CAGAYAN de Oro City––The International Organiza-tion for Migration (IOM) had distributed P1.3 mil-lion worth of badly-needed Shelter Repair Kits (SRKs) to 205 families whose homes have been damaged by the deluge brought by Tropical Storm Washi (local name: Sendong) nine days before Christmas day last year.

Each beneficiary-family received P7,000 worth of SRK from the IOM.

The distribution of the SKR took place at the Ma-canhan covered court.

“Kini nga mga matery-ales nga gihatag sa IOM igo-igo lang gyud nga makapatindog mi pagbalik sa among gamay’ng payag (These materials given by IOM is just enough for us to construct a small house),” said Danilo Oponi.

Oponi said he is very thankful to IOM for its help and that he is very happy

that despite the tragedy, humanitarian and aid agen-cies such as IOM are there to help him and others like him get back on their feet.

IOM, which was es-tablished in 1951, is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmen-tal, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. It is dedicated to promot-ing humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by provid-ing services and advice to governments and migrants.

IOM works to help en-sure the orderly and humane management of migration, to promote international cooperation on migration issues, to assist in the search for practical solutions to migration problems and to provide humanitarian assistance to migrants in need, including refugees

and internally displaced people.

As the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) “Cluster” lead agency for Camp Coordination

and Camp Management (CCCM) in Natural Di-sasters, IOM immediately deployed teams to assess needs in evacuation centres, displacement sites and other

affected communities days after TS Washi devastated Cagayan de Oro City and neighboring Iligan City.

IOM also participated in a joint assessment mis-

sion with government line agencies led by the Office of Civil Defense and the Mindanao Humanitarian Team (MHT).

At present, IOM has distributed to the Sendong Survivors a total of P11 million worth of SRKs aside from other relief, emergency and humanitarian assistance since last year.

“Pasalamat ko’g dako sa IOM kay nakatabang gyud sila sa mga pobre (I am very thankful to IOM for their help),” said Wilma Sabuero, whose house was partially damaged when TS Washi struck on the night of December 16, 2011.

Myrna Labajo, like oth-er beneficiaries, received 10 plywoods, 5 pieces of 2X4wood, 15 pieces of 2X2, 3 kilos of nails, a hammer, saw and roof sealant.

BUTUAN City––Personnel of the Criminal Investiga-tion and Detection Group (CIDG) in Caraga region conducted two separate operations which resulted to the confiscation of high powered firearms allegedly owned by Pedro Francisco O. Fernandez in Barangay Doongan, Butuan City and in Barangay Valentina in La Paz, Agusan del Sur.

Armed with search warrants, police opera-tives seized said firearms inside the house leased by Fernandez and confiscated 2 M16 rifles, 2 caliber 45 pistols, 2 AK 47 rifles, 1 AK 45, 1 caliber 22 and assorted magazines and ammunitions.

sister, the caretaker of the place, questioned the legality of the warrant issued to the raiding authorities since they are operating a security agency but when asked to present any pertinent pa-pers, the caretaker declined to show the permits.

At 2:30 p.m. on the said date, operatives of the 13th RCIDU, RSOTG, RPSB, PNP-SAF and Agusan del Sur Police also enforced the search warrant at the bunkhouse of Fernandez in Tagleong Palm Oil Planta-tion Complex in La Paz and confiscated 1 M14 rifle, 2 M16 rifles, 2 carbine ri-fles, 2 caliber 45 pistols, 4 rounds of rifle grenade, 1 hand grenade, 1 claymore mine, 14 rounds of 40 mm,

M203 grenade, 165 rounds of live ammo for M14, 530 rounds of live ammo for M16, 2 units rifle scopes, 2 rolls detonating cord with blasting caps and assorted magazines.

The search was witnessed by the manager of the said plantation and the tribal chieftain of La Paz.

During the media pre-sentation held at Camp Rafael Rodriguez, PNP 13 Regional Director C/Supt. Reynaldo S. Rafal com-mended the CIDG on its successful operation. He also added that they already filed a case against Fernandez in violation of PD 1866 as amended by RA 9156 (Illegal Possession, Acquisition or Disposition of Firearms and Ammunitions.

Gen. Rafal also accen-

tuated to the media on the earlier statement hurled by Basister on the legality of the warrant and challenge to show proof on the legal-ity of the agency and the firearms.

“Meron bang security agency na walang signage at ang nakatira ay halos mga bata? Wala din silang armory na pinaglalagyan ng mga armas so how come magsasabi sila nga legal ang ahensiya nila? Then hindi dapat high powered guns yung ginagamit nga mga security”, said Rafal.

The PNP is now coor-dinating with the Firearms and Explosive Division to look on the possibility of the confiscated firearms being used in previous cases of shooting incidents.

THINK a minute.A cemetery in Indiana,

America has a gravestone with these words on it: “Stop stranger, when you pass me by. As you are now, so once was I. As I am now, so you will be. So prepare to die, and follow me!”

A person walking by added these words under-neath: “To follow you I’m not content, until I know which way you went!”

Do you sometimes won-der where your family and friends who’ve died are now?

Do they want you to come where they are?

Don’t you wish they could talk to you?

Where are all those people now who suddenly

Talking to the dead

died in the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11, 2001?

Jesus Christ made it very clear that we already know where we’re going after we die, since it’s only now that we can choose where we’ll live after we die.

He warns us that it will be too late after we die to choose or change our mind.

Jesus said there are only

two choices: to completely believe Him and live His way everyday, or, to keep living our own way. Heaven or hell.

