And in the Globe, two unforgettable “greats" paired togeth- er here for the first time: Craig Noel's favorite playwright, the irascible and fascinating George Bernard Shaw returns with his hilarious Misalliance, a play we've not done since my first season as Artistic Director in 1982, which introduced to this communi- ty as director, Associate Artist Paxton Whitehead, and this time, to be under the brilliant baton of Stephen Wadsworth, perhaps one of the country's greatest and most accomplished exponents of style, returning after his triumph last year with Moliere's Don Juan. Setting: Saturday, May 31, 1909; The Tarleton home in Surrey, EnglandThere will be one 15-minute intermission.

All the discussion and debate, adventure and misadventure, allianceand misalliance, of Shaw’s Misalliance takes place on one late springafternoon, May 31, 1909, at the country home of the wealthy, self-made, self-educated John Tarleton of Tarleton’s Underwear. The prin-cipal misalliance in question is that of Tarleton’s daughter Hypatiaand Bentley Summerhays, an overbred young man from a prominentfamily. Tarleton’s son Johnny is provoked to near violence when inter-rupted in his weekend relaxation by Bentley’s intrusive chatter.Hypatia and Mrs. Tarleton rescue Bentley, and Lord Summerhays,Bentley’s father, rescues Johnny. Hypatia and Mrs. Tarleton discusswhether love or successful companionship makes a marriage work —she has accepted Bentley because, unlike her other suitors, he hasbrains. Bentley returns with Tarleton, whose very active mind is fullof books, social idealism and pleasures of the flesh. Johnny andSummerhays join the company, and the men hold forth on their dif-ferent world views. Hypatia, party to all the conversational back andforth, finally explodes: she is tired of all the talk and yearns for some-thing to happen. Which it does. An aeroplane smashes into theTarleton’s greenhouse as all watch in horror. The pilot is the dashingJoey Percival, a school friend of Bentley’s, and his only passenger is afascinating Polish circus acrobat, Lina Szczepanowksa. Hypatia, con-tent that things have indeed started to happen, pursues Joey with rel-ish, while most of the men, fix their romantic attentions on Linawith various results. An intruder, hiding in the Turkish bath, over-hears Hypatia and Joey’s courting and then attacks Tarleton, bran-dishing a gun and accusing him of seducing and abandoning hisdead mother many years ago. Lina disarms the intruder, and Mrs.Tarleton takes the stranger under her wing, but he reveals the bur-geoning relationship between Hypatia and Joey, which causes ashowdown between parents and children — particularly Hypatia andTarleton, who finds it very difficult to accept the independent initia-tives of his daughter. Finally, when everything has been said, every-one sits down to dinner.

Our beloved Globe Guilders, the Theatre’s amazing auxiliary, will also enjoy a milestone in 2005, observing their GoldenAnniversary of providing invaluable service to the hearts and souls of the Company. DIANE SINOR: Exactly one hundred yearsago Misalliance was brewing in Shaw. Howdoes it reflect that first decade of the 20thcentury?

STEPHEN WADSWORTH: When QueenVictoria finally died, with the birth of the newcentury, England awakened to modernity. Itsidentity had been in the grip, for many years,of a sort of benign stranglehold that favoredthe moneyed or titled classes — empire, aris-

tocracy and commerce ruled. The new king, Edward VII, was considered asybarite and a roué by the old guard — he actually had, you know, affairs —and they despaired for the realm. But Edward was a huge breath of freshair, and within a few years the progressive Labor party was back in powerfor the first time since Shaw was a child. Change was inevitable, and withsocialists legislating, the erosion of the class system was picking up speed.It was a turning point for the national identity, and for diehard politicalmodernists like Shaw it was a joyful time, the beginning of an era rather thanthe end of one.

The play starts with the presumption that a penniless, ambitionlessaristocrat boy will marry a wealthy, fearless merchant-class girl (the “mis-alliance” of the title). By the time it’s over every presumption, of play-goers and characters alike, has been challenged — new ways of thinkingbulldoze old ones, the classes mix in ways unthinkable to the traditional-ists and delightful to the young, every socially dangerous idea has smashedinto the respectable drawing-room play. And not only is every modern ideaabout the contemporary English social contract flung across the stage, butit is flung with joy, that boundless enthusiasm for thinking ahead which isperhaps Shaw’s most distinctive and compelling gift. Misalliance sort of isthe Zeitgeist: it doesn’t reference the spirit of the era, it embodies that spirit,in every vivid word and intention.

