…and welcome to the January edition of the Moreton Hall Directory. If you are reading this then phew! We survived the end of the world due to happen on Friday 21st December! But did we survive Christmas? Hopefully you all did and everyone had a lovely time. Where did that year go?

If you over-indulged a little with the Christmas goodies and the alcohol, then don’t despair! Our slimming clubs will help you on your way back to that summer figure before you know it, on pages 9 and 12. But if dieting isn’t for you, take a look at page 57 where our fitness trainer PT Joe has an exciting new boot camp that you can join, with lots of success stories to help get you motivated.

With the new year beginning, we still have another month or two (or three!) of winter weather, our fashion page on 42 has some cool, furry (or should I say warm) items to keep you snug when you’re out and about in the cold.

I’m definitely looking forward to a peaceful January, with no heavy shopping, drinking and eating, well my credit card will be enjoying the break! Until next month, Happy New Year to all our readers from everyone at the MHD office!

NEW YEAR NEW BODY! (Currently not the one you want?)

Well now is the time to make a decision that will transform your mind and body and WOW……. look at Lynn and see how, along with daughter Hollie, they lost 14 stone between them. This time last year they were feeling possibly like you are now.

Come to your local class and put your trust in us Rosemary Conley has been writing SUCCESSFUL, ACHIEVABLE diets for 40 years. At classes we understand how you feel, instructor Jo lost 5 stone herself, having spent 20 years being unfit and hating exercise. She now uses that experience to help members. The support you get at a Rosemary Conley Club is something you will not find elsewhere.

Jo understands that the classes need to be inspirational and FUN and carefully plans the optional 45 minutes of exercise to be suitable for everyone regardless of age or fitness.

After losing her weight the Rosemary Conley way Jo decided to train in Exercise and Nutrition with Rosemary and now runs 10 classes a week in this area.

During 2012 Jo has helped hundreds of members to lose weight and get fit, 3 of which have made it through to the National Slimmer of the Year Competition. There are only 20 winners across the country who have lost 168 stone between them on Rosemary’s diet and 3 are

Are you stuck inside a body that is feeling fed up and fat? Do you make time to exercise or put it off thinking it is for fit people? Have you tried lots of diets and been successful and then

put the lbs back on??

from Suffolk, this speaks volumes for the support that Jo gives to her members. Jo remembers that when you are overweight you can’t see a way out, especially if you’ve been that way for a long time. You really don’t believe that you can be slim and often the unhappiness at being overweight leads to comfort eating which just makes the problem worse as the lbs continue to creep on.

Doctors now advise that losing 10% of your current weight will significantly improve your health so look at losing half a stone or a stone at a time rather than thinking “I’ve got 5 stone to lose”. For fitness goals we recommend you listen to your body and stop when you have done enough, we encourage members to increase the amount they do each week. We have members from their teens to their 70’s. Some are fitter now than they have ever been, it really is suitable for all, we make sure everyone gets a good work out. Jo says “Try different things, just because you didn’t enjoy one form of exercise doesn’t mean that you won’t enjoy another. For me group exercise such as aerobics gives me such a buzz. The music makes me want to move and everyone in the class is only worried about what they are doing. I used to think everyone would look at me and I would be self conscious and NOW I choose to exercise for a living and I am looking for some new members to transform this year, whether you have half a stone or many stone to lose come and be part of my friendly class.”

Nature Watch by Woodland Ways On a mild and still winter’s

day, you may be lucky to see a small swarm of flying insects, dancing around each other around 1.5m to 2m high in your garden or in a sheltered open space. These are winter gnats, related to craneflies and completely harmless to humans and pets. Winter gnats are usually about six to eight millimetres in length with long transparent wings and six long thin legs. The dancers are all male, hoping to attract the attention of passing females. Winter is generally a poor time for insects, as there is little nectar or other food around. By specialising in winter flight, winter gnats have little competition from other insects, and they are completely safe from swallows and swifts which now are in sunny

Africa. Winter gnats are abundant throughout the year, but much more obvious in winter when there is less wildlife activity in the garden.

Female winter gnats lay their eggs in decaying vegetation or on fungal fruiting bodies. The young larvae live inside the decaying matter or fungi and fully emerge around spring time before it gets too warm and dry. Woodland Ways makes sure that it keeps dead wood in its woodlands, to provide decaying matter and fungi as habitat for winter gnats and many more species. Occasionally the adults are attracted to light, so at almost any time of year, if you see insect resembling a mosquito on the outside of your kitchen window it could well be a winter gnat.

