SUMMER TERM 2019

T he summer term is always an unusual one; a term in which we see

students take their GCSE and A Level exams, where we say goodbye to

some students and some staff, and where we begin to look forward to the

new academic year. However, as you can see from this newsletter, the activities and

opportunities available to our students do not reduce in number or quality

throughout this term. Indeed, as I am writing this we are at the start of our annual

Activities Week, with students experiencing a wide range of educational activities,

including the majority of Year 8 visiting either France, Germany or Spain to assist

them in their language studies.

The students in Years 11 and 13 were brilliant throughout the exam season and

coped extremely well, approaching their exams with focus and drive. Public

congratulations also need to be given to all the parents and carers who went

through the exam season with their children, and to the staff who have worked

tirelessly to prepare our young people for this crucial period in their education.

The team in the Examinations Office also need a special mention as the

organisation required to make sure that the exams are administered effectively and

efficiently is mind boggling!

One of the post exam season highlights for the students was the opportunity to

attend their year group’s Prom, photographs of which can be seen in this

newsletter. And, as we said goodbye to Year 11 and Year 13, we had the

opportunity to welcome the new Year 7 students, in anticipation of them joining

our community in September. We are very much looking forward to working with

a new cohort of fantastic young people, and getting to know them and their

families as we journey through secondary education together.

Perhaps one of the most pleasurable parts of the summer term is also the selection

of students for the various leadership roles we have in the school. Competition for

these roles is fierce, and every student who applied for a role should feel very

proud of the fact that they were willing to put themselves forward and apply.

Again, I am looking forward to working with our new student leaders over the

course of the next academic year.

Some staff are leaving us at the end of this term, as outlined in this

newsletter, and we thank them for all they have done to make the school

as successful as it is. We also have some new staff joining us in

September. They have been into school for an Induction Day and they are

all very excited to be a part of the Coopers Coborn family.

So, the only thing left for me to do is to say a final thank you to you all

for your support of, and interest in, the school. It is a wonderful place to

be and it is made so fantastic due to the amazing people working in, and

connected to, the school. I hope that you all have a restful summer and I

look forward to seeing many of you again in September.

YEAR 7 FOUNDERS’ DAY

O n Thursday, 20 June all students in Year 7 went to St Dunstan’s and All Saints Church in Stepney to celebrate the foundation of the school by its two founders, Nicholas Gibson and Prisca Coborn. Nicholas Gibson is

buried at St Dunstan’s. This is an important date in our school calendar and one of the highlights for Year 7. Students were joined for the service by Chair of Governors (Mr John Fahy), Chair of Foundation Governors (Dr Ian Frood), Master of The Worshipful Company of Coopers (Mr Perry Bousfield), the Company Clerk (Cdr Stephen White RN (rtd)), Foundation & School Governors, Senior Staff and the Year 7 Form Tutors. Many thanks to our organist, Mr Bob Norris, and the school choir who sang ‘I Sing Because I’m Happy’ and ‘This Day’ under the musical direction of our Head of Music, Miss Lexi Williams.

We were most grateful to The Revd Canon Graham Foulis Brown (Honorary Chaplain Emeritus of The Worshipful Company of Coopers) who stepped in at the last minute to lead the service. Our new 2019-20 School Captains Jessica Smith & Stephen McLoughlin (pictured) laid a floral tribute at the Nicholas Gibson Memorial while the members of the congregation sang the hymn ‘Shine Jesus Shine’. As always, we are very grateful to The Revd Trevor Critchlow for his hospitality, and also to The Revd Dave Tomlinson who read the Sermon.

. German Exchange

to Rheinbach 18-25 June 2019

A t 5.30am on Tuesday 18 June fifteen very nervous, excited and brave Year 10 students started their return journey to Rheinbach (near Bonn and Köln) to spend one week living with their German exchange partners and their

families.

We were met with hugs at the school bus stop. The week was filled with shopping trips to Bonn and Cologne, visits to the beautiful cathedrals in Cologne and Aachen, experience of German lessons, sampling lots of German food, practising of German in ‘real life situations’ and swimming in the impressive pool in Rheinbach (on one day it reached 36°).

At the weekend the German families organised extra visits, but most students also made it to the theme park, Phantasialand. When we left on Tuesday afternoon there were hugs, but also plans to meet up again in the summer holidays, as the friends said goodbye. “The exchange was amazing! I have met many new friends, who I would love to keep in contact with. We got to go to Phantasialand (the massive theme park), Bonn, Cologne, a chocolate museum and on lots of other fun trips. I am going to miss it loads!”.

