“MULTI-CRITERIA DECISION MAKING (MCDM)

TECHNIQUES AND APPLICATIONS”

In recent time the world has been threatened with the adverse impact of COVID 19. It is not about the number of deaths or infected cases only, but every sphere of social life and economic activities are affected. Slowly, as the storm is passing by, the world is moving towards a ‘new normal’. At this point in time, it is quite imperative to understand the norms of the ‘new normal’. From business point of view, experts (Deloitte) believe that data-driven decision-making and agile action would be the key to success. Since, this pandemic has changed the modus operandi from physical to virtual for a majority number of business operations; it has become even more complex to take prudent and timely decision. Further, under extreme volatile situations, the cost of wrong decisions is now enormously high. On the other side, in order to cope up with the financial constraints, in coming phase the organizations will put more emphasis on low cost, easy to use and fast decision-support system. Therefore, in the post-COVID 19 phase organization’s success will be dependent on both individual intelligence (at down the level) and group intelligence (collective opinions) for decision-making.

Needless to mention, the emphasis in ‘new normal’ will be more given on

• building analytical abilities and • fast and effective decision-making without incurring much cost for implementing decision support systems or procuring proprietary

software.

In this regard, Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) or Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA)

• helps the decision-makers to balance conflicting objectives for selecting the best course of action among the available alternatives in a given situation.

• provides an easy to implement and fast decision support system that complements the cost-benefit analysis.

For example, an entrepreneur can evaluate the feasibility of various alternate courses of action with the help of MCDM frameworks without incurring additional cost. MCDM techniques are widely popular and are being extensively used in various decision-making scenarios (with varying level of complexity) involving a single decision-maker or a group of opinion-makers. Various application areas include

• choice of product while using e-commerce platform like Amazon or Flipkart• selection of distribution centres • facility location planning• vendor selection• personnel selection for recruitment• employee and customer satisfaction survey• deciding on promotional mix• investment decision-making • tourists’ considerations for destination planning• employee performance management• evaluation of product performances• organizational performance assessment• risk assessment for insurers• evaluation of critical care requirements in healthcare

and the list continues

In fact, MCDM is applicable to the problem that a store-keeper or local shop owner is facing and equally applicable in strategic decision-making for a large organization. MCDM provides a low-cost and easy to operate platform to solving trivial as well as complex scenarios with full information and/or imprecise information. For obvious reason, it is an integral part of business intelligence (BI) which analyzes potential decisions, the interactions between decisions, the influences that bear upon these decisions and the bearing all of the above has on an outcome to ultimately prescribe the best course of action for a given situation. For its wide applicability, MCDM has drawn significant attention of the academic fraternity also. It is a sub-discipline of Operations Research which enables the decision-makers to combine both cognitive and normative dimensions while taking a rational step.

The above-mentioned facts have motivated to introduce this introductory level course on MCDM. After attending this course, the participants shall

• Be conversant with MCDM techniques and their applications• Develop an ability to analyze complex decision making problems• Build a skill to promote cost vs. benefit analyses• Be able to provide better decision justification
