EARLY DISMISSALS
School will dismiss early on the following dates this
year for teacher in-service. AM Transitional Kinder-
garten will be held as usual but there will be no PM
Transitional Kindergarten on these days.
Dismissal times: Dismissal Dates:

1:15 p.m. High School March 13

Several sources will be used when making the decision to close school including the National Weather Service, local radio
stations, spotters from the rural area, conversations with neighboring school districts, personal checks of the roads, etc.
Area radio stations are the first line of communication. MOC-Floyd Valley uses KSOU (1090 AM, 93.9 FM), KLEM (1410
AM, 99.5 FM), KIWA (1550 AM, 105.5 FM), KDCR (88.5 FM), as well as TV stations KMEG, KTIV and KCAU. The Dis-
trict also uses the online resource - SNOWCAP. Every attempt will be made to have late start or school cancellation an-
nouncements posted to the media by 6:00 a.m.
If school starts late, all before-school activities will be cancelled, there will be no AM Transitional Kindergarten, and break-
fast will not be served. If school dismisses early, all after-school activities will be cancelled. If school is called off at mid-day
and the weather clears up later in the day, we may attempt to play scheduled basketball games, etc. If this happens, info will
be announced on the radio and TV stations listed above.
If school is dismissed early during the day, someone will remain at the central office until all buses have checked in to make
sure everyone is accounted for. MOC-Floyd Valley buses have two-way radios for effective communication between drivers
and all school buildings.

Taking the extra necessary precautions to protect you and your family from getting sick is important as we
enter into the winter months. Washing your hands is the number one way you can protect your health and the
health of others. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, hand-washing is the “single
most important means of preventing the spread of infection.” By frequently washing your hands, you wash
away germs that you have picked up from other people, surfaces or from animals and their waste. Viruses can
live on your hands for hours, and washing your hands regularly is a proven way to decrease your chances of
getting sick.
Think about all of the things that you touched today — from the toilet to your keyboard. No matter what you
touched, you have come in contact with germs. It’s important to clean your hands before, during and after you
prepare food and before you eat. You should especially do so after using the bathroom, touching animals or
handling their waste, and when you’re around somebody who’s sick. Did you wash your hands after you went
to the bathroom today? A study found that 91 percent of adults say they always wash their hands after using a
public bathroom, but only 83 percent were observed doing so. Teenagers aren’t any better than adults: In a
survey, only 58 percent of teen girls and 48 percent of teen boys washed up after using the restroom. Addi-
tionally, only 32 percent of people say they wash their hands after coughing or sneezing. Although it's impos-
sible to keep your hands germ-free, washing your hands frequently can help limit the transfer of bacteria,
viruses and other microbes.
~Hand washing is as easy as 1..2..3~
Always wash your hands before:
Preparing food or eating
Treating wounds, giving medicine, or caring for a sick or injured person
Inserting or removing contact lenses
Always wash your hands after:
Preparing food, especially raw meat or poultry
Using the toilet or changing a diaper
Touching an animal or animal toys, leashes, or waste
Blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing into your hands
Handling garbage, household or garden chemicals, or anything that could be
contaminated — such as a cleaning cloth or soiled shoes.
In addition, wash your hands whenever they look dirty.

On December 15th, student athletes from MOC-Floyd Valley and Unity Christian High School
will again come together to compete on the hardwood. More importantly, members of both school communi-
ties will come together to make a difference in our area. In the past, this event has been referred to as the
“Pink-Out.” In order to more accurately portray the purpose of the event, the name has been changed to the
“Reach-Out.” All funds generated through the silent auction, taco feed, and t-shirt sales go to support local
families who are dealing with cancer or other serious illnesses. The funds are used to help pay for gas or
groceries, thus off-setting expenses for the affected families. Over 250 families have been helped through
Pink-Out/Reach-Out funds since the start.

Speech Coach Information and Fund-Raising Update
Please consider contributing to the Speech Boosters if you have not done so. In an effort to continue the
successful and growing speech program that MOC-Floyd Valley High School has traditionally maintained
and hopes to continue in the future (with 150 students involved in both programs), several options have
been approved to help supplement the speech program. The following are currently in the plan:
*Speech Boosters - $25 (or donation) per family for a year long membership
Many families have decided to join, but some have not yet contributed. There also have been some
alumni families of the speech program and other community members and relatives that have
supported the speech program by donating.
*Concession stand work – 2 basketball games for speech students and coaches to cover
November 30th and January 11th
*Parents’ Speech Night (donations accepted) – Monday, January 21st - 7:00 p.m.