Jesus said there’s no in-between place for nice, good people who won’t ask for His gift of forgiveness and live for Him every day. None of us is perfect.

We’ve all done some things wrong that we need

Jesus to forgive us for and start changing in our char-acter and way of living.

So we don’t need to talk to the dead to find out about life after death.

Jesus Christ has already told us the truth and every-thing we need to know to go where we want to live after we die—together with Him and His true family in heaven.

So for your own peace of mind and safety, won’t you ask Jesus to forgive you for living your own way before it’s too late?

Then ask Him to take full charge of your heart and help you start living His way every day, for the rest of your life.

Just Think a Minute.

TODAY is Maundy Thursday. Also known as ‘Holy Thursday,’ Maundy Thursday is the name given to the day when Jesus celebrated the Last Sup-per or ‘Passover’ with His disciples. For Christians, two significant events took place on Maundy Thursday.

One of the significant events on Maundy Thursday was the celebration of the Last Supper of Jesus and His disciples. During the Last Supper, Jesus took bread and wine to sym-bolize His Blood and Body. The disciples partook of the bread and wine as witnesses of the faith. The Last Supper was the origin of the Holy Communion where Christian churches observed until today. On Maundy Thursday, most Christian churches hold special com-munion services in memory of Jesus Last Supper with His disciples.

The second important event on Maundy Thursday was Jesus washing the feet of His disciples as an act of humility and service. Today, Christian churches around the world still practice the washing of the feet on Maundy Thursday as a symbolism of Christian love, service and humility.

The word Maundy comes from a Latin word that means ‘command.’ Jesus commanded His disciples that they should love and serve one another with humility. There is a brewing issue on whether a Christian should

observe Maundy Thursday since the Bible neither com-mands nor forbids Christians to observe it.

However, the Bible is clear that Maundy Thursday reminds either Christians or non-Christians of the values of love and service with humility. Certainly, service with humility is a value that a person must observe in dealing with his neighbors.

Christ teachings of humility and service to fellow-men are the values that today’s leaders are lacking. There are few leaders, however, that observed Holy Week in the company of their constituents. These lead-ers characterized the teaching of Christ’s service with humility on Maundy Thursday. This is in contrast to some, if not most, leaders who spent their Holy Week in the comfort of luxurious vacations.

More often, it would be unlikely of an elected of-ficial staying to serve constituents while at the same time observing Holy Week. Yet, Cong. Bambi Emano, 2nd District, Misamis Oriental, is just doing things unusual to most elected public officials. Instead of spending his time in vacations elsewhere, the young Emano opt to make a round of his district.

Every Holy Week, Bambi goes around to confer with his constituents. He wants to make sure that basic ser-vices reach them. Bambi typifies a humble legislature who serves his constituents in the humility of Christ. He is a leader that leaders of Misamis Oriental’s future must emulate. To Bambi, let your tribe flourish.

“THE Judiciary has been at the receiving end of continued and relentless attacks on its indepen-dence, from the media-bashing to budgetary cuts and impeachment. All these have only one purpose, and that is to create a compliant and malleable judiciary.”

This was the message from no less the Chief Justice Renato Co-rona who is the trajectory of the impeachment complaint.

These very strong words issued by the Supreme Court of the land are a warning to our democracy. If the masses that compose our majority following the theory of a democracy are to be adhered to, we are doomed.

The masses compose the uninformed, many of the poorly educated, those who refuse to be body-politic and are nonchalant to these developing issues, are headed for the dictates of a singular power belonging to the oli-garchs, the hacienderos, the warlords, if not the headless anarchical communists, the Makati Business Club? or even the media barons now controlling public opinion.

It is interesting to note that media compliment of the surveys now even dictate the voice of the people––who in reality are unaffected by all the politics trying to survive and make a living on a daily basis. While the assumptions are correct of the Chief Justice unless his credibility and integrity are totally destroyed with a conviction from the all-powerful and supreme impeachment court, our freedoms as we know it may be lost, accordingly. Does

this not scare you at all? The absolute power will be of that of the executive. A martial law in disguise, as reiterated by the CJ!

As for the Senator-Judges who have pointed out in multiple interviews with the media have admitted; the power of public opinion has due sensitivities and influence towards their re-election bids making them vulnerable to mob rule over legalities which is allegedly the basis for right or wrong.

I have always pointed out that the majority rule con-trols our countries politics and economics. The question is who controls the majority? As for the impeachment trial, where does rule of law dictate? But isn’t this what the all-powerful and supreme Senator-Judges pledged to in their oath on the onset of the trial of the year.

Imbued personal interests seem to prevail over good of country and of law. If and when one day the majority will realize the manipulation, this will ignite civil unrest unknown of any Spring that has taken place.

By then and only if hunger and freedoms are curtailed, will a people react towards injustices that hopefully will correct the crookedness? That which will be realized and it always has a way of rearing its head, eventually or otherwise, will cause the downfall of the traitors of our country. Our leaders who have become puppets of our media drivers who pose as patriots who promote the crab mentality of the idiots have held this country back since the 60s.

We would have been better off with the Americans on hind sight. The impoverished and the poor are the

ANXIETY may also be experi-enced by patients who are in severe pain, are disabled, have few friends or family members to care for them, have cancer that is not responding to treatment, or have a history of severe physical or emotional trauma.

Central nervous system metastases and tumors in the lungs may create physical problems that cause anxiety.

Many cancer medications and

treatments can aggravate feelings of anxiety.

