The Cruisin' Tigers GTO Club is “the” GTO non-regional specialty chapter of Pontiac-Oakland Club International (POCI), the premier national organization for Pontiac, Oakland & GMC enthusiasts. Why Join POCI? The Pontiac-Oakland Club International, the world’s oldest and largest organiza-tion (over 8,800 strong) of Pontiac enthusiasts, is devoted to the restoration and preservation of Pon-tiac, Oakland and GMC vehicles. The POCI promotes the preservation and accurate restoration of these vehicles through its various services, publications and events. Membership in POCI allows access to a vast pool of information, experience and parts resources. Local and specialty chapters are also available to further the POCI membership experience. $35 annually for U.S. membership. . Smoke Signals POCI’s full-color, monthly magazine, Smoke Signals, is devoted to Pontiac, Oak-land and GMC vehicles and their owners. It contains owner profiles, event coverage, technical data and restoration tips. You will find stories about our members and their vehicles, along with perfor-mance articles and news of chapter activities across the USA, Canada and around the world. The Classified section provides the membership with a forum for the exchange of parts, information and

vehicle-related items. Ads from members, whether for sale or wanted, include parts, sales and service literature, and promotional items as well as complete cars. Classified advertising privileges are extended to members only - FREE of charge. Only Pontiac, Oakland and GMC related, non-commercial items are permitted. Web Site: www.poci.org The newly updated web site is a wealth of information for members: registration forms, tech fo-rums, chapter news, event listings, convention information, online classifieds, ID codes, links to an on-line member forum, many vendors and sponsors- the list goes on and on. Members can also access on-line POCI member information including name, phone number and vehicles owned. The website is constantly adding new and useful information. Credit cards ac-cepted include: VISA, Master Card & Discover. Technical Advisors The POCI Technical Advisor program has been a great success and continues to grow as member-ship expands and new needs arise. These advisors are board-appointed members possessing expertise in a particular ar-ea. Questions from correct paint and upholstery, to mechanical rebuilds, to performance issues, can be addressed by PO-CI technical advisors. Library The POCI library is a massive collection of Pontiac, Oakland and GMC literature, unlike any other, anywhere else. It contains valuable technical data (manuals, engineering reports, etc.) as well as marketing and sales information (brochures, posters, photos, material samples, etc.) All this is available to our members. Materials cannot be sent out, so photocopies are available at a modest cost. POCI Convention This is the gala event of the year for POCI, attracting hundreds of members and their cars from all over the world. The convention rotates annually to various locations throughout the US and is jointly sponsored by the POCI and the POCI chapter servicing the area or a POCI Specialty Chapter.

Club History and Mission: The Cruisin’ Tigers GTO Club was founded in April 1989 by six GTO enthusiasts. This club has grown into the GTO non-regional specialty chapter for Pontiac Oakland Club International (POCI). The Cruisin’ Ti-gers is a not for profit club and is dedicated to the promotion and preser-vation of Pontiac’s ultimate muscle car... The GTO. The club acts as a source of information to its members through monthly meetings, a tech advisory staff and club website. The club welcomes anyone with stock, modified or an interest in The Pontiac GTO to join. Ownership of a GTO is not a membership require-ment. Club meetings are held the third Saturday of every month and start at 4:00. Members are encouraged to bring their cars to monthly meetings. Club Events: In addition to monthly meetings; the club sponsors cruises, annual pic-nics, and the club’s annual car show, The Indian Uprising. Members and their families can enjoy organized activities with other GTO enthusiasts. Membership: Membership dues are paid annually and collected April 1st. Dues are $30.00 and are subject to a prorated amount for new members. Tiger News: Members in good standing receive the club’s monthly newsletter Tiger News. In addition to free classified ads, members are encouraged to sub-mit articles, tech columns and club event pictures. Deadlines for all sub-missions to the newsletter are the first of the month. Editor Update

As you know, Classifieds run here and the website., with the start of the new year (season), I’m wip-ing out all prior ads, that came in during 2016. I have a few new classified that came in, do far in 2017, plus the sticky-note board from the February meeting. I will print pictures on a space allowed basis. What does that mean? Now, when the ads are light, I’ll put the pictures in, later in the sum-mer, I may drop the pictures as space may be tight. Ads will run a minimum of 3 months, again, space will determine and/or editor discretion. A note to advertisers: renewal requests will also be going out this month for the coming year. I’d like you to review and update your artwork as appropriate. Thank you, The Editor

...passing of Ron Klomp, Cruisin’ Tiger #53

We were recently informed by his family that long time Cruisin’ Tiger, Ron Klomp, has passed away.

