LCAP Goal #1 Our district and schools have been working on our Local

Accountability Plan and Goals for the districts. Below is

Reclassification - is the process for determining that an EL student has become Fluent English Proficient.

DIBELS- The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) are a set of procedures and measures for assessing the acquisition of early literacy skills from K-6th grade.

RIT (Rausch Unit)-Student MAP testing results are re-ported in RIT scores (short for Rasch Unit). A RIT score is an estimation of a student’s instructional level and also measures student progress or growth in school. MAP( Measures of Academic Progress)- is a state-aligned computerized adaptive assessment program that provides educators with the information they need to improve teaching and learning and make student-focused, data-driven decisions. Students in grades K-5th at Monroe will be tested 3 times per year in math. Students in grades 3rd-5th will be tested in reading. Teachers and administrators use the growth and achievement data from MAP to de-velop targeted instructional strategies to help meet stu-dents’ needs and to plan school improvement. UC (University of California) A-G Requirements- The re-quirements needed to enter UC as a freshman. Specifically, students must complete a pattern of 15 college-preparatory courses drawn from the areas of history/social science, English, math, lab science, a language other than English, the visual and performing arts and the college-preparatory elective. We label each subject area or requirement with a letter to easily identify the different course requirements. EAP- The Early Assessment Program (EAP) is an academic preparation program developed by the California Depart-ment of Education (CDE), the State Board of Education, and the California State University (CSU). The program was es-tablished to provide opportunities for students to measure their readiness for college-level English and mathematics in their junior year of high school, and to facilitate opportuni-ties for them to improve their skills during their senior year. The goal of the EAP program is to have California high school graduates enter the CSU fully prepared to be-gin college-level study. Post-Secondary Education- Post-secondary education, also called higher or tertiary education, is an optional level of schooling beyond what is required by law in most places. University learning is one of the most common examples, but community colleges, vocational schools, and trade pro-grams also qualify.

Reclasificación - El proceso para determinar que un estudiante se ha adquirido el Ingles Fluido. DIBELS- Los Indicadores Dinámicos de Habilidades Básicas de Alfabetización (DIBELS) son un conjunto de procedimientos y medidas para evaluar la adquisición de las habilidades de alfa-betización temprana desde el K– 6o grado. RIT ( Unidad de Rausch ) Resultados de las pruebas MAP se re-portan en la puntuación de RIT (abreviatura de Unidad Rasch ). Una puntuación RIT es una estimación del nivel de instrucción de los estudiantes y también mide el progreso o el crecimiento en la escuela del estudiante . MAP ( Medidas de Progreso Académico )- es un programa de adaptación computarizada alineado por el estado de evaluación que proporciona a los educadores con la información que nece-sitan para mejorar la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de los estu-diantes y tomar decisiones enfocadas, basadas en datos. Los es-tudiantes en los grados de K-5to grado en Monroe serán evalua-dos 3 veces al año en matemáticas. Los estudiantes en los grados 3 a 5 se pondrán a prueba en la lectura. Los maestros y admi-nistradores utilizaran los datos de crecimiento y logros de MAP para desarrollar estrategias educativas específicas para ayudar a satisfacer las necesidades de los estudiantes y al plan de mejora-miento escolar . UC ( Universidad de California ) A-G Requisitos - Requisitos ne-cesarios para entrar en la Universidad de California en su primer año. En concreto, los estudiantes deben completar un patrón de 15 cursos preparatorios para la universidad en las áreas de his-toria/ciencias sociales, Inglés, matemáticas, ciencias de labora-torio, un idioma que no sea Inglés, las artes visuales y escéni-cas y la electiva de preparación universitaria. Nosotros eti-quetamos cada materia o requerimiento con una letra para identificar fácilmente los diferentes requisitos de cursos . EAP (El Programa de Evaluación Temprana)- es un programa de preparación académica desarrollada por el Departamento de Educación de California (CDE), la Junta Estatal de Educa-ción , y la Universidad Estatal de California (CSU). El programa fue establecido para proporcionar oportunidades a los estudian-tes para medir su preparación para nivel universitario Inglés y matemáticas en su penúltimo año de la escuela secundaria y pa-ra facilitar las oportunidades para que mejoren sus habilidades durante su último año. Monroe Phone Calls: Periodically we will be sending out a recorded message to all parents through a phone call.

These calls are to communicate important updates about the school or to remind parents about school

events.

Has your Phone # changed? Please call the office anytime there is a change in your phone number or emergency contact infor-

mation.

Parent/Teacher Conferences: Conferences will be the week of December 15th-19th. Please be sure to sign the form sent home with your child and return to their teacher with

the conference time you are available-see schedule. It is important for ALL parents to meet with their

child’s teacher during Winter Conferences.

Student Free Day- NO CLASSES 12/15 Monday, December 15th, 2014

No school for Students on Monday, December 15th, 2014. This is a Student Free day in order to allow Teachers to have conferences with parents during

the day.

