MESSAGES FROM THE HEADTEACHER: JULY 2018
E arlier this term, we were delighted to receive a new school minibus, thanks to the amazing fundraising of our PFA. The school is most fortunate to have such a great team of fundraising parents and friends.
This is my final newsletter as Headteacher. I have had a fantastic time working here and am immensely proud that my name will go on the Headteachers’ Board in the Theatre – the first entry being Roger Henderson in 1555! The pages of this newsletter chronicle events which provide testament as to why this school has been such a very special place to lead and in which to work. I am not going to thank individuals or groups because I am almost certain to make omissions. Just a massive thanks to team CCCS. I have been touched by all the letters and notes wishing me well as I plan the next stage of my career. I wish the school all the very best for the future. Ms Hay did an excellent job as Acting Headteacher during my five month absence and will continue to do so from September. Dr David Parry

MESSAGES FROM THE HEADTEACHER
D ear Parents and Carers
I am writing to advise you of certain decisions following a meeting of the full Governing Board on Monday, 9 July. You are all aware now of the resignation of Dr Parry who will be leaving at the end of term. Many of you may be wondering what happens next and I can confirm that it is “business as usual”. Ms Hay has been Acting Head since January and this will continue to be the case whilst we undertake a search for a new Headteacher. This can be a lengthy process and we will commence the search with an advertising campaign in the Autumn term. The intention will be to have a new Headteacher in post with effect from 1 September 2019. Ms Hay will remain as Acting Head throughout this whole period. We must all pay tribute to Dr Parry for the dedicated service he has provided to the school. He was appointed Deputy Head in 2005 and Headteacher in April 2013. Throughout his tenure, Dr Parry has contributed greatly to the continuing success of the school. We owe him an enormous debt of gratitude and I am sure you will all wish to join with me in thanking him for his commitment and service and wish him well in his future endeavours. Late last year, you will recall that faced with continuing cuts to our funding and the need to set an in-year budget deficit, we very reluctantly agreed a decision to remove Music, Drama and Design Technology from our A Level curriculum. This certainly attracted a lot of interest on social media and elsewhere at the time! At the time of taking that decision, we committed to keep it under regular review. I am now very pleased to announce that all three subjects will be reinstated and offered as part of our A Level curriculum from September 2019. Having set a deficit budget for the current year, indications at the time pointed to that situation continuing for at least one more year. However, following a very rigorous budget and wider operational review, we will be setting a balanced budget for this next year and hope that this will continue to be the case for the foreseeable future. This has allowed us to revisit our original decision and reinstate those subjects. We greatly value those subjects and recognise their importance and the impact they have on the whole school and the student experience in general.

MESSAGES FROM THE HEADTEACHER
In recent years, the school has been hit hard by government funding cuts, and whilst we have made savings through ongoing operational reviews and efficiencies, we have also managed to maintain the high quality of education and extremely varied extra-curricular offering. The challenges we face in the coming years will be no less demanding, and there will always be difficult choices to be made, but we have an extremely dedicated, professional and talented staff to help us address them. The entire Governing Board offers its sincere thanks to the whole staff for their dedication to the school and the students. Finally, I would also like to offer my thanks to all of you and your sons and daughters for your ongoing support to the school. The summer holidays are almost upon us and I wish you all a most enjoyable time. With very best regards.
John Fahy Chair of Governors
GCSE Media Students—our annual trip to Disneyland Paris Media Conference will take place from 17th-20th February 2019. Deposits will be £100 and due by 21st September 2018 if you would like to go. Have a lovely summer!! Miss Orgar Head of Media

MESSAGES FROM THE HEADTEACHER
O n Monday, 2nd July 2018 we were most honoured to be visited by the Lady Mayoress of London, Samantha Bowman, and Miss Fiona Adler, past
Sherriff of the City of London. They were welcomed with a trumpet fanfare by Year 10’s Alexander McDonach and greeted by our School Captains Alex Orton and Jacob Fortune. Members of The Court of The Coopers’ Company and our Senior Leadership Team then joined them in the Boardroom for ’A Brief History of the School’ given by Dr Ian Frood, the Chair of the Educational Foundation. Next on the Agenda was the Opening of the newly refurbished Archive Room, most aptly named ‘The Dorothy Gorsuch Archive Room’ as a tribute and a thank you to Dorothy for the very many years she has spent looking after all our many treasures. Unfortunately Dorothy was unable to attend but her husband Alan and daughter Karen were there to represent her.

