Article from Fr. Paul Joseph Spellman Dear Parishioners of St. Margaret Mary Church and School,

I was asked to write an article for the Peninsula News and this is what I submitted. Just in case you don't get the newspaper!

In the summer of 1983, after recently completing my M.B.A. (Master's in Business Administration), I joined the investment firm of Kidder, Peabody & Co, in downtown Los Angeles. At the end of my first day on the job I stopped at a newsstand and picked up a copy of BusinessWeek that ran the head-line, "What's Behind the Market's Wild Ride?" The Dow Jones Industrial Average had just broken through the 1300 level. As they say, the sky was the limit. Some analysts predicted that it could go as high as 3000 by the turn of the millennium!

Earlier this week the DJIA broke through the 36000 mark for the first time ever. (Note: The Wall Street Journal does not yet use commas when reporting the numbers, so neither do I.) Just think about the amount of wealth that has been generated from this! Not just for stock-brokers, hedge fund managers, and commodities traders, but for so many people who have their retirement funds and other assets invested in the market. I have my personal retirement funds in-vested in a Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) fund and it is outperforming the market in almost every quarter.

How can we quantify this wealth? Yesterday I picked up a copy of Forbes magazine (the October/ November 2021 issue) which highlights the "Forbes 400" which lists the 400 wealthiest people in America. The total wealth for all 400 of them? $4.5 trillion! That is an average of over $11 billion for each one of them!

Sometimes I drive though the Peninsula and I am passed by a Ferrari or a McLaren, or I ride my bike around the local marinas and I see some of the huge yachts that are moored in the waters. And, I often ask myself, "Do these cars and yachts belong to members of the Forbes 400?" According to the magazine article a lot of billionaires live here in California, so it is certainly possible.

And then I reflect on my time in Bolivia, Cambodia, Nepal, and Uganda. And I recall seeing children who do not have access to clean

safe drinking water, or healthy food. And then I think about the 40,000 children who die each day on our planet, simply because they do not have the basic necessities of life. This should not happen in this day and age!

A few years ago an economist pointed out that if every person in America, Canada, Europe, Japan, and Australia sat down at the end of the year and calculated their annual expenditures on alcohol (including beer and wine), tobac-co products (including cigars), restaurants, make-up, hair products, and designer clothes (including accessories such as hats, belts, purses, and shoes), and then gave an equal amount to an overseas aid agency, within five years every person on earth would have access to clean, safe drinking water. Every single man, woman, and child! Wouldn't that be amazing?

But, what is the incentive for the wealthy to do this? Obviously, from a faith-based perspective, it is a way of sharing the gifts that God has given us with those who are less fortunate. Remember, we don't really own anything. We are merely stew-ards of our earthly possessions until our life here on earth comes to an end. But even a person who has no specific religious beliefs would see the positive aspects of contributing to the saving of human lives. And, what about the tax bene-fits? Congress allows us to take a tax deduction for our Charitable Contributions. So, if a wealthy person were to give $1 million to Charity, they would save over $390,000 in Federal taxes. Isn't that a great incentive?

I will never make enough to make a donation like that, and I certainly don't buy designer clothes. But, I do track my annual expenses to make sure that what I spend on myself is matched by what I give to those who are strug-gling to find safe, clean water. Just think of what would happen if everyone did that. Especially the billionaires of the Forbes 400. Perhaps this year they will.

Liz Desmond, Life-long Parishioner

Hello, my name is Liz (Gannon) Desmond and I have been a member of Saint Margaret Mary parish

for all of my 68 years. I am fortunate to be part of two founding families, the Gannons and the Views. My Grandparents Gannon and my Aunts and Un-cles Views helped build the church and start many different programs. One of the programs they were always a part of and inspired me to also become a

part of was the religious formation of children, youth and adults. I began with Don Boyd in the preschool program of 3 to 5 year olds. What joy and fun to see

the little ones grow in their love for Jesus. Then I started to help with the Confirmation program. It

would fill my heart with wonder and awe to see the dawn of understanding come over the youth as they

came to know the great love God has for them. I am very honored to be a member of Saint Marga-

ret Mary parish.

