Motivation is:The psychological feature that arouses an organism to action toward a desired goal, the reason for the action, that which gives purpose and direction to behavior. It is the internal and external factors that stimulate desire and energy in people to be continually interested in and committed to a job, role, or subject, and to persist in attaining a goal. Motivation results from the interactions among conscious and unconscious factors such as the:1. Intensity of desire or need2. Incentive or reward value of the goal, and3. Expectations of the individual and his or her significant others.

In the HIV prevention context, motivation is needed for:
•Getting individuals interested in the intervention (Recruitment)•Influencing people to actively participate in the program (Implementation)•Keeping participants interested to come back and remain actively involved (Retention)
III. Reaching Participants EffectivelyIII. Reaching Participants Effectively
Every great work begins with great vision and it all starts with what I can do now.
•Why do I do this job?•What do I get from this?•What makes people want to come to my program?•What do I offer different from what they can get anywhere else?•How do I see the community I work with?•How do I see them in 1, 2 or 5 years from now?•What am I doing to make that possible?
