Words of BecomingA word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. ~Proverbs 25:11
To a large degree, our children will become what we tell them they are. If we tell ourchildren they are clumsy, forgetful or stupid, they will be clumsy, forgetful or stupid. How wereact to our childrens shortcomings - when they spill their breakfast cereal, when they leavetheir assignment for class at home, or when they return from a friends house an hour late -
determines what they will think of themselves and what they will become. In Genesis 49, Jacob blesses each of his sons, speaking words of becoming over them.
We can do the same. We can start feeding our children praise in the ordinary moments of ourdays. Give it like a vitamin supplement at each meal. Offer it for midday snacks. Serve it for asubstantial dessert. No matter what the age of our children, its never too late to include the all-important nutrient of affirmation in their diet.
At two, twelve or twenty-two, what we tell them they are, our children will become. What we say is what well get.