Modified Days: 12/16-12/19 Due to Parent/Teacher Conferences all students

will be on modified day schedule beginning Tues-day, December 16th through Friday, December 19th. Please be sure to pick up your student on

Safety Reminders: Student safety is priority at Monroe Elementary School. We need your help in insuring our students are safe at school and coming to and from school. We want to ensure our school grounds are safe and that we know who is on campus. It is very important that we all work together to make sure our students arrive safely to and from school.

Visitor Sign-In

We are asking that all visitors sign in to the office. We ask all parents to please come by the front office to come in to school even if its to drop off your child’s lunch.

Volunteering We love having our volunteers and want to encourage

our parents to volunteer. Before a family member can vol-unteer, they must complete a volunteer form and bring a

photo ID or a copy. The paperwork is submitted to the district and we must wait for approval. If you are inter-ested in volunteering, please come by the office for the

form. Thank you.

Crossing the street: Parents, we are asking you to review rules for walking to school with your child. Please make sure you are careful when walking to school. Be aware of everything around

you including cars and people. If there is a crossing guard please wait until they tell you to cross. Before

crossing the street you should pause, look both ways twice and then when you see that no cars are coming, you may cross the street. Only cross in designated crosswalks. Please make sure you ask your children to cross at the corner by the bike Trail. Central Ave can be extremely dangerous and many children cross where they are not suppose to and put themselves and others in danger. If

you are dropping off your child, only use the Delhi to en-ter Monroe’s parking lot to drop of your child safely.

Thank you for reviewing the rules for pedestrian safety with your children.

Parking Lot: Parents, we are asking that everyone drive slowly

through the parking lot. Students, staff and parents are walking from their cars into the school and we

want to make sure we are looking out for everyone’s safety. Do not double park and leave the area for the

bus clear.

Gates close at 8:00a.m. Each day we will close the gates at 8:00am.

Remember instruction begins at 8:00am.

Breakfast For ALL !!! 7:30-7:50 am

Breakfast is indeed a very important meal. A good breakfast fuels you up and gets you ready for the day.

In general, kids and teens who eat breakfast have more energy, do better in school, and eat healthier through-out the day. Without breakfast, people can get irritable,

restless, and tired.

So make time for breakfast — for you and your kids! Please remember that we stop serving breakfast at

7:50am.

Conferencias de Padres/Maestros: Las conferencias serán la semana del 16-19 de di-ciembre. Por favor asegúrese de firmar el formula-

rio enviado a casa con su hijo (a) y devolverla al maestro (a) con el día de la conferencia que usted está disponible- ver horario. Es importante que to-dos los padres se reúnan con los maestros de sus

hijos durante las conferencias de invierno.

Recordatorios de Seguridad: La seguridad de los estudiantes es la primera prioridad en la Escuela Monroe. Necesitamos su ayuda en asegurar que

nuestros estudiantes estén seguros en la escuela, al ir y venir a la escuela. Es muy importante que todos trabaje-mos juntos para asegurarnos de que nuestros estudiantes lleguen con seguridad a la escuela. También queremos

Cruzando Las Calles: Padres, les pedimos de favor que revisen las reglas de co-mo caminar a la escuela con su hijo. Por favor, asegúrese de caminar con cuidado a la escuela. Esté al tanto de todo lo que le rodea incluyendo carros y personas. Si hay un guardia de cruce por favor espere hasta que le digan que cruce. Antes de cruzar la calle usted debe: pausar, mirar a ambos lados dos veces y cuando vea que no estén pasando carro, puede cruzar la calle. Sólo cruce la calle en los cru-ces designados. Por favor, asegúrese de decirles a sus hijos que crucen en la esquina por la pista de bicicletas. La ave-nida Central es muy peligrosa y muchos niños cruzan la calle exponiéndose al peligro. Si usted trae a su hijo, por favor, asegúrese de entrar por el estacionamiento de Delhi y de detenerse en las áreas designadas. Gracias por revisar las normas de seguridad de los peatones con sus hijos.

Estacionamiento: Padres, estamos pidiendo que todos conduzcan des-pacio y con mucho cuidado por el estacionamiento. Estudiantes, personal y padres están caminando desde sus carros a la escuela y queremos garantizar la seguridad de todos. No se estacione en doble fila.

Los Portones se Cierran a las 8:00am Cada día los portones se cierran a las 8:00am.

Recuerde las clases empiezan a las 8:00am.

Desayuno para Todos !!! 7:30-7:50 am

El desayuno es la comida mas importante del día. Un buen

desayuno nos prepara para el día. En general, los niños y ado-

lescentes que desayunan tienen más energía, les va mejor en

la escuela, y comen más saludable durante todo el día. Sin

desayuno, nos podemos poner mas irritables, inquietos y

cansados.

Así que haga tiempo para el desayuno - para usted y sus

niños!!

PARENT CONFERENCES

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held the week of

December 15th

to December 19th

, 2014.