Contrary to what one might ex-pect, patients with advanced cancer experience anxiety due not to fear of death, but more often from fear of uncontrolled pain, being left alone, or dependency on others.

Many of these factors can be alleviated with treatment. (from the web)

MAMBAJAO, Camiguin - Known to many for its spectacular wonders, be it in the array of finest foods, fruits, waters and people, Camiguin is but a tourist perfect destination.

The island receives flock of local and foreign tour-ist all year round and the Lenten season is among its peak period of the year,

Panaad sa Camiguin 2012every March or April.

After more than 30 years, “Panaad in Camiguin” still continues to draw huge numbers of pilgrims and tourist alike.

It is a religious activity that was started by a hand-ful of islanders in the 80’s and has found its place the region’s annual calendar of top tourist come-ons.

“Panaad” is a Cebuano term which means a reli-gious vow of sacrifice to take the 64-kilometer walk around the island-province, highlighted with an uphill walk in Mt. Vulcan where the 14 Stations of the Cross are located.

The penitent walk nor-mally commences immedi-ately after visitors sets foot on Benoni Port in the town of Mahinog. The crowd then

goes towards Mambajao, and then to Catarman town where the Mt. Vulcan climb awaits each devotee, a never-miss part of the Panaad, then sets off again until they reach back the place to where they have started.

The religious walk is completed with a “Visita Iglesia” in every chapel and old churches they come to pass through. (JCV-PIA 10/jdelpf)

BUTUAN City - The Office of the Presidential Ad-viser on the Peace Process (OPAPP), in partnership with the Department of the Interior and Local Govern-ment (DILG), conducted the Payapa at Masaganang Pamayanan (PAMANA) Program – DILG Orienta-tion and Planning Work-shop, March 22 and 23 here.

OPAPP-DILG spearheads PAMANA workshop

The workshop was aimed at building conflict-free and safe communities towards mainstreaming peace and development in local governance, with funding from the Spanish government.

Identified problems, in-cluded inadequate and poor basic social services, and insufficient road network

that lead to the increase in community support to the National Democratic Front (NDF).

Provincial DILG Direc-tor Romeo A. Solis said “conflict knows no bound-aries, peace and develop-ment are interrelated that is why it is very important to lower the poverty incidents that trigger these conflicts.”

The seminar-workshop was attended by representa-

tives from the provincial, regional and national gov-ernment agencies, private groups, and local officials of each municipality.

Mr. Javier Garcia, rep-resentative from Agencia Espanola de Cooperacion Internacional para el Desar-rollo (AECID) of the Span-ish Government graced the activity. 2013. (RER/LGU-Agusan del Norte/NCLM/PIA-Caraga/asf )

we can finally repair our damaged house),” she said.

Labajo said she has an edge over her neighbors because her husband is a construction worker and is also doing carpentry works so it will be easy for them to repair their partially damaged house with IOM’s SRK.

IOM, which serves as the co-lead with the DSWD in the IASC Camp Coordina-tion and Camp Management (CCCM) cluster, is cur-rently improving conditions in evacuation centres and

transition sites by providing privacy partitions, bed kits, latrines, bathing cubicles, multi-purpose halls and cooking counters, aside from distributing SRKs and essential non-food relief items to displaced families to allow them to leave evacuation centres and return to their homes.

Recently, IOM com-pleted the construction of 75 bunkhouses in the Lumbia relocation site. The project provided short-term employment to almost 200 people from evacuation cen-tres and host communities through a cash-for-work program. (Bong D. Fabe)

persons with disabili-ties (PWDs), female-led households, single parent households and the elderlies.

They were temporarily based in shelter camps and evacuation centers co-man-aged by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Camaman-an, Lapasan, Kauswagan, Ma-casandig, West City Central School, Agusan Elementary School, Xavier Heights, Barangay 24, Isla de Oro, Carmen, Patag, Macabalan, Tibasak, and provincial capitol.

EcoVille Camp Manager Brian Lustre of the Interna-tional Organization for Mi-gration (IOM) said that the 7th Batch were composed of 25 families who took shelter at the Xavier Heights covered court; 10 families from the West City Central School; 1 family from the Provincial Capitol ground; 5 families from Tambo; 1 family from Camaman-an; 1 Crusher family; 1 family

from Patag; 1 family from Barangay 24; 3 families from Lapasan; 6 families from Pasil, Kauswagan; 5 families from Macabalan; and 1 family from City Cen-tral School.

A total of 49 children aged 0 to 19 were among those who were moved from the temporary shelters to the bunkhouses at EcoVille.

Merry Rose Mejia, 40, who is wheelchair-bound because of polio, said that she now can breathe freely.

“Feeling nako makag-inhawa na kog dako, dili pareho atong naa pa kita sa tent nga murag huot kaayo akong ginhawa (I feel that I can freely breath now unlike when I was still at the tent where I felt I can’t breathed),” she said.

She said that unlike in the temporary evacuation center at the West City Cen-tral School where she and her husband and 3 small children evacuated at the height to Tropical Storm Washi on the night of De-cember 16, 2011, she feels secure at the Xavier Ecoville.

“Didto sa tent, mahad-lok man kita kung unsay mahitabo panahon sa atong paghinanok sa gabii. Diri, at least plastar ug secure kita (At the tent, we were afraid what might happen while we were sleeping at night. Here, at least we are secure),” she added.

Ruperto Misteriola, 67, and Erasto Mabaylan Jr., 51, whose houses at Isla Puntod in Barangay Balulang were washed out by TS Washi expressed gratefulness that their families were among those chosen to be trans-ferred to EcoVille.

