In 2014 the city of Sochi in Russia is hosting the Winter Olympics. Some very lucky athletes will win ‘meteorite medal’ during the event. The extra special medals will be awarded to the seven athletes who win gold medal on February 15th, 2014, to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the meteor’s fall.
- On Feb. 15, 2012 some of the meteorite rocks fell to Earth in the city of Chelyabinsk, Russia.- A meteorite is a rock that comes to Earth from space. Every year, thousands of asteroids and meteoroids streak past our planet. Most of the ones headed for Earth simply burn up in our atmosphere.

The ‘meteorite medal’ features Sochi 2014′s mosaic of designs highlighting the cultures within the Russian federation, inset beneath a gold, silver, or bronze casing.
The official name of the games is engraved in Russian, English and French along the rim. The front side highlights the Olympic rings while the name of the event is engraved on the reverse side.
