The novel is the story of a traumatic time in the life of a recently orphanedfourteen-year-old boy named Ponyboy Curtis. He liveson the East Side, a member of the lower class and a gang of "greasers."

Quiet and dreamy, Ponyboy has conflicts with his older brother andguardian, Darrel, who keeps the family together. The greasers²whomPonyboy distinguishes from "hoods"²are the heroes of the tale. Setagainst them are the upper-class socials, or Socs, who enjoy drinking, driving nice cars, and beating up greasers. The circumstances of thissocial situation result in the death of three teens. The story explores thethemes of class conflict, affection, brotherly love, and coming of age in away that young people readily appreciate. This novel's portrayal of

disaffected youth has been criticized for its violent content, but it is nowregarded as a classic of juvenile literature. It can be considered one of thefirst examples of the "young adult" genre, and after its publicationliterature for teens gained a new realism, depth, and respect for itsaudience.

The Outsiders is one of the first novels written specifically for the young adult reader. Forty years after its

initial publication, teens are still reading and enjoying its real message of characters who live in less thanperfect social situations. This novel captures the attention of even the most reluctant readers and keeps themturning page after page.

There are many ways to incorporate reading, writing, electronic, collaborative, illustrative, and discussionactivities into the reading of The Outsiders. A few of these include poetry and other pieces of classicliterature, (Ponyboy is a fan of both of these) music, movies and movie posters, and webquests. These ideaswill be discussed in the following slides.

There are so many ways to utilize the ideas within this novel to keepstudents¶ interest as they read. Here are some suggestions.

1. Music clips ± Ponyboy (as narrator) mentions popular sixties performers like Elvisand The Beatles as favorites of the teens where he lives. Introduce students tothese musicians by playing a little Hound Dog, Jailhouse Rock, Help!, A Hard Day¶s Night, or whatever your favorites might be as they come into class. Thenspend a few minutes discussing how this music differs from what they listen totoday.

2. Movie clips ± Ponyboy also idolizes actor Paul Newman. Show students someshort movie clips from some of Newman¶s greatest films. Butch Cassidy and theSundance Kid and The Color of Money would be great choices. Discuss whyPonyboy would have idolized Newman.

3. Culture ± Display or project images of cultural items from the 1960s as discussedin the novel. Suggestions include madras shirts, Mustangs and Corvairs, anddrive-in movie theaters. Students could free write about these or they could simplybe great discussion generators.

Webquest No. 1

http://www.simsbury.k12.ct.us/uploaded/HJ_Content/Library_Media/Microsoft_Word_-_Outwebq_4_.pdf Not actually a true webquest by nature, this is actually more of apre-reading activity. However, I have included it here because it isalso a great resource for using the Internet to locate specific information.

The assignment includes a series of questions about several people, places, and other cultural events from the 1960s that today¶s readers may not be familiar with such as Elvis, TheBeatles, Paul Newman, and cars and clothing that were popular then. There are also specific websites listedfor searching for the information. This is a great warm-up activity before reading and can lead to interactivediscussion about many aspects of the novel. It can be an individual or collaborative activity.

Webquest No. 2

http://outsiders06.tripod.com/ This is more of a true webquest, complete with an introduction, process, tasks, and evaluations for students. This activity should be completed once the students have read most or all of the novel and arefamiliar with the characters. The webquest allows students to collaborate, yet there is an independentassignment as well, where students have to choose to represent one of the novel¶s characters in a finalpresentation. The webquest also gives the student groups a choice in their final projects ± always a goodidea.

M argaret M itchell¶s classic tale of love, betrayal, and civil war destruction of Scarlet O¶Hara¶s beloved Atlanta estate, Tara, isalso central to the plot of The Outsiders. This would be theperfect opportunity to introduce students to this wonderfulpiece of classic literature and discuss its connections to their own lives as Georgia residents. This could be done through abooktalk, or even better as an addition to their history teacher¶sunit on the civil war. The film adaptation is also a possibleclassroom resource but only in small increments due to itslength.

The Robert Frost poem below becomes afavorite of best friends Ponyboy and Johnnyin The Outsiders. It is meaningful for thembecause of the message it holds and how thatmessage relates to their lives.

Nothing Gold Can StayNature¶s first green is gold,

Her hardest hue to hold.Her early leaf¶s a flower;

But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf.

So Eden sank to grief,So dawn goes down to day.

Nothing gold can stay.

Students will analyze this poem and write abrief summary of its message. Finally, they willexplain its importance to Ponyboy and Johnny.Next, students will compose their own acrosticpoem about one of the novel¶s characters. Thiscan be adapted to include any elements thatthe teacher wants to include.

This is an activity/assignment thatI have used with other novels and thatthe students have enjoyed.Upon completion of the reading of thenovel, students willcomplete an alphabet book of

characteristics of the novel. This can be in the form of a power pointpresentation, word

document, or made-from-scratch booklet.Students will choose one element from thenovel to represent

each letter of the alphabet, describe it as itrelates to the novel, and provide a picture, clip art, or illustrationthat represents

each element. These can be done individuallyor collaboratively

and presented to the class upon completion.

W hen students have been attentive duringthe reading process and have completed allother required assignments that go alongwith a novel unit, they really enjoy viewingfilm adaptations of the novels they read. Thisis perfectly acceptable as long as the filmsenhance the students¶ understanding of thereading and remain true to the concepts thatthe teacher is trying to teach. Francis FordCoppola¶s adaptation of The Outsiders doesthose things while remaining true to thebook¶s plot. It is an excellent classroomresource.
