Church of St. Thérèse, Mount Merrion W e all need patience waiting. Waiting in a queue in the shops, waiting for the traffic in front to move, for exam or medical test results, for understanding from a loved one, for self-acceptance, or indeed simply for guests to arrive. The Old Testament people had no choice but to wait. They believed that the Anointed One that God would send, the Messiah, would come before many of them had died. But that was not the case. Advent is a time of waiting, celebrating an event that has already happened, and anticipating an event yet to happen. The Messiah, Jesus, has already walked on this earth. Bound initially by culture and place his liberating message is for all the world. He knows what it’s like to live on the earth with daily routine, unexpected events, and times of celebration and loss. Into these events in his own time and in ours he brought/brings inclusivity, mercy, peace and love. In the future, he has promised to come again and this time take us home asking us not to be afraid. We want our parish to also be a place of inclusivity, mercy, peace and love. And that is ultimately down to all of us in how we seek to imbue these values and truly live them. Let our waiting this Advent be active and real. And then may we all have very happy and blessed Christmas. And ourAdvent Week of Guided Prayer forall three Parishes at the end ofNovember.

The next few months areimportant for all of us as wereflect in a discerning way on theprocess for our new ParishPastoral Council in May 2017.

No doubt, our new Website (andnew external Notice Board!) willkeep us updated on all Parishdevelopments.

Exciting times indeed for 2017!

Each of uswill have our own memories of Fr Conleth’stime among us and there will be anopportunity to wish him well formally in thenew year. In a spirit of thanksgiving for hisministry in Mount Merrion, we ask God’sblessing on him, his family and his work inthe years ahead.

Since the Parish News waspublished in Autumn 2016, thePPC, at its monthly meeting on

Mount Merrion Parish Pastoral Council 2014-2017

these should be kept to the end ofMass.

On 4th October the Parish PastoralCouncils of Clonskeagh, Kilmacud andMount Merrion met in the CommunityCentre to get to know one another andsee how best practices and resourcescould be shared. An example of thiswas the Lenten Programme held inKIlmacud. This involved five eveningsof discussion on Evangelli Gaudiumwhich was followed by a parish meetingin June 2016 facilitated by theArchdiocese.

The results of the Pilot Focus Groupwhich took place in Autumn 2015 (inMount Merrion) were outlined amongwhich was that there is a positivefeeling about the church and a worryabout administering services as priestsgrow older and retire.

The Archbishop has identifiedClonskeagh, Kilmacud and MountMerrion as “three parishes together”. It was agreed that a working group beformed to look at the possibility ofmore lay involvement in leadingservices where a priest may not beavailable to celebrate Mass.

Early in Spring 2017 the PPC will startthe process of seeking new membersto come forward for election in May 2017 to a new PPC.

The AGM took place on 20thSeptember and activities in the Parish, celebrating the 60th Anniversary of theChurch building, were outlined. Thework on the tapestry was displayed andit is hoped to have it on display earlynext year. During the AGM there was adiscussion on various matters ofinterest including the use of hymnsheets to encourage the congregationto join in the singing at all Masses.Parishioners also raised the topic ofeulogies at funerals and it was advised

Mount Merrion & Kilmacud Parishes –Christmas Carol Service

Kilmacud and Mount Merrion Parishes joined together onDecember 11th at 4pm for a Christmas Carol Service in theChurch of St Thérèse. Three choirs were involved - the

Kilmacud Parish Youth Choir (a new choir formed in April thisyear), the Mount Merrion Parish Senior Choir and the MountMerrion Children’s Choir.

All were in full voice alongside their wonderful musicians –especially the young guitarists! It was a lovely occasion for themany who attended the service.

Light refreshments offered afterwards by our Hospitality Group inthe Community Centre were much appreciated as the weather, although unseasonable warm, had turned a little damp as we leftthe Church.

The carol service included such seasonal classics as AdesteFideles, Joy to the World, Away in a Manger and Little Donkeyalongside a wonderful Christmas “mash-up” arranged by theyoung people in the Mount Merrion Children’s Choir. Gaudetewas sung honouring the day that was in it – the 3rd Sunday ofAdvent. Known as Gaudete or ‘rejoice’ Sunday, it is the day onwhich we celebrate our joy as we prepare for and anticipate thebirth of the Lord on Christmas Day and when He comes again. The rose-coloured or pink candle was also lit on the Advent wreathduring the service symbolising this joy.