DS: Shaw’s preface to the play is called Parents and Children, and it’s at leastas long as the play itself. Was Shaw saying that this was what the play wasreally about for him?

SW: Shaw’s obsession with the relations between parents and childrenwas undoubtedly rooted in his own story — a sense of parentlessness, offeeling disenfranchised from or not truly connected to his own parents,who were, moreover, alienated from each other. But virtually all his playstrade on parent-child tensions, and all the prefaces to his plays often roamfar afield of their plots. The parent-child quandary is, in Misalliance anyway, (cont. next page)

So he did some mental clowning in order to attractan audience. If he stood firmly with his feet on the groundon the platform he had no audience. If he stood with hishead on th floor and his feet in the air the public thought hemight deserve a laugh and even some attention. So, as adevoted missioner, he was ready to be also the agile moun-tebank and he found that the trick worked.”

a metaphor for the tension between theold and the new, a means to explore thecostly clash, of conservative and liberalworld-views, playing out in the nationalpsyche. And it’s not an abstract metaphor,it trades on the politics of family and sobrings the broader philosophical con-cerns of the play right down to earth andinto our practical, daily grind. The playchallenges England to change, and tohurry up about it too, and Shaw isn’t par-ticularly obliging in his demand. Neitherhe nor his younger characters are the leastbit interested in giving the old guard aneasy time of it. After sitting and listeningto men debate for most of Act 1, his young heroine, Hypatia, just stands upand announces that the play has to change, because it’s too much talk and toolittle action, and she dedicates herself to the task of breaking every rule pos-sible in the remaining act and a half. She’s had it. Shaw had had it. In the pref-ace to Man and Superman Shaw said, “It annoys me to see people comfortablewhen they ought to be uncomfortable, and I insist on making them think. Ifyou don’t like my preaching you must lump it. I really cannot help it.” I lovethat, it’s so lean and mean and unapologetic.

DS: The play doesn’t have a conventional plot, it’s more a series of encountersspilling forward and moving freely from one topic to another.

SW: Yes, it’s very free-form and associative. It looks like it’s going to be a well-made play — a nice, friendly, domesticated animal — but Shaw breaks downform in many ways in this play, so it’s an aptly iconoclastic vessel for his icon-oclastic message: it’s time to locate the new reality, and we have to break somerules to find it; we’re not going to play the expected scene now, we’re going tothrow it all over and have some fun. A noted social reformer, his playsdramatized social issues with articulate wit. In1925 he was awarded the Nobel Prize inLiterature. Born in Dublin in 1856, he leftschool at the age of 14 and continued his edu-cation through voracious personal study. The Old Globe is deeply saddened by the loss of long-time friend and benefactor J. Dallas Clark. Dallas served as a leader throughout this community, helping toshape modern-day San Diego through his community involvement and generosity.

Dallas joined The Old Globe’s Board of Directors as early as 1946, and served asan Emeritus Director since the 1990s. He played a key role in the RebuildingCampaign immediately following the Globe’s devastating fire of 1978, and in the

1980s, he served as one of the Chairs of the Theatre’s Advancement Campaign. In addition, Dallas helped establish the Globe’sEndowment Fund and, along with his wife Mary, made one of its charter gifts. Dallas and Mary have been among the Globe’s most stri-dent supporters and most valued advisors.

Those who knew Dallas remember a truly selfless man, whose charm and subtle humor put all those around him immediately at ease.He was always interested in others, and met all friends with his warm smile and a characteristic twinkle in his eye.

