From the ancient monastic practice of ending the day in prayer and praise of God, this serene service features a small group of singers leading prayers and chants that may be joined as you desire. Its principal parts are a confession to clear the conscience, then a psalm, short lesson and hymn, all about quiet sleep and confidence in God’s protection.

All are welcome to come experience one of the softly beautiful Anglican gems of worship. Come clothed in comfort, make your position comfortable, or move about and study the church or windows in silence, and hear the beautiful sounds at the close of the day with prayer and praise. The next date for Compline is Sunday, April 10.

The spring term ends this month, after three exciting sessions:

• April 6, 6:00 p.m.• April 13, 6:00 p.m.• April 27, 6:00 p.m. - last of season

Group Meetings

joan of arcAza Walker hosts the April 6 gathering at noon, and Brandon Stephens presents the lesson on the parable of “The Parable of the Talents” from Matthew 25:14-30.

Contact Nina Broyles at [email protected] for more information about the Joan of Arc Study Group!

The April book selection is Me Before You by Jojo Moyes, and we’ll be meeting on Monday, April 18 at 6:00 p.m., at La Madeleine’s on Jefferson at Old Hammond Highway. R.s.v.p. to Monica Murphy, and don’t forget to bring a sweater! (This is the same book originally scheduled for March, but delayed due to the Town Hall meeting on March 21.)

and more for

Millennials at st. JamesMoT is not your ordinary Bible study. It is a gathering of young adults (20s-30s) to discuss interesting theological and spiritual topics such as the Gnostic Gospels, The Apocrypha, theology in contemporary or “pop” literature, and more. Discussions kick off at 7:00 p.m. on the first and third Mondays at The Radio Bar (located along Government St. in the Westmoreland Shopping Center, 3079 Government Street).

Calling all millennials

Are you a millennial between the ages of 25-35, or do you know one who’s looking to get involved at St. James? Your fellow Millennials are here and you aren’t alone!

Alyce Howe and Marvin McLennon are spearheading St. James’ efforts to identify and meet the needs of the parish’s millennials.

We want to know who you are so we can keep you in the loop and those people who would like to be involved in our efforts. If you’re interested and want to be included, please email Alyce or Marvin!

The church office and ECW are joining forces to create an updated, paper-printed, pictorial “selfie” directory!

We will have selfie sticks available starting on Easter Sunday, so you can snap a pic while wearing your Sunday best! If you don’t have a smart phone to take a selfie, we are happy to snap a picture for you.

If you won’t or can’t be with us on Easter Sunday, or already have a favorite family “selfie”, please send that along your current contact information no later than Wednesday, June 16. Please identify those in the photo, left to right.

All pictures should be emailed to:

[email protected] directories will be distributed at the Ministries Fair on Sunday, August 21.

Help us make the best Church Directory ever!

More about the Treble Choir HymnathonRSCM America, founded in England more than 80 years ago, is committed to educating church musicians in the traditions of the church and to help them grow musically and spiritually.

The Houston course tuition is $587.50 per chorister, including their music, but not including travel. So that as many choristers can attend as are willing to make the commitment, the Treble Choir will be hosting a Hymnathon on Sunday, April 17 from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m.

Get out your hymnal (or, find all the hymns in the Hymnal 1982, here), pick your favorites, and you can “buy” a hymn -- or two, or three -- to be sung during the Hymnathon. Any hymn in the 1982 hymnal may be selected. A donation of $50 per hymn (group donations welcome) is suggested. If you’d like to dedicate your hymn, we’ll announce the dedication in the program leaflet and at the Hymnathon, too!

Look for Hymnathon Donation envelopes in the foyers, narthex of the church, and parlor; or, look for a Treble Choir member with donation envelopes; or, make your donation online — here (stjamesbr.org/hymnathon), where you can read more about how to help our choristers study and enjoy an evening of your favorite hymns!

Vestry Notes

At the March 14 meeting of the Ves-try, they were advised the 2016 budget is not complete. A meeting is sched-uled on Thursday, March 17 to continue work. Vestry members were challenged by Barbin Graham to increase their own pledges help offset lower 2016 pledges re-ceived. Gerry Sulzer noted that the cur-rent pledge amount results in a deficit of approximately $130,000 if spending is kept at the 2015 level, and hiring a Chris-tian Education Director would increase that deficit. No consensus was reached to form another committee to contact parishioners who have not pledged, but the matter will be discussed at the Vestry Retreat in mid-April.