T he Coopers’ Company and Coborn School are the Sir Winston Churchill Public Speaking Competition Champions! We took a Year 10 and a Year 12 team to Churchill’s residence, Chartwell, on Friday 28 June for the

competition. This was a new venture for the debating team. Our Year 10 team enjoyed the workshop held earlier this year and put many hours into the preparation of their speakers. They performed well and were beaten by a very experienced grammar school team.

I n June Year 10 GCSE History students were able to enjoy a sunny afternoon in East London whilst learning about

a dark chapter in the history of Whitechapel. The five classes were taken around the sites of the Jack the Ripper murders by professional guides. They heard about living conditions, policing techniques, the role of the press and the murders themselves which took place in 1888. These are all issues which are covered in the GCSE historic environment module about Whitechapel. It was a very successful afternoon and the students were very impressed by the detailed knowledge of their guides. at the National Theatre. ‘Top Girls’ is an English Literature A-Level set text, and rarely performed at notable theatres in the UK (the last major production was in 2012) so this was a special opportunity for students to further engage with the content and extend their understanding and appreciation of this modern drama. It was a really enjoyable and worthwhile evening.

I n the first week of the Easter holidays 36 Year 11 GCSE History students went to Berlin on a four-day trip to study key historic sites in the city. As part of the trip we visited the Olympic Stadium, centre of the 1936 Berlin Olympics, did a

walking tour of the city, including the Reichstag Building and the Brandenburg Gate, had a guided tour of a prison used by the Stasi, the communist secret police in East Germany, up until 1990, and also were shown around the Berlin Wall memorial to help understand the significance of that structure in the Cold War and learn about the people who died trying to cross the border between east and west. We also travelled outside the city to see Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp which was established by the Nazis in 1936 and the Cecilienhof Palalce in Potsdam, where the leaders of the United States, the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union met in 1945 to discuss the future of Europe after the war. There was also time in the evenings for a session of ten-pin bowling, some late night shopping and a visit to the viewing platform of the 1,207ft Berlin TV Tower. The trip was organised to help students in their understanding of the GCSE modules covering the Weimar and Nazi Germany module and the Cold War module. It was a great success aided by good weather, excellent guides and the valuable assistance of Miss Edmeades, M r W o o d w a r d , Miss Williams and Miss Foster.

Year 9: We have had 71 students enrol this term. They are busy setting up their programs and deciding what they will be doing for their Volunteering, Physical and Skill sections. They will be undertaking their Bronze Expedition Training at the end of September. Year 10: We had 83 participants start in May 2018 and we are really pleased that 78% of them have completed all four sections and achieved their Bronze award!! For outstanding volunteering Oliver Leader & Mason Holley were also deemed worthy of a Jack Petchey award. Year 12: We have 9 participants who have been working on their five sections since the New Year. They are hoping to complete their Residential section this summer and are looking forward to starting their Expedition Training in the South Lake District in the October half term. Year 13: 9 participants are completing their assessed Expedition in the North Lake District on 8-12 July. We expect our participants to have a challenging but fabulous time in the great outdoors and for them to return home with lifelong friendships made, characters developed and fascinating stories to be told. 3 of them should be very close to finishing their award. Year 14+: We are really pleased and proud that more students have completed their Gold award since leaving Coopers Coborn. George Monckton completed in November 2018 and Emma Edgell-Reeves and Anna Clements collect their certificates from Buckingham Palace this summer. Lucy Eost and George Deverill have recently passed and are applying for the next Royal Award Ceremony. We are very grateful to a dedicated staff team of volunteers: Mr Bain, Mr O’Brien, Miss Gibson, Mrs Lay, Miss Wood and Mr Claude for supporting and encouraging the students.

T he summer term is always an exciting time in the Art Department, as our Year 11 and 13 art students get to showcase all their hard work from the last two years.

Of course there is some pressure that comes with that, but it is always a lovely occasion when we have the GCSE and A Level Exhibitions. This summer has been no exception. The amount of students, staff, family members and friends of both Year 11 and 13 art students who attended the Exhibitions had so many positive things to say. The external moderators who check our marks also commented on and were impressed by the range of personal and varied outcomes by our students. There is a really healthy number of Year 11 students who are keen to take up art at A Level, so we are hoping for more great work to come! Below is a taster of what was produced by our amazing students. Enjoy!

. Charity Update

F irst of all we would like to send a massive thank you to all our parents and students for helping to raise in excess of £16,000 this academic year. We really appreciate all your efforts.

