Lt. Col. Adolfo Espuelas Jr., commanding officer of the Army’s 73rd Infantry Battalion, said the encounter occurred after army soldiers responded on reports on the presence of NPA rebels in villages situated along the

boundaries of Malapatan town in Sarangani and Jose Abad Santos in Davao del Sur Saturday morning.

He said government troopers caught up with 25 heavily-armed rebels in Sitio Datal D’lag, Barangay Kulaman of Jose Abad San-tos town, where a two-hour firefight ensued.

After the encounter, the official said they recovered the bodies of three NPA reb-els who were only identified by local residents through aliases Marvin, Bobong and

Berting. He said they recovered

two M14 rifles, an M16 Armalite rifle, a handheld radio and assorted bullets from the slain rebels.

There were no casualties on the government side, he added.

Citing results of their initial verification, Espuelas said aliases Marvin and Bobong were allegedly team leaders of Squads 1 and 2, respectively, of the “Sentro de Grabidad Andoy” of the NPA’s Front 71 headed by

Kumander Brigol. As of Monday morning,

he said no one had come forward to claim the remains of the slain rebels, who were brought to General Santos City late Saturday by a Philippine Air Force chopper.

Espuelas said govern-ment troopers have started mopping operations with reinforcement from the army’s 1002nd Brigade un-der its Task Force Mulawin based in Malungon town in Sarangani province.

403rd Infantry Brigade honors fallen militiaas reported.

Prior to the encoun-ter, it received consistent reports coming from the local populace regarding the presence of medium size armed enemy forma-tions ranging from fifteen to twenty NPAs roaming in the area and conducting food foraging.

The Brigade acknowl-edged the heroic deeds bestowed by CAA Calimpi-tan a plain folk who volun-teered in joining the pool

of CAFGU and unselfishly offered ultimate sacrifice in the process in protecting his community against the repressive NPA.

CAA Calimpitan was once an NPA member op-erating in the area but sur-rendered to the government due to empty promises, hardship, fatigue, and hun-ger that he experienced while in the underground world.

“The deafening reports on the continued presence

of armed groups that poses serious threats to the lives of the people living in the area will be acted promptly and not be tolerated.”

While we are appealing to those affected residents for the inconveniencies, we are also working closely to the different concerned agencies to bring basic gov-ernment services nearer to the people especially in the countryside who are always exposed to danger posed by the CPP/NPA/NDF.

THINK a minute. Some parents can trace

their family back 300 years, but they don’t know where their children were last night.

A wise man said: “If fathers took their sons fishing when they were young, they wouldn’t have to go hunting for them when they’re older.”

It has also been stated: “There are no illegitimate children—only illegitimate parents.”

Just having children doesn’t make a man a father or a woman a mother.

One father admitted: “The thorns I’ve reaped are from the garden I planted.” It’s sad that some parents spend more time raising fruits and vegetables than they do raising their own children.

Jacqueline Kennedy

Focus on the family

Onassis concluded: “If you fail to do a good job raising your children, whatever else you do doesn’t matter much.”

No work is more im-portant than the work of raising our children to become happy, successful people.

The first doctor in his-tory to successfully per-form a heart transplant was the South African surgeon, Christian Barnard. But in his book, One Life, he tells about his failure as a

husband and father. Dr. Barnard had gone

away to America for many months doing his world-famous medical work.

He tells what happened when he finally went home to his family in South Af-rica: “It seemed like 100 years since I’d been home. I’d not written my wife and children in months, yet I was still shocked by my wife’s greeting.”

She asked: “Why did you come back?”

I could see there was no

longer a smile in her eyes. She said, “Don’t look

so surprised! We gave you up. We thought you were never coming back!” I said, “But I was building hearts.”

She replied bitterly, “No, you were building a family! That is, until you dumped it all on me. We no longer exist for you.”

At that moment, this bril liant heart surgeon knew that even he could not heal the broken hearts of his own family whom he failed.

Many of us have failed as a spouse or parent; but Jesus Christ will forgive you if you ask Him. Then ask Him to help you start changing and doing a bet-ter job of raising your children to become the happy, successful people they were born to be.