Ron joined the club in September, 1989. He had a white on white 1967 GTO hardtop.

The below is from his daughter, Jenni.

Just received the new Tiger News this morning in my email to print it out like I always do for my dad. I wanted to let you know he passed away in January. I know the renewal comes up soon and my mom (Henrietta), brother (Kevin) and I would like to continue receiving Tiger News as his GTO is staying in our family. My mom will still mail in a check like she always does. I know he rarely made it to any of your events or shows but he still felt a part of the club with Tiger News. He proudly displayed his white Crusin' Tigers white satin jacket in the car and tiger stuffed ani-mals at our little local car shows. Whenever he had questions, issues, or work to be done on the car, you all were always there. Thank you for that. Have a great day, Jenni Boyd

What a nice statement from Jenni. We are very sorry to hear about your father, he did make it to a fair number of our earli-er events, and for all you new guys, yes, we had white jack-ets at one time.

President’s Page by Randy Ray

Admit the Truth. Don’t overthink it. Those are 2 rules I try to live by. Its pretty simple, admit the truth, if you can’t be honest with yourself, well, you know the rest. The other one is, don’t overthink it. Don’t make things complex if they don’t need to be. Saw a great quote by a retired Admiral. “If a plan can be misunderstood, it will be misunderstood”.

So, where am I going with this. The racing world just got done with the Daytona 500, and the news-papers were lamenting the decline of NASCAR. Mostly due to bad TV ratings and attendance be-ing down. The follow up articles are in the vein of NASCAR management doesn’t care, or is too stubborn to address it. I concur mostly, so, once again, NASCAR is tweaking the points method for a Championship and messing somewhat with the aero effects on the car. How to fix a lot of issues, however, can be answered in the photos here.

First, the totally bad ass Pontiacs above, all canted over in preparation of the high banks at Dayto-

na. Those things are just mean looking, then David Pearson’s Ford Torino. The cars are actually

sort of stock. Admit the Truth—NASCAR was complicit in allowing modifications in the interest of

greater speed. The teams sold them that certain(?) modifications would allow faster speeds and/or

greater safety. NASCAR wanted the cars faster as it made better headlines. The Pearson car

there is a 68, just before rules started to slow the cars down. 1969 and 1970 saw the wing cars

come in, and then they were gone by 71, also big blocks were gone in 71.

So, here we are in 2017, one thing that can’t be changed is, and this is a hard one to admit—is eve-

rytime these cars went faster, was THE VERY FIRST TIME, and that creates excitement all by it-

self. The fastest lap at x track, new track record, first 150 mph qualifying, first 200, etc. So, now

what. How about running STOCK CARS? Like it says in the name. Not some template car. Each

manufacturer has a very fast car now, Camaro, Mustang, Challenger. If you don’t have a rear drive

car that can run with them, tough—adios Toyota. Look at the 1962 Pontiacs above, daylight under

the car, stock ride height. Look at Pearson’s car, has about 1” of factory spoiler (really just an up-

tick in the trunklid). Prescription for the boys in Daytona—real cars, not template cars, stock ride

height, no or factory spoiler only, and for good measure take some tire width away. Boom, cars you

can recognize, good for fans, and manufacturers, speeds become manageable and put the driver

back in control, good for NASCAR. Don’t over think it.

Happy Cruisin,

Randy’

Old and New—this month we feature; Ken Smith

What a wonderful world we live in… classic muscle cars & new muscle cars. I was a Pontiac owner most of my life and when it came time in 2014 for me to trade up from my 2008 Pontiac G-5 there were no Pontiacs to look at. Remember that Pontiac left me, I didn’t bail on them. So I went to my second love, which was the Plymouth ‘Cuda or the Dodge Challenger. And since Chrysler Motors shut down their division that made the ‘Cuda that narrowed the playing field to the Dodge Challeng-er. I had the option of purchasing a 6 cylinder Challenger (in black) or a Hemi Challenger R/T (in black). Can you guess which one a tripower GTO owner would lean towards?

