STUDENT FREE DAY Tuesday 10th March is a student free day. Staff will be engaged in professional learning in developing learning tasks that meet the criteria of the Achievement Standards and also challenge our students to present work in new context. ANNUAL SPORTS DAY Sports day is next Friday 13th March; please take the time to join in what is always a great day. Mr Kevin Mooney

YEAR 12 CAMP On the first two days of Term 1 the Year 12 Class participated in their annual retreat to start their final year at Mount Compass Area School. On the first day students participated in an Amazing Race around Adelaide CBD, completing several challenges and obstacles along the way, including bocce, eating half a watermelon with no hands, calligraphy and memorizing phrases from books in the state library. This gave the Year 12 class an opportunity to bond as a class and begin what can be a stressful year with some fun. They finished the day with Mr Blake cooking dinner for the group and then heading to Marion for bowling. Day 2 of their camp involved sessions to prepare students for their studies this year and to maintain their wellbeing. My highlight was working in teams to explore the city. Cindy (Year 12) It was a good bonding experience. Josh (Year 12) I enjoyed playing ping pong at the campsite. Reece (Year 12) Watching people try to eat the watermelon was funny. Nina (Year 12) STUDENT LEADERS CAMP During week four of this term, all the year group captains had the privilege to go on a two-day camp to Chiton Rocks. There we discussed our plans for this year and had a chance to know each other through playing games, we also did body boarding at Horseshoe Bay which was fun.

We made plans for the year deciding on our target to be, ‘To make our school more environmentally minded’ and we hope that all initiatives will align with our target. Our first event is a casual day on Wednesday 25th March. We will ask for a gold coin donation and all the money will go to Drought Angels. Students are invited to dress as angels, farmers or farm animals, but can dress in their casual clothes too. We have also decided to run some Interhouse Sports Competition. Our first Interhouse Sports Competition will be Dodgeball. There will be a Junior School, Middle School and Senior School competition that will run on Wednesday in Term 1. I am truly excited to be part of this group and Interested to see what we can accomplish this year. By Caleb (Year 10) & Mrs Helen Fonfé SUPERLOOP ADELAIDE 500 On Thursday 20th of February we went on the bus to Adelaide to see the Superloop Adelaide 500. We went to all the bays on pit lane and were able to get the drivers to sign our hats when they came from their site. We saw motorbikes, cars, super trucks and trophy trucks. There was also an excellent military display of games and military equipment including tanks. My favourite part (and probably Mr Blake’s favourite too) was the trophy tucks. One of them attempted a jump, landed awkwardly and flipped the truck about 12 times. Luckily the ambulance was on hand and the driver walked away unhurt. Overall, this was a fun and great experience which everyone should have the chance to see. Oscar (Year 9) CONGRATULATIONS Rilee Endersby is a keen Year 9 cricketer here at Mount Compass Area School, he has seen some fantastic results throughout the summer season. Rilee has been playing for both Mount Compass Cricket Club, Southern District Stingrays, Great Southern Cricket Association and Fleurieu District rep team. Sunday the 23rd of February Rilee played in a grand final for Great Southern in which his team won. Rilee posted some very impressive results being top batting score of 38 and bowled 4 wickets earning him player of the match. Rilee has had many highlights throughout the summer season being a hat-rick, a grand final with Fleurieu and District, and an impressive 100 not out for Mount Compass Cricket Club. He is enjoying his cricket and his main focus and goal now is to try and work hard to get selected for the state squad. Congratulations Rilee on your achievements.

2020 SPORTS DAY Mount Compass Area School’s annual Sports Day is coming up again where all four teams, Tundi, Ilya, Wangami and Kungari, will go head to head to compete for the Sports Day House Shield. The day will be held Friday 13th March and is a compulsory whole school event. The day will be filled with a number of athletic events for students from all year levels to compete in and students are encouraged to wear their team colour. Students are asked to bring a hat, sunblock and plenty of water to drink throughout the day. The canteen will be open and a BBQ will be available, or students can bring a packed lunch and recess. Sports Day is a great day and we strongly encourage parents and family members to come along and cheer on their children and their team. The day will finish at 2:30pm with buses leaving at 2:45pm. The last couple of Sports Days have seen very close competition and results, with houses winning by mere points. We look forward to seeing which house will be awarded Champion of the 2020 Sports Day and look forward to seeing you all on the day. HOUSE CAPTAINS Congratulations to the following students on their election. Planning for Sports Day is well under way, and these students have a very important job in the lead-up to and on Sports Day. We wish them well!

YEAR 8 AQUATICS MURRAYLANDS During week 5 our Year 8 students attended the Murray Lands Aquatic centre for their 3 day camp. Over the first two days students were involved in a range of aquatic activities including; kayaking, wind-surfing, sailing, stand up paddle boarding and small boat handling. However, the most loved activity was clearly knee boarding, although we suffered many face plants and failures, all students were able to display resilience and complete their loops. On our way home Wednesday, we visited Monarto Zoo, seeing the Chimpanzees up close and having a guided tour of the amazing facility. I would like to thank all students who attended the camp, they represented our school and community with Integrity, Respect and Kindness. Well done.

WASHING HANDS Here's how to scrub those germs away. Demonstrate this routine to your kids — or better yet, wash your hands together often so they learn how important this good habit is:

1. Wash your hands in warm water. Make sure the water isn't too hot for little hands. 2. Use soap and lather up for about 10 to 15 seconds (antibacterial soap isn't necessary — any soap will do).

Make sure you get in between the fingers and under the nails where uninvited germs like to hang out. And don't forget the wrists!

3. Rinse and dry well with a clean towel.

Don't underestimate the power of hand washing! The few seconds you spend at the sink could save you trips to the doctor's office.
