Sports Day

After so much dry weather it was shame that Sports Day was so wet. That said the pupils did themselves proud and were a

real credit to the school and their house. Many records were broken throughout the day and the winning house was Venn.

Particular noteworthy performances were from Tumi Aleshinloye and Millie Richardson.

Retirements /Leavers

This week we say good bye to a number of staff who have chosen to retire. Between them they have accumulated almost

100 years at HCS or the Grammar school. The Deputy Head teacher Steve Jolly and his wife Pauline Jolly who has taught

maths are retiring to Wales and we wish them every success. Robert Tuck has been Head of ICT at the school for 9 years

and he is retiring in the summer. Doreen Chapman has worked in the finance office for 21 years and Doreen is retiring aged

70! We wish her every success as she starts her well-earned retirement. Graham Keenan, one of our long-standing peripa-

tetic music teachers, will also be retiring and we wish him well. Charlotte Dodds who has spent the year working with the

PE Faculty is also leaving HCS to join Hill

House as a PE teacher. We look forward to

seeing her at fixtures!

ISA Athletics

On Monday 19th June 2017 a group of pupils travelled to the Alexander Stadium in Bir-mingham for the ISA National Athletics Cham-pionships. There are seven regions which have held their own area athletics meetings prior to this event. HCS pupils had already achieved a significant goal in the Northern region by their selection to this prestigious event in the ISA calendar.

ISA Athletics (continued)

Competing in this stadium, which holds so many high profile athletic events, is a great honour and everyone attending has worked hard to be there. Brendan Reilly was the guest sportsman. Brendan is a Double Olympic High Jumper having won

medals and broken records at all levels of competition from National to World Cup level. Brendan is also a qualified PE teacher and now uses his experiences to help schools in-spire and engage pupils and parents through his work with 'Squad in Touch'. Many congratulations to Harry Hudson for coming 1st and who narrowly missed out on an English Schools qualifying time in the 800m with 2.06.66s, Tumi Aleshinloye coming 2nd in the 200m, and Joel Edgar who was part of the winning Year 10 relay team. Best in Everyone Awards The United Learning Best in Everyone Awards Ceremony is being held this evening in

Stratford-upon-Avon. The philosophy behind the Awards is that it recognises the out-

standing achievements of pupils in United Learning’s schools and academies across the

country.

Hull Collegiate nominated a number of pupils and staff for awards and I am delighted to

report, amidst fierce competition, that Anna Kelsall (Year 13) was awarded the Social Sciences award and Jessica Dixon

(Year 9) was awarded the Key Stage 3 History award; very well done to both girls.

Medicines

There appears to be a number of pupils arriving at the school in the morning and going straight to the school nurse claim-

ing they do not have paracetamol/lozenges etc. at home. Could I please remind parents and pupils that the school nurse is

primarily here for emergencies and illness that occur during the school day and is not a dispensing chemist!

New car park barrier

In order to ensure the safety of our pupils in the front car park, during the summer we will be installing a barrier.

The front of the school building will be used primarily as a staff car park and parents are kindly asked to park in the school’s main car parks. Parents of nursery children are free to use the front from 7.30am until 8.00am.

At 8.15am promptly each day, the barrier will put in place and will not open again until the children are off the site at 4.15pm. Thank you for your understanding.

Last Day of Term

School will finish on Friday July 7 at 12 noon. As mentioned in last week’s newsletter we are hoping that the majority of

pupils will leave their shoes behind. Please do not arrive at the school early as the Prep school will be leaving before the

senior school and we are trying to alleviate congestion in the car park.

Finally I wish you and your family a restful and safe summer and that wherever your travels take you that you find time to

relax and enjoy the company of your children.

Toe to Toe initiative A reminder about Sal’s Shoes. Next Fri-day on the last day of term we are tak-ing part in the Toe to Toe initiative where children’s shoes are donated to a child in Africa via the wonderful work of Sal’s Shoes. ‘Roots of Rhythm Festival’

On 22 and 23 June we held our ‘Roots of Rhythm Festival’ linking with Hull City of Culture’s current theme of ‘roots and routes’. It got off to a deafening start with a massed samba band led by UL’s Head of Music and Performing Arts, Catherine Barker.

Over one hundred pupils from HCS and six other local schools marched around the school before taking part in various other cultural activities including learning to play in a Gamelan orchestra and jazz improvisation workshops with the group Steppin’ Out (part of the Live Music Now project). Some of our best musicians from Years 7-10 also took part in these musical workshops. There were also crea-tive sessions about business, philosophy and creative writing.

