Bipolar Disorder MedicationsBi = need for two meds to stabilize

Antidepressants Mood Stabilizers

Statistics: 40% of Mood Disorders are medicated with Alcohol and 60% with Illegal

Substance Use (Hammond 2011; NIH Grant 2006)

“Bipolar Disorder patients do not have

enough seratonin and they have too much

dopamine so they need two meds to stablize

them” (Hammond, 2011).

Recommendation:“Benzos should never be used more than two weeks if so then a patient should be moved on to an antidepressant”.

“Ambien should be taken no more than 30 days because over long periods of time it dumps into the liver and reacts like a benzo”.
