R10 supplies 63.90% of M’nao power grid’s dependable capacityDacanay said the installed

capacity means the number of MW that a power plant can produce while dependable capacity is the number of MW produced during peak hours.

Data gathered by NEDA from the National Power Corporation (NPC) show that Region 10’s depend-able capacity in 2010 was 799.20MW but was reduced by 7.33MW or 0.92%, in 2011, due to El Niňo that caused the decrease of the water levels in Lake Lanao and Pulangi River aff ecting the water supply that ran the turbines of the hydro-electric plants (HEP).

Meanwhile, Dacanay said the total dependable power source of the region in 2011 had a power generation mix of HEP, coal-fi re, and solar plant, as no diesel power plant was operational in the entire year.

Th ese sources posted the corresponding shares in the dependable capacity of the region: 580.87 MW or 73.35 percent from the HEPs, 210 MW or 26.52 percent from

the coal-fi red plant, and 1.0 MW or 0.13 percent from the solar plant.

Th e location of these pow-er plants, their installed and dependable capacity were as follows: Agus 4 HEP in Nang-ka, Balo-I town, Lanao del Norte, with installed capacity of 158.10 MW and dependable capacity of 152MW; Agus 5 HEP in Ditucalan, Iligan City with installed capacity of 55 MW and dependable capac-

ity of 53.543MW and Agus 6 HEP in Maria Cristina, Iligan City with installed capacity of 200MW and dependable capacity of 136 MW; Agus 7 HEP in Fuentes, Iligan City with installed capacity of 54 MW and dependable capac-ity of 26 MW and Pulangi 4 HEP in Kiuntod, Camp 1, Maramag town, Bukidnon with installed capacity of 255 MW and dependable capac-ity of 213.33 MW; Mindanao

THE 5th General Assembly of the Iskolar Ko Ni Bambi (IKNB) was moved this year from the traditional Febru-ary 14 date to April 14.

Misamis Oriental 2nd District Rep. Yevgeny “Bam-bi” Emano said he moved the date to give time to sym-pathize with the typhoon Sendong victims in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan cities.

Held at the Pilgrim Christian College Audito-rium in Cagayan de Oro, the assembly drew hun-dreds of beneficiaries of the congressman’s scholarship program for the province.

To date more than 10,000 youth have been scholars and the expenses have to-taled some P20-million.

Included in the day’s meeting were presentation of the IKNB municipal chap-ters and coordinators, a testimony by IKNB ben-ficiary Abner Jagurin and a message from Technical Education and Skills Devel-opment Authority (Tesda) OIC regional director Edgar A. Sales.

Sales noted the many benefits of the program especially the Libertdad Skills Training Center proj-ect which has benefited the western municipalities of the province.

He said the congressman, who is a Tesda awardee, has a big heart and that’s why the scholarships have continued.

As a tribute to their benefactor, each of the 14 chapters of the IKNB pre-sented a production number.

In his inspirational mes-sage, Emano praised the scholars and gave recog-nition to graduates who garnered magna cum laude and cum laude honors this year from the Tagoloan Community College and the MSU-Naawan.

He also thanked the mu-nicipal officials who came to grace the affair, includ-ing Opol Mayor Dexter Yasay and the vice mayor of Libertad.

THERE are insinuations that gambling casinos will do more harm than good in places where it operates. That gambling casinos erode the citizens’ moral values. Some of the most progressive and highly developed metropolitan centers around the world had gambling casinos as their main source of economic activity. For instance, gambling casinos lead the progress of Hon-gkong in Asia and Las Vegas in Nevada, United States.

Key cities in the Philippines have gambling casinos as their major tourist attraction. Baguio City, the country’s summer capital, has a gambling casino. Manila has dozen of gambling casinos offshore and on-shore. Cebu, the most progressive trading hub in the Visayas, has gambling casinos. The province of Bohol, another major tourist destination operates a gambling casino. Davao City in Mindanao has gambling casino, too.

It is time, Cagayan de Oro City, must have a gambling casino. It is only with a gambling casino that Cagayan de Oro City would be able to consummate its claim as the trad-ing capital in this part of the country. We, the people of Cagayan de Oro, believe that having a gambling casino is long overdue. The people of Cagayan de Oro deserved to have a gambling casino as one of its major tourist attractions.