Winter gnats

Why not join in with a Woodland Ways work party to help improve the Moreton Hall woods? No experience is needed and all are welcome; we’ll show you what to do. If you remember, just before Christmas someone broke into Christ Church, Moreton Hall, and stole our computer. There are many things we could learn from this, but two struck my heart. Firstly, how much we rely on computers, and we live in such a trusting environment on Moreton Hall we can get careless. Secondly, is the desperation of some people these days. It is very sad when somebody feels they need to steal a computer to earn a few pounds. Our hearts and our prayers of compassion go out to them.

On the other hand, it has been wonderful to receive so many messages of concern and support. It has also been fantastic that local Funeral Directors, Armstrong’s has replaced it for us. It is very good to know that the community comes together in times of crisis.

This leads me to the main theme about communities. As we look back over 2012, we have had a wonderful year with the Olympics, the Paralympics, and the Jubilee. As we look forward in 2013 to the prospect of a Royal baby, it is wonderful to see the nation so united and celebrating together.

But the year that lies ahead may seem rather bleak. Austerity is not over and there will be difficulties for so many families. I am particularly concerned that although unemployment is falling the sort of jobs people are getting do not pay the bills. There has to be a radical rethink in how people are remunerated for many hours of hard work.

However, although it is great to see communities draw together in celebration, what really brings people closer together is adversity.

When things are getting tough, that is when you find out who your real friends are. If in a time when we have not got as much as we once had we can still nonetheless share, and our giving and receiving means far more than when times are good.

St. Paul in his letter to the Philippians exhorts us to ‘rejoice in all circumstances’. That does not mean wearing a stupid grin on your face all the time, but rather to appreciate more fully acts of kindness and goodness in the midst of great adversity and hardship. That is really when community means the most, when we stand together and help each other. Sometimes we cannot really do much to help but the fact that somebody will speak to you, comfort you, pray for you, can make all the difference.

Perhaps best of all, God does know. At the beginning of this year it is worth knowing that God is there and can come into our lives. In the course of 2012 quite a few people found God has been there for them and have taken some very positive steps to getting closer to Him. It has been my delight as a clergyman to see

people’s lives completely changed. To see people who normally wore a frown wreathed now in smiles; to see them learn what it is to ‘rejoice in all circumstances’, to have His supernatural power flowing through their lives; and because of His grace and love to see circumstances change beyond all recognition.

So, whatever lies ahead for you in 2013, remember that you can do it with God. Doing it with God can make all the difference. Also, we can do it together. By coming together, whether it be in the food-bank, or in other ways, we can make a difference and it means so much to those who need it at this time.

Finally, there is this. Christ Church, Moreton Hall, along with the other caring agencies and charitable organisations on the estate are here to help. We are here to help because God in Christ has helped us. We want to share that love and concern with you all and help us all come through the dark days that lie ahead.

With every good wish,

Revd. Canon Jonathan Ford.

This term sees the retirement of a popular head teacher. Richard Rice who leaves Sebert Wood Community Primary, Bury St Edmunds after 22 years, having been appointed Headteacher on the 1st June 1990 just before the school first opened on the Moreton Hall estate. Over the following years he has led the school from strength to strength, and was awarded Outstanding at its last OFSTED in 2009. Richard’s first headship was in Suffolk at Stoke Ash Community Primary School in 1983. He was then head at Redgrave and Botesdale VC Primary School until his appointment as Headteacher of the new school – Sebert Wood - prior to its opening in September 1990. Since that time he has shaped the school to become the successful and happy place it is today. Over the years thousands of children have passed through the school. They left with lasting memories, not just of learning, but of the enjoyment they had at the school. Former pupils still talk fondly of Mr Rice’s puppet shows and of the snowball fights he organised. He has amazing relationships with the children and they are really sad to see him go.

Since September, come rain or shine, the Year 2 children at Abbots Green have been learning outdoors for one session a week. We call these sessions “Welly Wednesdays!”

“It was very cold on Welly Wednesday” said Oliver as we enjoyed the recent wintery weather. “We had to wrap up warm and put our wellies on.” said Emily. We then made our own natural icicles by collecting lots of interesting natural objects in pots. Then we added some water and string. We left our pots outside overnight to freeze. “It was really fun collecting all the natural objects!” said Will.

The next morning, we hung our icicles on trees in our woodland area. They looked so beautiful and shiny! Unfortunately our precious icicles melted on Friday morning. Even though we were very sad to see them go we still had a lot of fun.

