We fully acknowledge that in our busy days we may make mistakes however, we are fully committed to provide the very best learning opportunities for all children/students in our school community. THANK YOU It has been significantly remiss of me not to have publicly thanked Katja Buyst for her considerable commitment to our school community as a member of Governing Council and our Parents and Friends Committee. Kate has been a long-serving member of Council after joining in 2013, which included the role of Vice-Chairperson. As a long-serving member on the Parents and Friends Group, Kate was involved in the move to have P&F come under the umbrella of Governing Council, which included refining their financial responsibilities. As a parent, Kate has been a strong advocate of the programs developed in our school and supported this behind the scenes in fundraising events including Compass Cup, the annual Christmas pageant and promoting the sales of the Entertainment Books.

CHARANGA The Department for Education Music Strategy has provided a website teaching portal to all schools in South Australia, called Charanga. Classroom teachers and specialist music teachers will now have access to use Charanga to complement their music teaching practice. The web-based tool contains a variety of songs for the students to learn and eventually will include teaching the classes to play musical instruments to accompany the songs. Mr Hansen is our key teacher on this project and will be supporting the Junior School classes to use this in their music lessons. Funding has also been provided to replenish some of the music instruments within the school that are featured in the Charanga learning program. PRIME MINISTER’S SPELLING BEE James Paech competed in the National Finals during Week 5 this Term and we are thrilled to announce he placed 9 th in Australia in the Year 5 and 6 students’ category. This is an amazing achievement to have one of our students recognized as a Top Ten speller in public and private schools across our nation. It is a credit to James and his family for supporting his interest and skills in spelling and demonstrates the benefits of our WRAP Spelling Program, which equips students with the knowledge and understanding of spelling rules and patterns so that they are capable of spelling a range of less common words. JUNIOR SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES Congratulations to our award winners who received a School Values Award for displaying either Respect (R), Kindness (K) or Integrity (I) at our Week 4 Assembly.

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME On Wednesday 19th May our R-6 students participated in National Simultaneous Storytime. This event captures over 1 million children to read the same book at the same time, across Australia and locations around the world, in schools, preschools, child care, libraries and book stores. This year’s story was ‘Give Me Some Space!’ by Philip Bunting. Classes at MCAS read in a variety of ways, including the hard copy book, a digital version, watched a clip of astronaut Dr Shannon Walker reading the book from the International Space Station or via the live-stream of the author reading the book at the Australian Space Discovery Centre in Adelaide. Many classes undertook related learning, art and craft about space and space travel after the story, with some older

classes buddying up with younger classes and working together.

SOIL SCIENCE STORY

The Year 4 (Foster) and Year 4/5 (Hansen) Science lessons were conducted over on the farm last week, where the

students were instructed by local Agronomist, Thomas Edwards about the different soils that were found there.

Students were able to use a soil sampler tool to look at the soil in two different paddocks and identify the different

nutrient, sand and moisture levels.

SAPSASA FOOTBALL

SAPSASA State AFL Carnival was held recently at West Beach. Stirling Down played in the Year 6 team for Southern

Fleurieu with the team winning all 9 of their matches to win Division 2 of the carnival. Hunter Bailey-Hill also played

in the Year 7 team. The Year 7 boys won the carnival and Hunter kicked 10 goals. Congratulations to both boys on

their great sport achievements.

R-6 LUNCHTIME DISCO

On Friday of week 6, we held a mini disco for the junior school during lunch time. It was great to see all the students

enjoying it and showing off their best footsteps moves. A big thanks to Mr Gramola and Jodi for lending us the

smoke machine and for testing the lights. Also, thanks to Nellie, Amber and Lilly for giving a helping hand. I am

excited for the next disco.

RECONCILIATION WEEK

National Sorry Day was on the 26th of May and Reconciliation Week started on the 27th of May to the 3rd of June.

Teachers worked through a variety of activities relating to the theme of reconciliation, including learning indigenous

games such as Parndo.

NUNGA SCREEN

On Thursday the 27th of May, Ms Foster and Merodi (Social Work Student) took interested Aboriginal and Torre

Strait Islander students to see Nunga Screen at the Victor Harbor Cinema. Students watched 4 short films that were

made in South Australia. It was a free event organised by the Country Arts of South Australia.

