Ink Drawing… techniques…

Mark making with ink becomes a matter of dots, lines and space.

Artist examples: Notice how artist make areas of light, dark & all the ‘shades’ of grey.

Zentangle Animal Objective: Students will demonstrate skill in ink drawing by making a zentangle animal. Check yourself: Variety of lines & pattern Graduated pattern Balance of light, dark &

Seeing value…

When physically creating a lightness scale in this way one soon becomes aware that the perception of relative lightness is rather strongly dependent on background lightness (Figure 8.3). This effect of background lightness is called "crispening", and is a specific instance of simultaneous contrast, which tends to intensify lightness differences either side of the greyscale value of the background. The degree of illumination in which the scale is viewed also seems to strongly affect the apparent spacing of the values. http://www.huevaluechroma.com/081.php

Figure 8.3. Effect of background on perceived lightness. This lightness scale created in Photoshop may not be perfectly even, but where is the biggest jump? The phenomenon of "crispening" makes lightness intervals close to the background lightness look relatively great. http://www.huevaluechroma.com/081.php

Planning : 1. Make value scales: Stippling Hatching Cross hatching Stumbling Zentangle patterns

Your own patterns Keep in mind they need to change over space to create different values (shades of grey). Some need to contrast with the other patterns. Brainstorm as many ideas as you can.

2. Make thumbnail sketches of animals to plan composition. Draw from memory so that you simplify the animals. Then crop for a stronger composition. Think about how you will divide up the space for patterns.
