PRESIDENTS REPORT

Hi Members,

Our last event at the skidpan at Sydney Motorsport Park was a great success with over sixty entrants

from a number of clubs. With that many entrants our traffic management skills were stretched but at

the end of the day the event ran well and we had to cut one test as we were running out of time.

Thanks goes to Steve Gifford again for organising a great event and thanks to all the guys who helped

set up the cones and pack away at the end of the day. Our next event is at Ansell Park in the first

week of September, hopefully we will get some rain before then to keep the dust down.

Our next club meeting on the first Tuesday in September at the Glenbrook Baptist Church hall from

7:30pm.

All the best

Phil Whitaker

Devotions – September 2013

Introduction

We continue working through Dietrich Bonhoeffer's exposition on the Sermon on the Mount in his book

'The Cost of Discipleship'. We have been reading of Jesus' agreement with and affirmation of the law. Last

month we saw it as it applies to sexual relationships, and especially marriage. This month we continue with

the implications of this as it applies to the question of truthfulness.

The ReadingMatt 5:33

“Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you

have sworn.’ 34

But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35

or by the earth, for it is

his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36

And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one

hair white or black. 37

Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.” (ESV)

The teaching

As we have seen, when Jesus says “But I say to you...” we see Jesus not to be just an interpreter and

guardian of the law as the scribes and Pharisees were, but to be the Author and Giver of the Law. It is

only those who see Christ as the Giver and Fulfiller of the law that can attain to a true knowledge of the

law, that can truly fulfil it. This month's passage looks at this in the context of truthfulness.

What is an oath? It is an appeal made to God to witness a statement of fact or intention, and to call upon

him to avenge the truth of this statement. So how can Jesus say that this is 'sin', or comes from the evil

one? The answer is to be found in his concern for complete truthfulness.

As an aside, we are not talking about usurping the right of a court of law to exact an oath. In the

Reformation Confessions (the basis of modern Protestant theology) there is no question that this

prohibition extends to the oaths required by courts of law. There are many examples of oaths of this

nature in the Old Testament, Jesus himself used an oath in a court of law, and Paul frequently uses oath-

like expressions in his writings.

The very existence of oaths is a proof that there are such things as lies. If lying was unknown there would

be no need for oaths. Oaths are intended as a barrier against untruthfulness. But it goes further than that:

for where an oath is required to affirm final truth, space in life is given to the lie, and it is granted a certain

right of life. The Old Testament had expressed its condemnation of the lie by the use of the oath. But

Jesus destroys the lie by forbidding oaths altogether. It is a question of the destruction of untruth in the

life believer. So the oath must go, since it gives protection to the lie.

When Jesus says let your Yes be Yes and your No be No, this is not to say that believers are no longer

answerable to the the omniscient God, but rather, that every word they speak is done so in God's presence,

not only those accompanied by an oath. Since they speak the truth and nothing but the truth there is no

need for an oath, which would throw doubt on the veracity of all their other statements. That is why the

oath is “of the evil one”. But a disciple must be light, even in his words.

In this question of truthfulness what matters above all else is that person's whole being should be exposed,

his whole evil laid bare in the light of God. But sinful men do not like this sort of truthfulness, and they

resist it with all their might. That is why they persecute it and crucify it. It is only because we follow

Jesus that we can be genuinely truthful, for then he reveals to us our sin upon the cross. The cross is God's

truth about us, and therefore it is the only power which can make us truthful. When we know the cross we

are no longer afraid of the truth. We no longer need oaths to confirm the truth of our speech, for we live in

the perfect truth of God.

There is no truth towards Jesus without truth towards man. Untruthfulness destroys fellowship, but truth

cuts false fellowship to pieces and establishes genuine brotherhood. We cannot follow Christ unless we

live in revealed truth before God and man.

Prayer

Father, we thank you for your saving grace through Jesus Christ. May we lay down our lives by living our

lives in complete truthfulness before you and before men, for our sakes, and for your glory.