Mabaylan said in the vernacular that “we cannot but accept the offer extended to our family to transfer to EcoVille.

Although it is a little bit far from our source of livelihood, at least there we can have a semblance of a normal life in a com-munity unlike here in the evacuation center” as his hands and eyes sweep the surroundings at the Xavi-er Heights covered courts where he brought his family

when TS Washi struck last December.

Mabaylan is a buko ven-dor and moonlight as a con-struction worker whenever there is an opportunity in order to augment his meagre income from selling buko.

“Dako kaayo ako pas-alamat sa Ginoo, sa IOM ug sa Xavier University sa ilang tabang kanamo nga ila kaming napili nga mopuyo sa bunkhouses sa EcoVille (I am very grate-ful to God, to IOM and to Xavier University for choosing us to live in the bunkhouses at EcoVille),” said Vilma Nuñez, a cof-fee and cigarette vendor from Isla de Oro who was temporarily sheltered at the Agusan Elementary School evacuation center.

At EcoVille, a sprawling 5.3 hectare community on a land owned by Xavier University and co-managed by IOM, Sendong Survivors can live normally as they slowly rebuild their lives with the help of various organizations. (Bong D. Fabe)

THE GOVERNMENT has assured stakeholders that the power shortage in Mindanao is being addressed.

Department of Energy (DoE) Undersecretary Jose-fina Patricia Asirit said that there is no power shortage in the island. Her assertion ran in contrast to cities like Cotabato, General Santos, Kidapawan and Zamboanga provinces where there are power outage.

During a meeting with stakeholders, Asir it said ‘there is a (power) situation in Mindanao but this is being

No power shortage in Mindanao: DOEaddressed by the government even its technical aspect.’

“The DoE Secretary is biting the bullet here... un-popular decisions have to be made to solve the power situation in Mindanao,” she said.

The Mindanao business sector, however, wants the government to map out con-crete plans to address power shortage in the island.

Mindanao Business Coun-cil (MinBC) Chairperson Vicente Lao said that the government could not present plans between now and 2014

to augment power supply. With the current unstable

power supply in Mindanao, Lao said there would be huge losses in the economy con-sidering that there is now a 4 to 6 percent growth or around 50 MW power needs

annually.Asirit said the DoE had

approved the construction of a total of 700 MW coal-fired power plant for Mindanao, which is expected to be op-erational by 2014.

As a short-term solution

to the problem, she said the government is set to revive the operation of the 100-MW Iligan Diesel Power Plant (IDPP), which was shutdown since 2010.

The power plant also needs clearance from the

Commission on Audit (CoA) before it resumes operation.

Another short-term solu-tion is the immediate transfer of power barges and acceler-ate the government’s energy efficiency program, she said. WITH WIRE REPORT

fever pitch after Palm Sunday, has been the per-sonal or community prepa-ration of believers in what Tagalogs and those in sur-rounding areas describe as the Pabasa ng Pasyon.

Among northerners, those in the Ilocos Region or the Cagayan Valley, this is the Pasion Ni Apo Jesus, which remains recited or sung in the traditional beat from sunrise to round 10 pm.

The chant-like song, with or without guitar-strumming believers, was imported from Spanish mis-sionaries, handed down from generation to genera-tion in this deeply religious country of nearly 100 mil-lion people.

The Pabasa gives the believers the opportunity to meditate on the passion, the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Theologians say the Pas-sion of the Lord was com-posed in the 17th century by Spanish missionaries, which adapted the European biblical tradition to the oral and melodic traditions of the native-born Filipinos.

But the Passion has uprooted itself from the Spanish language, recited while the Philippines was under Spanish colonizers for nearly four centuries before Filipinos quickly adapted themselves to the lifestyle of Hollywood and, briefly, the taste of sushi and tempura during the Japanese occupation in the 1940s.

Many Filipinos eventu-ally sought out a version close to their hearts and many, like those in the north of the country, translated the Spanish language Pas-sion of the Lord to the Iluko language, the lingua franca of the north zone.

According to research-ers, the first version outside of the Ilocos region and written in the Tagalog lan-

guage dates back to 1704.Researchers say this was

made by Gaspar Aquino de Belen, a native of Batangas, then in the service of the Jesuits in Manila.

It was titled Mahal na Passion ni Jesu Christong Panginoon Natin na Tola (The poem of the Blessed Passion of Jesus Christ our Lord).

Another known version of the Pasyon the “Casay-sayan nang Pasiong Mahal ni JesuCristong Panginoon Natin na Sucat Ipag-alab nang Puso nang Sinomang Babasa” (The History of the Passion of Jesus Christ our Lord that will set afire the heart of whosoever reads it), has been published by an unknown writer in 1814.

The text, which starts with few stanzas about the Creation of the World and ends with some words about the Apocalipses of Juan, continues to be used to date among the Tagalogs.

In the meanwhile, devo-tees rip the air apart with their plaintive meditation or with the rap version of the passion, the crucifixion and the resurrection of Christ. WIRE REPORT

their vehicle collided with a Mitsubishi Fuso truck wing van.

Police investigation showed that when the Abangs reached Purok 4, Barangay Osmeña, Bayu-gan City at around 5:10 pm, Alexander, who was driving the motorcycle, tried to overake a vehicle and “accidentally”collided with the truck van driven by Edmar Simple Tejada, 26. Rescuers brought the Abangs to D.O. Plaza Memo-

rial Hospital in Prosperidad town where they succumbed to multiple injuries.

