School News From the Principal Remember to Say “I Love You”
FEBRUARY 2011
truly eternal and has no sense of time or
space or a gap too wide to close.
This February, please attach your
“live and love in the moment” letter of
heartfelt appreciation for all the Valentines
on your list. You don’t have to write a dos-
sier, but do put some heart into it. Think
about the people in your life that really
make your world a brighter place and are
there for you when you need them. Give
them the gift of “thanks”; it means so much
now and always. I believe that every time
we reach out in an act of love, however
small, it has an eternal impact on this
planet. Our individual ripple effect can
spread far and wide, and like a river, can
sweep others right into our positive cur-
rent. ~Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff by Kris Carl-
son
Remember you can never say “I love you” to often to your children.
Shane Alexander, Principal
I hope everyone is ready for some
warmer Spring weather. Brrrr, We seem to
be in a deep freeze as January wanes into
February.
It seems as though everyone has
“Love” on his or her mind in February. Gen-
erally, those who have found it in partnership
will be cleverly thinking of how to celebrate
with their Valentine. In this moment, though,
let’s think about how we can celebrate the
presence of Love whether it is for a special
Valentine or not.
Love is that indescribable, truly palpa-
ble feeling of joy that almost sometimes hurts
it feels so good. It can happen with our chil-
dren, parents, neighbors, teachers, co-
workers, and friends. It can even happen
when we look into the eyes of a complete
stranger. Eventually, maybe it will happen
globally? Can we picture all of us as mem-
bers of humanity in love? Yes, that would
truly hurt it would feel so good.
Love is high risk and high reward. To
love completely, we have to risk losing love,
and in so doing; we will experience a height-
ened sense of our feelings in life. And, in our
sorrow, there can be an incredible opening
that allows our hearts to expand to create
more space for Love. I can say that Love is

registering. We would appreciate it if you notify all par-
ents who have kindergarten age children of these impor-
tant upcoming dates.
Pre-school is offered at Lincoln, Jefferson and Buffalo
Elementary Schools. You may stop by these schools to
learn more about the pre-school program and see how
children qualify.

Effective July 1, 2011 all children in school must have a second
varicella (chickenpox) shot unless they have had the disease.
If your child has not had a second shot, please take care of this and
bring the record to the school as soon as possible. We need all re-
cords before school is out on May 18th to ensure that there will be
no problems when school starts again in August. Thank You

Jump Rope for Heart
January 26th marked the 100th day of our school year. Staff and
students celebrated the day with a variety of activities.
Jump Rope for Heart is fast approaching. The event will be held on February 17th during the student’s regular PE time. Jump Rope for Heart is used to help the American Heart Associa-tion raise funds to fight heart disease. It also supports the development of educational materi-als and teaches our students the importance of healthy lifestyle. This event gives students the opportunity to perform community service as they raise funds for the American Heart Associa-tion.
Students in grades 1—5 will bring home envelopes the week of February 7th. Family and friends are welcome to support your child’s participation through contributions. However, we ask that students not go door-to-door or ask strangers for donations. Checks should be made payable to the American Heart Association. Those turning in an envelope will be placed in a drawing and be eligible for prizes. We look forward to your child’s participation in this very important event.

you decide to earn."
Billy blew his spelling test.
When his mother discovered
the gory grade, she got a
slightly sad look on her face
- not the crazed enraged one
Billy hoped for. Then she
asked him how he felt about
HIS grade.
"I don't know. Not good, I
guess."
Billy's attempt to manipulate
and punish Mom had failed.
He tried his best to hook her
into his problems, but she
dodged the bullet with a nice
dose of empathy.
Wise parents remember that
the more upset they get over
their children's grades, the
less likely that their kids will
begin to get better ones. In
our DVD, Hope for Under-
achieving Kids, my father
and I discuss a step-by-step
plan for helping kids like
Billy learn to reward them-
selves with good grades, in-
stead of punishing their par-
ents with bad ones.
Billy's mother had commit-
ted the unthinkable sin of
saying "no" to his request
for a slingshot. Shortly after
his pleading and whining
failed, Billy switched to a
new tactic.
It was time to study his
spelling words and he re-
fused. "I'm not studying! I
don't care. I hope I get an F.
I hope I get all F's forever!"
Mom was tempted to argue,
but she took care of herself.
In the process, she reminded
herself that his grades are
his grades…not hers:
Whose problem is this?
HIS. What will probably
happen if he doesn't study?
He may do poorly on HIS
test tomorrow.
Instead of fighting, she em-
pathized, "Sounds like
you're upset," and walked
into the kitchen.
Before school the next
morning, her beloved Billy
asked her, "Are you ready
for some F's?" Mom just
smiled and answered, "I'll
love you whatever grades
