur” examinations (21.-25.2.) Abitur examinations 2011 – Impressions from the first day of examinations Some come in a suit, commensurate to the importance of the day, others in track pants, comfort being more important to them… 5 hours of focused work lie ahead of the 11 students doing their Abitur examinations in the academic year 2010 / 2011. After a period of intensive preparation behind them, let’s just say some are more prepared for the big day than others. With dictionaries on the tables, and a choice of 2 topics, the compulsory German examination begins… On Wednesday, English or one of the social science subjects (History or Geography) will be examined. Friday is devoted to Mathematics or Biology. The “free” days in between will be exploited to the fullest to throw in some last minute revision. Hopefully the short term memory will kick in! A healthy mind needs a healthy body, and perhaps it is just as well, that the room where these students trained their bodies is now being used to test their minds – the small gymnastics room! The mirrors have been covered with calming green mats, and a quick look outside the window can only be calming: green plants, blossoming flowers… Even the sheep dog has been quiet in celebrating this important day! Concentration Passages from the texts are colourfully highlighted, comments made in the margins, students feverishly look for rhetorical methods, and try to remember the correct order of steps of analysis. First drafts of the answers are finally coming through. In between, they take a quick drink. On the benches outside the room, water, tea, coffee, and other caffeine–rich drinks have been made available. Snacks from home, an array of fruits, and “calorie bombs” from the house of Mama Berger give them much needed energy. And should this not be enough, students of Class 11 have put together an “Emergency buffet”, which is traditional of course, but also a sign of solidarity with the examination candidates. It will all be devoured at 1.25.p.m. Yes, 1.25 p.m. is the official end of the examination time, time for the tension to dissolve into simple chitchat. A different kind of revelry will take place at the same time on Friday… best of luck to all the candidates! (G. Fogt) Class 9 wins in a Federal Competition This year, one of the classes of the German School Nairobi participated for the first time in a student competition in political education, - and indeed with great success. With their contribution to the topic, “Poor despite employment”, the students of Class 9 will each receive a CD-Rom as an award. This student competition, which falls under the patronage of the German President, has been carried out in Germany for the last 40 years by the Federal Agency for Civic Education. The aim is to sensitize students to current affairs as part of their everyday learning. With a very small majority, students of Class 9 decided to participate in this competition at the beginning of the academic year. The students chose the topic “poor despite employment” from a choice of 6 topics. It made perfect sense given the current scenario in Kenya. The work for this project was done in the Social Studies lessons. Students of Class 9 worked in small groups on themes related to the main topic, ranging from the poverty situation in Kenya and in Germany, to minimum salary scales. The students interviewed “everyday” Kenyans – a petrol station attendant, a shoe shiner, a maize seller and an “askari” about their work situations. They also gathered information on poverty in Kenya by interviewing Kristian Rosbach, formerly employed by the GTZ in Nairobi. The interview focused on minimum salary scales as a means of fighting poverty. After all this hard work, an 8-paged document (with pictures) was produced by the students and sent to Germany. From the 3046 such documents received by the organizers, the production of Class 9 students was classified as one of the best 425. Obviously this two month project was not every student’s cup of tea – however, the general consensus after the project was, that it was very instructive in many ways (in terms of content of course, but also in terms of group work, organization and planning), and should definitely be carried out again.(K. Häggmark)

3. A England, Scotland B Scotland, Wales, England C England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland

Did you know the answers? These are only 2 of the 20 questions that the students had to answer for the National Geographic Knowledge Competition. Recently this competition, which takes place annually in February, has established itself well in more or less all German schools. Last year 240,000 students took part in this competition, from which 5,000 were from the 52 German Schools Abroad. Questions are based on geographical general knowledge, and not on the syllabus of a specific German province. At the German School Nairobi, the initial winners of each class (Classes 5 – 10) were ascertained by means of a questionnaire. The winners were: Class 5: Otto Weber Class 6: Yusuf Omer Class 7: Erik Martin-Lorz Class 8: Niklas Häggmark Class 9: Tabita Stegen Class 10: Lucas Alcamo Well done! These 6 class winners then had to go through another round of questions, in order to ascertain the overall winner of the German School Nairobi. Everyone tried well on the day, yet there can only be one winner, who was: Erik Martin-Lorz from Class 7. Very well done Erik! Erik will now participate with others in the German Schools Abroad Competition in the first week of March. He will compete against some 50 other students from German Schools Abroad. The winner of this round will be able to participate at provincial level against the 16 other provincial candidates, as a representative of the “17