As a city of mature people, one of the pleasures that the people and its visitors will enjoy is taking part in casino games. Casinos are wonderful places where one can try to win a fortune. After all, winning in casino games is not a monopoly of one person. Winning in casino games is a privi-lege guaranteed to people enjoying freedom.

Usually there are other people besides you who want that job, scholarship, business, or title. But some people will stop at nothing to win.

Whether it’s lying, cheat-ing, or gossiping and de-stroying someone’s repu-tation.

Yet when we compete only to win and beat the other person, it not only makes us bad losers, but also bad winners. That kind of competing produces a person with a bad heart and character, with self-centered greed, pride, and envy.

An important lesson in

‘The real competition’

life is to learn to compete only against yourself. Then, whether you win or lose against others, you still win! Because all the time and ef-fort you spent to work and improve only makes you a better person who’s closer to reaching your potential.

As one guy put it: “Tres-passing is okay, if the bound-aries you cross are your own!” So when we set good, important goals for our-selves, they work in two

ways: we work on them, and they work on us.

The real test of your success is whether you’re a better person than you were yesterday?

Are your attitudes and character better?

Are you a better husband or wife?

A better father or moth-er?

A better worker? You know, we can com-

pete and win in our career

and making money, but if we lose our good character by being dishonest or hurting and using others, then we’ve lost the real competition and what’s important.

The real measure of suc-cess is not what you HAVE, but what you ARE as a person. What kind of heart and character do you have?

What kind of relation-ships do you have with other people?

If you’ve allowed yourself to compete against others and you’ve done dishonest things or hurt people.

Why not ask Jesus to forgive you today and start changing your heart and way of living? Then you can learn to compete only against yourself and win every time!

SOME QUARTERS want the Depart-ment of Energy (DoE) abolished. Maintaining such department is waste of taxpayers’ money.

However, abolishing the DoE is not constructive. The absence of the energy department will defi-nitely lead to unabated abuses by the country’s power sectors such as unfair power rate hikes. One could not imagine how it would be if the power sectors were freely allowed to determination power rates. Thus, the DoE stays to act as consumers’ watchdog.

It appears ‘though that the present DoE is not re-sponsive to the welfare of power consumers. Thus, one could not blame if suspicions are high that influential stakeholders in the power industry are dictating the policies of the DoE today. This situation is happening in Mindanao today.

With inconsistent report about the real power situ-ation in Mindanao, the islanders could not but level its guns on the ineptitude of Energy Secretary Jose Rene Almendras. In the past, there were moves to boot Al-mendras out of the energy’s top post. Being one of the trustees of President Aquino, any attempt to replace Almendras would prove futile. Coincidentally, Almen-dras has his roots in Mindanao although his family is a known ‘coal mine magnet’ in the province of Cebu.

In other words, the Almendrases are engaged in coal industry. Is there any relation with the construc-tion of the proposed coal-fired power plant in Davao? A coal-fired power plant is a pollutant. The people in Davao are opposing the construction of the proposed

Earlier, the Aboitiz group of companies warned of a possible power supply shortage in Mindanao. Based on that projection, Aboitiz submitted the proposed construction of the coal-fired power plant. Perhaps, in order to justify the need for the construction of the coal-fired power plant, Aboitiz needs an ally who has the capability to pursue their plans. Undoubtedly, Aboitiz found an ally in energy Secretary Almendras.

Consequently, Almendras issued a Department Circular citing the inevitability of power shortage in the island unless investments from private sectors are allowed. ‘These investments will only happen if the local governments and the people of Mindanao help in solving the situation,’ the Almendras circular said.

What makes the difference? The Almendrases and the Aboitizes are neighbors or even certified friends from Cebu. While it would take mountains of evidence to establish the connivance of the Aboitizes and the Almendrases in the privatization of power supply in Mindanao, the suspicion will definitely persists. Was there a done deal?

Again, there is no power shortage in Mindanao. On the contrary, Mindanao suffers government neglect. Instead of maintaining existing sources of power supply in Mindanao, the government wants to gener-ate additional power load at the expense of the poor Mindanaoans.