Whats been happening at...Abbots Green Community Primary School

The school arranged several farewell events. The children have performed a special concert to the staff and fellow pupils. As a thank you for all Richard has contributed to the Moreton Hall Community, Councillor Beckwith funded a set of outdoor musical instruments, chosen as Mr Rice has a special interest in music. Staff arranged its installation in secret and it was unveiled by Mr Rice and Councillor Beckwith after the concert. After school the staff, ex-staff, colleagues, friends, governors, Friends of Sebert Wood School and fellow head teachers attended a tea party. Richard is planning to spend more time with his family and on his hobbies, but will continue to inspire and support colleagues as he works part time as an associate advisor for Suffolk Education. Mr Peter Dewhurst will be Headteacher at Sebert Wood from January 2013. He has just finished his post as Head of Primary at the British International School, Puxi, Shanghai. Prior to going to China, he was Headteacher at Hardwick Primary School, Bury St Edmunds.

have never been accused of being a

traditionalist, but even I was somewhat surprised when my boy announced he was to be a Playmobil Pirate in the Reception class Christmas play.

It’s not that I want a conventional nativity performance you understand (quite the opposite if I’m honest), but my wife and I were a little confused when he rattled off a list of what his classmates were to be in this show; a choo choo train, Joseph, the toy shop owner, singing snowflakes, three Kings... “But what about baby Jesus?” I tentatively asked. “Oh Daddy, don’t be silly. We have a pretend baby Jesus. A real one would be too noisy.” – a good point, well made.

It’s an intriguing trailer as to what lies ahead. I am struggling to figure out where a Playmobil

Pirate boy fits into this modern day take on the Christmas story? I bet he’s gets on rather well with the three Kings. I only hope he doesn’t pillage their valuables. As for the choo choo train, maybe the poor old donkey wasn’t up to it? It’s certainly got me guessing.

Before I even see the show, I will take my hat off to all the teachers involved in making it happen. Frankly, trying to get 2 kids to do what is asked of them is bad enough for me, let alone 50 of them! There have of course been some differences of creative opinions. The other day he was close to tears as he told us that he simply did not want his face painted – which I can totally understand. In the early stages of casting, it seems there was some confusion as he originally thought he had won a highly sought after role as a dancing snowflake. However, it seems this was a

misunderstanding, brought on by his, sometimes selective, hearing problems.

He tells us they are practising hard at school and seems remarkably relaxed about the fact PE lessons are now on hold until after the show. Occasionally he bursts into song which, on further questioning, it seems are actually sneak previews of the various pieces to be performed.

So his first (and let’s face it, probably last) venture into stage performance is due to start shortly, and will of course be a distant (hopefully magical) memory by the time this has landed on your door mat. I’m just hoping that he enjoys himself and isn’t that child in tears throughout, which I’m sure we can all remember is fairly standard fair at these productions. Come to think of it, wasn’t that usually me!?

Idon’t know about you, but for me, Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas

without the fabulous Christmas light display in Kembold Close on the Moreton Hall.

The Jones family have decorated their house for many years and raised lots and lots of money for charity in the process. And now they have been joined by the Crake family who live opposite who have their own amazing light display PLUS an actual snow machine which my kids were thoroughly obsessed with!

The Close had it’s own ‘light

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS LIGHT UP THE CLOSE

switch-on’ before Christmas, with tons of people turning up to watch the lights go on, complete with mulled wine and The Jones family all dressed as Santa.

Both houses have been raising money for charity again this year, The Jones’ charity is St Nicholas Hospice Care and The Crake Family is supporting St Edmundsbury Gatehouse Club, where dad Mark is a volunteer. By the time you are reading this, sadly they may have taken down the lights but if not, please try to pop along and give to both these well deserving charities.

OUR YOUNGSTERSWe never seem to hear the good things about our teenagers. I would like to congratulate 20, aged 13 plus teenagers who took part in the first Bury St Edmunds voluntary police cadet course.Over a course of ten weeks these youngsters underwent training on aspects of policing which included general knowledge of the force and drill work. The first eight weeks training took place in our youth club then the final weeks were held at the TA centre which afforded more space for marching. On Thursday the 13th December the group held

a passing out parade, where they were awarded their ID Cards by the Assistant Chief Constable for Suffolk Paul Marshall. I spoke to him after the parade and asked him how the Cadets would fit in with policing; he mentioned that they would benefit from events like Mayoral Civic duties, Remembrance parade and other events in and around the town. He also said that some of the cadets had indicated that they would eventually like to go on and join the police. What a wonderful start for them. Thanks also to Sgt Hill and his staff. Anyone interested contact Sgt Hill.

