CAGAYAN de Oro City––The International Organiza-tion for Migration (IOM) had distributed P1.3 mil-lion worth of badly-needed Shelter Repair Kits (SRKs) to 205 families whose homes have been damaged by the deluge brought by Tropical Storm Washi (local name: Sendong) nine days before Christmas day last year.

Each beneficiary-family received P7,000 worth of SRK from the IOM.

The distribution of the SKR took place at the Ma-canhan covered court.

“Kini nga mga matery-ales nga gihatag sa IOM igo-igo lang gyud nga makapatindog mi pagbalik sa among gamay’ng payag (These materials given by IOM is just enough for us to construct a small house),” said Danilo Oponi.

IOM, which was es-tablished in 1951, is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmen-tal, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. It is dedicated to promot-ing humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by provid-ing services and advice to governments and migrants.

IOM works to help en-sure the orderly and humane management of migration, to promote international cooperation on migration issues, to assist in the search for practical solutions to migration problems and to provide humanitarian assistance to migrants in need, including refugees

and internally displaced people.

As the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) “Cluster” lead agency for Camp Coordination

and Camp Management (CCCM) in Natural Di-sasters, IOM immediately deployed teams to assess needs in evacuation centres, displacement sites and other

affected communities days after TS Washi devastated Cagayan de Oro City and neighboring Iligan City.

IOM also participated in a joint assessment mis-

sion with government line agencies led by the Office of Civil Defense and the Mindanao Humanitarian Team (MHT).

At present, IOM has distributed to the Sendong Survivors a total of P11 million worth of SRKs aside from other relief, emergency and humanitarian assistance since last year.

Fernandez in Barangay Doongan, Butuan City and in Barangay Valentina in La Paz, Agusan del Sur.

He also added that they already filed a case against Fernandez in violation of PD 1866 as amended by RA 9156 (Illegal Possession, Acquisition or Disposition of Firearms and Ammunitions.

Jesus Christ made it very clear that we already know where we’re going after we die, since it’s only now that we can choose where we’ll live after we die.

He warns us that it will be too late after we die to choose or change our mind.

Jesus said there are only

two choices: to completely believe Him and live His way everyday, or, to keep living our own way. Heaven or hell.

Jesus said there’s no in-between place for nice, good people who won’t ask for His gift of forgiveness and live for Him every day. None of us is perfect.

We’ve all done some things wrong that we need

Jesus to forgive us for and start changing in our char-acter and way of living.

So we don’t need to talk to the dead to find out about life after death.

Jesus Christ has already told us the truth and every-thing we need to know to go where we want to live after we die—together with Him and His true family in heaven.

So for your own peace of mind and safety, won’t you ask Jesus to forgive you for living your own way before it’s too late?

Then ask Him to take full charge of your heart and help you start living His way every day, for the rest of your life.

TODAY is Maundy Thursday. Also known as ‘Holy Thursday,’ Maundy Thursday is the name given to the day when Jesus celebrated the Last Sup-per or ‘Passover’ with His disciples. For Christians, two significant events took place on Maundy Thursday.

One of the significant events on Maundy Thursday was the celebration of the Last Supper of Jesus and His disciples. During the Last Supper, Jesus took bread and wine to sym-bolize His Blood and Body. The disciples partook of the bread and wine as witnesses of the faith. The Last Supper was the origin of the Holy Communion where Christian churches observed until today. On Maundy Thursday, most Christian churches hold special com-munion services in memory of Jesus Last Supper with His disciples.

The second important event on Maundy Thursday was Jesus washing the feet of His disciples as an act of humility and service. Today, Christian churches around the world still practice the washing of the feet on Maundy Thursday as a symbolism of Christian love, service and humility.

The word Maundy comes from a Latin word that means ‘command.’ Jesus commanded His disciples that they should love and serve one another with humility. There is a brewing issue on whether a Christian should

observe Maundy Thursday since the Bible neither com-mands nor forbids Christians to observe it.

However, the Bible is clear that Maundy Thursday reminds either Christians or non-Christians of the values of love and service with humility. Certainly, service with humility is a value that a person must observe in dealing with his neighbors.

Christ teachings of humility and service to fellow-men are the values that today’s leaders are lacking. There are few leaders, however, that observed Holy Week in the company of their constituents. These lead-ers characterized the teaching of Christ’s service with humility on Maundy Thursday. This is in contrast to some, if not most, leaders who spent their Holy Week in the comfort of luxurious vacations.