Andy McCall submitted the name of Dan West as a returning member of the Mis-sion and Vision Steering Committee.

Allen Paterson gave a presentation about the Pastoral Care Committee’s Proposal for Lay Participation in Pastoral Care, and highlighted several points of the pro-posal:

• The need for a lay pastoral care min-istry in addition to Stephen Ministry

• A core group of volunteers should be solicited.

• Means of identifying pastoral care needs will be communicated to the congregation.

• The Lay Pastoral Care Ministry will share information with other minis-tries.

Following his presentation, it was moved and seconded that the Pastoral Care Min-istry be approved and the motion carried.

Andy McCall reviewed the CPEX materi-als distributed to the vestry, including a Project Scope report, Talking Points, and Key Dates report. He asked that parish-ioners be encouraged to fill out the on-line survey and reminded the vestry of the dates for the “open studio/charette” in late March.

Josh Pesses reported that Day School enrollment is up to 295 for the 2016-17 school year and there is a waiting list for PreK-3. Atkinson Hall construction will

be finalized during the summer break. Cost will be approximately $100,000, but is hoped to be funded by a Historic Build-ings credit.

The Vestry Retreat would be held April 15-16 at Hilltop Arboretum, starting early Friday afternoon and, continue on Saturday for much of the day. Gerry Sul-zer has asked Canon John Kellogg to fa-cilitate the Friday afternoon meeting. An agenda will be developed for the retreat.

Gerry Sulzer is in the process of put-ting together an Interim Rector Search Committee, consisting of the Executive Committee and two additional vestry members. (Catherine Harrell has already agreed to serve on the committee, and the final member will be named shortly.) A discussion followed concerning the type of interim rector needed, the need for a consultant to help heal division in the church, the type of permanent rector and how long it might take to have a new rec-tor in place.

2016 Celtic Pilgrimage

Contemplating Celtic Spirituality: GLENDALOUGH AND THE ARAN ISLANDSJuly 3-15, 2016Leaders: Marsha Wade and Marcus Losack

We invite you to come with us on a special Pilgrimage to Celtic and Christian sites in Ireland. We will travel together as prayerful and caring pilgrims, exploring the treasures of the Celtic Tradition and deepening our own sense of spirituality, wisdom and community.

Locations on the itinerary include Hill of Slane (the ancient site where St Patrick lit a Paschal Fire as a symbol of his Mission to bring the light of Christianity to Ireland; and, the ancient and sacred monastic site at Glendalough founded by St Kevin in the sixth century; St Brigid’s Cathedral in Kildare, site of St Brigid’s fifth century Irish monastery; Ring of Kerry and Molls Gap; Inis mor, largest of the Aran Island; Dun Aengus (8th century BC Hill Fort) and the nearby site where there are ruins of seven ancient churches; and, more, with experienced pilgrimage leader Marcus Losack.

Marcus is an inspiring teacher who has published four books on the Origins of St. Patrick. He has been on the associate staff of the Haden Institute for many years, specializing in Celtic Spirituality. He is now the Director of The Celtic Pilgrimage Company.

Read more, or download a pilgrimage registration form, here.

Jr. High Rally at the SECC, April 15-17Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. --Matthew 28:19

What is Jr. High Youth Rally? Jr. High Youth Rally is a retreat weekend

for youth in grades 6-8. Rally is designed by the youth and adults on the Diocesan Youth Leadership Committee and staffed by youth and adults from that committee. Rally is designed to be a fun, relaxing retreat weekend at the Solomon Episcopal Conference Center that combines presentations by youth, small group discussion, and worship with games, activities, music, and fellowship. Rally is designed to be welcoming to everyone who attends and the goal of the weekend is to make sure that everyone is included fully in the community.

Who can attend Rally? Jr. High Rally is open to all youth in grades 6-8 from the Diocese of Louisiana, and friends of any religious background. While the topics presented and discussed will have a Christian focus, we welcome all young people who have a willingness to participate fully in the weekend regardless of their religious affiliation. You need not be an Episcopalian to attend, however you must be committed to engage in theological reflection from a Christian perspective.