January 2013, who would believe it, we have come through the doom and gloom of the computer fiasco of 2000 and if you’re reading this, we have come through the end of the world 21/12/12. That being the case, A HAPPY NEW YEAR to one and all. I wonder what this year has in store for us?

JanuaryON Friday the 14th December my wife, myself and granddaughter attended King Edwards production of George Orwells “Animal Farm” and what a performance! These young people had so much

DRAMA AT ITS BEST talent, a captivating two hours of delightful entertainment. These youngsters played to a full house and received tumultuous applause at the end.Well done to the students, teachers and background crew.

ROYAL BRITISH LEGIONCalling all ex-service men and women, your legion need you. The branch meets on the second Thursday of each month in the Royal Anglian Club inside the TA centre on Newmarket Road. PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS

Bury East & West Safer Neighbourhood Team Officers are receiving an increasing number of concerns from residents regarding the behaviour of both pedestrians and motorists at pedestrian crossings. In particualr the crossing on Mount Road, close to the junctions with Downing Close and Winsford Road seems to attract its fair share of drivers who do not stop for pedestrians or pedestrians who step on to the crossing without due care.

The Highway Code gives the following advice to both motorists and pedestrians :-

Motorists – As you approach a zebra crossing

Look out for pedestrians waiting to cross and be ready to slow down or stop to let them cross

You MUST give way when a pedestrian has moved onto a crossing

Allow more time for stopping on wet or icy roads

Do not wave or use your horn to invite pedestrians across; this could be dangerous if another vehicle is approaching.

Be aware of pedestrians approaching from the side of the crossing.

Pedestrians :-

Always check that the traffic has stopped before you start to cross or push a pram onto a crossing

Always cross between the studs or over the zebra markings. Do not cross at the side of the crossing or on the zig-zag lines, as it can be dangerous.

Give traffic plenty of time to see you and to stop before you start to cross.

Be mindful that vehicles will need more time to stop when the road is slippery.

Wait until traffic has stopped from both directions or the road is clear before crossing.

COMMUNITY POLICENEWSLETTER

Remember that traffic does not have to stop until someone has moved onto the crossing.

Keep looking both ways, and listening, in case a driver or rider has not seen you and attempts to overtake a vehicle that has stopped.

You MUST NOT loiter on any type of crossing.

GRASS VERGES

Bury East & West Safer Neighbourhood Team Officers and Local Authorities are also receiving an increasing number of complaints regarding vehicles that park on grass verges. Whilst parking on the verge for vehicles under 7.5 tonne is not an offence, if the vehicle interferes with visibility at a junction or similar then we will take action for obstruction or dangerous parking. Also if the road has a parking restriction then this applies to the whole half of the highway where the signs/markings are and parking on an adjacent verge or footway is an offence. Particularly in bad weather, verges are damaged so if we can stop them becoming fully churned up it will help preserve the look of the estate.

Many Thanks for your continued support

Moreton Hall WI NewsIn time honoured tradition December is our Christmas party night, but this year it was also our 15th birthday! We perused the scrapbooks of old photos, press cuttings and articles about events over the last 15yrs and there were many familiar faces, minus a few wrinkles! Margaret and Sheryl’s hard work and skill were apparent here! We also had photos of competition entries and our winners. A good reminder of the diverse things we do and the places we have visited.

To celebrate, we started off with wine or juice to accompany our fish and chip supper. Then we had a beautiful birthday cake made by Sheryl and this was cut by our current and preceding two Presidents. This was shared with everyone along with our coffee. We finished off with a card and present game that produced a lot of laughter as members “stole” presents from each other, dictated by the cards. A fun evening and a good “kick start” to the Christmas festivities!

home&garden

201 2March was possibly the best month of the year, glorious sunshine barbecue and shorts weather and gardeners were thinking of the need to plant drought tolerant shrubs such as olive trees. Where did it all go wrong! Well seemingly when there was an announcement of a hose pipe ban, as it feels as if it has rained every since. As a result garden shrubs and bushes put on a lot of growth and slugs and snails were prolific! A general lack of sunshine meant many plants and vegetables were not pollinated by the bees.