With exam season upon us, this term is generally a little quieter so below is an update of some of the things we have been involved with this term. During the week 1st-5th July, we celebrated our first Diversity Week focusing on the LGBTQ+ community. Students received an assembly led by Miss Smith who was joined in the KS3 and Year 12 assemblies by Year 13 student Matthew Hale. Matthew delivered a poignant and personal account of his experiences in school relating to the LGBTQ+ community. During this week we supported a charity called Just Like Us (www.justlikeus.org). They are an LGBTQ+ charity for young people that aims to empower students from classroom to career. Last year, Just Like Us launched Diversity Week with 600,000 students taking part, and this year CCCS decided to get involved. We were encouraging young people to be allies and role models who champion LGBTQ+ equality within the school, as well as celebrating diversity and demonstrating acceptance and appreciation for all staff, students, their friends and families in and around the CCCS community. The school was proud to raise a rainbow flag to welcome all staff, students and visitors to the school and lots of form rooms decorated their doors to offer a symbol of acceptance and welcome to everyone who teaches, learns and visits our school. Friday 5th July resulted in a non-uniform day with the slogan: Loud and Proud. A range of staff and students embraced the bright and bold dress code with Maddie Parker, Kerry Pittaway, Ben Wales, Rhys Leach and Leah Taylor all winning t-shirts for their clothing efforts on the day. School Diversity Week is a national initiative with over half a million students and teachers involved in promoting safe and accepting schools. Love as Brethren has reached new limits and the school is proud to continue this important work throughout the school year. Below are some photographs from the week, more can be found at https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1wqYWRQ4QF_8jdY4FS0K2y8dFLX41t8Jn?usp=sharing

Our non uniform day also supported AMMF. AMMF was founded in 2002 and is today the only charity that supports cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer). Over recent years there has been an enormous increase in the disease and the charity supports specialised research teams in their work towards better diagnostic techniques andtreatments and, ultimately, a cure. AMMF works closely throughout the UK with patients and their carers, clinicians, healthcare professionals, researchers, etc as well as collaboratinginternationally.

A fter working hard all year, Year 9 students have just taken their ICT Functional Skills exam. We should receive their results by the time they return to school from the summer holiday and those that pass will be able

to collect their certificate from the Exams Office. Year 9 are now working on IDEA, digital awards (bronze, silver and gold) endorsed by the Duke of York, during lessons. Congratulations to Hani Singha who completed her bronze award in record time and has sent off for her certificate. Several other students are hot on her heels. Once begun, this award can be worked on independently by students at home. On Thursday 11 July eleven Year 8 students are going to the law firm Field Fisher to find out more about careers in technology. We are currently assembling a team of twelve Year 8 girls to work on a project with Ford Motor Company. They will spend around ten hours developing an idea for an App, before presenting it at the Ford IT Girls Day event in November.

MESSAGES FROM THE HEADTEACHER

Year 9 Geography Trip to Margam Park

O n Tuesday 25 June, 60 Year 9 students embarked on our annual geography residential trip which this year was to the wonderful Margam Park in South Wales. Myself, Miss Gibson, Mr Ciobanu, Mr Ryan, Miss Edmeades and

Mr Schultz had the absolute pleasure of watching students grapple with various fieldwork skills such as the use of questionnaires and taking river measurements. On the first day, students worked on understanding the importance and usefulness of field sketches in geographical investigations inside the classroom. Through this, they then made their way to the beautiful v-shaped valleys of Margam Park and conducted field sketches that encompassed important GCSE skills around annotating and labelling field sketches that show the human and physical processes of a landscape. On the second day, our geographers travelled to Cardiff Bay and spent the day finding out about the history of Cardiff Bay and how it has gone through recent urban regeneration. They capped off the day by collecting data through questionnaires to members of the public about their thoughts and perceptions of urban regeneration around this region. In the afternoon, students set their small mammal traps around Margam Park to see what mammal they would find the next morning. The following day students were welcomed by various types of mammals in their traps, which they then released back out into the wild. On the final day, students had their fitness and stamina tested through a 7.5km trek along a river in Margam Park. Through this trek, students calculated various river measurements downstream such as river velocity, width, depty and bedload size. This then allowed students to understand how rivers change as it goes downstream. Through the exposure of such as fieldwork skills and geographical knowledge, students have had a lovely insight into some of the key skills and knowledges required for GCSE Geography topics such as distinctive landscapes and also for their physical geography fieldwork topic of GCSE Geography paper 1. In the evenings, students had a lovely time admiring the beauty of Margam Park from their accommodation and some students even decided to take part in the evening football matches. This led to fierce matches between Mr Abadin and Mr Schultz respective teams. Thanks to Mr Ryan for the amazing officiating of these very intense games. We look forward to many more geographical adventures over the coming years with this fantastic bunch and hope they are ready for more fieldwork in Year 10, Year 11 and even beyond!

