    ADVENT CONCERT

The Fifth Annual Advent Concert featuring the OLOM Chancel Choir will present the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah this Advent Season. Bring the whole family for an hour-long, candle-lit, musical event which includes the ever popular “Hallelujah Chorus” among other classic features.

Messiah is an oratorio composed in 1741 by George Frideric Handel. Handel uses a scriptural text to tell the events of the life of Jesus in three parts: Prophesy and Birth; Passion and Resurrection; and the Promise of Eternal Life. Since its premier, the oratorio has risen in popularity, becoming one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music. It begins with prophetic promises of the birth of the Christ, many from the Old Testament book of Isaiah. The actual birth of Jesus is revealed, and then Messiah narrates the experience of the shepherds outside of Bethlehem, completing the birth story.

Memorial GiftsAt the death of a loved one, many choose in lieu of flowers to encourage friends and family to make a donation to a special charity or cause. Our Lady of Mercy has nourished the spiritual life of so many parishioners and those throughout the Diocese who come here. A Memorial Gift to our Traditions for Tomorrow Building Campaign is a wonderful way to acknowledge the lives of our beloved dead with a gift of loving generosity to the church that has been such a spiritual home. Ms. Deanie Smith can discuss ways for you to remember your loved one. Consider adding a planned gift in your last will and testament to remember Our Lady of Mercy.

GARDEN OF PEACEDear Parishioners and Friends,

I am very pleased that many are already responding so positively to the Columbarium Garden now in the pre-construction phase. I want to remind you that for those who have researched costs for cremation resting places - the Mercy Columbarium Garden is an incredibly good deal and significant cost savings. I encourage you to make your appointment now with Ms. Deanie Smith. Post-construction pricing will certainly rise as the Mercy Garden will become a more and more desired sacred place for the placing of cremains. Pre-arranging these details is a great gift to your spouses, children, and families. Make your appointment now.

May God Bless Our Beloved Dead!

THANK YOU MARTHA WELLS WITH MUCH GRATITUDE!Our Lady of Mercy Parish expresses heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to Mrs. Martha Wells who retires as Adoration Chapel Coordinator after 15 years of outstanding volunteer service.

Martha’s leadership and commitment to the Mercy Adoration Chapel is an outstanding example of devotion to Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration and the witness to the power of prayer here at Mercy.

There are no words to adequately thank Martha for her diligence, attentiveness, and meticulous care in the smooth operation of the Adoration Chapel.

Mrs. Michelle Schroeder who recently wrote The Handy Little Guide - Adoration, a number one selling booklet on Adoration, will succeed Martha as head coordinator. She will continue to be supported by the wonderful Chapel shift captains: Ken Reed / Diane Owens / Susan Jones / Adrian Gunther / Gary Bertrand

God Bless all of our Adorers!

The Chapel cannot remain open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day without committed adorers. Mercy was the first Perpetual Adoration Chapel in our Diocese beginning under the pastorate of Msgr. Andrew Frey over 35 years ago. Since then, there have been 11 other Adoration Chapels opened in other parishes throughout our Diocese. Our Lady of Mercy Chapel remains the only 24 hour Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel.

May God Bless Martha Wells for an outstanding job as Chapel Coordinator!

Campus Safety As the holiday season approaches, please do not leave your purse or any valuables visible on the seats or floor of your car. Place all of your valuables in the trunk of your vehicle in order to avoid anyone who might be tempted to something the Lord would not want them to do. It is recommended that you do not give cash to anyone soliciting money. This only encourages repeat behavior and is somewhat fearful to those in the Adoration Chapel and the elderly. If you want to support the needy, then give to the St. Vincent de Paul Society where your generosity will surely help the poor and hungry.

    SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION

THE LIGHT IS ON FOR YOU!“Prepare the way for the Lord,” cried John the Baptist from the desert to the people of his time. As Catholics, we are given the opportunity to heed St. John’s call by readying ourselves for the Lord’s coming during this Advent Season through the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Several churches in our diocese, including Our Lady of Mercy, offer this special opportunity to receive the Sacrament by hosting Reconciliation Services through “The Light Is On For You.”

Have you been putting off going to Confession? When was the last time you received the Sacrament of Reconciliation? This prayer is for you:

Lord, help me genuinely accept that You have taken all my past - all sin I have committed or accusation against me.

Since You do not condemn me, help me renew my thinking & not condemn myself. Rather, I want to live in the Joy, Peace, & Freedom You have purchased for me by Your death and resurrection in Jesus’ name.

    Amen

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPEIn 1531, The Blessed Lady appeared to Juan Diego, an Indian, in the mountains near Guadalupe, Mexico. Diego was told by Mary to go to the local Bishop and request that a church be constructed there in her honor. The Bishop claimed he needed a sign from God so the request was refused. Mary once again appeared to Diego and told him to pick some roses from the mountain top. Diego, puzzled by the appeal since it was winter and no roses were growing at the time, went as instructed and indeed found the roses as Mary told him and placed them in his tilma. Upon his second visit to the Bishop, Diego opened the tilma and the roses fell to the floor. In their place was the beautiful picture of Our Lady which was “made part” of the tilma.

She is depicted as an Indian woman who is expecting a child. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patroness of Mexico and of the pro-life movement.

The large Basilica in Guadalupe is the most visited Marian shrine in the world. We will celebrate her Feast Day at the 8:00 am and Noon Masses on Wednesday, December 12th.

    THE SEASON OF GIVING

In this Holy Season of the Savior’s birth, I cannot think of a more beautiful and holy place to worship our Lord Jesus Christ than here at Our Lady of Mercy. Our parish provides tremendous opportunities to celebrate the Sacraments of Holy Mass and Confession.

Our strong witness to the power of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament in the Adoration Chapel, and our commitment to St. Vincent de Paul and our outreach to the poor and needy, truly are a bright light in a world that can seem very dark.

Our Lady of Mercy functions not only as a vibrant and active church family but also as a shrine for the City of Baton Rouge and our Diocese.

The doors of Mercy are open to everyone. That is why one of the best charities that you can support during the Christmas Season with your end of the year financial giving, is our own parish. So many people are affected in a good and positive way when you support your church family. If you love the legacy of Mercy and want to continue the light of Christ shining so brightly, I encourage your continued faithful giving in this season of offering our generous heart to God.

God Bless Mercy’s faithful families and may the Light of Christ shine more brightly through us.

    Happy Advent!
