That is how, the ancient Greek poet Pindar (518 BC- 483 BC), de-

fined the city of Agrigento, to witness the splendor and power that

the city (at that time called Akragas) reached during the nearly four

centuries of Greek domination.

The splendor and power of Akragas are now part of history, but

Agrigento with its Valley of the Temples still continues to be one of

the most fascinating remains of the Hellenistic period.

Undisputed symbol of the ancient city is the archaeological com-

plex, including the Temple of Concordia, which is considered to be

one of the best preserved temples of the entire Greek world. The

city’s history is characterized by a succession of rulers, from the

Hellenistic civilization to the Roman period, from Arab incursions to

Norman domination.

Then Swabians, the Angioni, the Aragonese, the Spanish, the Sa-

voy, the Habsburgs and the Bourbons.

The city, as indeed all of Trinacria (former Greek name for Sicily,

alluding to the triangular shape of the island), is a real journey

through the millennial history, told in episodes.

Among its cultural treasures, Agrigento has a temple dedicated

to Demeter, the goddess of flowering. According to the ancient

Greeks, Demeter allowed the rebirth of life with the arrival of a

long summer season, which lasted for eight months.

The Hotel Hermitage was built in the early 1950s, on the site of a small

fishing village, by the Genoese aristocrat Paolo De Ferrari, after he fell in

love at a first sight with Biodola’s crystal-clear sea, the heart-wrenching