I have fun cruisin’ year round. The Challenger is my open road cruiser. I have driven it to Sarasota,

FL three times. I can do that trip of 1300 miles in 18 hours. The greatest features of the new car

are: the 375 HP 5.7 Liter Hemi, the GPS, the sound system (that has a 40 GB hard drive to store my

favorite oldies), the body style (that just screams 1970’s muscle), and heated front seats (for winter

time cruisin’). My ’64 black GTO hardtop comes out only when the weather is good and is my gear

jamming 4- speed, with three two barrel Rochesters and a 355 differential. My GTO is my short dis-

tance cruiser (which includes a drive to Pontiac, IL annually to the Pontiac Museum). My two cars

affect the age groups differently… anyone under 30 enjoys the Challenger and above that age cate-

gory loves the classic GTO. Me? I love ‘em both!

Meeting Minutes by Mark Balinski

Meeting minutes from Saturday Feb 18th

Meeting kicked off at 4:00 pm sharp. Randy Ray welcomed everyone to the first club meeting of 2017. Due to the unusually warm February temperatures and clear roads, there was a great showing of cars in the Mr. Beef and Pizza parking lot. There were three GTOs, two G8’s and two LeMans. Randy reviewed the board elections. Eric Carlsen was re-elected as 1

st Vice President. Mark

Grimmenga was re-elected as Chairman of the board. Ed Dreksler returns to the club as a Board officer (Director). Rick Last, Paul Weinstein, Ken Smith, Nick Spensieri and Bob Zeiger remain on the board. John Campbell has moved to Indiana but remains as the club Treasurer. The club sec-retary spot formally held by Mike Brandt is open. The club is currently looking for a Secretary. Even if you can volunteer for one month at a time your assistance is greatly appreciated. Please consider volunteering your time! Randy mentioned that the BPOC swap meet was taking place on Sunday February 19

th. Ric Mur-

phy had extra table space at the swap meet and offered it up to other club members. The upcoming March meeting on March 18

th will host a special guest. Dan Purcell from Purcell

Performance and Restoration will speak to the club. In September we will conduct an off-site club meeting at Performance and Restoration in Elburn, IL. In April we will host our newest charity As-sociation of Horizon. In May members are encouraged to attend the Tri Power Automotive dust off in Libertyville. Our club will also be joining the Midwest Firebirds club for Cars and Coffee twice a month early on Saturday mornings. Stay tuned. More details to come on all of these events! Other upcoming events include GTOAA National in Springfield IL June 27

th through July 1

st. There

will be many club members joining. If interested in attending please let us know at the March meet-ing. The Woodward Dream Cruise is the 3

rd weekend of August. Again there will be several club

members attending. Randy discussed the Single Plate Initiative that the State of Illinois is considering. Links outlining the plan will be included in next month’s newsletter. The ads in the Tiger newsletter are being wiped out as some have been listed for quite some time now. We are starting fresh for 2017. POCI President Wayne Beran reminded everyone to vote for POCI board members. Awards go to Chapters that submit the most ballots. The National POCI convention will be held in Fort Worth Texas July 11-15

th.

The printed Tiger Newsletters are now being placed in an envelope for ease of mailing and reduced

mailing costs. The newsletter will go 100% digital (emailed) in 2018. Until then, paper copies of the

Newsletter will remain available for $2.00 at club meetings.

Meeting Minutes—cont’d. by Mark Balinski

Mark Grimmenga informed attendees that the Newsletter Editor position has been handled by Randy Ray since October 2015. This job needs to be filled by another club member. Randy needs a break! With the advent of the electronic newsletter in 2018, this position will become much more manageable. We are looking for a volunteer to take over this position. Randy can provide more details regarding the requirements of the job. Become more involved with the club and build relationships with other club members by volunteering for this position! The club board meeting was held on January 21