201 3Perhaps you are thinking of starting gardening for the first time - here are a few steps to beginning a garden.

l Assess Your Space Consider if you are going to plant in garden beds and borders or raised beds or containers. What

kind of sun does the area get? Almost all vegetables and most flowers need a good amount of full sunshine each day. Try to sketch a plan of your new garden, this will help you figure out how much of each plant you can grow and you can also consider succession planting.

l Figure Out What You Want to Grow List everything you want to grow. With the price of food rising you might want to grow

vegetables. But whether you want to grow herbs, fruit or flowers have a look at some gardening books, surf the web or get 1-2 of those free garden seed catalogues and set out a little plan.

l Clear the ground On fine days in winter dig over your garden border or vegetable border. Remove all the

perennial weeds.

l Improve the soil Give your soil a boost by adding a 2- to 3-inch layer of compost, decayed leaves, dry grass

clippings, or old manure into a trench. A trench can be about a spade deep and wide. All of your vegetable peelings can go into this trench.

Wha t to do in your garden in Janu aryJanuary is named after the Roman god Janus, who was always shown as having two heads. He looked back to the last year and forward to the new one. Following in the footsteps of Janus here is my review of the year and a look forward to 2013.

l Buying Seeds/Plants If you made a list of what you want to grow

take this with you and visit garden centres and nurseries to buy your plants and seeds. Obviously you need to be aware of the growing season. Tomatoes and most annual flowers are not planted until the danger of frost has passed. Mid Spring is a good times to plant perennial flowers.

l Water Seedlings Seedlings should never dry out, so water daily

while they are small. Taper off as the plants get larger.

l Mulch To help keep weeds out and water in, cover

the soil with a couple of inches of mulch. For a vegetable garden use manure or peat. For perennials, use a longer-lasting mulch, such as bark chips.

l Maintain your Garden Little and often is the best way to go to keep

on top of weeds and water plants.

l Enjoy Enjoy the fruits of your labour. The exercise

will have done you good and nothing tastes quite as good as home grown fruit and veg.

WINTER ACONITES

Winter aconites beam a golden

glow into the garden at a time

when the sun rarely breaks

through the clouds. One of

the earliest flowers to appear

and most common of these

small buttercup relatives

is Eranthis hyemalis. They grow well

together with snowdrops and flower reliably

where little else will grow. Plant under trees,

en masse for a colourful carpet of flowers. They

flourish in any reasonably fertile soil, in full sun

but do particularly well in chalky soil. They’re

vigorous and will seed and spread.

Pauls Plant of the Month

Moreton HallCommunity Centre @ the centre for U

Christmas and New Year’s Eve are over and all of us at the Moreton Hall Club are looking forward to a very busy and successful 2013. We have some exciting events planned throughout the year ahead as well as some news that will breathe new life into the club.

The children’s Christmas party was a tremendous success, with 60 children enjoying games and party food before raising the roof to call in a very busy Father Christmas. He presented selection boxes to the children and our thanks to Tesco Express for their donation.

The Grand Christmas draw took place the next day with over 40 prizes to be won. The top 3 prizes and winners were: iPad 3 – J Procter, Kindle Fire – G Grimwood and Digital Camera – P Munday.

A massive thank you to all those who helped over the weekend with those two events.

During January we have the first of what we hope will become regular events.

On Saturday 12th Phil will be hosting his famous movie quiz with a curry. Quizzes will then be held on the second Saturday of every other month. We will be looking to provide live music the second Saturday of the month in which we do not have a quiz.

From Monday 14th, 10am to 1.30pm the club will open up every Monday. We will be offering refreshments to our members and their guests who would just like to pop in for a chat with fellow members.

Sunday 20th we will be serving the first of a regular Sunday roast. This will initially be

once a month. Look out for further details.

On Saturday 2nd February we have a darts exhibition with Kevin Painter and Jamie Caven. Both have just played in the 2013 PDC World Championship. Tickets for this evening are £12.50 per adult and £5 for under 16’s. The price includes a meal and entry into a draw to win a leg of darts against either pro. Tickets are available from the club and Robert’s Barbers in St John’s Street. Plus on the Sunday before at 4pm there will be a free to enter knockout tournament. The winner and runner up will win the opportunity to play the pros.

On Sunday 3rd February there will be a FIFA 2013 tournament, further details to follow.

Further details about all these events will be available in the club, on twitter, facebook and on our website.

From the 1st of January our membership structure changes. As well as a paid membership, free memberships will be offered but this type of membership will incur a higher drinks tariff. So if you have never visited the club room, within the community centre, there is nothing to stop you now. The club has been refurbished during 2012 and improvements being made all the time. Membership forms are available in the club and 2013 prices are £12.50 per couple/ family with children under 18yrs, £6.25 for a single and over 65’s FOC.