Sports Captains Isabella Purdie and Harley Whittlestone then escorted our guests to the Gym for a fabulous gymnastics display, after which our STEM Captains Francesca Stranders and Michael Watkins led them on to a STEM Science lesson. Many thanks to Max Prior and Rebecca Brown (both Year 12 students) for taking all these photos. After the STEM Science lesson, Music Captains Luke Bacchus, Oscar Eastman, Matthew Hale and Teerna Mukherjee escorted guests for Music Recitals and lunch in the Music Theatre where Teerna sang “The Winner Takes It All” accompanied by Luke on the piano. During the buffet lunch the Lady Mayoress and Miss Adler spoke to some of our Duke of Edinburgh students about their experiences. Thank you to Dr Frood for organising this visit—we all had a marvellous day and were delighted to be able to entertain such distinguished guests. Following the visit, Dr Parry received thank you letters from our guests praising all students and everyone involved. The Lady Mayoress wrote: “You must be so proud of these, your pupils. Quite apart from demonstrating how very talented they are in all sorts of disciplines—music, sport, STEM—their ability to talk to us with enthusiasm, humour and perfectly pitched confidence was immensely engaging.” and Miss Adler said: “From the moment we arrived at the school, students were warm, confident, animated, respectful and enthusiastic—qualities that can’t be contrived and the atmosphere in the school was one of great positivity and passion.”.

W ell done to all Year 7 students who entered the recent UKMT Junior Maths Challenge. Special congratulations go to Eva Paget who scored the top marks in the school and earned a silver certificate.
Mr Dennehy
Sixth Form Leadership: Captaincy/Colours and Mentors
O ne of the key features of our post-16 provision is a strong culture of student leadership and recognising student success. As such, we have selected Sixth Form Captains, Sixth Form Colours and Sixth Form Mentors for the
new academic year 2018/19. Subject Captains are those students responsible for leading that academic
subject across the entire school; they act as the public face of the subject. Academic Colours are awarded to students either for outstanding attainment,
progress of effort. Mentors are awarded on the basis of those students who we feel would be
outstanding ambassadors in supporting other students in that subject, lower down the school.
Many congratulations to all those students who have received recognition.
Mr Rob Bell Deputy Head & Director of Sixth Form
J ummah (Friday prayers) is every Friday starting at 1.30pm in C19 (Mathematics Corridor). The Khutbah (Sermon) is delivered in English and prayers are led by Mr Ali. Ablution can be completed in the toilets in the

MESSAGES FROM THE HEADTEACHER
O n Friday 22nd July, the Coopers YTA travelled down to the London Transport Museum where we participated in various challenges from cycling to a treasure hunt.
At 10:00 a.m. we arrived at the museum where we were greeted warmly and sat down in the main auditorium before meeting all the other schools in attendance. The YTA organisers spoke to us about the plan of the day and immediately after we began our treasure hunt. Coopers split up into two teams - Deji, Bidemi, Aman, Macy and Jack. On the other team there was Mr Hanford, Sam, Frankie, Lily, Patrick, and Favour. We had to search certain parts of the museum to find key facts and write them down. Mr Hanford’s team ('The A Team') obviously came first and were rewarded with stationery and goodies! Straight after that we began the Rollapaluza, a static bike connected to a speedometer. We were up against the other schools in attendance that day. We beat them every time! Sam Ford was the quickest with the fastest time ever recorded, covering the 250 metres in a fantastic 12 seconds. Wow! That was very fun and interesting but we had to move on. Once again we were back in the theatre. However, this time we were giving our own presentation based on anti-social behaviour on buses. Oyster card entrees were viewed by YTA coordinators and they were all very impressed. We viewed a few other great presentations and then looked at designs by other schools and voted for our favourite one. Once we had voted we were free to leave so we decided to go to McDonalds before travelling home on the tube We all have a fantastic time and have really enjoyed our first year as members of the Coopers’ Youth Travel Ambassadors. We can’t wait for bigger and better things to come next academic year.