Tejada turned himself in to Bayugan City police authorities.

On Monday, Ballos and his backrider Cabatingan were on the way to Barobo, Surigao del Sur on a mo-torcycle at around 3:30 pm when Ballos “ lost control” of his vehicle in Purok 3, Barangay Quezon, Tag-bina town. Police said the motorcycle swerved to the roadside and rammed the highway railings. Ballos suf-fered “fatal head injuries” and died “instantaneously,” police said.

Responding policemen brought Cabatingan to Tag-bina District Hospital where he is now confined.

He said the holy week days particularly during Maundy Thursday to Easter Sunday are “critical times when transporting illegal logs are considered active based upon experience in the past.”

He said the DENR would still rely on the cooperation and support of the people to stop illegal logging in their area.

“There is no doubt that timber poachers can some-times elude the DENR op-eratives nevertheless with the support of the people they may not succeed.” said Sibbaluca.

The DENR off icials made a round of visit at the different forest moni-toring checkpoints along the Maharlika Highway and the Agusan River and reminded personnel to be alert, awake and enthusi-astic about transporting

illegal logging products in their area.

Sibbaluca also conferred with the Philippine Army Battalion Commanding Of-ficers in Surigao del Sur and Agusan del Sur and also the Philippine National Police officials about service per-sonnel assistance support when the situation warrants.

“We always thank the Philippine Army and the PNP for their all-out sup-port to the campaign of the DENR against illegal logging,” he said.

Last year the DENR-13 has confiscated a total of 5,250 cubic meters of illegal logs and 383,415 board feet of illegally-cut lumber and flitches. The DENR filed 23 cases with violation of PD 705 at the Environmental Court against illegal log-gers and timber poachers in Caraga Region.

Since Executive Order No. 23 took effect on Feb-ruary 1, 2011 chainsaws, bulldozers, graders and all other logging tools and implements are now off-limit in natural and residual forests nationwide.

Sibbaluca said the EO 23 issued by President Aquino declared a moratorium on the cutting and harvesting of timber in the natural and

residual forests, and the creation of an anti-illegal logging task force.

Environment and Nat-ural Resources Secretary Ramon J. P. Paje also gave instructions to all DENR regional executive direc-tors to pull out of all log-ging/cutting and hauling equipment from natural and residual forests after 28 days from its imposition.

Sibbaluca said the in-struction which he gave to all CENR officers to pull out of any logging/cutting and hauling equipment from all natural and residual forests remained enforced to en-sure that no further timber harvesting shall be done following the imposition of the logging moratorium.

He said the acceptance and processing of new as well as renewal or extension of, integrated operation plans, annual work plans or resources use permits in all natural and residual forest has been also sus-pended in accordance with the DENR Memorandum No.52 issued by Secretary Paje The memorandum has also limited the processing of application permits to forest tenure holders within their plantation sites only. consequence of their failures and they walk about as if their family names have stature other than de-feat. Have we turned into a country of idiots?

As for corruption; is it not the government that is corrupted and the masses only following the example. Services to the people are measured and left wanting.

The message loud and clear “kung walang korup walang mahirap” is so true but it is in government where the corruption ex-ist. These are the corrupt officials of the PNP, AFP, the BIR, Customes, Immi-gration, OWWA, DTI, DOT. DPWH, LB, etc., this list is endless. Cleaning up has all to do with government and not the people! UPDATE : BusinessWeek Mindanao’s Partners OUTSTANDING ENTREPRENEURS & BUSINESS LEADERS AWARDS 2012

Founded in 1950 by the Sarmiento brothers - Feliciano, Lorenzo and Pablo - Vitarich underwent phenomenal expan-sion until it grew to become one of the Philippines’ leading integrators. Today, we operate a number of production facili-ties throughout the country, including feed mills, hatcheries and dressing plants. Given our vision to serve our customers with effective technical and marketing sup-port, it is not surprising that we dedicate substantial resources to the research and develop-ment of production process improvements and product value enhancement. The es-tablishment of our Research Center, which is the first of its kind in the Philippines, is solid proof of our desire to constantly enhance the quality of our products such as live and dressed chicken, animal and aqua feeds, day-old chicks, and animal health products. As an integrated poultry producer, we oversee every aspect of the poultry produc-tion process from hatching and breeding to processing to sales.OPERATIONS 111 Vitarich is engaged in the feed and livestock operations in plants located throughout the Philippines. We produce hog, poultry, aqua, and other specialty feed requirements for our livestock operations. We formulate, produce, store, and market our feed which come in mash, pellet, crumble, and extruded forms. The product line consists of broiler, layer, hog, aqua, and other specialty feeds. We sell our animal and aqua feeds to distributors, dealers, and end users. Our livestock operations involve everything from breeding and growing to