At the time of writing this article the Sunday members draw has not been won and the prize fund stands at £85. This is drawn every Sunday and if the drawn member is present the cash prize is won. If not the prize fund rolls over to the next week and an additional sum added.

The committee really hope to see all our current members and lots of new faces during 2013, and we wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year.

LIFE OF PIDirector: Ang LeeStarring: Irrfan Khan, Suraj Sharma, Ayush Tandon, Gerard Depardieu, Rafe Spall, Adil Hussain, Tabu

A visually stunning, magical journey of adventure involving a young castaway and a Bengal tiger! Piscine Molitor Patel (Suraj Sharma), known to everyone as Pi, was raised in Pondicherry, India, during the 1970s. His rich and unusual upbringing took place in a zoo owned by his father (Adil Hussain), who taught him that animals do not think like humans. Now India is undergoing a dramatic upheaval, so the Patels decide to emigrate to Canada with 17-year-old Pi and some of their beasts. But a terrible storm causes their ship to sink and Pi is cast adrift aboard a raft with his mortal enemy: a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker! Yann Martel’s novel was a massive critical and commercial hit, selling more than seven million copies and winning the 2001 Man Booker Prize. Now this much-loved spiritual fable of survival has been brought vividly to the screen by visionary director Ang Lee, who gave us ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ and ‘Brokeback Mountain’

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Director: Peter JacksonStarring: Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, Andy Serkis, Richard Armitage

The three films tell a continuous story set in Middle-earth 60 years before “The Lord of the Rings,” which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar®-winning “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.” The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever...Gollum.

Silver Linings Playbook Director: David O. RussellStarring: Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro, Jennifer Lawrence, Jacki Weaver, Chris Tucker

Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence star in a quirky, poignant comedy about two damaged people rebuilding their lives. Former schoolteacher Pat Solitano (Bradley Cooper) is released from a state psychiatric institution into the care of his mother (Jacki Weaver) and father (Robert DeNiro). Despite having lost his house, his job and his wife, optimistic Pat remains determined to seek silver linings. But reuniting with his wife proves a challenge, especially as she’s filed a restraining order against him. Then he meets the mysterious Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), a young widow who’s just as volatile and medicated as himself. She agrees to help blunt and tactless Pat rebuild his marriage, but has an odd favour to ask in return. Based on the bestselling novel by Matthew Quick, this heartfelt romantic comedy from ‘Flirting with Disaster’ and ‘The Fighter’ director David O. Russell gets brilliant performances from a powerhouse cast.

12 cause related marketingCause related marketing can add value to your business and enhance customer loyalty. Is there a cause or charity you could link up with? A good example of this is the X-Factors winners single, cause related marketing at it’s very best.

13 packaging & labels

If you’re producing a product for retail, then your product packaging and labels are often the first and only thing your customers see. Is it selling your product properly? Or could it be doing more to stand out on the shelf?

14 flexibility

How flexible is your company? You’ll please more customers if you can be a little flexible to meet their needs. That might mean staying late one night to meet their deadline, or offering them different ways/terms to pay their account. Be flexible, it can help with customer loyalty.

brought to you by gemma procter, creative director at the pit groupGemma has over 18 years experience in graphic design and marketing – working with some of the leading brands in the country.

I n the last issue of The Moreton Hall Directory, we gave you the first 1-11 in our list of 101

marketing activities for your business.

Whatever size business you run (or would like to run), whether it’s a start up or a large scale company,

most companies should be doing at least some of these activities on a daily basis to effectively market their business.

The idea is to pick and choose which items are revelant to you, and because some marketing activities

cost you absolutely nothing (other than a little time), there are tons of opportunities to get your company name out there.

Here’s the next installment in the list, look out for more in next month’s issue...

15 word-of-mouth

For many of the businesses we work with, this is one of THE best forms of marketing. Making sure every single aspect of your customers experience is spot on, will encourage people to recommend you to their friends. Even more important now with social media, everyone’s talking – make sure they’re saying the right things.

16 community involvementIs your business involved in it’s local community? Whether it’s the area we live in, or the street we work in - there are plenty of opportunities to get involved and get your company name known.

17 clean & tidy premises

If your business has customers through it’s doors, first impressions about where you work say a lot about your business. It doesn’t take much to make it clean and tidy and more appealing to clients.

18 cross promotionWhether you sell a product or a service, cross promotion is a great way to up-sell. Many of your customers may not even know the other items/services you offer so it’s always worth mentioning them.

