In Edinburgh, every November brings the 'Blast of Fiddles' everywhere, at the Queens Hall, the Kings Hall, Summerhall, in schools, on the streets, in bars and maybe even popping up in some surprising places! Fiddle 2013 solves the problem of what to do in late November. The nights are drawing in and the weather’s variable. It’s too early for Christmas shopping and too easy to stay at home. Fiddle 2013 has something for everyone. At the centre, two concerts at the Queens Hall, combining the best up and coming musicians with performers from the world stage. And the heartbeat of the festival is that there are so many things to do, see, join in, learn about, hear about, browse, shop, listen, dance, eat, drink, explore, walk, chill out, make friends, and renew auld acquaintances. The Festival spirit brings people together, from all nations, of all ages. Last year the Festival won the coveted ‘Event of the Year’ at the Scottish Trad Awards. Here is why .... The organisers say, ‘This is not mere entertainment, but life itself. A whole week-end of live music, evening concerts, late-night cabarets and day-time recitals. You don’t have to be a fiddler, although by the end of the week-end you might well want to be.’ So what would a whole week-end spent at Fiddle 2013 actually be like? A veteran of the event explains ..... ‘When you arrive at the Queens Hall around 7 on the Friday, already people have gathered and there’s a buzz about the place. There’s a welcome desk, CDs on sale, lots of information, and the bar is open. Then the concert begins. If you imagined a ‘fiddlers rally’ you might get a surprise; this is live music played by professionals. This year, two young Scottish bands, Rura and the Rua Macmillan Big Band. The music ranges from the spine-tingling through the foot-tapping to the downright get up and dance. The concert ends around 10. Already, a ceilidh has started round the corner; the White Sergeants are Dashing and the Willow’s been Stripped. Or stick around the Queens Hall, and the late night club, cabaret-style, starts, with some famous names, some surprises, and some up and coming players. Maybe better not stay too late…… is that the time?

Saturday morning, make for the Kings Hall over the road. It’s a big space, filled with stalls. Here you can browse for a wide range of things. In a corner, a bunch of people just got their instruments out and struck up a tune. Elsewhere, there are fiddles and other instruments for sale. Could you imagine that violin players needed so many accessories, bows, rosin, shoulder rests, tuners, strings, carrying cases? Stand near enough and eavesdrop on someone testing out an instrument they might buy. The stall holders know their stuff, proud of their craft. Nobody hurries; it’s a place to linger with a coffee and some home-made cake. Next up, go on the ‘Fiddle Walk’. The what? A guided tour through the streets of Edinburgh led by the great Perthshire fiddler, Pete Clark. Pete has no end of stories, and the walk finishes with a visit to a nearby bar where tunes are on tap (along with some other things). Saturday afternoon, back to the Queen’s Hall now, and all afternoon there are performances, with a different act every hour, and what a range, from established professionals, to up-and-coming players, and community groups. This is the kind of thing you can dip into; the audience comes and goes. Some of them will be joining in workshops, where they’ll learn tips and tricks from the artistes who are appearing. Only slow airs and no graces; these are performers you can get to know, sit down and play a tune with, or just listen to. In another room, there’s someone giving a talk about anything from fiddle maintenance to the history of the Strathspey (a variety of tune). Back to the Kings Hall for a quick look. That group of tune-players has become a full-fledged “session”; it looks like some of them have never moved from their seats. Is that one of last night’s star performers playing away with the rest of them?

Saturday evening is a bit like Friday only everyone’s that bit more relaxed. The Concert opens with some young musicians from local

schools whose playing is frighteningly good. Then Nova Scotia fiddler extraordinaire, Troy MacGillivray, and after the interval, this year’s top of the bill, often an international star, this year a seven piece band from Finland. And after the Concert, that choice of whether to hear more amazing music at the Festival Club or chill out at the bar. And still there are people playing tunes in odd corners. Nobody seems to organise this, it just happens. Sunday; arrive at the venue in the middle of the day, and realise that some people have already been in early, taking part in workshops. There are lots of youngsters around; they have their own programme of groups and classes throughout the week-end. Based on how well these kids play in the open sessions, that must be so as not to frighten the adult learners. Sunday afternoon, and there’s the same format as yesterday but different performers. Where do they all come from? These recitals are a bargain; six hours of live music. There are more talks, and the stalls are doing a good trade. There are arts and crafts too, so Christmas shopping is possible after all. And everywhere, people playing tunes. As the afternoon wears on, there is a gradual drift of people back to the main venue. Many in the audience are getting their instruments out; can you do that in the middle of a concert? The closing ‘Stramash’ involves anyone who can play getting up on the floor; seemingly there are a few tunes that everyone knows, quite a lot of tunes in fact. Some young players process, led by one of the performers who has become the Pied Fiddler. That’s a week-end like no other. On the way out, the biggest raffle you’ve ever seen has been drawn; prize or no, everyone’s a winner.’ www.scotsfiddlefestival.com www.facebook.com/scotsfiddlefest https://twitter.com/Scotsfiddlefest