th province” (German Schools Abroad). The competition will take place in

Hamburg on the 21st of May 2011. Flights for the candidate and one accompanying adult will be paid

for by the Central Agency for German Schools Abroad. We wish Erik all the best.

Kindergarten Children as first-aiders! First-aid course in the Kindergarten. For the first-aid course in the Kindergarten, children were taught the basics of first-aid through play. The aim is not only for the children to have fun learning, but also to help chase away any fears they may have of hospitals, rescue services and visits to the doctors. In this case children of Kindergarten age (5 and above) were sensitized to the concept of first aid. Children have through regular training the possibility, to take accept first-aid as a matter of course. Children learn certain measures, such as the correct recovery position, much faster than adults, and carry out the exercises without any reservations. This will make them more mature and decisive first aiders later. Using child-appropriate methods, the children learnt the following:

• To know their own bodies.

• Correct behavior in an emergency

• First aid tips on: cuts, burns, insect bites and correct behavior with animals

• Use of elastoplasts

• Correct application of a bandage

• The recovery position As a special treat, the children were shown a first-aid kit, and were even allowed to try out the harmless objects, such as the stethoscope. At the end of the course, each child received a certificate. (Ron Kirsch – School Nurse)

There is no entry fee to this reading. Snacks and drinks will be available. Also on the programme of the resource centre is a further training event, aimed at German teachers in East Africa, as part of the Partner Schools Initiative (Schools: partners of the future) from the 10

th to

the 12th of March. Furthermore, we will be holding an in-school training on the theme of “Intercultural

Competence”, in which all teachers will participate (on the 11th

and 18th of May). A further 3 day

News from the Parents’ Sub-Committee School party and internal differentiation in lessons We had a great start into the year 2011 when we celebrated the German School Nairobi school party at the end of January. It was wonderful that we, as the Parents’ Sub-Committee, were able to contribute to this successful event. We would like to thank the many parents who participated by helping out with the stands of “their” classes, by donating gifts for various raffles, by contributing to the dinner buffet or in some other way. It was a great experience to see how so many members of the school community collaborated and celebrated together. Last but not least, the party supported the construction of the new kindergarten financially and, thereby, participated in an investment into the future of our school as a whole. One of the most important issues the Parents’ Sub-Committee has been concerned with in the preceding months and that will be in our focus for some time to come is that of internal differentiation in class. Not all of our children share identical strengths and weaknesses, some require additional support and explicit positive encouragement in some areas where others will take advantage of extra challenges to fully realise their potential. Our school should work towards providing optimal learning environments for all students rather than the average students only. The BLI (Inspection by German educational authorities) evaluation report, that has been accessible for discussion for some time now, shows that the German School Nairobi still needs to undertake additional efforts to realise this goal. Furthermore, we know from discussions with individual parents that there is a need to address this problem. As parents and parents’ representatives, we can and will put forward our observations and suggestions in the various relevant school committees such as the board and the steering committee as well as in our interactions with the school management. And, as always, we would like to encourage all parents to communicate their ideas, suggestions and also grievances to us as directly as possible so we can do our job as representatives effectively. Other than this, there are quite a number of school activities parents are welcome to contribute to. This includes, for instance, the cultural group that deals with establishing relationships between the German School Nairobi and its intercultural environment (contact person: Barbara Alcamo). Furthermore, there are many opportunities to help out and contribute in each of our classes. As your parents’ representatives, we are always open for your input. So talk to us directly whenever we see each other, give us a call or send us an e-mail. With best regards and on behalf of the Parents’ Sub-Committee (M. Hittmeyer and T. Weber)

