Guided ReadingWhen reading we will use a combination of Fountas and Pinnellleveled trade books and our McGraw-Hill

Anthologies Skills will be introduced and practiced as whole

group small group and independently

Student progress will be measured with Aims Web Running Records

and with teacher observation

Students can visit my RAZ Kids page to practice reading at home

Listening and Learning

The students will practice listening and

speaking skills throughout the day

They will also demonstrate listening and learning during our Engage NY Listening

This year we will implement Writerrsquos Workshop with Lucy Calkins Units of Study The students will publish three pieces of writing Students will practice writing during Daily 5 stations

Spelling

Spelling Tests will begin in Oct Words and patterns will be sent home on Fridays for a test the following Friday Tests will also include a dictated sentence to monitor the progress of writing conventions

Phonemic Awareness and Phonics

Phonemic awareness phonics patterns for vowels and ldquohunks and chunksrdquo are all foundational skills necessary when learning to be independent readers We will be spending a great deal of time on these skills in First Grade A great classroom resource is Patricia Cunninghamrsquos Month by Month Phonics

Dolch WordsPlease be sure to practice sight words with your child for fluency and mastery Mastery = less than 3 seconds Dolch words are words that cannot be decoded and cannot be learned with pictures In addition to your childrsquos K list the children are now expected to recognizemaster the 1st gr list A 2nd gr list is available for students ready for a challenge

Shape Up Grammar

The children will be introduced to the parts of speech through a concrete model known as Shape Up Grammar Students will be associated a shape with a part of speech Then they will learn to write simple sentences Once we have finished all of the shapes the children will have a more concrete awareness of how to write a complex sentence with conjunctions prepositions and more

Each week the students will be taking timed fluency practices for both addition and subtraction First Grade students need to be fluent in facts through 10 Our number bond sprints will help build fluency but your help is needed at home as well Please practice math flash cards for 5-10 minutes daily or at least 5x a week Math Magician is a fun website to practice fact fluency

Homework and Quizzes

Homework will be sent home at the end of each Module Topic This homework will help your child demonstrate an understanding of the concept It will also help your child prepare and study for a quiz to follow within a day or two There will be a mid module and end of module assessment for each Module

Specials

Classroom instruction is supplemented and enhanced by attending a variety of specials These include music art physical education library and computer lab This yearrsquos schedule for specials can be located in the front pocket of your childrsquos go home folder

Dismissal

Dismissal begins at 310 Walkerspickup and Kids Kornerstudents will be safely dismissed first Bus students are escorted to their busses by the classroom teacher Please be sure to review the policies and procedures for picking your child up early in the Tanglewood School Student Handbook

Please send a note in your childrsquos ldquoGo-homerdquo folderpacket with your child in the morning if there is to be a change in your childrsquos usual dismissal procedures

Behavioral Expectations

During our first few weeks of school we will spend a lot of time developing a

sense of community respect and establish classroom rules and expectations

I try very hard to maintain a learning environment that is safe comfortable and

respectful of each childrsquos right to learn

Behavior which is perceived as bullying or endangers the welfare of another student will not be tolerated and will receive a consequence of loss of recess Should the behavior

persist a student may be sent to the Principalrsquos Office Parentswill be notified should this occur

Birthdays are celebrated as close to the childrsquos actual date as possibleA class birthday bag will be sent home with the birthday child It has some books a game and a small birthday journal for you to help your child to write a brief entry about hisher special day Please be sure to return the birthday bag and itrsquos contents the next day

Please send in brownies cookies or individual cupcakes We appreciate napkins and foods that are easily distributed Please keep any goody bags and beverages for your home parties

We will celebrate any summer birthdays at the end of the school yearParents of children who celebrate a late June July or August birthday

will be notified of what they can contribute to our summer celebration

Each week the students will be taking timed fluency practices for both addition and subtraction First Grade students need to be fluent in facts through 10 Our number bond sprints will help build fluency but your help is needed at home as well Please practice math flash cards for 5-10 minutes daily or at least 5x a week Math Magician is a fun website to practice fact fluency

be going home in December March and June

We will continue to have our November Parent Teacher Conferences however no report will be given at that time This will provide us the opportunity to talk about your child and how

Dismissal

Dismissal begins at 310 Walkerspickup and Kids Kornerstudents will be safely dismissed first Bus students are escorted to their busses by the classroom teacher Please be sure to review the policies and procedures for picking your child up early in the Tanglewood School Student Handbook

Please send a note in your childrsquos ldquoGo-homerdquo folderpacket with your child in the morning if there is to be a change in your childrsquos usual dismissal procedures

Behavioral Expectations

During our first few weeks of school we will spend a lot of time developing a