marketing of animals. Business Opportunities with Vitarich Contract GrowingWhat is contract growing? Simply put, you rear the chicks. Vitarich harvests the flock and markets the chickens. If you think about it, con-tract growing is easier to man-age than any other poultry or livestock venture. We take care of the feeds, chicks, and technical services. We even take care of marketing. Bet-ter still, you need little initial capital because we shoulder the cost of feeds and chicks. This is exactly the kind of business small- and medium-scale en-trepreneurs are looking for. .How does it work? We provide you with ev-erything you need to start your own business and make it succeed. We provide the day-old-chicks (DOCs), feed support, vaccines, technical services, and other services. You take care of the hous-ing; labor; power, light, and water; equipment; medica-tion; and other miscellaneous expenses. Once the chickens are grown, you profit by the kilo. We harvest the flock and sell the chickens. Why work with Vitarich? First of all, we guarantee the quality and performance of our chicks. Vitarich uses the world-renowned Cobb broiler chicks. Cobb broiler chicks are supe-rior to other chicks because:they have a good initial body weight; they have an excel-lent growth rate which means, they develop stronger immu-nity faster than other chicks, they have a lower mortality rate, and their cost of brooding is lower; they produce customer-pre-ferred round, double-breasted meaty broilers with short big legs. From hatchery to deliv-ery, our chicks undergo the strictest quality control. After hatching, the chicks are placed in specially designed plastic crates and are then immedi-ately delivered to your farm. When the chicks arrive, our technical personnel will be with you as you break open the Quality Control Seal to inspect and count the chicks. Were so confident about our

Cobb chicks, that youre entitled to reject chicks that are appar-ently weak due to transport or other factors such as poor climate. Second, we provide the best support possible. We provide the best in technical support. Our technical group is composed of highly qualified farm-trained specialists, each of whom is equipped with everything they need to help you with your needs. These specialists will be with you from the time you think about signing up and all throughout the contract growing process. Heres what theyll do for you: Assess the feasibility of the project; Assist you with farm lay-out, poultry building design and construction, and other details that have a direct impact on general flock health and management; Provide you with regular in-plant training sessions for new growers as well as refresher courses for experienced growers; Conduct seminars on the latest advancements in the poultry industry and sponsor drug orientation courses in coordination with veterinary drug companies; Be there to help you before and during the delivery of chicks; Give helpful tips on proper brooding management and ensure the most suitable conditions for chicks accep-tance; Conduct regular farm visits to supervise DOC placements, assist you during brooding, deliver AHP and supervise hauling; evaluate flock perfor-mance in terms of mortality, feed consumption, weight gain, etc.; Provide vaccines and assist you and/or super-

vise your workers for proper vaccination techniques and procedures; Formulate a bios-ecurity program most suited for your farm including vac-cination schedules, medication plans, quarantine procedures, disinfection and sanitation practices; Evaluate the farms perfor-mance after harvest and discuss with you possible improve-ments for better and more profitable operations. Our technical support group is even prepared to assist you with accounting, recording, and administrative procedures. We also provide logistics support. Working in close coor-dination with the Technical Support Group is our Logistics and Support Group which is based in Marilao. Logistics and Support will handle the processing of your application; coordinate prompt feed and chick deliveries; expedite the release of your checks; and take care of hauling finished broilers from your farm to Vitarichs Dressing Plant. To support both groups, other Departments within Vitarich are always prepared to help. In short, Vitarich has a very efficient and effective contract support system based on its long years of experience and service. Third, you never have to worry about marketing. Vitarich handles the mar-keting of your finished prod-ucts. So you never have to worry about fluctuations in prices, or competing with other fish products, or where and how to sell your fishes. We take care of all that and, in the process, save you marketing-related expenses

MISAMIS Occidental––Provincial legislators under Vice Governor Henry Oaminal are backing the plan of the two electric cooperatives (ECs) operating in the province to buy additional load from Therma Marine, Inc. (TMI), a subsidiary of the Aboitiz Group of Companies.

The ECs––Misamis Occidental 1 Electric Coop-erative (MOELCI 1) and MOELCI 2––have yet to get the “go-ahead” of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) in regard to its plan to acquire additional load of 3 megawatts from TMI to cushion the impact of power shortage in Misamis Occidental.

Provincial legislators have invited officials of the Napocor and NGCP, including the two ECs, apparently to explain the increasing power load curtailment.

Napocor and NGCP representatives admitted they were helpless saying they only rely solely on how the government would address the power shortage follow-ing the approval of the Epira Law or the Energy Power Industry Reform Act of 2000 and the establishment of Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management (PSALM).

Senior officials of the MOELCI 1 and 2 said they are now asking the ERC to let TMI grant their load contract but said it would mean an additional P1.30 per kilowatt hour increase in electricity.

The Napocor and NGCP together with other gov-ernment power assets to include the Agus and Pulangi Hydro Energy Power Plants, SPPC in Sarangani province, WMPPC in Zamboanga City, Geo-Thermal in Cotabato City, STEAG in Misamis Oriental, TMI Power Barges, are producing only 1,085 MWs of energy.

Today’s energy demand in Mindanao has reached to 1,280 MWs and this would mean that more or less 200 MWs are needed to be back in shape.

BUTUAN City––An unde-termined number of heav-ily armed New People’s Army rebels fired gunshots on the Philippine

Army’s 23rd Infantry Battalion patrol base in Sitio Mahayahay, Barangay Anticala here on Tuesday.

Caraga police spokes-man Supt. Martin Gamba said the communist rebels believed to be members of Front Committee 21C were possibly on a harassment mission.

Gamba said the rebels

fired on the patrol base manned by some 35 mi-litias at around 2:20 am and the ensuing firefight lasted for some three min-utes. The rebels then with-drew to the mountainous area of Barangay Padiay, Sibagat, Agusan del Sur, he said.

No casualties were re-ported on the government side, he said.

Personnel of the Bu-tuan police station 4 recov-ered 50 caliber 5.56 empty shells, Gamba added.

Unique features include the ability to schedule funds transfer and bill payments, which is useful for funding and paying recurring obliga-tions, and online subscrip-tion and redemption of investment funds.