News from the School Board Let’s go solar…. and more At the beginning of the New Year, members of the School Board reflect upon a whole series of initiatives and activities that took place, yet are fully aware that a lot of work lies ahead of us too. By providing solar energy in the new construction of the Kindergarten, we are trying to use the opportunity to move the German School Nairobi in a more environmentally friendly, eco-friendly and sustainable direction. We would thus also like to sensitise our children to the use of solar, and thus renewable energy sources. Many parents, ex-students and friends of the German School Nairobi supported our idea of solar energy at the stall we had for the School Party. All sponsors will be named at the entrance of the new Kindergarten in a glass wall created by Kitengela Glass / Nani Croze. Additionally, we are attempting to form a private public partnership (ppp) with the German Solar companies, with the GIZ and with a Kenyan company, through which we will finance the most part of our solar energy project. We, as a school, will provide the German companies with a platform on which they can display their technology in Kenya. These firms will invest in solar panels and the GIZ will support all projects related to the “environmental education” of our children, and will also serve the German companies by being a visible feature of German technology in Kenya. We will be delighted if we can make this plan a reality. You can find more information on this project on: www.dsnairobi.de/Intranet/Kindergatenprojekt. The financing of the Kindergarten construction has now been secured through loans from members of German School Society, so we no longer need to borrow anything from the banks. A huge thank you, once again, to all those who supported us. The first phase of the new construction is nearly finished. We want to move in the first week of March, and promptly begin the second phase, so that the new Kindergarten will be ready in the summer holidays.

And to conclude, a request… We would like to invite all members of the School Society to think about working with us on the School Board, as 2 members are leaving Kenya at the end of the academic year. As we have filled only 7 of the 8 places available on the Board at the moment, we are looking for 3 new members, who wish to be actively involved in the school. The School Board would be just the right place for that! Karibu!

News from our Nurse Headaches Tension headaches and migraines are often automatically associated with stressed-out managers or with middle aged women. Far from it: it is estimated that 5% of all children suffer from migraines. Before puberty, both boys and girls are affected in equal measure, and after puberty more girls are affected than boys. A migraine headache mostly attacks children for the first time when they are of Primary School age, but there have also been cases of younger children being affected. Tension headaches occur more frequently, and mostly plague school children. We have all experienced headaches at some point or another due to a cold, a sinus infection, a concussion, through sun stroke or even due to a lack of fluid intake. In these cases the trigger is obvious. Rarely are headaches signs of a serious illness such as meningitis or brain tumours. In fact, to reassure you: headaches as a consequence of brain tumours are very rare in children. However, if a child complains about severe headache a few weeks after a concussion, it is best to have it looked at by a doctor. But the common thing about all these types of headaches is that there is another illness causing it, which can be diagnosed by a doctor, or even by the parent, dependent on what the accompanying symptoms are. The child with a tension headache or a migraine is therefore not really sick, even if his / her whole body reacts due to a migraine headache, or even when the trigger is stress, other worries or bad eyesight. In such cases, as soon as the attack is over, your child will behave normally again. The reasons for headaches are not exactly known even today, though researchers seem to think certain people are simply pre-disposed to them. . It has also been established that with tension headaches, the head muscles are tense, but these headaches are linked to mental tension too. This explains why stressed school children offer suffer from headaches, especially after a long day at school. Strained eyes due to short-sightedness or due to poorly lit classrooms can also cause such tension. Both types of headaches may occur in older girls during their menstrual period. Sleep is the most effective “medicine” for headaches, especially for younger children with migraine headaches. If your child has a headache, the best thing to do is to allow him / her to rest in a quiet, darkened room. A child with a migraine headache often does not want to eat or drink. To keep nausea at bay, do not force him / her to do so. Many children find cold flannels on the part of the head that hurts the most very soothing. Other children prefer warm or even hot flannels. A compress containing curd or onion put on the child’s neck can help to reduce cramps and soothe the pain. It is also advisable to see an ophthalmologist to rule out any eye sight related problems. Also pay attention to what your child eats, as chocolate, flavor enhancers, caffeine or even some types of cheeses can cause headaches in children who may be allergic to these.(R. Kirsch)