Scotland prepares to celebrate St Andrews Day in musical style

A host of St Andrews Day events are planned around Scotland to celebrate our National Day with alternative national anthem composer Dougie MacLean of 'Caledonia' fame leading the musical events in the Capital. The eight-hour celebration of Scotland's culture will be staged in Edinburgh's historic Grassmarket as an early part of the City’s festive programme. Also appearing at the Grassmarket event will be Louis Abbott, frontman of Scottish indie favourites Admiral Fallow and two of Scotland’s leading folk outfits - Blazin’ Fiddles and Braebach. Events elsewhere in the country include a £20,000 three-day programme of free entertainment in Glasgow’s George Square, a new St Andrew’s Day celebration in Oban as part of its 10-day winter festival, which has won a £5000 grant, and five-days of festivities in East Lothian, under the banner of The Saltire, which have been allocated £18,000. Pete Irvine, managing director of Unique, said of the Grassmarket event: “This extraordinary celebration of Scottish celidih culture brings together some of our greatest traditional musicians to entertain the crowds on Scotland’s National Day. It’s the first time that we have celebrated St Andrew’s Day in this way in Edinburgh and is a great start to the city’s Christmas and Hogmanay programme of events.”

Culture secretary Fiona Hyslop said: “Scotland’s winter festivals bring people together to celebrate the very best of our culture, creativity and hospitality." www.scotland.org/celebrate-scotland/st-andrews-day

Far, Far From Ypres - the stage show which arose out of the double album of the same title, Songs Poems And Music Of World War I - will be presented in the main auditorium of the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall at the the first weekend of the Celtic Connections 2014 festival on Friday 17 January. Negotiations are ongoing between Ian McCalman (the musical director of the stage show) and other theatres throughout Scotland who have already expressed an interest in hosting the show. 2014 marks the 100th Anniversary of the commencement of World War I. Far, Far From Ypres was originally conceived as a celebration of World War One songs and poems, mainly Scottish, for the Greentrax album. It evolved into a stage production at the 2012 Celtic Connections Festival where it was described by the Festival Director, Donald Shaw, as “brilliant”. Another review (STV) said: “powerful solos, robust melody and beautiful harmony, told stories of excitement and hope, suffering and endurance, humour and escapism, fear and disillusionment, in the words of those involved in the horrors of the Western Front”. An Edinburgh Fringe concert review said: “an inspiringly convivial experience, where the audience joined the performers in choruses that echoed into the deep spaces of the hall… a standing ovation raised the roof of the Queen’s Hall for several minutes after the show had finished. It was a stirring end to a night honouring a terrible tragedy, one that left the entire audience moved and sombre, but strangely elated”. The show features the large screen projection of relevant images throughout the evening, enhancing greatly the audience’s understanding of the story unfolding before them. The format of the evening takes the form of two fifty-minute halves with an interval. It has a cast of ‘folk singing stars’, who remain on stage throughout the performance, singing the ‘trench’, ‘marching’ and Music Hall songs of the time. From that chorus, groups and soloists come to the middle of the stage and perform songs, both contemporary and traditional, about the Great War.

The narrator, Iain Anderson, brilliantly links the songs with stories about the hero of the show, Jimmy MacDonald, who was born in “any village in Scotland”. It tells of Jimmy’s recruitment and training then follows his journey to the Somme and back to Scotland. It would not be a Scottish tragedy without laughter, so there are also stories of humour and joy that take this production well away from the path of unremitting gloom. Written and directed by Ian McCalman, this production features 26 folk stars. Previous performances have included Dick Gaughan, Iain Anderson, Barbara Dickson, Sangsters, Ian Bruce, Siobhan Miller, Ian McCalman, Stevie Palmer, Stephen Quigg, Ragged Glory, Sineag MacIntyre, Soopna, Donald Hay, Drew Talbot, Dennis Wilson, Brian Miller, Tom Ward and a host of others. Ian McCalman wishes to encourage the use of the script by schools and colleges for educational purposes.

Knockengorroch World Ceilidh tickets go on sale

Castle Douglas : 22-25 May : www.knockengorroch.org.uk

The Knockengorroch World Ceilidh 2014 will take place from 22 to 25 May and organisers have just released a limited number of early bird tickets for sale. 2014 will be the renowned festival in the hills’ 17th year, and the family friendly event will feature a wide range of music including festival favourites, Scottish ‘up and comers’ and previously unbeknown acts from all corners of the globe. Described as a ‘miniature Glastonbury’ by critics, organisers claim the river valley in the Southern Uplands of SW Scotland to be the most unusual and beautiful off-the-beaten-track location in the country. The first names in the line-up are expected to be announced in January. Knockengorroch first presented the seminal outdoor roots music festival in Scotland in 1998 on Knockengorroch farm. As well as music, cabaret, spoken word, comedy and dance takes place across five venues, from the open air stage, custom built from locally sourced timber and turf roofed to tented structures large and small, to the Celtic Longhouse venue, a willow wattled lovingly recreated iron age dwelling.

