2. Job DescriptionAs a Medical Technologist, or Med Tech, there aremany things they do on a daily basis in a laboratoriesat a hospital. Med Techs are responsible for testingblood that is sent in before a transfusion or after it hasbeen donated before it goes into the blood bank.Their job is to stay in the lab and test blood foranything harmful. In some cases a MedicalTechnologist will even test urine samples for anydrugs. 3. Education RequiredIt is actually very simple to become a Specialist inBlood Bank Technology(SBB). All you really need iscertification from the American Society for ClinicalPathology Board of Certification. Also you shouldhave at least a bachelors degree or an associatesdegree in medical technology. 4. Money, Money, Money!The average salary for a medical technologist... Bench Techs: $50,000 Supervisor: $60,000 Manager: $70,000 5. Past JobsHere is the number of jobs as a Medical Technologistin 2010: 93,970 jobs in the United States 6. Job OutlookAll over the nation, the percentage of job opportunitesas a medical technologist is average. In Louisianaespecially the job opportuinites is above averagethan other states. 7. My EnvironmentMost Blood Bank Specialist work many facilities likeprivate hospital blood banks, transfusion services,community blood centers, or university-affiliated bloodcenters. All of these medical technologist work in alaboratory. 8. What Do I Have to Do?To become a SBB you need certification and abachelors in Medical Technology. Also a SBB mustbe able to complete certain tasks like collecting andprocessing blood. We must be able to preform routineand specialized blood tests. Also we have to be ableto figure out a patients blood type by moleculartesting. Our job is to support the doctor and theirpatients in case of an emergency, transfusion,surgery, and so on. The blood must be tested to besure it is compatible and safe(no diseases). 9. Similar OccupationThere are several jobs similar to a medicaltechnologist. Such as: Neurodiagnostic Technologist Cytotechnologist Forensic Science Technicians Chemical Technicians And more.... 10. Career ClusterAs a Medical Technologist (specialist in blood banktechnology), my career could be in two careerclusters. Health Science (biotechnology research anddevelopment) Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics(laboratory and testing services) 11. Work ScheduleA Specialist in Blood Bank Technology work normalbusiness hours. However, it is likely to workweekends and be on call for an emergency like anatural disaster or serious accidents that require afast demand of blood. Usually a medical technologistwork forty or more hours a week. 12. Why???I have always been interested in health science. Itamazes me how a tiny platelet can save a life. Thatswhat I really want to do. I want to make an impact onthis earth and help people. I could have been a nurseor a doctor but in reality they would not be able to dotheir job if it was not for the blood specialist doing thelittle important work. Were their support system andthey need us. I could not picture a better job thanhelping save lives everyday. 13. Thank You!