Indeed, it is unfortunate of a government that looks into the interest of the few rather than the common good. There is no need to abolish DoE. Instead, let Sec. Almendras go. React: [email protected]

THE issue involved in the Spratleys Islands is big enough worthy of bigtime war. Getting involved in the controversy is not a game for kids or cowards.

The reasons are there a lot of countries which are claiming ownerships and sovereignty thereof and all of them are willing and able to make battle against anyone should the time calls for it. And what is even worse is that these countries are big, strong, have strong military and are ready to fight when it becomes necessary.

And for these reasons, I urge our leaders to take it easy in dealing with these countries which have bet-

Our militar y is i l l-equipped and small in size. If we open so much our mouth to assert our claim for the Spratleys, it might irritate the giants and hold our neck. I suggest we be-have like a small country that we are and show our

claims and right the way it should be presented in a peaceful manner.

Who are we against the might of China? Vietnam, etc.? I mean if there is some-thing to fight it out, we should do it in peace and if we lose our claim over the Spratleys, at least we are alive and untouched. We did not lose pride and honor.

I am not saying these

because we are cowards but because we are small nation with a big mouth. We talk so much as if we are somebody in the world. Filipinos know how to fight on a flat ground, I mean on the same level.

Of all the claimants of the Spratleys, the Philippines is rated the smallest country. Our military according to our leaders is ill-equipped, unmanned or lack of sol-diers and bullets.

We have few warships and small size navy, we have few outdated jet fighters. Of course we have lots of boloes and spears but these are not qualified to fight a foreign military.

Right Revd. Felixberto L. Calang of the host Dio-cese of Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon and Camiguin (MOBUCA) said, the three-day forum of common wor-ship, study and reflection is being attended by the eight diocesan bishops in Mindanao, some 90 regional sectoral presidents, diocesan

treasurers and other church leaders.

MCL is an organ under the Mindanao Bishops Con-ference (MINBISCON) that sorts out, prioritizes, sched-ules and follows through of-ficial actions undertaken by the 2011 Mindanao Plenary Assembly (MPA).

“It is composed of all re-gional and diocesan church leaders, representing the lay and ordained,” Bishop Calang added.

Dubbed by the film studio as “the naval version of the ‘Trans-formers’ series,” the film has been presented as a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the legendary Universal Pictures film company.

“The film was shot on real battleships during a joint naval drill of 16 nations in the Pacific,” the film’s direc-tor Peter Berg said at the premier in Beijing on Sunday. “That was really amazing.”

As the son of a Marine, Berg said he wanted to move the war scenes to the ocean, which few directors have done, in an effort to offer audiences a refreshing, but shocking experience.

The destruction of the mountain and the hazards of unsafe use of cyanide and mercury added to the long woes of residents in the town who are dependent on fishing and agriculture as their source of livelihoods.

I l legal miners have blasted the mountain to make tunnels where workers gather rocks and deliver or sell them to rod mill op-erators who pay them P20 per bag. Tens of dozens of rod mills are mostly built under wooden houses of illegal miners where they are processed using cyanide, mercury and nitric acid to extract the gold from crushed rocks.

The whole of Balabag is a danger zone because it is prone to landslides and rock falls, according to the Mines and Geosciences Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. But despite re-peated warnings for illegal miners to abandon their trade for safety reasons, fi-nanciers have widened their operations, employing more workers recruited from as far as Davao province and nearby areas.

There were also re-ports that some munici-pal officials are allegedly involved or financing the illegal mining activities in Balabag. The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has ordered an investigation into these reports, according to Leo Santillan, a spokesman for the Zamboanga del Sur provincial government.

He said the illegal mining activities brought deaths and miseries to a lot of families because of the unsafe mining practice in Balabag.

“How many more lives must perish before we can act and totally put a stop to illegal mining? I am ap-

Under the agreement, the provincial government would set aside funds worth P75,000 for each of the housing units.

Each unit had a total land area of 140 square me-ters. The province shelled at least P3,750,000 for the low-cost housing projects.

Calingasan saw the need to pursue the project so that local residents living beside the national highway

will be relocated for their own safety.

Also during the turn-over ceremony, Calingasan handed over the province’s donation––in the form of “check”––to Mayor Rogelio Quino.

The money will be used to construct housing units for the victims of tropical storm “Sendong” in the province of Bukidnon.