According to award-giving body DigitalFili-pino.com, an independent community of e-commerce professionals and enthusi-asts who promote best e-commerce practices in the country, bpiexpressonline.com was particularly cited for the significant growth of its online customers, breadth of product offer-ings, design and function-ality.

The award’s stringent evaluation includes search-engine and social media visibility, website traffic and stickiness, as well as

“My UE line-up is a mixture of my team A and B because I had to leave some of my players who had problems with their academics ,” said Codiñera, whose father Filomeno is also a legend-ary national softball and baseball coach.

The 6-foot-6 Codi-ñera became the young-est member, at 17, of the RP men’s basketball team under coach Ron Jacobs before turning pro in the Philippine Basketball As-sociation (PBA).

Meanwhile, Codinera had earlier wanted to get Renzar Henry Asilum of Davao City to play for his University of the East Red Warriors basketball team.

In fact, Codiñera al-ready had a verbal agree-

technical performance.“The BPI website was

designed and continues to evolve to make banking easy for our customers. With bpiexpressonline.com, clients can bank from home or from the office at any time of the day.

They can manage their accounts easily and conve-niently so they have more time to spend on other important matters,” said BPI Senior Manager Anj Mirasol.

bpiexpressonline.com has won many awards since it was launched in 1999, notable of which is a citation by Global Finance magazine in 2011 for Best Consumer Internet Bank.

BPI was among 30 awardees in various cat-egories representing the most visited websites in the country feted at the 5th Digital Filipino and Search Profile Index Web Awards held at the Peninsula Manila Hotel in Makati City on February 24.

Among the winners are: Inquirer.net for print news, Pep.ph for entertainment, Census.gov.ph for govern-ment, and Globe.com.ph for telecommunications.

ment with Asilum’s father Henry.

But the Asilums had changed their mind and instead the peppery point guard who played for the Philippines Under 17 bas-ketball team in the 2011 SEABA Under 16 opted to suit up for the Uni-versity of the Philippines Maroons.

“Ganun talaga eh, min-san meron ganun sa bas-ketball. Nagka shake hands na kayo pero mag-iiba pa rin ng isip (It’s normal in basketball. You have already shook hands but sometime mind changes),” Codiñera told a sports fo-rum at the Royal Mandaya Hotel here.

Henry Asilum is coach-ing the RMH Davao Youth Selection composed most-

ly of players f rom the Ateneo de Davao High School which is playing an exhibition game with the visiting PH Under 14 national team under coach Mark Herrera.

The RMH Red Warriors will also be reinforced by former PBA cagers Chris Calaguio and Dondon Ca-maso and 6-foo-8 import Charles Mamie.

P B A v e t e r a n a n d Davao-born John Ferri-ols of B-Meg might also play for RMH, according to team owner Glenn Es-candor.

“Wala naman problema sa amin sa pag adjust sa system sa team (We don’t have problems in adjust-ing the system with the team). We can provide the veteran’s role and guide the young ones,” said Calaguio, who only retired last 2010.

Camaso, on the other hand, said that they will share their experience on their young teammates.

Codiñera said he has no problem with Mamie, who grew up in Manches-ter, England, since he had joined the practice of the Warriors in Manila for three months.

“Coach Jerry is like a brother to me also,” Ma-mie said.

Codiñera said he will still try to get more players from Davao or Mindanao to beef up his squad.

T h e R M H - U E R e d Warriors was still play-ing against the Phoenix Petroleum represented by the San Sebastian College Stags as of press time.

Also competing in the four-day league sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Mindanao Cluster B under Regino “Boy” Cua are the Mon-tana Pawnshop Davao and Goldstar Hardware Davao.

“We will just have to fight and play our best to them,” said Codiñera, who is married to a Da-bawenya. (PNA)

for justice.”In an interview with

Ted Failon of TV Patrol, Sister Flory said that she’s willing to testify at the im-peachment trial of Corona. She said that the Coronas could keep the money, all she wanted is to see justice done.

What goes around…Well, Ana and Sister

Flory might finally see the light at the end of the tun-nel. Last March 12, Corona’s lawyers started their presen-tation of Corona’s defense. But Corona’s defense panel has a dilemma. For Corona to avoid culpability, his de-fense lawyers have to prove that the P11 million “cash advance” and the P32.6 million he withdrew from PSBank on December 12, 2011 does not belong to him. If so, then Corona would have to return the monies to the rightful owners, the heirs of the Basa-Guidote clan.

Indeed, Ana might fulfill her deathbed promise to her father and Sister Flory might get her birthday wish granted. And how about Corona? One thing for sure, he might be able to get away with betrayal of public trust but he can’t escape from the Law of Karma. As someone once said, “Nothing escapes the Law of Karma. You get from the world what you give to the world.” Yes, what goes around comes around.

LGUs TO DEMOLISH, PNOY URGED: Then, also, the government should ad-dress the complaints brought to the United Nations by Filipino human rights or-ganizations which say that violent demolitions and arbitrary detentions have increased all the more dur-ing the Aquino presidency. President Aquino should lead in the drive against demolitions and detentions, by pushing legislation to remedy the problems.

One bill he should insist on is the amendment of the Local Government Code of 1991 (Republic Act 7160) to remove a provision that allows city and municipal officials to carry out demo-litions even without court orders. Then, the other one is an amendment of the Re-vised Penal Code to make illegal arrests and detentions a heinous crime, punishable with life imprisonment and immediate dismissal.Fare...from page 1

Iway told InterAksyon.com, the news portal of TV-5.