For the most part, it was really engaging. They showed how different people were working to achieve their goals and

were inspiring each other. They told us their stories. Their language and how they were inspired to do the things

they were doing. The first show was the one I enjoyed the most but it was an episodic series and we only watched

the first one before watching documentaries on people all around S.A. I still liked watching the documentaries but

they weren’t as much fun. Overall, I really enjoyed it and hope we can do it again soon.

Jasmine (Year 9)

I liked it because it tells us that just because we are indigenous, it doesn’t mean we can’t be anything we want. We

watched a good series called Thalu which was about outback kids. It was about some kids that needed to get a rock

to stop a sandstorm.

Emily (Year 5)

The Thalu was about outback kids and told us that you always stick together and help each other. It was really sad

though when it ended without telling what happened at the end.

Ahnikah (Year 7)

We watched 4 films and I learnt that you can achieve anything once you keep going out of your comfort zone. There

were 6 of us who watched and we all found it interesting.

Willow (Year 8)

We went to see Nunga Screen in Victor Harbor. The videos were so inspiring. I loved the videos! There was only one

other class there. The movie was so good. We watched 4 films. The first film was about these kids running from a

sandstorm and they all had to work together. The second one was about an Aboriginal girl (Ruth Wallace) who was a

champion soccer player and runner. The third was about two sisters, (Sansbury Sisters) that did dancing together.

The fourth one was called Mimli.

Scarlett (Year 4)

INDIGENOUS HISTORY

On Thursday the 3rd of June our year 10 HASS students, along with our year 8,9 and 10 ATSI students, took part in a

presentation held by Mark Koolmatrie. Mark is a Ramindjeri Elder of Ngarrindjeri Country and he grew up in

Raukkan, South Australia.

Our Year 10 HAS students have been learning about Indigenous History this term and in particular historic

movements and the freedoms and rights of Indigenous people in Australia.

Mark gave our students knowledge and insight in to movements such as the Freedom Rides; the Stolen Generation;

Land Rights; Indigenous people serving in World War 1; the 1937 Assimilation Policy and a brief history of Raukkan

and what it is today.

The knowledge shared from Mark was informative and valuable to the students, tying in with assessment tasks and

allowing others to learn new information about this Country, past and present.

Mark is passionate about passing on knowledge and has developed ways of sharing through his website and in

partnership with local people and business. Mark runs a tourism business ‘Kool Tours’ from the Coorong (Kurangk),

Port Elliot (Ratalang) and Yundi, as well as offering this presentation to schools.

More information can be found at: Kool Tours, www.kula-tind-jeri.com

STAGE 1 PHYSICS

On Friday of week 3, Stage 1 Physics students involved in our distance education program, from Gladstone and

Mount Compass got together for their first live day. They spent the day building parachutes as part of their design

experiment using the laser cutter and other materials. In the last lesson they went up to the town oval and dropped

the parachutes with the school drone. The Mount Compass students really enjoyed getting to know some of the

Gladstone students and are excited to meet up again next term. A big thanks to Mr Haggett, Mr Bosch, Mr Gramola

and Mr Blake for helping out and the canteen for supplying the food.

TARGET WORKS On the 27th of last month, the Target Work students were given an opportunity to experience harvesting olives at Strout Farm, Willunga. On this day students learnt the process of harvesting olives and since then have bottled the oil, designed a label and are now in the process of marketing their product. Owners of Strout Farm, Grahame and Pauline Giles, have generously given their time and experience to allow this opportunity for the students to occur. Also, they have offered our students casual employment since this day. The olives picked produced 100 litres of oil. The Frantoio Extra Virgin Olive Oil will be available in 1 litre bottles. Each bottle will retail at $15. See the order form attached under Community News of the newsletter if you are interested in purchasing bottle/s of the oil. All profits will go to the Target Works program. This experience has been invaluable to the Target Work students, and we give a big thank you to Grahame and Pauline Giles. Charlotte (Year 10) WHAT HAS BEEN HAPPENING ON THE FARM It has been a busy semester on the farm with plenty of exciting new projects and changes with the new build. The Year 8 class have received their goats ready for the Royal Adelaide Show. We have three boar goats (Timmy, Boof and Trevor) from Bon Chevon in the Barossa Valley. The students have started their training and the goats seem to be settling in nicely and the students have been fantastic throughout the training stages. The Year 10 class have successfully calved down our Beef Herd with 13 beautiful new calves joining our farm. All calving’s went smoothly with no issues, which was pleasing to see. Greg Nash from Prostock is in charge of our Artificial Insemination Program here at school, and the cows have just been AI’d in the hope that they all have successful mating. The Year 10 group have been keen to get the program rolling and are eagerly awaiting the results to see if the cows have successfully fallen pregnant. The year 11 and 12 senior students have kick started the year off really well with the arrival of their steers for the Adelaide Show. We will be exhibiting 5 steers (Lewis, Plugger, Arnie, Happy and Ferdie) the students are working hard to get their feeding plan correct and much needed kilograms of weight gained daily on their animals. We have been fortunate enough to have consistent visits from the breeders of these animals. Nutrien Strathalbyn have been visiting our school on various days conducting soil tests, pasture walks and having agronomy conversations about the growing season ahead with the students. The senior students have lambs in a feedlot situation where they are conducting a business into the profitability of such enterprises. Prostock have been involved in the animal health program with students drenching and weighing the lambs on arrival. The senior school