THE case of priests using pulpits to malign individuals or groups is not new. There is no direct explanation to this. Perhaps, some priests would just like to express pint up emo-tions. After all, priests are not saints or saintly. However, people always expect a priest to be discerning in actions and words. If one hears of a priest misbehaving in private or public, people would always react in disbelief. How can a priest do so? How can a priest be so ill mannered?

Nevertheless, while people believed that priests are individuals who are always forgiving, and compassion-ate, there are exceptions to the rule. Last week, reports and rumors about a priest in Cagayan de Oro who spreads the gospel of hate purportedly in his homily were frustrating. Local radio commentators took turns in lambasting the priest nefarious character.

If the reports were true, we believed the people of Cagayan de Oro do not deserve to have this priest in the Archdiocese. Consequently, it is incumbent upon the Archdiocese to investigate this incident. If the Archdiocese tolerates the attitude of this priest, it will

Gospel of hatesend wrong signals to the city’s predominantly Christian community. Allowing this priest to continue his tirade – personal or otherwise – against elected city officials is unfair to city electorates, too.

Well, we do not want to be cynical here. Nonetheless, the people want Catholic priests to show good judgment and good taste when hearing masses. If priests are al-lowed to display offensive character in mass services, then, it is but fair for churchgoers to denounce such objectionable traits. Perhaps, that was what happened when city residents questioned the propriety of the priest’s attitude last week.

Anyway, mediocre people may have appreciated the priest’s obnoxious homily. Yet, we do not think all those people who heard that mass were mediocre. Otherwise, nobody would have complained of the offensive hom-ily. We believed there were kids who heard the mass together with their parents, too. The priest’s undesirable homily would have likely leave an indelible imprint in the minds of the children.

With honest candor, whomever the priest involved here is undeserving of the vocation. It is lamentable that learning the ways and lives of Christian values in hermitic life would turn to naught in the blink of the eye. React: [email protected]

Double BarrelBy VIC A. ENDRIGA After Sendong, what now Mayor Emano, Sir? EXCEPT for the Surigao provinces, the entire Min-danao were practically ty-phoon free some 30 or 40 years ago. Yes, in the 1960s and 1970s, the traditional ty-phoon belt were the Surigao provinces, Bohol, Southern Leyte, Samar, Catanduanes, Camarines Sur, Polillo Is-land and Casiguran in Que-zon and Batanes.

Those were the years when massive logging ac-tivities were undertaken in the Davao provinces, Agusan, Lanao, Bukidnon and Cotabato. Today, the entire Mindanao is expe-riencing with regularity such calamities as typhoon, flooding and mudslides. Climate change is exacting revenge on the people as a result of the massive abuse

of the environment. The recent flooding in

Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro City courtesy of typhoon Sendong should have taught us some bitter lessons. The floods were brought about by the bald mountains above the two cities. The mountains failed to absorb the volume of water poured in the area. The result: thousands were killed while many more were harmed or rendered homeless.

Now there is a move by the government led by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and

even the Philippine Na-tional Police to undertake simultaneous planting of trees. This is a fine move and must be supported by everyone.

And to the public offi-cials and people of Cagayan de Oro, this writer suggests that they should act quickly and join hands in restoring the mangrove areas in its shoreline and that should include Isla the Oro and the nearby small islets. The mangrove trees will not only serve as typhoon and wave cover for the city, it will also revive the natural habitat for fish and other

sea resources.Specifically, Mayor Vi-

cente Emano should start working closely with the DENR and maybe visit the town of Prieto Diaz in Sor-sogon and learn how the Bicolanos in said province were able to restore their mangrove areas. We are certain he will be glad to learn that fishermen in the said town are happy with the improved riches of their sea.

Some 600 hectares of mangrove areas in Prieto Diaz town have been fully rehabilitated and restored to its old grandeur. According to the DENR, a hectare of mangrove can help produce one ton of fish per year.

With a restored man-grove, all fish varieties will have a sanctuary closer to the people and well main-tained mangrove areas will help ensure the continued abundance of fish and other sea foods. This means

THE Xavier University (XU) donated 500 chairs to the Lumbia Central School Southwest District in Cagayan de Oro.

The chairs were turned over Monday (June 25) at the school’s covered courts.