More often, it would be unlikely of an elected of-ficial staying to serve constituents while at the same time observing Holy Week. Yet, Cong. Bambi Emano, 2nd District, Misamis Oriental, is just doing things unusual to most elected public officials. Instead of spending his time in vacations elsewhere, the young Emano opt to make a round of his district.

Every Holy Week, Bambi goes around to confer with his constituents. He wants to make sure that basic ser-vices reach them. Bambi typifies a humble legislature who serves his constituents in the humility of Christ. He is a leader that leaders of Misamis Oriental’s future must emulate. To Bambi, let your tribe flourish.

“THE Judiciary has been at the receiving end of continued and relentless attacks on its indepen-dence, from the media-bashing to budgetary cuts and impeachment. All these have only one purpose, and that is to create a compliant and malleable judiciary.”

This was the message from no less the Chief Justice Renato Co-rona who is the trajectory of the impeachment complaint.

These very strong words issued by the Supreme Court of the land are a warning to our democracy. If the masses that compose our majority following the theory of a democracy are to be adhered to, we are doomed.

The masses compose the uninformed, many of the poorly educated, those who refuse to be body-politic and are nonchalant to these developing issues, are headed for the dictates of a singular power belonging to the oli-garchs, the hacienderos, the warlords, if not the headless anarchical communists, the Makati Business Club? or even the media barons now controlling public opinion.

It is interesting to note that media compliment of the surveys now even dictate the voice of the people––who in reality are unaffected by all the politics trying to survive and make a living on a daily basis. While the assumptions are correct of the Chief Justice unless his credibility and integrity are totally destroyed with a conviction from the all-powerful and supreme impeachment court, our freedoms as we know it may be lost, accordingly. Does

this not scare you at all? The absolute power will be of that of the executive. A martial law in disguise, as reiterated by the CJ!

As for the Senator-Judges who have pointed out in multiple interviews with the media have admitted; the power of public opinion has due sensitivities and influence towards their re-election bids making them vulnerable to mob rule over legalities which is allegedly the basis for right or wrong.

I have always pointed out that the majority rule con-trols our countries politics and economics. The question is who controls the majority? As for the impeachment trial, where does rule of law dictate? But isn’t this what the all-powerful and supreme Senator-Judges pledged to in their oath on the onset of the trial of the year.

Imbued personal interests seem to prevail over good of country and of law. If and when one day the majority will realize the manipulation, this will ignite civil unrest unknown of any Spring that has taken place.

By then and only if hunger and freedoms are curtailed, will a people react towards injustices that hopefully will correct the crookedness? That which will be realized and it always has a way of rearing its head, eventually or otherwise, will cause the downfall of the traitors of our country. Our leaders who have become puppets of our media drivers who pose as patriots who promote the crab mentality of the idiots have held this country back since the 60s.

We would have been better off with the Americans on hind sight. The impoverished and the poor are the

MAMBAJAO, Camiguin - Known to many for its spectacular wonders, be it in the array of finest foods, fruits, waters and people, Camiguin is but a tourist perfect destination.

The island receives flock of local and foreign tour-ist all year round and the Lenten season is among its peak period of the year,

After more than 30 years, “Panaad in Camiguin” still continues to draw huge numbers of pilgrims and tourist alike.

It is a religious activity that was started by a hand-ful of islanders in the 80’s and has found its place the region’s annual calendar of top tourist come-ons.

“Panaad” is a Cebuano term which means a reli-gious vow of sacrifice to take the 64-kilometer walk around the island-province, highlighted with an uphill walk in Mt. Vulcan where the 14 Stations of the Cross are located.

The penitent walk nor-mally commences immedi-ately after visitors sets foot on Benoni Port in the town of Mahinog. The crowd then

goes towards Mambajao, and then to Catarman town where the Mt. Vulcan climb awaits each devotee, a never-miss part of the Panaad, then sets off again until they reach back the place to where they have started.

Labajo said she has an edge over her neighbors because her husband is a construction worker and is also doing carpentry works so it will be easy for them to repair their partially damaged house with IOM’s SRK.

IOM, which serves as the co-lead with the DSWD in the IASC Camp Coordina-tion and Camp Management (CCCM) cluster, is cur-rently improving conditions in evacuation centres and

transition sites by providing privacy partitions, bed kits, latrines, bathing cubicles, multi-purpose halls and cooking counters, aside from distributing SRKs and essential non-food relief items to displaced families to allow them to leave evacuation centres and return to their homes.

