Slide 2 Moving in the Cities Shanghai Urban Cycling Workshop for Radical Design Week 2012 Merita Soini 25.10.2012 Slide 3 Moving in the Cities Shanghai * EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The objective of the workshop is to map out the past, present and future of urban cycling in Shanghai. Metropolias goal is to share experiences, innovate potential futures and co-create a model of Moving in the Cities Shanghai Workbook. The resources needed for 3 days / 15 Donghua students, 3 Metropolia students. The challenge of two operating languages will be turned into an advantage for predominantly visual expression in documentation. The collected materials, illustrations and mindmaps of the workshop will be harvested in the form of a workbook. The project is structured as service design process with the emphasis of real life users and their needs. The purpose is to find identity for cycling friendly Shanghai in the future. Check out: www.theworldcafe.com Utilizing World Caf we split into groups of three for 20 minute sprints. One person holds the space for the group while the rest rotate through the groups. Within the two hour slots there are three sprints and harvestingwww.theworldcafe.com The data from the workshop will be refined in to a workbook through a process of facilitated conversation, harvesting and co-creation The work flow is designed to result in compact output with lots of visuals, freehand drawings, mind mapping and illustrations that can be utilized for the workbook. The goal is to keep the process light, quick, simple, effective and visual. Since we are using highly effective methodology it is important to maintain the required energy levels throughout the three days. Each day will start with check in and ends with check out in a circle. The idea is that everyone speaks their peace and has the ability to be together before doing together. Lunch is scheduled with optional meditation or nap. Afternoon break is with snacks. Water and fruit available throughout the day. Donghua students: The image of Shanghai with my eyes Metropolia students: The image of Helsinki with my eyes Photo stream with 15 photos, 3 photos from each 5 categories. While your photos are projected on the screen you will have 5 minutes to speak freely about cycling in your city. Tell about the past, present and future / typical, atypical, potential user profiles Ask three critical questions about urban cycling from the audience Slide 12 Moving in the Cities Shanghai * Chapter Two Ideate a service design concept for urban cycling: The process begins with brainstorming better questions, ideas and solutions to find out the users needs. Take notice to the cycling services, how things function in each category. What kind of services do users need? How to make cycling more attractive than driving a car? Think of the user experience as a service path including for example: 1.Infrastucture: routes, signs, lights, parking, safety 2.Information: maps, forums, services, plans; media, public, commercial 3.Services: sales, service, apparel, fashion, tours, community Mindmap: Use the A2 papers as a platform and visualize the service design concept with freehand illustrations, words and diagrams Slide 13 Moving in the Cities Shanghai * Chapter Three Build a cycling identity for Shanghai. Notion of Identity is the aspects of the city infrastructure that makes the urban cycling recognizable, unique or qualitatively different from others Choose pictures and words from the given material which best reflects your vision of cycling friendly Shanghai in the future. Mood board: Use the A2 papers as a platform and visualize the identity with pictures and words Slide 14 Moving in the Cities Shanghai * Chapter Four Choose a service design idea created yesterday and implement the identity from previous chapter into your service design concept. Use the A2 papers as a platform and visualize the identity, freehand illustrations Slide 15 Moving in the Cities Shanghai * Chapter Five Edit and Layout Future vision: The identity of Cycling Shanghai Harvesting works from previous chapters to a workbook size A0 and building a 10 minute presentation Write summaries, harvest the best graphics, photos and edit the material to be as visual as possible. Freehand drawing is recommended.
