The name MUMMY comes from MUMMYAH, the Arabic word for BITUMEN, a sort of tar used in modern roads. When the archeologists found the bodies they thought that the mummies were dipped in tar because they were so dark.

The Egyptian people made mummies because they believed that doing this, the person could keep on living in the next world.

The embalmers were the people who took the internal organs and then covered the body with a salt called NATRON. They worked at the embalmer’s workshop called Beautiful House.

First, they took out the internal organs such as the heart, lungs, kidneys and the brain and put them in special jars called CANOPIC JARS. Then, they covered the body all over with a salt called NATRON, to dry it out.

After several days, the insides were stuffed with linen, sawdust, natron and sweet-smelling herbs and spices.

Next, the body was wrapped tightly with bandages, putting lucky charms between the layers. They used a lot of bandages.

Finally, a priest came to say prayers. He wore a mask on his head to look like the jackal god Anubis, god of the dead.

The Egyptians believed that the heart was the center of intelligence and memory. If it was too heavy with sin, it was eaten by a monster called AMMIT. The soul that passed the test would go on to a happy afterlife.

Ancient Egyptians worshipped many gods and goddesses.

RA was the sun god. He was shown with the body of a man and the head of a falcon. They said that he had created the world. They believed Ra sailed everyday across the sky in a golden boat. At sunset, he returned to the underworld, which was a kingdom below the earth. Every morning, he rose again to sail once more across the sky, in a never ending cycle.

HORUS looked after the pharaoh. He was the son of Ra on earth.

ISIS was the goddess who took care of men. She created the first mummy.

OSIRIS was the god of death and rebirth. He was married to ISIS.

SETH was god of the desert and storms.

ANUBIS was the god of the dead.

THOTH was the god of wisdom and writing.

HATHOR the goddess of love. FinishBack