The carols were interspersed with readings, poetry and prayer allof which combined to create a wonderful celebration of vibrancyand energy from the young and ‘not-so-young’ alike.

The Choir Directors, Aideen McCallum, Kevin O’Regan andSusanne O’Reilly along with organist Eilis Hannon andaccompanist Helen Prendergast and of course the choirs andmusicians should certainly take a bow!

The three mainpanels are almost completed and ParishGroups are currently coming up with motifs to represent their work forthe borders. Families in the parish brought lots of small buttons whichhave been incorporated into the overall design. The finished Hanging willbe unveiled on the wall beside St. Thérèse’s Shrine on Sunday February19th 2017 – the date the church was opened and blessed in 1956.

Is it harder to believe today than it was in 1956 whenthis Church was built? Is it harder for a youngperson, with all the drive and idealism and

generosity of a young person, to believe today? Are ourcatechesis and our Catholic educational structuresfailing, if they leave so many indifferent to God in theirlives? Is secular Ireland Godless, or simply shy aboutGod? Is faith individualistic and a purely private matteror is there a space for faith in building society?

Homily notes of Most Rev. Diarmuid Martin Archbishop of Dublin,Church of Saint Thérèse, Mount Merrion, 1st October 2016.

What happens when the overall impact of faith in God diminisheswithin a society? Where the overall presence of God in societydiminishes or becomes relativized, then society as a whole beginsto ask itself if God matters at all. If society goes about its businesswithout God really mattering, then the overall ethos of faith insociety changes and society becomes more and more secular.

I am not a fan of Mission Statements. Overall they are very blandand so politically correct that they may inspire but will never offendanyone.

So I was especially surprised and pleased looking at your parishwebsite to read your Mission Statement which goes right into thereal mission of the Church today:

“Secure in the belief that we are loved by God

to make love a reality in our homes, in our parish and beyond

in a spirit of prayer and service”.

A Mission Statement in general attempts to put into words whatwe are here to do. Your Mission Statement, however, begins withGod and what God does. Our God is a God who loves us. If webegin our understanding of society with the wrong God, then wewill never influence society in the right way.

We celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the opening of thisChurch on a hill in a very different world to that of 1956.Building a Church on a hill can be interpreted in differentways. It could be looked on as a watchtower to protect andeven to dominate. The Church on a hill will only take on itsreal significance when those who frequent the buildingauthentically witness to what the building is for. It is theplace where people encounter the mercy of God in such away as that it frees them to be apostles of mercy, “in theirhome in the parish and beyond, in a spirit of prayer andservice”.

Faith is not just aboutdoing things. Faith isnever just anintellectual exercise.Faith is not a responseto a catalogue of do’s,much less a catalogueof don’ts. Faith is afundamental attitudewhich involves theentire person in arelationship with God.

The Church on a hill will remain just a billboard with blandmessages if it fails to be an open-ended invitation to all togo up to something which takes us beyond ourselves, changing and clarifying the language and the attitudes ofour everyday.

Above all the building will be an invitation to prayer, the central focal point of where our humanity and ourreason are captured into something which goes beyondourselves and leads us into an encounter with the mercy

and the beauty of our God.

PARISH NEWSChurch of St. Thérèse, Mount Merrion

As we journey towards the end of this Year of Mercy, it is

good to remind ourselves that the God revealed by Jesus

is full of compassion, inclusion, forgiveness and

tolerance. Through the vision and ministry of

Jesus we can see ourselves as unique and

loved.

The writer Jean Vanier has said that, ‘the path

to love is paved with cobblestones of

forgiveness’. Forgiveness was freely given to people Jesus met

despite protests from others. In fact, many of those who were

gifted with forgiveness felt that they didn't deserve it! That can

be a challenge for most of us: accepting forgiveness and

understanding myself worthy of it.

As we gradually understand that forgiveness can change how we

see the world we surely will become more conscious of how we

treat, and respond to, others. Life can be challenging enough, but

more so, when others frustrate our path. Harsh judgement and hasty

condemnation are no part of Christianity. Instead each of us could be

humble in the face of another and seek to echo the words of Yeats; “Tread

softly because you tread on my dreams.”