Fr. John V. Hegarty, Pastor, 1945-1971

The parish’s fourth pastor was Father John Hegarty. Born in County Cork, Ireland, Father Hegarty was only 42 years old when he was appointed pastor. His visionary leadership during his 26-year pastorate included the purchase of the church property and construction of a new church, school, rectory, hall and convent. He was a dynamic fundraiser and organizer. He instilled in parishioners a remarkable spirit of volunteer-ism. He found a community of families eager to collaborate - Gannon, Hicks, Gardner, Conner, Brandelli, Sandoval, Joosten, Habousch, View, Butterfield – names of our pioneers who will be forever remembered as those who led the way to form our vibrant parish.

Estimados feligreses de la Iglesia y escuela Santa Margarita María.

Me pidieron que escribiera un artículo para Peninsula News y esto es lo que envié. ¡En caso de que no reciban el periódico! En el verano de 1983, después de terminar recientemente mi MBA (Maestría en Administración de Empresas), me uní a la firma de inversiones Kidder, Peabody & Co, en el centro de Los Ángeles. Al final de mi primer día en el trabajo, me detuve en un quiosco y compré una copia de BusinessWeek que decía: "¿Qué hay detrás del viaje salvaje del mercado?" El promedio industrial Dow Jo-nes acababa de superar el nivel de 1300. Como dicen, el cielo era el límite. ¡Algunos analistas predijeron que podría llegar hasta 3000 para el cambio de milenio!

A principios de esa semana, el DJIA rompió la marca de 36000 por primera vez. (Nota: The Wall Street Journal aún no usa comas cuando informa los números, así que yo tampoco). ¡Solo piense en la cantidad de riqueza que se ha generado a partir de esto! Entonces, si una persona rica donara $ 1 millón a Charity, ahorraría más de $ 390,000 en impuestos federales. ¿No es un gran incentivo? Nunca ganaré lo suficiente para hacer una donación como esa, y ciertamente no compro ropa de diseñador. Pero sí hago un seguimiento de mis gastos anuales para asegurarme de que lo que gasto en mí mismo se corres-ponda con lo que le doy a aquellos que luchan por encontrar agua limpia y segura. Solo piensa en lo que pasaría si todos hicieran eso. Especialmente los multimi-llonarios de Forbes 400. Quizás este año lo hagan. MI HISTORIA EN SANTA MARGARITA MARIA

Liz Desmond, feligrés de toda la vida

Hola, mi nombre es Liz (Gannon) Des-mond y he sido miembro de la parroquia de Santa Margarita María durante todos mis 68 años. Tengo la suerte de ser parte de dos familias fundadoras, los Gannon y los Views. Mis abuelos Gannon y mis tías y tíos Views ayudaron a construir la Iglesia y a iniciar muchos programas diferentes. Uno de los programas de los que siempre formaron parte y de los que me inspirarán a formar parte también fue la Formación Religiosa de niños, jóvenes y adultos. Comencé con Don Boyd en el programa preescolar de niños de 3 a 5 años. Qué alegría y diversión ver a los pequeños crecer en su amor por Jesús. Luego comencé a ayudar con el programa de Confirmación. Me llenaría el corazón de asombro y asombro al ver el amanecer de la comprensión sobre los jóvenes al llegar a conocer el gran amor que Dios tiene por ellos. Me siento muy honrada de ser miembro de la Parroquia de Santa Margarita María.

Padre John V. Hegarty, Pastor, 1945-1971

El cuarto Párroco de la Parroquia fue el Padre John Hegarty. Nacido en el condado de Cork, Irlanda, el Padre Hegarty tenía solo 42 años cuando fue nombrado pastor. Su liderazgo visionario durante su Pastorado de 26 años inclu-yó la compra de la propiedad de la Iglesia y la construcción de una nueva Iglesia, escuela, Rectoría, salón y Convento. Fue un organizador y recaudador de fondos dinámico. Inculcó en los feligreses un notable espíritu de voluntariado. Encontró una comunidad de familias ansiosas por colaborar: Gannon, Hicks, Gardner, Conner, Brandelli, Sandoval, Joosten, Habousch, View, Butterfield, nombres de nuestros pioneros que serán recordados para siempre como aquellos que abrieron el camino para formar nuestra vibrante Parroquia.