Mr. Roel R. Ravanera, chairperson of the XU Lum-bia Resettlement Project, delivered the turn over message.

Dr. Daisy Lu, Master Teacher II, said “I cannot explain in words how happy I am” as she received the chairs together with some of her pupils.

The giving of chairs is XU’s response to the short-age of classroom facilities happening in Lumbia Cen-tral School due to the influx of new enrollees.

A large number of these enrollees are from Xavier Ecoville, the XU-led reset-

This school year, there are more than 800 new en-rollees, the highest number Lumbia Central School has ever had.

The teachers admit to have not been able to an-ticipate the sudden surge

of new students. They are holding emer-

gency classes which start as early as six in the morning while some last up to six in the evening.

Right now, there are as much as 70 students per class, with nine new sections added in the grade levels. This scenario makes the

existing classrooms insuffi-cient to the current number of students.

Even the school library is being used as a classroom to accommodate the big classes. Lumbia Central School is in need of more classrooms to facilitate and ensure the quality learning of its students.

fishermen no longer need to venture into the high seas such as the Scar-borough Shoals or the West Philippine Sea.

Actually officials like Mayor Emano, including governors, should strive harder to improve both the forest and mangrove covers of their localities. If they do not know how to start it, all they need to do is to ask the help of the DENR or seek the assistance of mayors and governors with an already ongoing or successful reforestation and mangrove rehabilitation projects.

On this note, this corner would like to commend the effort of Quezon Gov. JayJay Suarez to simultaneously plant 2 million mangrove “propagules” in mangroves in 31 of the province’s 41 towns on June 30. This is significant because there is no province that have under-taken as big project such as this one. We learned that the simultaneous planting will initially restore 200 hectares of denuded mangrove ar-eas. The one-day planting activities is well planned, including the careful selec-tion of mangrove varieties with a high percentage of survival and no less than 22,000 participants have been marshaled to ensure that no less than two million propagules will be planted on June 30.

We have not heard in recent years of a mangrove rehabilitation project such big as this one. The young governor of Quezon was re-cently quoted in media that the project will ultimately cover more than 1,000 ki-

that Canhatan’s group was an object of military and police manhunt in con-nection with the raid of Binicalan Patrol Base last May 30, 2012 wounding four civilians.

Recovered from the group were one NPA sweat shirt, three Cellphones owned by a militiamen, and some belongings from Km 41 Patrol Base. The seized items would serve as evidence of their in-volvement in the raid of Binicalan Patrol Base, the report added.

The army turned over the suspects to the municipal police station of Talacogon for appropriate filing of charges.

Prior to filing of charges, the army initially brought the suspects to the 26th IB’s headquarters for pre-sentation to civilians and militiamen who survived during the raid at Binicalan Patrol Base.

Th e survivors of the Bini-calan raid positively identi-fi ed Canhatan as the leader of suspected communist rebels in the Binicalan raid, the army report said. CD

has produced about three-quarters of the increase in carbon dioxide from hu-man activity over the past 20 years.

In The Encyclopedia of Earth, Dr. Maggie L. Walser—who works for the US Senate Commit-tee on Energy and Natu-ral Resources—wrote that agriculture contributes 14% of total GHG emis-sions worldwide. And rice farming contributes a fair amount of methane, which is produced when bacteria decomposes organic matter.

Methane is acknowl-edged as the second most powerful GHGs produced by human activity after carbon dioxide but 25 times more potent at trapping heat than carbon dioxide.

According to Reiner Wassmann, a biologist spe-cializing in climate change at the IRRI in Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines, meth-ane accounts for about 20% of the enhanced greenhouse effect and rice farming con-tributes about 10% of this.

“On a global scale, rice farming is just a minor contributor to global warm-ing. But on a national level in many Asian countries such as the Philippines, it is a substantial source of GHGs,” he said. Because of this, Wassman said it is very important for rice farmers to do their bit in mitigating climate change.

National security concern:

The Washington-based International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) forecasted in a study that there will be a 15% decrease in irrigated rice yields in developing countries and a 12% increase in rice prices as a result of climate change

by 2050.The Manila-based Asian

Development Bank (ADB) said in an earlier study that rice production in the Phil-ippines will decline by as much as 75% if the coun-try is not quick enough to adapt to and put in place safeguards against climate change.