MESSAGES FROM THE HEADTEACHER

REFUGEE WEEK POEM By Jasmine Elworthy

Beep beep black sheep Submit to this now, fodder

To the normalcy – 2 billion trips a year And this just one

The noise will grow on you The stuffiness too-

The air thick with breath and your mouth filled with chip-shop fumes Stuffed with food too distant to chew

The rocking; you hold on to The yellow bar and swing

Pegged up, helpless hanging From the nooses they strung up in town

Your father’s head upside down And the little girls are the crowds

And they’re staring and staring at you

They chatter, their language filthy Each syllable short as the space

Between a trigger-pull and impact Between impact and blood on the floor

They never called it a way; A ‘crisis’ the word is obscene

To you, and each I Is the drawl of the machine-gun

Your ESOL papers in your cheap black bag Like a rag to stuff your throat with

And choke out the refugee As the bus halts I hear your heart scream

. I see him – a hurdle in flesh

As he enters with eyes gleaming red With the little girl he’s calling back Who trips on your burqa in black I can feel the film unwinding and You can say nothing, do nothing

Mousetrap-tongue Caught on razor wire

Your lungs your ID papers, Folded up

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’RE DOING The inflection a mother’s scream

As she tells the children to ‘get back inside! They wouldn’t come on Ramadan,

They wouldn’t dare’ WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’RE DOING

Every vowel the blast of a shell As it hits you, you burn but still do not move

My heart hammering him off to hell WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’RE – ‘oh give it a rest will ya?’

My own voice foreign, estranged I tremble as he squirms away

His hand on his daughter’s wrist Like a shackle, as if there’s a risk

Of you going off A bomb

I can see you’ll get used to this As the doors shut again with a hiss

As you sit at the back and avoid every eye As I join you in silence, a wrench in my eye Like tear-gas has hit I do nothing but cry

And I can’t tell you why This sick world will never see

That you, who crossed the sea Who has done nothing but suffer Deserves this land more than me.

A fter weeks of work at lunchtime and after school, the day finally dawned on Saturday 6 July for our two teams of Year 10 students. They arrived at Leonardo in Basildon for a day of competitions with the remote controlled

robotic chariots they had built. The three competitions were Sumo, Obstacle Course and 2-a-side football. Despite technical difficulties faced throughout the day, both teams put on a strong showing for the Coopers Coborn debut at the competition. ‘Out of this World’, built and raced by Emma Kennedy, William Talwar, Stephen Thompson and Rebecca Wright, made a good showing in the obstacle course, finishing 9th in qualifying to be denied one of the top 8 places to progress to the knockout stage. ‘Diamond’, built and raced by Annabel Casey-Sweeney, Jessica Lowrie and Bethan Wimpenny, managed to get into the semi-finals of both the Sumo and the 2-a-side football, but in both instances were knocked out by eventual winners. All the students had a great day, which would not have been possible without the support and hard work of Senior Science Technician, Mr Galvin. Now that Coopers Coborn has a taste for this particular competition, I am sure that next year we can build better chariots and get to the finals!

S ince joining the school as Head of English, Mr Ed O’Brien has worked tirelessly to make the department a centre of

excellence. He is determined that every English lesson is outstanding. Not only has he fostered an amazing team spirit amongst the staff, he has also nurtured and developed their individual talents, so that each teacher really is at the top of their game. Every student in the school reaps the benefits of this by having inspirational lessons delivered by passionate teachers. The proof of this can be seen in the GCSE results, where students gain fantastic results and make superb progress.

M rs Alison Lay has gone above and beyond her role as a Learning Support Assistant. Her calm and level

-headed approach has helped to build positive relationships with our students in the SEN department and especially in Year 11. Students actively seek her help and guidance with work or advice they may need. Mrs Lay is a real asset to the school and has had a positive impact on so many students.

A t an early stage in her career Miss Chloe Wood took over head of department responsibilities and did a

fantastic job. In a department with two on maternity leave, she has successfully mentored an NQT and a trainee whilst working hard to drive up attainment and progress at GCSE and A-Level. On top of this she has been a fantastic tutor to a Year 11 form, mentoring and supporting them extensively through revision and exam stress. Miss Wood is highly organised and is on course to becoming an outstanding middle leader.