Dallas always shunned the spotlight, preferring to focus attention on San Diego’s many worthy non-profit institutions, including TheOld Globe, the San Diego Natural History Museum and the San Diego Zoo. Long-time friend and Globe Artistic Director Craig Noelnotes, “The Globe has lost a valued mentor. Dallas was an honorable man of such high principles. Louis G. SpistoExecutive DirectorLouis G. Spisto has been Executive Director of TheOld Globe since October, 2002. During his tenure,Spisto spearheaded the return of the Globe’sacclaimed Shakespeare Repertory Season and pro-duced several world-premiere plays and musicals,including the current Broadway musical Dirty RottenScoundrels. During the past two seasons, the organiza-tion has grown its subscription audience an unprece-dented amount, countering a trend in the non-profittheatre industry and resulting in the highest level ofattendance in over a decade. Prior to coming to theGlobe, Spisto served as the Executive Director ofAmerican Ballet Theatre in New York City. Whilethere, he increased ticket income and annual contri-butions for the organization by nearly 20 percent. Healso tripled the Ballet’s touring weeks and theresources devoted to education and training pro-grams. Spisto has also served as the President of theDetroit Symphony Orchestra, where he providedfundraising leadership and creative direction for theorchestra’s $60 million renovation project, andhelped dramatically increase ticket sales while initiat-ing several new series for the orchestra. Spisto estab-lished a reputation as a superb arts executive here inCalifornia, where he spent over ten years as theExecutive Director of the Pacific SymphonyOrchestra in Orange County. During his tenurethere, he tripled the orchestra’s annual budget, allwhile eliminating a prior deficit and successfullycompleting the orchestra’s first endowment cam-paign. In addition, he established a series of innova-tive recording projects with Sony Classical and over-saw a number of nationally recognized commission-ing projects. A strong advocate of arts education,Spisto built one of the largest and most respectedmusic training and outreach efforts. During hiscareer, Spisto has also served as Director ofMarketing for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestraand Director of Operations and Development for thePerforming Arts Center, UC Berkeley. He holds aMasters degree from the University of Wisconsin inArts Administration and a Bachelors of BusinessAdministration from the University of Notre Dame,and spent many years acting, directing and produc-ing plays and musicals throughout his student days,as well as in professional summer theater.

Craig NoelArtistic DirectorCraig Noel was first appointed director in 1939,directing 15 productions prior to World War II.Since then he has directed more than 220 playsof all styles and periods, and produced morethat 365 (over 40 of which were directed byWilliam Roesch from 1961 through 1976). Hisvision for The Old Globe during the past 65years has resulted in the establishment of theShakespeare Festival in the late ‘40s, the expan-sion to two theaters in the ‘50s, GlobeEducational Tours in the ‘70s and Teatro Metain the ‘80s. His recent directorial assignmentsinclude The Pavilion, Over the River and Through theWoods, Scotland Road, Springtime for Henry, Travelswith My Aunt, Voir Dire, Mister Roberts, Time of MyLife, Wonderful Tennessee, Mr. A’s Amazing MazePlays, The King of the Kosher Grocers, Morning’s atSeven, The White Rose, Shirley Valentine, And aNightingale Sang, The School for Scandal, The Road toMecca, Love’s Labour’s Lost, The Boiler Room, TheNight of the Iguana, and Intimate Exchanges. ELSE-WHERE: During the 1940s Noel served as dia-logue director for 20th Century Fox Studiosand was the former director of the Ernie PyleTheatre, Tokyo. Described by Variety as the emi-nence grise of San Diego theatre, Noel is one ofthe few San Diegans to have an entire year(1987) proclaimed in his honor, and to benamed one of San Diego’s “Living Treasures.”Additional honors include the Governor’sAward for the Arts; inclusion in The San DiegoUnion’s list of 25 persons who shaped SanDiego; 1985 Outstanding Alumnus of the Year;San Diego Press Club Headliner Award; a com-bined tribute from the Public Arts AdvisoryCouncil and San Diego County Board ofSupervisors (1984); Shiley Award for LifetimeAchievement (1999 Patté), Member, College ofFellows of the American Theatre. He is particu-larly proud of the following two honors repre-senting education and theatre: Honorary Doctorof Humane Letters, University of San Diegoand the annual Awards for Excellence in Theatrenamed in his honor by the San Diego TheatreCritics Circle.