STEM Festival
O n Thursday, 5 July we held our second Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) Festival. The aim was to increase students’ knowledge and
understanding of the role STEM plays in our everyday lives through participation in innovative activities. We had a fun day of activities for all students. Year 7 were based in the Science Block completing a CREST Discovery award called ‘Squashed Tomato Challenge’ from Practical Action. Year 8 visited the local Big Bang Event at Newham College. Year 9 followed a carousel of activities in school with led by the London Ambulance Service, Duke of York Digi Award, Biomechanics by the University of Hertfordshire and Centre of the Cell with Queen Mary University. Year 10 went to Thorpe Park where they used their smart phones to run the STEM GPS App, answering questions, completing challenges and activities while they walked through the park. Year 12 were based in school on another carousel of activities led by the Metropolitan Police, Bloodhound, Understanding Animal Research, Lush, Magic Maths, Guinness World Record, Oxbridge Inspire, Birds of Prey and Network Rail. In addition to a day of fun activities for the students, we were also fortunate enough to host an evening presentation for the wider community (parents, family and friends) be given by the world renowned Royal Institution (Ri). The Ri, set up over 200 years ago, is an independent charity dedicated to connecting people with the world of science. It is famed for its Christmas Lectures—the UK’s flagship science series—which were started by Michael Faraday in 1825, and are now broadcast on national television every year.
Many thanks to our STEM Committee for organising all these exciting activities for our students.

Year 12 Geography Pembrokeshire NEA Trip Summary By Oisin O’Sullivan and Hannah Meredith
Geography Captains
O n the 11
th of July 2018, 45 Year 12 Geography students went on a 5-day
residential trip to Pembrokeshire in Wales to gather data for our NEA (Non Examined Assessment) section of our A level worth 20% of our Geography
A level. In particular we would be prioritising our NEA investigation on the coastal town of Tenby, located in the South West of Wales. We stayed in a Georgian mansion known as FSC Orielton (FSC: Field Studies Council) located 3 miles south of Pembrokeshire. Day 1: Started with a brief introduction into the Orielton Estate. This was followed by a refresher course on the Geo-Skills needed for the Carbon & Water Cycle of Physical Geography given by FSC tutors. These Geo-Skills learnt were then tested on sites at FSC Orielton by the students. We also had a “low carbon meal” on the first day as an example of one of FSC Orielton’s schemes to lower their carbon footprint. Day 2: Started with a refresher course on the Geo-Skills needed for the Coastal Landscape element of Physical Geography (taking into consideration key terms such as Equilibrium & Resilience). This was followed by an educational visit to Saundersfoot Bay to put the coastal Geo-Skills learnt to practice. Day 3: Began with a refresher course on the Geo-Skills needed for the Human element of Geography (including the roles of tourism, Identity). We then went to the town of Haverford West to put the Human Geo-Skills learnt to practice. In the evening sessions students started to plan out their NEA investigations and specify what area of Geography they were going to do an NEA investigation on. Students also compiled equipment lists to be used on data collection day (including surveys, clinometers and measuring tapes). Day 4: This was Data Collection Day where all the Geo-Skills learnt were put into use for collecting the data for our overall NEA investigations. Students divided into specific aspects of Geography (Carbon &Water Cycle, Coastal Landscapes or Human) for their investigations, each using individual methods learnt. The evening session was spent compiling data gathered and starting to write the NEA proposal form for our individual investigations.
19
MESSAGES FROM THE HEADTEACHER
Day 5: The morning session was spent finishing our NEA proposal forms. This was followed by our departure from FSC Orielton.
The Geo-Skills learnt over the week included map reading, data interpretation, using geographical equipment and deepening our understanding of wider concepts: such as global warming and place identity and the affect they have on systems on a smaller scale, such as in Tenby. The Pembrokeshire trip has provided many transferable skills that are both useful and applicable to all walks of life.
All Geography students we’ve spoken to have thoroughly enjoyed the Pembrokeshire trip for a number of reasons including the great teaching, surprisingly favourable weather and great company overall. Furthermore, we believe that the campfire on the last day, as well as the Pembrokeshire trip overall, has unified the Geography Department (students & teachers alike) embracing the Coopers’ “Love as Brethren” spirit. #GEOPASSION