19 offer a guarantee

If it’s applicable to your business, offering a guarantee or a warranty for goods can give customers a huge amount of peace of mind.

20 direct sales

Okay, direct sales isn’t for everyone, door to door salespeople are a bit of a thing of the past, however there are other ways to sell directly, could your product be made available as a party plan?

21 gift vouchersGift vouchers make up a huge percentage of Christmas retail sales, so if you’re in retail and are not offering vouchers, you’re missing out.

Look out for more tips in next month’s issue…

Michael Wangermann, a Personal Injury Partner at Ashton KCJ Solicitors, highlights new proposals due to come into effect this year, which will impact on genuine accident victims.

As Personal Injury solicitors, we are concerned about proposals due to come into effect this April, which will make it more difficult for people who suffer genuine injuries in accidents to obtain compensation.

The aim behind the proposals is to cut drastically, and fix, the legal costs of pursuing claims on behalf of innocent accident victims. These changes will immediately impact upon cases valued up to £25,000. As a result it will no longer be practical for some lawyers to take on such cases.

People may also find that the very organisations paying their compensation (the insurers) will also be the ones telling them how much they should receive. This clearly cannot be right as most members of the public will not know whether the offer is fair. The likely outcome is that fewer victims will seek to bring claims and seek treatment through the claim process, meaning the already under resourced NHS will have to bear the cost of treating them.

Sadly, it is statistically likely that the changes will affect someone you care about at some point. Whilst at Ashton KCJ, we are committed to providing the best possible advice and support to our clients, if the proposals go through as they stand, they will have a catastrophic effect on access to justice for thousands of genuine accident victims. To support the call for the Government to think again, please go to: http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/42300

Who else wants to eat MORE, Exercise LESS and STILL lose weight?Having already transformed the lives, health and bodies of 200+ local people, Bury St Edmund’s ONLY results guaranteed health, fitness and well-being programme is set to cause a storm on Moreton Hall.

Created by local health and weight loss coach Mark Nicol, BuryBootcamp promises to put an end to your years of diet frustration.

BuryBootcamp’s exclusive ‘Body Transformation Formula’ has a proven track record of helping those who feel they’ve already tried everything, to drop at least a clothes size and 15lbs (on average) in just 5-weeks, not by dishing out military style beastings and starvation, but by offering safe, easy to follow lifestyle, healthy eating and exercise education.

Hosted by Neil Hillier and Joe Sadler, the Moreton Hall branch of BuryBootcamp, has been running for two months and has already seen more than 40 local residents experience their own ‘Body Transformation’.

Sign up for BuryBootcamp’s 5-week coaching programme and you’ll discover:

• Thesecretstoachievingaslim, tonedbody by exercising LESS than most people

• Howtoshiftyou’rebingowingsandmuffintop by eating MORE

• WhyyouDONOTneedtocountcaloriesor diet to lose weight

• Howtoimproveyoursleepandwhyithelps weight loss

• HowtoFINALLYbreakfreefromyo-yodieting

This month I am working with Mark Nicol to help you start the new year healthily with Bury Bootcamp.

Here what some of BuryBootcamp’s recent members have to say about the programme...

Helen: I have lost a total of 19inches, including 5 inches off my hips, and also 16lb on the scales in 10weeks....... it would have probably taken me 6 months to do that with the yo-yo dieting, and quite possibly i would have put on the same amount over Xmas too, but thanks to BuryBootcamp i am comitted

and focused on the healthier ME that i am becoming....... i NEVER would have thought 10weeks ago that i would be here.

Stuart: I had gradually put on weight over the last few years and was desperate not to be “fat at 40”.

BuryBootcamp has changed everything – great training sessions, easy to follow nutrition programme and lots of support. I’ve lost more than 2-stones and am absolutely hooked!

Susanne: “I was tense and stressed and put everyone and everything else first. But BuryBootcamp has brought a change in mental attitude, a new approach to food and a regular exercise regime.

I’ve lost more than 16lbs and more than 12inches…I can finally throw away the size 16 clothes”

Tracey: I absolutely love how accessible the BuryBootcamp programme is...anyone can do it and see great results.

I lost an incredible 10lbs and 14inches in under a month and most importantly feel so much healthier

David: At BuryBootcamp I’ve been amazed by just how fit I got in such a short time and the healthy eating plan has completely changed how I eat and I feel so much better for it.

