Principal’s Report

Golden Olden Day in Year 2 This week the Year 2 children completed their theme around Olden Days with an exciting activity day. Talking with the children and teachers it is so evident that the children have enjoyed the topic, and that they have learnt so much. I really enjoyed the bush dancing and the outdoor games. All classes made scones too!! What a great day!

Imagination at work

Imagination and visualisation are an important part of writing. Lillie, Alvin and Kirin were very proud to show me their very creative images of their lollipop forest and fairy floss trees. Also Alvin, Hanna and Helena used their imagination to draw how they saw themselves creeping through the forest. Great work 1B!

Photos: George Perini

So Much Talent in Years 5 and 6 As Years 5/6 completed their gold topic, they created some very detailed models to explain various aspects of their learning. Kostas (left) created this model of the Poppet Head at Sovereign Hill. It was really detailed. Excellent work Kostas!

Jordan (right) has a real passion for cars and he was very pleased to show me his drawing of his dream car …. a Ford Mustang!!! Congratulations Jordan on producing an excellent representation of your car. Hope your dream comes true!

Prep Cultural Day At Essex Heights one of our values is inclusiveness. We celebrate diversity and different cultures. In Prep this week we had our first Cultural Day. The children dressed up in recognition of their culture, they were involved in many different activities including making Chinese lanterns, indigenous culture, celebrating Italy and travelling around the world with their passports. They ended their international voyage by gathering together and having a multicultural lunch. What an amazing day!!

School resumes on Monday 15th July. I wish you all a great holiday with the children, and I look forward to seeing you all around the school in Term 3.

This competition could be the perfect holiday activity for you!

Here is the entry criteria:

Collect an application form from the Art Room.

Complete the application form and draw your design on the other side.

Write a short description about your design.

Return the design to the Art Room by Friday 19th July (first week of Term 3).

Diary Front Cover Art Competition

Earlier this term students across the school were asked to write letters of thanks to our current active service men and women. We have been lucky enough to receive replies from two members. This was a wonderful opportunity for the students to give something back to our community. Thank you to all those involved for your support.

Dear EHPS Students,

Thank you all so much for taking time out of class to write to us. My name is Hayden and I am a Private in the Australian Army, I am a command support clerk. We really appreciate the letters, often we can have really quiet times whilst deployed. This is due to our families also being quite busy and the time difference. But the support from our friends here and all the packages really get us though.

To Robin: Thank you for the picture you drew, I think are the best! I am enjoying myself, we mostly eat normal food like your parents would prepare. We are very fortunate to have lots of support.

To Daisy: I am happy to hear about your family. Reminds me on my family at home. I also have a very old and special teddy given to me by my grandfather when I was young. Cherish those for the memories!

To Catheryn: I feel happy because I am proud to be serving my country. We drink water mostly here. It is so hot here this month, almost 50 degrees! I can’t wait to come back to Aussie weather.

To Lucas: The sacrifices we face daily are to do with home life. Often family and friends have to be left behind as we serve our country. I played a lot of basketball growing up, my number was 14. I still play when I can.

Dear EHPS Students,

My name is Nicole, I was very excited to receive all the letters that you sent. Reading these definitely made our day great. I am a Corporal in the Australian Army and have been deployed overseas for 3 months. I miss my friends, family and my dogs so much. I can’t wait to see them again.

To Jai: I worked in a motorbike shop before I joined the Army. PS Loved your joke.

To Hridhaan: I feel very proud to be a soldier. I love my job. PS I hope you got to see Infinity War Endgame.

To Alana: I have read 2 books whilst being here. I do get letters and messages from my family and friends. PS Love your joke.

To Hina: I joined the Army because I wanted to have a meaningful job that would help our country. I am very proud to be an Australian Solider. I have been in the Army for 10 years.

Thank you again for all the messages. Please continue writing to us as it helps more than you can imagine.

From Hayden and Nicole

Prep PMP

During Term 2 we began the PMP (Perceptual Motor Program) with all the Prep children, and this will continue into Term 3.

What is PMP?

A Perceptual Motor Program that aims to develop your child’s perceptions and understanding of him/herself, space in which to move, and body rhythm through movement. The development of a child’s gross motor skills (large movements) promotes hand/eye /foot coordination, concentration and attention to learn, locomotion, and confidence to ‘have a go’.

What will it look like?

The activities involve such skills as balancing, crawling through, jumping over, hopping, climbing, throwing and catching, going over/under, along, sliding, skipping and many more.

When?

The sessions will run on Thursdays 25th July, 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd August during Term 3, from 2.30pm to 3.30pm in the Stadium. There will be approximately eight activities in each session, and the children will rotate around each activity. In order to maximise the potential skill development at each activity, we ask parents to come along to help at an activity.

PMP relies heavily on parent participation. Therefore we would love to see as many of you as possible each week. The roster will be placed inside Room E2 (Prep B) for you to add your names, if you are available to help. Remember, to volunteer to assist you need to hold a Working With Children Check and have read the EHPS Child Safe documentation, and signed the Child Safe acknowledgement - CLICK HERE for information.

If you have any questions please feel free to pop in for a chat.

Years 5 & 6 Developing Youth Attitudes Incursion

Years 5 and 6 were presented with a very engaging and relevant incursion last Monday, 24th June. The content was presented to the students through the Monash Council in order to develop positive youth attitudes, thinking and behaviour for safer, cleaner and healthier communities.

The presentation addressed the following: The prevention of graffiti crime and anti- social behaviours through life skills education. Incorporating strong themes of respect, self-esteem, responsibility and managing peer

influence. Encouraging a sense of community and civic pride. Demonstrating how negative personal choices can impact others and the community. Aligning with Civics & Citizenship, PDHPE, Pastoral Care and Visual Arts learning areas.

Illegal graffiti and tagging hurts everyone

It's not clever and it's not cool. Graffiti is an act of vandalism that costs millions of dollars to police to remove.

How your students can help? By participating in the Graffiti Education program students learn about the damaging economic, social and environmental impacts and are encouraged to become an active part of the solution.

During the presentation students learned about:

Legislation and definitions - including the difference between street or urban art and illegal graffiti/tagging.

Impacts and consequences - from perpetrator, victim and community perspectives.

Emotional and social motives - behind not only graffiti but other anti-social behaviours and the pitfalls of developing bad habits.

Alternatives and choices - exploring options for positive self-expression.

Hopefully the content resonated with the students and they will be able to make smart decisions now and in the future.

Maria Capsalis and Moira Lennon Years 5/6 Co-ordinators

On 25th June, on a glorious and sunny day, two soccer teams from Essex Heights went to participate in the Girls’ Soccer District Gala Day at Terrara Park in Vermont South. We were lucky enough to have four amazing coaches from the boys’ interschool soccer team. All the girls played very well and put in their best effort. The others teams also played very well and we learnt a lot from them. Even though we didn’t win the competition, we still had a great day. There were some very funny moments during the game and we all got a lot closer to each other.

Lucas S and Aydin J were the coaches of the Green team, and Xander and Maxim were the coaches of the White team. Our coaches were very supportive and helpful with their tips. The scores for the White team were 0-0, 1-2, 0-2 and 1-2. We had lots of fun. The scores for the Green team were 0-1, 1-0, 0-3 and 2-0.

Thank you to Mrs Cotterell for organising the day, and to Ms Capsalis and Mrs Austin for taking us to the venue, and for all their cheering and support. Thank you also to Katherine Barton for coming along to support us.