The festival site was a populated village in ancient times and the festival aims to re-populate the valley for the 4 days of the festival. The highland cow head which makes up the festival's logo is a reminder of the ancient beasts that the people's lives depended on and that they worshipped, and the open stage's name the Bo Airigh stage, reflects this. There is a sauna, dedicated children's activities, workshops in arts, crafts, heritage and environmental subjects, fire shows, flash mobs, real ales, 'knocktails' and food stalls. Knockengorroch even has its own ale the 'Knock Ale' and its own chocolate 'chocengorroch'! The festival is run by a family who either live or grew up at Knockengorroch, and presided over by the family cows who witness the festival fun from the safe confines of the opposite river bank. www.knockengorroch.org.uk

How the Only Impact Made at Summer Music Festivals is Being Confined to the Stages

The attractions for traders attending music festivals are obvious – the opportunity to sell a large amount in a short space of time while experiencing some of the atmosphere and culture of the summers most unique and exciting entertainment events. Being back next year, better, possibly bigger, and certainly cleaner and greener is a common goal for traders such as outdoor caterers but how well they fit in with the festival environmental and waste recycling guidelines and ethos is now an important factor in deciding that. For the last 7 years Glastonbury Festival for example has been holding its own Sustainable Green Trader Awards to encourage all festival traders towards sustainability and minimising their environmental impact. In 2013 for example food traders could win a free full or a half price pitch at 2014s festival, and festivals goers were even invited to vote for their own clean, green and fair ‘People’s Choice’ trader. With attractive incentives and the possibility of losing a potentially lucrative pitch next year for very poor performance food traders especially at today’s festivals need to take the environmental aspect of their most obvious visible potential polluter i.e. their food packaging very seriously. John Haken of UK based specialist biodegradable and compostable food packaging suppliers WF Denny gives an insiders view on the pressures faced and resulting packaging choices being made by current UK festival traders. “Festival waste management targets, environmental incentives and guidelines, coupled with environmentally aware festival goers mean that festival food traders today are under pressure to not only produce good quality, great value food, but also to serve the food and manage their pitch in a responsible way using compostable, recyclable and biodegradable food packaging and utensils. All this and make a profit of course.

For these reasons one products that we’ve seen a big increase in demand for is ‘Black Card Disposable Trays’. These are 4 inch burger boxes, large baguette/hotdog boxes and open fast-food trays that are fully biodegradable and compostable. They have proved very successful this year for outside event caterers and have been used at Glastonbury, Creamfields, The Isle of Wight, Chichester, Leeds Festival and a host of other outdoor events. The food traders like them because they satisfy the regulations for the outdoor events and they are also cost effective so they don’t eat into the profits.” WF Denny also supply many other biodegradable packaging products to festival traders: “Biodegradable wooden knives, forks, skewers, our PLA cutlery range, biodegradable (hot) drinks cups with fitted recyclable sip thru lids, biodegradable cup sleeves and coffee cup carriers, biodegradable plates, platters and bowls and biodegradable hot food containers including takeaway trays, hinge lidded boxes, noodle pails, soup containers and ready meal boxes are all widely used at festivals these days. These products are now very much the norm and that’s a really good development. It’s a good thing for festival goers, the festival organisers and the environment.” www.wfdenny.co.uk Biodegradable cutlery

To make it easier for visitors the 15th Ullapool Guitar Festival in 2014 will be held from 3-5 October, moving to the first weekend of October.

Organiser Richard Lindsay said: "We have decided not to coincide the Festival with the start of the school holidays in an attempt to give people a wider choice of accommodation. Large numbers of B&B owners in the village close on the weekend of the start of the school holidays so by keeping the Festival on the first weekend in October we may also garner more local support for the event. Please put those dates in your diary now and if you have booked accommodation already make sure that your booking is for the correct dates. See you there!!!"

Richard continued: "If you made it to this years Festival then I hope you had as much fun as I did. The standard of musicianship was as usual very high, and there were numerous stand-out performances."

But no other instrument can compare with the piano for the power it gives the

individual player to create a whole many-voiced world of colours, lines, arguments, textures – and emotions. Few other instruments have proven themselves as multifaceted and versatile as this astounding creation of wood, metal, wire, felt and lacquer. That is why in November, we celebrate The Piano. www.glasgowmusic.co.uk Fiddle 2013 Edinburgh November 22-24 The Scots Fiddle Festival seeks to sustain and promote Scottish fiddle tradition and idioms, by providing a platform for performance, education, and participation.