st. During that meeting Mark Grimmenga was re-

elected as Chairman of the Board. Ed Dreksler returned to the board as well. The club’s 12 year old computer died. The Board approved a new laptop for the Treasurer. The board also ap-proved the purchase of 7 tablets. These will be used to streamline the registration process for the Indian Uprising – for “day of” registrations. Club dues will remain at $30 per year, $60 for a 2 year membership and $85 for a three year membership. The Christmas party will remain free for 2018 (more details will be provided prior to the party). During the board meeting it was also decided that the Association of Horizon would replace the Comfort Dogs as our charity. This was decided because the club wants to focus on local charities. Membership cards will no longer be printed to reduce club expenses. The club roster will contin-ue to be printed and distributed. Ken Smith provided a member count update. Currently the club is at 270 members. Our mem-bers reside in 18 states. We also have members in Sweden, Australia and 2 Canadian provinc-es!! Club membership renewal date is April 5

th! The renewal fee is $30. If you want to receive a print-

ed newsletter the club membership is $50. The deadline to get your membership fee submitted is April 30

th.

Paul Weinstein provided an update on the club website. There will be a NEW member’s only sec-tion. Paul is working very closely with Tim Dye to obtain access to the Pontiac Museum’s vast library. By March 31

st the site will provide access to this reference library. We will be the ONLY

club that has access to this material. Details will be provided that will instruct members how to create an account to login into this section. There will also be access to the Tiger Newsletters da-ting back to at least 1999. Don Keefe will be supplying access to a never seen before reference library. The old reference library will be completely replaced. Paul provided an update on the Uprising. Forms for Uprising license plates are now available. Order your license plates now before they are all gone! The money raised by the plates go to our kid’s charity. The indoor arena is already 50% sold out!! This is the earliest that we have reached the 50% mark. Register now if you want an indoor spot this year. We expect that we will certainly sell out spaces this year. Tents will be allowed at this year’s Uprising but they MUST be weighted down. Paul also created

a dedicated website for the Uprising. Please visit www.theindianuprising.com . This link will take

you directly to the Uprising website.

This year the club will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Firebird, the 40

th anniversary of the Can

Am and the 40th anniversary of the Bandit Trans Am. The Midwest Firebirds are joining and assist-

ing us with this year’s Uprising. We are expecting a huge showing of Firebirds this year. Expect to see 550-600 cars for this year’s event! Paul reviewed the new digital registration process for the Uprising. Attendees that register the day of the event will now be able to enter their registration information on tablets as they drive into the Uprising. This digital process will greatly improve and streamline the process. We are still looking for Sponsors. Sponsorship forms are now available. Please assist the club in finding sponsors. Ask any business that you have a relationship with. Eric Carlsen pointed out that Wayne Berans – President of POCI - is a Cruisin’ Tigers club member and he is usually in attendance at our club meetings. Eric reminded everyone to become members of POCI. The Smoke Signal magazine is a great benefit of becoming a member of POCI. Our club (Ken Smith) received the 2014 Golden Quill award for the Tiger News . We also received the 2015 Golden Quill award for the Tiger News (Ken Smith, Nicole & Paul Lyczak, and Randy Ray). Congratulations! Randy mentioned that Mecum auctions is now advertising in USA Today. This is a testament to how our passion and hobby is taking off. If you haven’t attended a Mecum auction it is an event to behold. The local Mecum auction is held in Schaumburg in October but the larger auctions are hosted in Indianapolis (May) and Kissimmee Fl (this event was already held in January). Bill Nawrot mentioned that Western Springs is looking for Classic cars to participate in their Memo-rial Day parade. There is also a St Patrick’s day parade on March 5

th in Countryside. They are al-

so looking for cars to participate in their parade. The 50/50 drawing of $134 was won by Tom Kilis. The “have to be here” drawing was at $651.50. The member drawn was member #905 – Kevin Callahan. Kevin was not in attendance at the meet-ing so the winnings roll over. Ric Murphy has some discontinued Meguiar’s products for sale. If interested, please contact him. Lastly there was a vintage tee shirt that was raffled off…the winner was Bob Studt. The meeting ended at 5:03 pm.

New Event – we are officially going to participate with the Midwest Firebirds in their Cars and Coffee

events. The concept is simple, from 7:30 to 9:00 on the second and fourth Saturday of every month

you can meet up with other gearheads at a Starbucks somewhere near you. Locations at the bottom

of the page. Nothing formal, but gives an opportunity to get your ride out, go somewhere, and not kill

a whole day. Yes, its Starbucks, keeps it simple. Starts in May!