M rs Angela Titley is a highly valued colleague who is extremely professional and efficient in her role.

She has significantly developed the Exams Department and its processes since joining the school in 2016. These upgrades have included a new system for processing the post results service, vastly improving the organisation, and delivery, of mock examinations and providing regular, lazer-sharp, analysis of data to key stakeholders. These measures have contributed to an increase in the results achieved by the school in recent years, including progress scores at both GCSE and A-Level, enabling more students to fulfil their career and further education ambitions.

M r Wayne Ferreira makes a significant impact to our school community in a myriad of different roles. On a day-to

-day basis he is a passionate and dedicated Head of Psychology and the department is one of the highest performing within the school, as well as being one of the most popular destination subjects for undergraduate study due to the passion he instils. Mr Ferreira also leads our debating provision, giving his time freely at weekends to enter numerous national competitions against schools within the independent sector. Mr Ferreira has also strategically led our Sixth Form enrichment provision over the past eighteen months.

GCSE Physical Geography Fieldwork with Year 10

I n May, Year 10s had their first experience of GCSE geography fieldwork when we visited Walton-on-the-Naze. We had a whole day at the coast, and students used a range of methods to investigate whether erosion is the most

significant geomorphic process shaping the distinctive coastal landscape at Walton-on-the-Naze. Our methods included producing a range of field sketches in contrasting locations along the coastline. Followed up with a number of beach measurements using the coastal management strategies to our advantage. However, the sea was not always our friend, which for parts of the day made the beach inaccessible, and therefore taking our measurements become slightly more challenging. Finally, to compliment the observations and measurements we had taken throughout the day, we conducted some questionnaires to find out what local residents thought about the geomorphic processes and what were the challenges facing the local community in relation to the coastline. Once back at school we used all the results we had collected, analysed them and drew conclusions to answer our investigation question. We were again very fortunate to have some great fieldwork weather (no rain), although it was rather windy. The Year 10s have shown what fantastic geographers they have become over their past four years at Coopers Coborn applying the knowledge they have gained to ask and answer great geographical questions. We are now planning for next year and our new Year 10s.

Year 12 Trip to Pembrokeshire Eleanor Apps & Nathan Brabham-Neil—Geography Captains

T he Year 12 geographers recently went on a week’s trip to Pembrokeshire as part of our A Level Course. We had to plan and carry out an investigation of our

choice to look at how physical geography (coastline) or human geography (tourism) has impacted the local town of Tenby. We arrived after a short 6 hour coach journey to FSC Orielton (our home for the week) and got straight to it! We started Investigating the water and carbon cycle and different methods on how to collect data to give us the option to investigate this part of physical geography. On the second day we were focusing on the physical aspect of geography by evaluating shoreline management plans and completing cliff profiles. This involved a few hours

in the classroom before heading to the beach where we were greeted with heavy rain and a strong wind. Not letting this dampen our moods we used clinometers and ranging poles to assess if a particular cliff has been impacted by erosion and conclude if there will be any impact to the local residents. The skills we learnt from this could be applied to our own investigation. On the third day we travelled to a slightly sunnier Saundersfoot and Tenby to focus on the human aspects of geography. We completed clone town surveys which assess the impact of globalisation on an area, environmental quality assessment and learnt how to log the longitude and latitude of our location.

. Again, the skills that we learnt could be applied to our own investigation. This evening was spent making a question for our investigation focus with 3 sub questions to focus on. We then had to think of suitable methods on what we were going to be investigating, to say this brought stress to some is fair to say but we all made it in time for Love Island that evening! On our final day we went to Tenby where the weather had finally improved and collected data for our chosen investigation using the skills that we have learnt. The human geographers spent their time in the town of Tenby going round completing various different data collections and speaking to residents and tourists, whilst the physical geographers spent the day on the beach

collecting their data. Of course there was the option to look at the carbon cycle where just three students (Mike, Lisa and Joe) stayed at FSC Orielton to collect their data. All the data we collected would be used to help answer our investigation title. Over the course of our trip, we all learnt valuable skills that we can use in geography, other subjects and further on in our post 18 plans. As well as making sure that we were caught up on Love Island every day, watching as a group with the other schools that were there. We learnt how to create an appropriate question, plan and conduct an investigation and analyse data using statistical testing. All of these skills will help us in our A Levels and our future jobs. Once again we would like to say a massive thank you to all the teachers who took us and organised this great opportunity and we hope the next set of geographers will find this trip as valuable and interesting as we did!
