Our 2016 Angel Tree will be going up soon!
St. James will once again partner with area organizations this Christmas season to help provide presents for those in need. The St. James Angel Tree will be up in early November, giving time for you to select a recipient and make a thoughtful gift choice before the agency deadline to gather the presents: Sunday, November 27.
Due to displacements following our recent flood, Santa to a Senior will not be functioning this year.
Salvation Army Gifts for Children
We will again coordinate gifts for children in need through the local Salvation Army. Please tear off the card with its tab from the ornament and sign out your angel on the roster sheet next to the tree. A description of your angel is provided to help you shop for your gift. The Salvation Army has asked that we do not wrap the gifts. You may send wrapping paper with the gifts. Attach the original card/ornament securely to the present, and place back under the tree before Sunday, November 27 for the Salvation Army.
If you have any questions, please email Mary Boutwell or phone 225-387-5141, extension 1229.
By Mary Boutwell, Director of Lay Ministries

St. James Artists Guild Fall Exhibition Opens November 6
The Interim Rector’s Forum, with the Very Rev. Joe Reynolds, gathers in the CSF Atrium on the third floor of the Ministries Center, with presentation on belief, practice, and theology of the wider church, and conversation within St. James. More online.

For Adults on Sunday Mornings
Opportunities to help others in our food ministries could help enforce the generous, incarnational meaning of Christmas to you and yours. And, these are gifts you don’t have to dust!
WeCare lunch sacks, distributed from our Ministries Center on Mondays-Fridays, cost just about $2 each when items are purchased in bulk. Perhaps you would like to contribute toward one bag for a week in honor of a friend or co-worker?
The St. James Food Pantry distributes vouchers toward Thanksgiving and Christmas turkeys to the screened, qualified recipients we see at our twice-monthly distribution days. Would you and your family like to contribute toward a holiday turkey for another family who may not be as fortunate as you, this year?
Our Christmas Feast at St. James, for our neighbors living on the streets and/or in area homeless shelters, will be Sunday, December 11, right after the 10:30 a.m. service.
Look for details on donations for gift bags, soon, as well as the date for assembly of the bags — good fun and good work with fellow parishioners! Be a part of the 80+ volunteers who will assist on Sunday, December 13.
Mark your check with your choice (and include memorial info, if desired), or GO ONLINE HERE to contribute electronically!

Vestry NotesBy Jane Christensen, Clerk
A Note From Fr. Joe
At the Vestry meeting on Monday, October 10, 2016, Andy McCall opened with a reminder announcement that, as part of the Good News 2020 program, CPEX will give the final presentation on their master plan design on October 18 in Bishops Hall. Dinner and childcare will be provided. A poster-sized notice was included in the Vestry packet so members could help spread the word. Andy also asked for volunteers to assist with various activities related to the dinner and meeting.
Senior Warden Gerry Sulzer gave a stewardship update and is encouraged by increases in pledges received. Fr. Howe reported that approximately 60 people have volunteered to do individual calling in November.
Charlie Frey reported that Vestry nominations are now officially open. Individual forms for each nomination should be used. Nominations will close the end of October.
Manette Sammons gave the Day School report, advising the school is doing well. The after-school program is a huge success with all but one class filled. A study hall has been added for any student who wants to take care of homework before going home, and Head of School, Lauren Ray, is monitoring study hall. A commercial video is in the works to be used for promoting the school as well as a “Look Book,” already in production. Corporate sponsors for Carnival are down from last year, and parishioners are being asked to donate to Parish Partners to help support Carnival.
Gerry advised that the requested lowering of the 2016 and 2017 Diocesan Assessments has been granted. He shared that a parishioner had asked why St. James no longer advertises in the newspaper. At a cost of $2000 per year, it is not felt to provide results.
Mike Wampold has asked to rent 10-15 parking spaces in the teacher’s lot from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. as valet parking for the new Watermark Hotel. The Vestry approved this proposal, noting that some arrangement for weddings and other nighttime church events will be worked out.
Fr. Reynolds reminded the Vestry that the Diocesan Convention will be held at St. Martin’s School in Metairie on November 4 and 5. He also advised that flood assistance is still available, if needed by flood victims.
The parish by-laws designate the third Sunday of January as the annual meeting, and to change that date, a resolution by the vestry is needed. Because of the marathon being held that Sunday, motion was made and approved that the 2017 meeting be held on January 22.
Fr. Reynolds proposed, which was then made motion and approved, that a retreat for returning and new Vestry members be held half day on Friday, February 3, and full day on Saturday, February 4, 2017.
When I was growing up the end of Thanksgiving Day marked the beginning of the Christmas season. Often we spent the day at my grandmother’s house in Atlanta. On the way home that evening, my father would turn on the car radio because for the
first time Christmas carols would be playing. I still remember the feeling of being in the dark car, lit by a glow from the dashboard, with the thrill of Christmas in the air. I remember at least one year when we went to Rich’s Department Store downtown to watch the lighting of the Christmas tree which stood on the sky walk which spanned Peachtree Street.
All that has changed, of course. Our culture seems to have a diminishing capacity for delayed gratification. As Meryl Streep’s character in Post Cards from the Edge says, “Delayed gratification takes too long.” We are addicted to instant communication even if the truth and deeper understanding are the casualties of the rush. We are quick to conclusions and slow to serious thinking. The Christmas season now begins with Hallowe’en, if we can wait that long.
I’m not complaining, not really. Nostalgia is a dangerous road to travel even if tempting. We can stay stuck in a past that may never have existed the way we remember it. It may be the memory that belongs to a six-year old boy — worth remembering but impossible to recreate. We can miss out on much of the wonder and joy of the world we actually live in.
On the other hand, we Episcopalians know about delayed gratification, at least liturgically. There is a bit of a journey left before the Christ child appears in Bethlehem. We are still a month or so away from Advent, which is itself a time of waiting and watching — waiting for something big to happen, waiting for the grace of God to move once more into the world.
Scott Peck, the author of The Road Less Travelled, says that the capacity for delayed gratification is a sign of maturity. Unlike the child who will always choose the piece of candy over the promise of two pieces later, we have the ability to wait and watch. We have the ability to prepare. We have the ability to make sacrifices for the good of tomorrow. We have an awareness of our responsibility to and for the generations that come after us.
At least, we should have. It is that practice of delayed gratification that deepens our capacity for joy.
