youth leadership group MY LIFE(Magellan Youth Leaders InspiringFuture Empowerment) is magnifyingyouth voice in Pennsylvania, to createsystem change while reducing stigma,creating awareness, and promotingrecovery and resiliency.

Challenges that needed addressing

There is a lack of youth voice to develop and inform systems, programs, and services for youth and young adults.

Youth lack opportunities to develop leadership skills, social skills and positive social supports.

There is stigma for youth who have experience with mental health, substance abuse and/or foster care issues. Youth are needed to share their experiences to help reduce the stigma and provide inspiration to other youth, family members, professionals and stakeholders.

Why youth involvement?

Involving youth in the systems that serve them can improve outcomes, helping them:

− Develop relationships− Acquire new skills− Build self‐confidence− Instill positive social supports− Cultivate leadership skills

The value of youth involvement in mental health systems has been acknowledged and promoted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)In 2002, SAMHSA began requiring the systems of care grant communities to hire youth coordinators and develop opportunities for youth involvement throughout their systems (Gyamfi, Keens‐Douglas, & Medin, 2007). 

What is MY LIFE?

• MY LIFE consists of youth between the ages of 13 and 23 who have experience with mental health, substance abuse, juvenile justice and foster care‐related issues. Youth who have a family member or friend experiencing these challenges are also encouraged to participate. MY LIFE began in Arizona in 2008. Since then, MY LIFE youth have helped establish nine groups in Louisiana, five groups in Pennsylvania, two groups in Wyoming and three in Florida.

The first MY LIFE meeting was held March 27, 2008 in Phoenix, Arizona.

MY LIFE meetings

• Regular MY LIFE youth meetings are the foundation of MY LIFE. These meetings provide an opportunity for youth to come together and create a community of support, plan activities and initiatives, practice social skills, and learn about a variety of topics from 

guest presenters.

MY LIFE mission and objectives

The MY LIFE model is designed to give youth a voice and an active role in planning and implementing youth and young adult system of care transformations, including behavioral health, child welfare and juvenile justice, to accomplish the following objectives: 

To help MY LIFE members develop leadership skills, social skills and positive social supports

To help MY LIFE members learn, utilize and teach advocacy skills to help facilitate positive change and become leaders in the community

To provide opportunities for MY LIFE members to share their experience to provide hope and inspiration to other youth and families in similar circumstances

To inspire creativity and provide opportunities for members to practice and share current talents and develop new ones 

To reduce stigma associated with mental health, substance abuse and/or foster care issues by producing youth‐led community events

To outreach to youth in the community who are in similar circumstance by doing workshops and presentations in treatment centers, detention facilities, schools etc.

To effect positive change in the systems that serve youth

Conduct workshops and presentations for professionals to educate them about the importance of youth involvement and how they can start similar youth programs

Youth Leadership Activities from Pennsylvania MY LIFE 

• Bullying Campaign ‐ Youth were presented with ways to use healthy coping skills whenexperiencing bullying on social media. MY LIFE Youth were provided with Bullyingtoolkits to help educate youth and families attending events at the YMCA. Youth alsodistributed surveys to young people about their buying experiences; so, thisinformation can be shared with County leadership. MY LIFE co‐presented to DelawareCounty Council, to proclaim October Bullying Prevention Month.

• Community Service Activities ‐ MY LIFE youth attended a Senior Center, to serve lunchto the seniors, while other youth did arts and crafts with the seniors. Another MY LIFEgroup volunteered at a Food Bank, to help them clean and organize their storage area.We find it’s important for youth to learn how to serve their communities, in order tofurther their leadership skills.

Youth Leadership Activities from Pennsylvania MY LIFE 

• MY LIFE PLAY ‐ a group of MY LIFE youth developed skits on topics that were challenging for them, so they could present to the community, in order to increase awareness of issues youth face. 

• MY LIFE youth have participated in YOUTH Focus Groups on topics such as grant applications, trauma, and survey development to inform County initiatives related to Transition Age Youth. 

• MY LIFE youth participate in System of Care activities and leadership boards.

• MY LIFE youth participate in County Transition‐Age Youth and Young Adult Collaborative workgroups, to provide feedback to the members about services and supports.

Youth Outreach to the Community 

• Presentations and Workshops 

• MY LIFE youth have made more than 40 local and national presentations, to an audience of more than 5,000 people. Presentations include personal stories, video highlights, performances and outcomes related to MY LIFE’s incredible accomplishments. These presentations and workshops take place at regional and national conferences, schools, detention centers, government buildings, Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs and other locations.

MY LIFE and the Media 

• MY LIFE utilizes all forms of media to create awareness and reduce stigma. MY LIFE activities have received TV news coverage on Fox, ABC, CBS and NBC affiliates and have been featured on numerous major radio stations. In addition, the “This is MY LIFE” video has been viewed nationally by thousands. 

• Social Media is key to reaching out to youth, and MY LIFE has a very active Facebook page that reaches a wide audience.

MY LIFE youth and community partners have planned and produced 20 MY Fest events that have entertained and educated over 50,000 attendees.

MY Fest is a FREE community event planned and held to raise awareness about mental health, substance abuse and foster care‐related issues facing youth and young adults.

MY Fest features live music, performances, art, games and a variety of youth and family‐based organizations offering inspiration, resources and services for youth and families.

MY LIFE Youth Leadership Day

Youth Leadership Day is geared towards helping youth experience how their voice has an impact on the world around them.  It is also an opportunity to further educate the youth about the system, policies, and recovery.

Youth Day at the Capitol provided an opportunity for the group to raise awareness about issues affecting youth with PA state officials. It gave MY LIFE a unique chance to meet face‐to‐face with state legislators and government officials, to share their concerns and ideas about the issues they feel most affect youth. Youth had the opportunity to meet with local legislators in Harrisburg to express what they feel youth need from the system.

To provide stories of Recovery through speakers from Minding Your Mind, Young People in Recovery, NAMI, and Kevin Hines to instill hope.

To inspire new ways of viewing the world through team building programs such as Challenge Day and Barn Nature Center that challenge the ways we currently interact with others.

To honor youth leaders through awards, celebrations, and fun.

• An example from Arizona: Youth Peer Support

• At Magellan Governance Board meetings in Arizona, MY LIFE advocated for thedevelopment of peer services delivered by and for transition‐age youth. The MagellanGovernance Board listened to MY LIFE’s recommendations and took action. Magellanpartnered with Visions of Hope, a consumer‐run agency, to create a Transition‐Age PeerSupport Program. 20 youth have completed training and many are now employed as peersupport specialists serving the transition‐age youth population.