students have been conducting Faecal Egg Counts on the mob of sheep and from the data they will create animal health plans for the mob to eliminate any health complications. Here at Mount Compass Area School we also offer a Certificate Three in Agriculture which we have a full class. These students are heavily involved in all the running of the farm and are taught by Tafe lecturers thought out the year. They have successful constructed a fence on the farm and completed a various amount of competencies, they are about to tag and vaccinate our herd and complete their Chemical Certificates. This year in Home Economics the Year 10 group have a focus on Paddock to Plate; they have raised a school bred heifer in a feed lot situation throughout term one. The students will track her through to the plate, they will be attending Meat at the Mount and engage with the butcher and be shown how the beef is prepared into the cuts. The students will then take the cuts back to the kitchen and make a restaurant quality meal with the focus of paddock to plate experience for the consumer of their meat. Thankyou to all the community that have supported the Agriculture program with the sale of our point of lay chickens. We get some great learning out of the pullets and the kids are lucky to have a supportive community who buy our chickens. Winter is here, we are thankful for the rain so far which was much needed on our pastures. We have planted six paddocks this year to a blended mix of clover and ryegrass and alongside Nuriten Agronomists we are running some trials for the Year 12 student in Paddock 4. In the next few weeks we are excited to welcome to the farm the dairy team of heifers for the Year 9 class who have kindly been given to us from the Brokenshire Family. The McHugh family have been kind enough to donate the school some hay for the show animals, thankyou. We are very lucky at Mount Compass to have so many people involved in the agricultural program from the local community. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the participants of the upcoming heifer expo luck, this will occur in the second week of the holidays and we have 8 students from Mount Compass attending the Expo. Kiara Edwards (Ag Teacher) STUDENTS LEADERS Our Student Leaders aim for this year was 'Healthy Mind, Healthy Body' and one of their main events for this year will be to run our own version of the Relay for Life on Friday 25th June. Each class has been asked to choose their own Theme and we ask that all parents support their child to dress and behave respectfully. Each class will be given 1 x 45min lesson to run as many laps as possible of the town oval to raise money for the Cancer Council. Each child has been sent home with a Sponsor Form to raise money for the event and all money is to please be returned to school by the last day of Term, July 2nd.

THE “HOPE” EXPERIMENT During a brutal study at Harvard in the 1950s, Dr. Curt Richter placed rats in a pool of water to test how long they could tread water. On average they'd give up and sink after 15 minutes, but right before they gave up due to exhaustion, the researchers would pluck them out, dry them off, let them rest for a few minutes - and put them back in for a second round. In this second try - how long do you think they lasted? Remember - they had just swam until failure only a few short minutes ago. How long do you think? Another 15 minutes? 10 minutes? 5 minutes? No! 60 hours! That's not an error. That's right! 60 hours of swimming. The conclusion drawn was that since the rats BELIEVED that they would eventually be rescued, they could push their bodies way past what they previously thought impossible. When I read about this experiment, it made me think, if we can just find a bit of hope in a situation maybe, just maybe it could help us hold on a bit longer in hope that things will get better. I want to encourage you, find that little bit of hope to hang onto in times of difficulty.