MESSAGES FROM THE HEADTEACHER
O ver the past two weeks, some of our Year 9 students took part in a
STEM/Careers event with London City Airport. This was a three-phase
event, which started with our students visiting the Airport in late June
and being set a challenge to design 3 new units to be entered into the new,
expanded London City Airport terminal. The students then had 1 week to
prepare a presentation on their ideas and deliver this in school to a
representative of the Airport. Every single group put in maximum effort
however after a long deliberation, one group was put through to the final to
present to a team of people from the Airport, including the CEO. The final took
place against 4 other schools from across 3 London Boroughs in which we
came runner-up. The staff at the airport were very impressed with their
presentation skills and confidence and they have asked for a copy of their
presentation to pass onto their commercial director to debate about whether
our student’s designed units should be installed into the expanded terminal.
A massive well done to all who participated.

O n Thursday, 21 June all students in Year 7 went to St Dunstan’s and All Saints Church in Stepney to celebrate the foundation of the school by its two founders, Nicholas Gibson and Prisca Coborn. Nicholas Gibson is
buried in St Dunstan’s. This is an important date in our school calendar and one of the highlights for Year 7. This was Mr Bonnett’s last Founders’ Day Service as he will be moving on with the current Year 7 students as their Head of Year 8 from September. Mr James Woodward takes over as Head of Year 7 from September. Students were joined for the service by members of the Court of The Worshipful Company of Coopers, led by the Master
Mr Anthony Behrens, School Governors led by Chair of Governors Mr John Fahy, members of the School’s Senior Leadership Team led by Dr David Parry, and the Year 7 Form Tutors. Many thanks to our organist, Mr Bob Norris, and the school choir who sang ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’ and ‘Tallis Canon’ under the musical direction of our Head of Music, Miss Lexi Williams. During the service, The Revd Canon G Foulis Brown (Upper Warden of The Worshipful Company of Coopers), Alex Orton & Jacob Fortune (School Captains) laid flowers at the Nicholas Gibson Memorial while the mem-bers of the congregation sang the hymn ‘When A Knight Won His Spurs’. As always, we are very grateful to The Revd Trevor Critchlow for his hospitality, and also to The Revd Dave Tomlinson who read the Sermon.

W e are very pleased that we have had our first two students complete their DofE Gold: Jessica Ward and Ryan Pinkney, Jessica went to Buckingham Palace to collect her award. The day
proceeded by gathering in our groups of 50 where she met Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, and then their celebrity host did a speech. Jessica received her certificate from their celebrity, got a group picture, and then she was free to walk around the gardens. Jessica felt was a really lovely day and it was a great chance to celebrate her achievement. She would definitely encourage others to complete their Gold award as it was so nice to get dressed up and visit the Palace to receive her certificate and badge. Its an experience she definitely won't forget!

T he German Exchange to Rheinbach 19 June – 26 June 2018
At 4am on Tuesday 19th
June fourteen very nervous, excited and brave
year 10 pupils started their return journey to Rheinbach (near Bonn and Köln),
to spend one week living with their German exchange partners and their
families.
After our flight was cancelled we made the most of our day out in London, by
having a group picnic in Green Park and by going for a walk past Buckingham
Palace, through St James’ Park and past Downing Street. It was then time to
have a quick ice cream before heading back to Heathrow for our evening flight.
The German families met us late at night at the train station in Rheinbach with
hugs and warm welcomes.
31
MESSAGES FROM THE HEADTEACHER
The week was filled with shopping trips to Bonn and Cologne, and visits to
the beautiful cathedrals in Cologne and Aachen. Experiences of German
lessons, a tour of the Lindt chocolate museum in Cologne, sampling of lots
of German food, practising German in ‘real life situations,’ swimming in the
impressive indoor and outdoor pools in Rheinbach, and of course there was
the ‘obligatory’ weekend trip to Phantasialand. When we left a week later
there were hugs, but also tears and plans to meet up again in November, as
the friends said ‘Auf Wiedersehen.’
The whole group were an absolute pleasure to take away on a school trip
and I hope that they have made some good friends, both here and in
Germany.