PARISH NEWSChurch of St. Thérèse, Mount Merrion

As this year we celebrate sixty years since the opening of our

parish church, it gives us time to remember all those,

throughout the decades, who have contributed to the life

of the parish. It is a vibrant parish and this is due mainly to

countless volunteers who have given selfless hours of time to

maintain its beauty and vitality. It is great that we can say, with

confidence, that the effort of past generations has been

continued by present, and indeed, those who will form future

generations. A parish is its people and its success will always rise or

fall depending on the response of each person. As we remember we do not forget all

those gone before us to God whose contribution is now richly rewarded.

In this present time, as always, the challenge is reach out to those who for one reason

or another stay away from the church. I say this with no judgement at all, but with

encouragement. If you have stayed away for a long time, please come home. The doors

of our church remain open with a message of welcome. In my view it is a place, and

one of the few places, where anyone can enter. Once through the doors I hope you find

a place of mercy, of second, and many, more chances, a place where you can spend

time in silence, where you can question freely, where there is more an emphasis on the

message and ministry of Jesus rather than a narrow minded and judgemental view of

God. No-one has all the answers. In Jesus we find many answers, but he always

encouraged another question and wanted the follower to always be curious.

At the end of all our questioning let’s hope in the words of T. S. Eliot in Four Quartets:

We shall not cease from exploration

And the end of all our exploring

Will be to arrive where we started

And know the place for the first time.

Through the unknown, remembered gate

When the last of earth left to discover

Is that which was the beginning;

Over the past week people in the parish have been participating in ourAdvent week of guided prayer. Each day they come to meet with a prayerguide to reflect, share, and pray. We are very pleased to have a wonderful

team of Guides with us this week and it has been a very reflective and gentle startto the Christmas season here in the parish. It has been a great opportunity beforethe busyness and seasonal chaos begins to take over to have an opportunity to takesome time out and space for oneself. Many thanks to everyone involved, to theprayer guides, the participants for their openness and willingness to try somethingnew and all those in the daily running of the parish office who have facilitated ouruse of the Parish meeting rooms this week.

Anumber of Station (Road) Masses were celebrated across the Parish and inKilmacud during November. They are a welcome opportunity for parishioners from

a specific road to get together for Mass in a neighbour's home and catch up over acuppa afterwards. This was an initiative prompted by Fr Tony in early Autumn and hasproved to be very popular. Given the demand for these Masses it is hoped that theywill be continued again in the spring.

Church of St. Thérèse, Mount Merrion.

Ihave spent the last 25 yearsin the Diocese ofMonterey, California,

USA. Someone asked melast week what I enjoyedmost about it. Well, apart from the sunnysky, the big blue oceanand the white sandybeaches, I have enjoyedvery much working with adiverse group of people.

People in California come fromall over the world, many indeedfrom Central and Latin America. TheChurch in California is alive and vibrantwith many active, diverse parishes andministries. You see the diversity clearly atthe liturgy of the Mass with the inclusionof different languages, customs andmusic.

Welcome Fr. Jerry Maher

I have enjoyed being verymuch part of that diversity

and walking together withpeople who aresearching for a deepermeaning to life, whether questioningtheir faith or just tryingto live out what they

believe.

One of the Programmesin the Parish that I really

enjoyed is the Rite of ChristianInitiation for Adults (RCIA).

Adults who wished to be baptised, confirmed and receive holy communionat the Easter Vigil, journey as a groupwith a Parish Team to learn and sharetheir faith with each other. Of course, thisis so nourishing for those preparing forthe sacraments but also for the Parish

Team and the whole Parish FaithCommunity who experience the rituals atSunday Mass throughout the year. Peopleseem to have made the ‘choice’ to beCatholic and have a hunger and desire tobe nourished and participate in theirFaith.

Now, I am here for a time based inClonskeagh, but assisting in Kilmacudand Mount Merrion as well. There maybe less sunshine about that in California! However people are people everywhere. Iimagine we are all searching forsomething. All of us have questions andfears, joys and sorrows. I hope that mytime here will be nourishing for you andme and we can all grow together as acommunity of faith in whatever way theSpirit is moving in our lives.

Fr. Jerry