Iway said the fare hike will apply to all regions except Region 12, which did

not seek a fare adjustment. He said there was no

need for a fare matrix be-cause the 50-centavo hike is just an “add-on.” There will be no additional charge for every kilometer after the first five kilometers.

Iway added that the pro-visional fare hike will be in effect while the LTFRB deliberates on the “main” petition for a P2 fare hike.

In a radio interview, Department of Transporta-tion and Communications (DOTC) Secretary Manuel Roxas II said: “Ang report ni LTFRB Chairman [Jaime] Jacob, pinagpasyahan ng LTFRB na 50 centavos one-time sa unang sakay ang dagdag na maaaring ipataw ng jeep drivers.”

Earlier, LTFRB spokes-person Sonia del Mundo said the LTFRB considers a petition to hike jeepney fares as “urgent.”

However, Del Mundo said a petition for a P2 increase to the current P8 minimum fare for jeepneys is still undergoing public hearings and consultations.

Among the transport groups that sought a 50-cen-tavo provisional fare hike were:

• Federation of Jeepney Operators and Drivers As-sociation of the Philippines (Fejodap)

• Al l iance of Con-cerned Transport Opera-tors (ACTO)

• Pangkalahatang Sang-gunian Manila and Suburbs Drivers Association (Pasang Masda)

• 1-Utak• Liga ng Transportasyon

at Opereytors sa Pilipinas (LTOP)

They said they could no longer cope with the rising prices of fuel and spare parts. Some transport

groups have also held pro-tests to press for an increase in fares.

He said, however, that jeepneys will be required to roll back the minimum fare once diesel prices go back to P45 per liter.

Meanwhile, the weekly average oil price of the Or-ganization of Petroleum Ex-porting Countries (OPEC) continued to increase last week, rising to 123.74 U.S. dollars per barrel, the Vien-na-based cartel said Monday.

OPEC oil prices have risen for six consecutive weeks since mid-February, partly due to volatility in Iran and much of the Middle East.

It is said one of the major topics discussed between British Prime Minister David Cameron and U.S. President Barack Obama during a recent meeting at the White House was the need to release strategic petroleum reserves to sta-bilize oil prices.

Although the White House later denied this, it highlighted concerns over the current trend of increas-ing oil prices.

The International Energy Agency said the global eco-nomic outlook this year is expected to be weak.

Despite U.S. crude oil inventories rising by 1.75 million barrels in March, a strong U.S. dollar, and no sign of a supply short-age in crude and refined oil market, international oil prices have continued rising. Last week, daily oil prices reached a record high of 124.59 dollars a barrel.

“The market is inconsis-tent with the oil price trend, which is puzzling,” said Tony Rosado, an analyst at Global Markets. With a report from Philippine News Agency

AGUA Sea-food Res-taurant, that

Chabacano sea-food restaurant at Limketkai Center‘s Rosario Strip , is starting the new year with a new cook, a new look and a new menu. “We’ve decided to focus on Asian Fusion cuis ine s ince our cus-tomers want more variety, especially something that’s different from what they’ve tried in other restaurants,” said Lulu Abarado, Agua operations manager. As ian fus ion combines the fla-vors and ingredi-ents of the Pacific Rim into simple yet delicious dishes. Highl ighted by fresh ingredients, many Asian fusion recipes are cooked quickly to preserve the fresh flavors of the ingredients in the dishes. Another wonder-ful aspect of Asian fusion cuisine is its presentation. Agua’s kitchen has combined the col-orful ingredients in unique presenta-tions that are not only savory to taste, but pleasing to see and taste as well (view photos in this page). A m o n g t h e new i tems one can glean from Agua’s menu are Beef Rendang and Nasi Goreng. Rendang is a spicy meat dish traditionally served during festive oc-casions around

South East Asia. A 2011 CNNGo on-line poll joined in by 35,000 online partici-pants chose Renda-ng as the number 11 dish in their ‘World’s 50 Most Delicious Foods’ list, followed by Nasi Goreng (ba-goong rice, popu-larly known as the national dish of In-donesia). Tom Yam Kung (a Lao and Thai hot and sour soup) ranks eight on the same list. Other new items in Agua’s Asian Fusion menu, albeit not as popular as the first three mentioned, but can hold their own in the ultimate testing ground of the palate include Ginger Clam Soup (a Southern Phil ippines clam soup spiced with ginger from Zambo-anga City, of course); Singapore fish curry (using only Lapu-Lapu fish), Steamed Pompano with Black Beans, Kung Pao fish fillet (a Nonya spe-cialty from Malaysia/Indonesia), Singa-pore chili crab, Thai Curry Crab, Hebi Kangkong, Fried Egg Beancurd, Black Pepper and Stir-Fried Seafood Udon, and Mee Goreng (fried

noodles famous in Malaysia, Indo-nesia and Singa-pore). The menu’s not all that’s changed. “We want to emphasize that Agua’s prices are now more afford-able and popu-larly priced,” Ms. Abarado stresses. “Orders are now also more right-sized for 3-4 per-sons. With the right serving size, our menu is now af-fordably priced.” Agua has also amenities that ca-ter to the corporate and government clientele. Among them, a private din-ing room that seats 14 people and comes free for four hours with a mini-mum order and a function room that can seat 25-30 persons and also comes free pro-vided a minimum order is placed from Agua’s set menu which starts at P275 per cover inclusive of four entrees, rice and dessert. Agua opens daily 11AM-2PM, and again at 5:30-10:00PM.