“Burybootcamp has made it possible for me to enjoy a whole new healthier way of life. I’m now full of confidence, fitter and have found motivation within myself that I never knew existed.” Vanessa

The flu vaccine has a relatively good track record of safety, although the niggling side-effects—which are every bit as distressing as the flu itself—appear to be all too commonplace. There’s a more worrying concern, however: it doesn’t really work!! For full details of the Cochrane Collaboration, an independent and authoritative medical research group, which carried out a review of studies looking at the effectiveness of various flu shots visit www.wddty.com or Google “Flu Trials Cochrane Collaboration”. Be amazed that the majority of info given out by the NHS is from trials sponsored by the drug manufacturers themselves!! But because people assume the Flu Vaccineistheonlywaytoprotect themselves, they are doing very little otherwise to improve their immune systems. As a result, they are left more open to other diseases too, some of which can be lethal in the elderly. Perhaps, we would do better by promoting personal responsibility for good health through an improved diet and lifestyle. How to protect yourself? If the vaccines don’t work, what can you do to protect yourself and your family—especially elderly relatives—from the seasonal flu? The key is prevention, of course, and that comes down to a

healthy immune system. Here are some of the things you can start introducing into your daily life today. • Exercise. Regular aerobic

exercise is a good way to ward off colds and flu. People who do at least 20 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise—such as jogging, biking or swimming—on five or more days per week tend to suffer less from cold and flu symptoms than those who exercise just one day a week.

• Vitamin C. This antioxidant vitamin can significantly reduce cold or flu duration and severity (Cochrane Database Syst Rev, 2007; 3: CD000980).

• Zinc. If you act fast, taking zinc—as a lozenge, syrup or tablet—can reduce the duration and severity of a cold. The results of 13 trials, involving nearly 1000 people, showed that those who took zinc within 24 hours of their symptoms starting had shorter and milder colds than those who didn’t take the mineral (Cochrane Database Syst Rev, 2011; 2: CD001364).

• Vitamin D. The ‘sunshine vitamin’ may be useful for reducing the risk of colds and flu. In a large-scale US study, people with the lowest levels of vitamin D reported having significantly more recent colds or bouts of flu. The risks were highest in those with chronic

This issue we look at natural ways of FLU prevention.respiratory disorders, such as asthma and emphysema (Arch Intern Med, 2009; 169: 384–90).

• Nasal irrigation. Saline nasal irrigation (SNI), where a saltwater solution is used to flush out the nasal passages, could be a useful weapon against colds and flu. This is actually a well-known yogi techniqueBTW!

• Probiotics. Taking doses of healthy bacteria through yoghurt and supplements was associated with 12-per-cent fewer acute upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs), such as colds and flu, compared with a placebo Propolis. This gummy substance—collected by honeybees from leaf buds and tree bark—may be helpful for preventing colds and shortening their duration if you catchone(RomJVirol,1995;46: 115–33).

• Stress reduction. Stress-management techniques, such as guided imagery, meditation and yoga, may be effective for reducing cold and flu symptoms (J Psychosom Res, 2001; 51: 369–77, 721–8).

• Heat. Taking regular saunas may cut your chances of catching a cold, an Austrian study suggests. Fifty volunteers were split into a sauna-bath group and a no-sauna control group. After six months, the sauna group had considerably fewer colds. Could HOT YOGA have the same effect maybe? (Ann Med, 1990; 22: 225–7).

By Carole Baker Director, The Self Centre

If you do get the flu, you can reduce its severity by trying these herbal remedies:

• Echinacea. Echinacea purpurea reduces cold symptoms and their duration, and appears to be effective for treating flu symptoms too. For best results, take Echinacea at the first signs of illness (J Altern Complement Med, 2000; 6: 327–34).

•Garlic. In a UK trial of 146 volunteers, one capsule per day of an allicin-containing garlic supplement led to 63-per-cent fewer colds and 70-per-cent fewer sick days compared with those taking a placebo (Adv Ther, 2001; 18: 189–93).

•Ginseng. In a randomized, double-blind placebo-

controlled trial of 227 patients vaccinated against the flu, those who took 100 mg/day of a ginseng extract (Panax ginseng) for 12 weeks reduced their frequency of colds and flu while increasing their immune response (Drugs Exp Clin Res, 1996; 22: 65–72).

• Astragalus. This herb has traditionally been used as a tonic and treatment for colds and flu either alone or in combination with other herbs.

• Chinese herbals. The Chinese herbal remedy Ma Xing Shi Gan-Yin Qiao San, which is made up of 12 herbs, was more effective than Tamiflu (oseltamivir) at lowering febrile temperatures in people with the flu (Ann Intern Med, 2011; 155: 217–25).