The following day we were joined again by many more pupils from the local com-munity. As well as more Gamelan playing we were joined by two other special guests. The poet Ash Dickinson performed several of his poems (including a new one about Hull) and cajoled all the pupils into writing their own haikus, quatrains and longer poems about ‘roots and routes’. Finally, we were very lucky to wel-come one of the outstanding folk musicians of her generation: Eliza Carthy. Eliza gave several stunning performances during the day to all the smaller groups and in the main school assembly, singing and accompanying herself with dazzling skill on the fiddle. Eliza also taught all the pupils to join in with a cup rhythm which is part of her new song about Hull commissioned for this year’s City of Culture events. JW

skills? Aged between 14 and 20? Workshops and classes include: Group Singing, Audition Tech-nique, Singing Technique, Movement & Choreography, Acting Through Song, Song & Dance, Acting Skills, Movement, Voice, Stage Combat, Co-operating in a Group. So...if you have an interest in performance, design, lighting, stage-management or simply want to develop your confidence and be part of the creation of a brand new theatre show, let us know. A level Results Day – Thursday August 17th GCSE Results Day – Thursday August 24th Results will be available in school from 08:00 – 10:00 on both days.

Exam Results Day

If your child is unable to collect their results, they can nomi-nate a representative to collect them on their behalf. Exam results are private to the candidate so the school must have authorisation from your child to release them to a repre-sentative. Alternatively, the results can be posted out to their home address. Any alternative arrangements must be con-firmed with the Exams Officer before the end of term.

Friends of Hull Collegiate School

The Friends of Hull Collegiate School thank you for your continued support.

We have raised a vast amount of money again this year, whilst hopefully having fun. This could not have happened without your hard work and commitment to the Friends.

We were happy to see the opening of the pavilion which we contributed £15,000 towards, as well as portable lights for drama, and music stands and drums for music. Artists and Authors came into school to talk to the pupils which was funded by the Friends. We have also supplied much needed outdoor and indoor play equipment, including table tennis tables, and much, much more.

We are a very small team and are finding it harder and harder to run theses events. Your support and the support of parents is paramount for us to continue.

We would be grateful for any comments you have on events we have run in the past, both positive and negative, and ways in which we could improve. We have the follow-ing events coming up:

Summer Fete (23 June 2018) Quiz night (Friday 2 March 2018)

Please bear in mind that if your expectations are bigger and better, whilst we don't disagree, this can only happen with more helpers. To put on an event takes a lot of organisa-tion, and we constantly struggle with help setting up and down our events, not to mention the actual running of the event. Many of us volunteer our time, on top of full time work.

We thank you for your help in building our school commu-nity and we are grateful for all you do especially for the amazing help we had from lots of you at our Summer Fete. I have heard nothing but positive compliments so thank you for the part you played in making it a huge success.

Breakfast Meeting

Thank you to Emily Heaton who hosted this week’s breakfast meeting for pupils in Years 10, 11 and 12. Emily was a pupil at Hull Collegiate school last year and is now a first year medical student at HYMS. She talked about the application process, personal statements, interviews and described her experience so far studying medicine. It gave pupils an opportunity to gain insight into life after school and who would like to follow the same path as Emily.

Summer Fete

On Saturday 24 June we held this year's Friends of Hull Colle-giate School Summer Fete with around 1000 people attending throughout the day. The event was organised by FoHCS who worked extremely hard over the past few months to create another fabulous day to suit all ages. New for this year was the Big Top, Little Top Circus Show where families were enter-tained by circus performers. The final of Hull Collegiate’s Got Talent was also held here with a Year 7 pupil winning 1st prize along with Bently the Great Dane winning 1st prize in the dog show, Paws in the Park. The weather was once again glorious all day and the school grounds were filled with people enjoy-ing themselves and relaxing with children playing on the bouncy castles, petting the live animals, slip n slide, face painting welly wanging, penalty shoot-out, classic cars, total wipeout and so much more...

'Doing it for Dylan' - water safety campaign by his Mother Rebecca Ramsay

On Wednesday the Senior School assembly was delivered by Rebecca Ramsay, from Chorley, in Lancashire, who set up the campaign Doing It For Dylan, following the tragic death of her 13-year-old son. Dylan Ramsay drowned in the summer of 2011 as he tried to swim back to safety after he jumped into the water at Hill Top Quarry, near Chorley. Despite being a strong swimmer, he quickly got into difficulties and drowned when his body went into shock because of the plummeting water temperature. He was a young, fit and healthy boy who was a strong swimmer, yet he struggled and was unable to reach safety when he jumped into the quarry. Since then, Re-becca has worked tirelessly to raise awareness and to educate young people about the dangers of swimming in open water. Working on her own, she has toured the country giving talks in schools and to youth groups without any external support. This was a hard-hitting assembly but very timely ahead of the summer holidays and warmer weather. If you require any fur-ther information please do not hesitate to contact Mr Wain-man in school.

Academy Conferences Lectures - Key Stage 4

This week around a hundred external pupils sat alongside a group of our Year 10s to hear a series of lectures and debates delivered by experienced gifted educators Julie Arliss and Dr Andrew Pinsent from Academy Conferences. Lecture themes this year were very topical issues, delivered in such a way as to stretch and challenge the thinking of those pupils present. Lectures were based around questions such as 'Who am I and what can I hope for?', 'What is knowledge?', and 'Do animals have rights?'. Oxbridge interview questions were also dis-cussed and pupils were encouraged to consider how they might answer such questions as 'Do you believe that statues move and how would you justify this belief?'

Academy Conferences offer their programme in a limited number of places during the course of the year, and we are very fortunate that this is the second time in the last three years that we have served as a venue for them. GS