Recently, IOM com-pleted the construction of 75 bunkhouses in the Lumbia relocation site. The project provided short-term employment to almost 200 people from evacuation cen-tres and host communities through a cash-for-work program. (Bong D. Fabe)

EcoVille Camp Manager Brian Lustre of the Interna-tional Organization for Mi-gration (IOM) said that the 7th Batch were composed of 25 families who took shelter at the Xavier Heights covered court; 10 families from the West City Central School; 1 family from the Provincial Capitol ground; 5 families from Tambo; 1 family from Camaman-an; 1 Crusher family; 1 family

from Patag; 1 family from Barangay 24; 3 families from Lapasan; 6 families from Pasil, Kauswagan; 5 families from Macabalan; and 1 family from City Cen-tral School.

A total of 49 children aged 0 to 19 were among those who were moved from the temporary shelters to the bunkhouses at EcoVille.

Merry Rose Mejia, 40, who is wheelchair-bound because of polio, said that she now can breathe freely.

“Feeling nako makag-inhawa na kog dako, dili pareho atong naa pa kita sa tent nga murag huot kaayo akong ginhawa (I feel that I can freely breath now unlike when I was still at the tent where I felt I can’t breathed),” she said.

She said that unlike in the temporary evacuation center at the West City Cen-tral School where she and her husband and 3 small children evacuated at the height to Tropical Storm Washi on the night of De-cember 16, 2011, she feels secure at the Xavier Ecoville.

“Didto sa tent, mahad-lok man kita kung unsay mahitabo panahon sa atong paghinanok sa gabii. Diri, at least plastar ug secure kita (At the tent, we were afraid what might happen while we were sleeping at night. Here, at least we are secure),” she added.

Ruperto Misteriola, 67, and Erasto Mabaylan Jr., 51, whose houses at Isla Puntod in Barangay Balulang were washed out by TS Washi expressed gratefulness that their families were among those chosen to be trans-ferred to EcoVille.

Mabaylan said in the vernacular that “we cannot but accept the offer extended to our family to transfer to EcoVille.

Although it is a little bit far from our source of livelihood, at least there we can have a semblance of a normal life in a com-munity unlike here in the evacuation center” as his hands and eyes sweep the surroundings at the Xavi-er Heights covered courts where he brought his family

Mabaylan is a buko ven-dor and moonlight as a con-struction worker whenever there is an opportunity in order to augment his meagre income from selling buko.

THE GOVERNMENT has assured stakeholders that the power shortage in Mindanao is being addressed.

Department of Energy (DoE) Undersecretary Jose-fina Patricia Asirit said that there is no power shortage in the island. Her assertion ran in contrast to cities like Cotabato, General Santos, Kidapawan and Zamboanga provinces where there are power outage.

“The DoE Secretary is biting the bullet here... un-popular decisions have to be made to solve the power situation in Mindanao,” she said.

to the problem, she said the government is set to revive the operation of the 100-MW Iligan Diesel Power Plant (IDPP), which was shutdown since 2010.

The power plant also needs clearance from the

Commission on Audit (CoA) before it resumes operation.

Among northerners, those in the Ilocos Region or the Cagayan Valley, this is the Pasion Ni Apo Jesus, which remains recited or sung in the traditional beat from sunrise to round 10 pm.

The chant-like song, with or without guitar-strumming believers, was imported from Spanish mis-sionaries, handed down from generation to genera-tion in this deeply religious country of nearly 100 mil-lion people.

The Pabasa gives the believers the opportunity to meditate on the passion, the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Theologians say the Pas-sion of the Lord was com-posed in the 17th century by Spanish missionaries, which adapted the European biblical tradition to the oral and melodic traditions of the native-born Filipinos.

But the Passion has uprooted itself from the Spanish language, recited while the Philippines was under Spanish colonizers for nearly four centuries before Filipinos quickly adapted themselves to the lifestyle of Hollywood and, briefly, the taste of sushi and tempura during the Japanese occupation in the 1940s.

Many Filipinos eventu-ally sought out a version close to their hearts and many, like those in the north of the country, translated the Spanish language Pas-sion of the Lord to the Iluko language, the lingua franca of the north zone.

According to research-ers, the first version outside of the Ilocos region and written in the Tagalog lan-

guage dates back to 1704.Researchers say this was

made by Gaspar Aquino de Belen, a native of Batangas, then in the service of the Jesuits in Manila.