We will be on MODIFIED schedule from Tuesday, December 16th through Friday, December 19th. Monday, December 15, 2014 is a Student Free Day – NO CLASSES.

It is very important that all parents attend to find out about their child’s progress.

Below is a list of questions parents can ask at conference time: What skills and knowledge will my child be expected to learn this year? What will my child learn this year in key subjects like math, science, history, and English? What are my child’s strengths? What are areas my child needs extra help in? What can I do to help my child? How are grades determined in your classroom? What kind of tests do the students have to take? How are my child’s work habits? Does he/ she finish assigned tasks? How is my child’s behavior? Does he/ she participate in class? What can I do to stay more involved in my child's education? What can I do at home to help my child be successful at school? How can I know on a daily basis what homework has been assigned? How can I help my child get to Proficient or Advanced on his/her tests? Which math facts should my child know by memory? What level of book should my child be reading? How much time should my child be reading each day?

Select some questions from this list or come up with additional questions and take your questions to the conference with you.

This year we will have new grading guidelines, new English Learner Proficiency goals and new goals for reading for first

second and third grades.

New Grading Scale Grading is now on a four point scale instead of a five point scale. Now a student who receives a “3” is considered as

working at grade level. The new grading scale is explained below.

New Proficiency Levels for English Learners EM/Emerging: Students at this level typically progress very quickly, learning to use English for immediate needs as

well as beginning to understand and use academic vocabulary and other features of academic language.

EX/Expanding: Students at this level are challenged to increase their English skills in more contexts, and learn a greater variety of vocabulary and linguistic structures, applying their growing language skills in more sophisticated ways ap-propriate to their age and grade level.

BR/Bridging: Students at this level continue to learn and apply a range of high‐level English language skills in a wide variety of contexts, including comprehension and production of highly technical texts. However, ELs at all levels of English language proficiency fully participate in grade level tasks in all content areas with varying degrees of scaffolding in order to develop both content knowledge and English.

Las conferencias entre padres y maestros se llevarán a cabo la semana del 15 al 19 de Diciembre, 2014. Toda la semana del 16-19 de diciembre serán Días Modificados.

Nuevos Niveles de Habilidad para Aprendices de Inglés EM/Emergente: Los estudiantes del inglés ingresan al nivel Emergente teniendo habilidades receptivas y productivas

limitadas en inglés. A medida que progresan a través del nivel Emergente, empiezan a responder a tareas de comunica-

ción más variadas usando con mayor facilidad las palabras y frases aprendidas. Al egresar del nivel Emergente, los estu-

diantes tienen habilidades básicas de comunicación en inglés, en contextos sociales y académicos.

EX/Ampliación: En nivel de Ampliación, pasan de ser capaces de modificar frases y oraciones aprendidas en inglés, para

satisfacer sus necesidades inmediatas de comunicación y aprendizaje, a participar cada vez más en el uso del idioma

inglés en situaciones más complejas y cognitivamente difíciles. Al egresar del nivel de Ampliación, los estudiantes pue-

den utilizar el inglés para aprender y comunicarse sobre una variedad de temas y áreas de contenido académico.

BR/Bridging: A medida que los estudiantes del inglés progresan a través del nivel de Transición, pasan de ser capaces de

comunicarse de manera adecuada a las diferentes tareas, propósitos y audiencias, en una variedad de contextos sociales y

Nurturing the Spirit of Giving in Kids The holiday season is about giving, but we often times “get” more than we give. Teach your kids to help others by be-

ing generous not only during the holidays, but as they continue to grow, year after year, into empathetic adults

How does teaching kids to give make a difference? Here’s what research says:

Young people who volunteer learn many life skills, such as responsibility, punctuality, reliability, and getting along with others.

Young people who give improve the community, and they see themselves as making a difference, which em-powers them to contribute even more.

55% of all young people volunteer and help others.

Young people are much more likely to volunteer and give when they have parents and/or siblings who also do so.

Young people are more likely to volunteer and give as adults if they start when they’re young.

Young people who give and volunteer are more likely to make positive choices (such as succeeding in school and valuing diversity).

Young people who give and volunteer are less likely to get into trouble and take risks, such as drinking alco-hol.

As a family, you can do a number of giving projects together during the holidays. Every December, you can sit down with our kids and talk about the social issues they’re concerned about. It can be something simple. Come up with a way you can show kindness to someone else. Since many people and families volunteer during the holiday season, you can also decide how you want to volunteer and then make plans to do so throughout the year. When you make giving and caring a part of your family life, your kids are much more likely to give and care on their own. They’re also much more globally aware and talk about social concerns and what we can do to make the world a better place. This is not only a great attitude to have during the holidays but also a great attitude to have every day throughout the year—and throughout our lives.

We want to make sure that students keep their minds active during their two week vacation. Also, each student

should be reading at least 30-60 minutes per day. You should also have your child write in a journal. You become a

Queremos asegurar que los alumnos mantengan su mente active durante las vacaciones. Cada estudiante debe leer