MUCHAS GRACIAS En el corazón amoroso de Jesús siempre está presente la familia, y este lunes pasado se vio el gozo amoroso del

Corazón de Dios en la comunidad de Santa Margarita María, en que más de 750 personas se han reunido en familia para vivir un retiro, para crecer en la fe, unirse en el amor, y agradecer a Dios los dones de la familia. Agradecemos a todas las familias que estuvieron presentes viviendo este hermoso retiro familiar, entorno al jubileo de los 85 años de nuestra Parroquia. Que el Señor siga bendiciendo y uniendo a nuestra familia en el amor de Jesús. Agradecemos a todos aquellos que estuvieron partici-pando y a todos aquellos que estuvieron colaborando para llevar a cabo este retiro.

Que Dios los bendiga y los llene de su Gracia y de su Paz.

Hoy terminamos otro año litúrgico, es la semana trein-taitresina del Tiempo Ordinario. El próximo domingo vamos a celebrar a Cristo Rey del Universo, eso quiere decir que esa es la última semana ya que Cristo Rey es el que divide el ciclo anterior con el nuevo ciclo. El nuevo ciclo (C) que empieza con el Tiempo de Adviento (primer domingo). Como quien dice es el año nuevo de la iglesia,

En este mundo moderno que habitamos, rara es la persona que no ha tenido que trasladarse de una nación a otra, ya sea por motivos de necesidad políti-ca, económica, comercial o simplemente por motivos turísticos o de descanso. Pero vemos que el que se prepara a un viaje tiene que tener presente una serie de preparativos sin los cuales no podrá efectuar el propó-sito. Hay que tener en cuenta la obtención del pasapor-te, los gastos del viaje, el dinero que se va a emplear, las direcciones que necesita, los guías, mapas, en fin, un gran número de precauciones que casi todos cono-cemos.

Nosotros todos estamos embarcados en un viaje. Nos dirigimos a nuestro destino, el cielo. Tenemos nuestro pasaporte: el bautismo. Tenemos los medios necesarios para alcanzar nuestro destino: los Sacra-mentos, mediante los cuales recibimos la gracia, la amistad de Dios que nos conforta y ayuda en nuestro peregrinar hacia El. Tenemos a nuestra disposición también las guías necesarias: la Palabra de Dios, la iglesia, los sacerdotes. Si sabemos escoger bien nues-tra agencia de pasaje, no tendremos dificultad de llegar al fin de nuestro viaje, y allí encontraremos a Jesús que nos dirá: Vengan, benditos de mi Padre, al Reino, al Reino que les tengo preparado”. La iglesia nos quiere recordar nuestro último fin, así como el último fin de la creación. El evangelio nos ha comunicado que después de ciertos signos apocalípti-cos veremos al Hijo del Hombre venir en medio de las

nubes con gran poder y gloria. Frente a esta expectati-va nos podemos preguntar: ¿Cuál es nuestro fin? ¿para qué existimos? Cuando éramos pequeños nos decían en el catecismo:” Existimos para servir a Dios en esta vida y verlo y gozarlo en la otra” Es decir, nuestro último fin, nuestro destino eterno es gozar eternamen-te en la presencia de Dios. Pero nuestra libertad es capaz, si no somos fieles a los valores que Jesús nos predicó, de hacernos perder ese premio eterno que Dios nos tiene prometido: la felicidad eterna con El.

Jesús vino para que cuando se acaben los mundos, no pensemos que esta vida es el acabose, sino que aun hay un futuro; que en todo momento, con Jesús, pode-mos crear un mundo nuevo, un nuevo cielo en nuestra vida, Continuamente caen o se desploman mundos culturales, políticos y económicos, como cayó el imperio y mundo griego, el mundo judío, el imperio romano y el mundo colonial español; también caen los mundos privados; por la muerte de un ser querido, una enfermedad, la infidelidad de un esposo, ruina econó-mica, reputación arruinada, etc. Jesús vino para que cuando se nos acaben esos mundos humanos nos salvemos, ayudándonos a poner las cosas en perspecti-va de la eternidad y del amor de Dios.

Reflexión

La vida es un don precioso de Dios, y como es la única que conocemos, como es la que estamos vivien-do, nos apegamos a ella, nos tratamos de convencer que el fin siempre está lejos. Pero no sabemos ni el día ni la hora, de ahí la vigilancia y la preparación cristiana. Debemos estar conscientes de que esta vida no es nuestra verdadera vida, sino una preparación para la vida eterna, la vida verdadera y que prolongará por toda la eternidad.