It was titled Mahal na Passion ni Jesu Christong Panginoon Natin na Tola (The poem of the Blessed Passion of Jesus Christ our Lord).

Another known version of the Pasyon the “Casay-sayan nang Pasiong Mahal ni JesuCristong Panginoon Natin na Sucat Ipag-alab nang Puso nang Sinomang Babasa” (The History of the Passion of Jesus Christ our Lord that will set afire the heart of whosoever reads it), has been published by an unknown writer in 1814.

The text, which starts with few stanzas about the Creation of the World and ends with some words about the Apocalipses of Juan, continues to be used to date among the Tagalogs.

He said the DENR would still rely on the cooperation and support of the people to stop illegal logging in their area.

“There is no doubt that timber poachers can some-times elude the DENR op-eratives nevertheless with the support of the people they may not succeed.” said Sibbaluca.

The DENR off icials made a round of visit at the different forest moni-toring checkpoints along the Maharlika Highway and the Agusan River and reminded personnel to be alert, awake and enthusi-astic about transporting

illegal logging products in their area.

Sibbaluca also conferred with the Philippine Army Battalion Commanding Of-ficers in Surigao del Sur and Agusan del Sur and also the Philippine National Police officials about service per-sonnel assistance support when the situation warrants.

“We always thank the Philippine Army and the PNP for their all-out sup-port to the campaign of the DENR against illegal logging,” he said.

Last year the DENR-13 has confiscated a total of 5,250 cubic meters of illegal logs and 383,415 board feet of illegally-cut lumber and flitches. The DENR filed 23 cases with violation of PD 705 at the Environmental Court against illegal log-gers and timber poachers in Caraga Region.

Since Executive Order No. 23 took effect on Feb-ruary 1, 2011 chainsaws, bulldozers, graders and all other logging tools and implements are now off-limit in natural and residual forests nationwide.

Sibbaluca said the EO 23 issued by President Aquino declared a moratorium on the cutting and harvesting of timber in the natural and

residual forests, and the creation of an anti-illegal logging task force.

Environment and Nat-ural Resources Secretary Ramon J. P. Paje also gave instructions to all DENR regional executive direc-tors to pull out of all log-ging/cutting and hauling equipment from natural and residual forests after 28 days from its imposition.

Sibbaluca said the in-struction which he gave to all CENR officers to pull out of any logging/cutting and hauling equipment from all natural and residual forests remained enforced to en-sure that no further timber harvesting shall be done following the imposition of the logging moratorium.

He said the acceptance and processing of new as well as renewal or extension of, integrated operation plans, annual work plans or resources use permits in all natural and residual forest has been also sus-pended in accordance with the DENR Memorandum No.52 issued by Secretary Paje The memorandum has also limited the processing of application permits to forest tenure holders within their plantation sites only. MISAMIS Occidental––Provincial legislators under Vice Governor Henry Oaminal are backing the plan of the two electric cooperatives (ECs) operating in the province to buy additional load from Therma Marine, Inc. (TMI), a subsidiary of the Aboitiz Group of Companies.

The ECs––Misamis Occidental 1 Electric Coop-erative (MOELCI 1) and MOELCI 2––have yet to get the “go-ahead” of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) in regard to its plan to acquire additional load of 3 megawatts from TMI to cushion the impact of power shortage in Misamis Occidental.

Provincial legislators have invited officials of the Napocor and NGCP, including the two ECs, apparently to explain the increasing power load curtailment.

Napocor and NGCP representatives admitted they were helpless saying they only rely solely on how the government would address the power shortage follow-ing the approval of the Epira Law or the Energy Power Industry Reform Act of 2000 and the establishment of Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management (PSALM).

Senior officials of the MOELCI 1 and 2 said they are now asking the ERC to let TMI grant their load contract but said it would mean an additional P1.30 per kilowatt hour increase in electricity.

The Napocor and NGCP together with other gov-ernment power assets to include the Agus and Pulangi Hydro Energy Power Plants, SPPC in Sarangani province, WMPPC in Zamboanga City, Geo-Thermal in Cotabato City, STEAG in Misamis Oriental, TMI Power Barges, are producing only 1,085 MWs of energy.

Today’s energy demand in Mindanao has reached to 1,280 MWs and this would mean that more or less 200 MWs are needed to be back in shape.

Iway added that the pro-visional fare hike will be in effect while the LTFRB deliberates on the “main” petition for a P2 fare hike.