According to the study, decline in rice production will start in 2020. Severe weather conditions induced by a rapidly changing cli-mate will spawn more and more typhoons, storms, and other disastrous natural phenomenon like Tropical Storm Washi.

Washi buf feted the Northern region of Mind-anao in the southern Philip-pines on December 16, 2011, leaving the region’s agricul-ture sector with damages estimated at PhP305,715,931 (US$7,200,321.46), accord-ing to the National Disaster Risk Reduction Manage-ment Council.

The Beijing-based Xin-hua News Agency, quoting Agriculture Undersecretary Antonio Fieta, reported in October 2011 that typhoons Nesat and Nalgae, which lashed the Philippines in September and October, re-spectively, inflicted a PhP12 billion (US$282,485,589.44) damage to Philippine agri-culture; the bulk or PhP11 billion (US$258,944,120.66) came from damage on rice crops.

With at least 20 typhoons visiting the Philippines an-nually, the chairperson of the Philippine Senate Com-mittee on Climate Change, Loren Legarda, said that climate change is a clear and present danger and that “it is a national security concern.”

WIMBLEDON, England––Racket bag slung over her shoulder, resignation writ-ten across her face, Venus Williams weaved through fans milling about on the sidewalks that players must traverse to get from Court 2 to the Wimbledon locker rooms.

The 32-year-old Wil-liams had just absorbed a lopsided first-round loss at the Grand Slam tourna-ment she once ruled, a poor performance that raised questions about how much longer she will keep playing tennis while dealing with an energy-sapping illness.

hitting partner, David Witt, was saying: ``It’s tough to watch sometimes. I think everybody sees it. I don’t know what else to say.’’

Looking lethargic, and rarely showing off the pow-er-based game that carried her to five Wimbledon titles and seven majors overall, Williams departed meekly Monday with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat against 79th-ranked Elena Vesnina of Russia. Only once before - as a teenager making her Wim-bledon debut in 1997 - had Williams exited so early at the All England Club.

She hadn’t lost in the first round at any Grand Slam

tournament in 6 1/2 years. Still, Williams said she’ll be at the London Olympics next month and is ``planning’’ to be back at Wimbledon next year.

``I feel like I’m a great player,’’ Williams said, sounding a tad like someone trying to convince herself.

Her loss, in her first match since a second-round ouster at the French Open, was part of an odd Day 1, even if the true tournament favorites in action won eas-ily: Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova. Among those sent home were sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych, the 2010 runner-

up at Wimbledon; 11th-seeded John Isner; No. 16 Flavia Pennetta; and No. 18 Jelena Jankovic, who was rather easily beaten 6-2, 6-4 by Kim Clijsters, a four-time major champion who has been beset by injuries in her last season on tour and, like Williams, is unseeded.

Other seeded losers: No. 23 Andreas Seppi, No. 24 Marcel Granollers and No. 27 Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, who was upset by 100th-ranked Jamie Hamp-ton of the United States 6-4, 7-6 (1).

Truth be told, the biggest surprise might very well have been the way Isner - the highest-ranked American man - blew a match point, wasted a two-sets-to-one lead, dropped a tiebreaker on grass, and bid a 6-4, 6-7 (7), 3-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5 farewell to Wimbledon in the first round against 73rd-ranked Alejandro Falla of Colombia.

AMERICAN swimming icon Michael Phelps confirmed Sunday that he will swim the 400-meter individual medley at the US Olympic swimming trials.

Phelps, winner of the event at the past two Olympics, had said after the 2008 Beijing Games that he wouldn’t swim it again in any major competition.

Phelps will set a match-up against Ryan Lochte in the 400m medley on Monday, which is the first event of the eight-day

meeting.Phelps holds the world record in the

400m medley at 4:03.84, set winning the gold in Beijing. Lochte settled for bronze in Beijing behind Phelps and Hungarian Laszlo Cseh, but claimed the world title in Shanghai worlds last year.

“I love racing against him,” Lochte said. “He’s one of the hardest racers in the world. He’ll go toe-to-toe with you
