Membership is available to everyone whether youlive locally, visit the Costa del Sol and Costa de laLuz regularly or simply just want to take advantageof the many savings we offer.

Save every time you play

Over the years we have developed a very goodrelationship with the majority of courses and havebeen able to negotiate superb green fee discountsfor our members when they show theirmembership card.

Member’s tournaments

We hold at least one monthly tournament wherethe winner receives a crystal trophy, along with a 130 Euros pro shop voucher. At the same time,we have our “player of the year” rankingscompetition, which is based on the results for theperiod 1st August to 31st July of each year. Thiscompetition is sponsored by Estepona Golf Cluband the overall winner receives a year’s freemembership, valued at over 1400 Euros. The goodnews for our members is those who participateregularly in these tournaments will have a verygood chance of playing at Valderrama in latesummer, as the top ten in our rankingsautomatically receive an invitation to play in theprestigious Med Golf Masters. To qualify, a membermust play in at least five qualifying tournamentsand the rankings are based on the average of thebest five recorded scores.

Insurance

Med Golf HandicapINTERNATIONAL

If you are not a member of a club and have difficulty

setting up and maintaining a handicap then Med

Golf’s handicap service is just what you need.

Remember this is included in your Med Golf

membership where you can also take advantage of

all our concessions, discounts and insurance.

What do you need to do?a) Naturally you will need to be a member of

Med Golf and details of how to join are on

page 6 or visit our website

b) On becoming a member we will require three

score cards from any 18 hole golf course

which must be signed by the player and scorer.

On receipt of the score cards we will send an

internationally recognised handicap certificate

to your home address.

c) Before the end of the initial three month

period we will need to see from you a further

three score cards with one being your best

score. Based on the scores your handicap is

adjusted and an up to date certificate issued.

You must remember to do this quarterly to

maintain your official handicap.

HANDICAPGUIDE

Ground UnderRepair (G.U.R.):Blue stakes or lines.

The stakes or lines defining the portion ofthe course as G.U.R. are deemed to beinside the G.U.R.

Material piled for removal and a hole madeby a green keeper, even if not so marked(i.e. blue stakes), is deemed G.U.R.

Note: - Grass cuttings or other materialleft on the course, which have beenabandoned and are not intended to bemoved, are not G.U.R. unless so marked.

Local rules may prohibit play from G.U.R.

Relief from G.U.R.The ball lying within the defined area ofG.U.R. may be lifted, cleaned anddropped within one club length, notnearer the hole (in any direction), withoutpenalty.

Hazards (bunkers or water hazards)Bunkers: - A bunker is a hazard consistingof a prepared area of ground, often ahollow, from which turf or soil has beenremoved and replaced with sand or thelike.

The margin only extends verticallydownwards. Grass covered groundbordering or within a bunker is not part ofthe bunker.Bunker play: - A player is entitled to placehis feet firmly, in taking his stance, butshall not build a stance. Before making a

stroke at the ball a player shall not,

1. Test the condition/depth of sand.2. Ground the club.3. Smooth out the surface.4. Remove loose impediments

(unless local rules permit).

Penalty for breach of Rule (13.4)Match play: - Loss of hole.Stroke play: - Two strokes.Unplayable ball: - If the unplayable ball liesin a bunker, the player may proceed underclauses a, b, or c. If the player elects toproceed under clauses b or c, the ballmust be dropped in the bunker.

If the player deems his ball unplayable, heshall, under a penalty of one stroke,

a. Play a ball as nearly as possible to thespot where the original ball was lastplayed (Rule 20.5) or

b. Drop a ball within two club lengths ofthe spot where the ball lies, but notnearer the hole, or

c. Drop a ball, behind the point where theball lay, keeping that point directlybetween the flag and the spot on whichthe ball is dropped, as far back as thebunker permits.

Note: - the ball may be cleaned whenlifted under this rule.

Lateral Water HazardRed stakes or lines

A “lateral water hazard” is a water hazard or partof, that is so situated it is not possible or isdeemed (by the Committee) to be impracticable todrop a ball behind it.

Stakes and lines defining the margin of the hazardare deemed to be in the hazard.

All ground or water within the margin of thehazard is part of the hazard.

The margin of the hazard extends verticallyupwards and downwards.

Relief from a lateral water hazard.If a ball lies in or is lost in a lateral water hazard, aplayer may in addition to the options of generalrelief from a water hazard, elect to proceed asfollows, under a penalty of one stroke.

a. Drop a ball outside the hazard, withintwo club lengths, not nearer the hole, ata point where the original ball lastcrossed the margin of the hazard, or

b. Drop a ball at a point on the oppositemargin of the hazard, equidistance fromthe hole, within two club lengths of thehazard not nearer the hole.

Play from a water hazard or lateralwater hazard.If the player elects to play from within the hazard,before making the shot a player must not.

a. Test the conditions of the hazard.b. Ground the club.c. Touch or move loose impediments.

Water HazardsYellow stakes or lines

A “water hazard” is any sea, lake, pond, river orany other open watercourse, whether or notcontaining water.

Relief from a water hazard.If a ball lies in or is lost in a water hazard (whetherthe ball lies in water or not), the player may undera penalty of one stroke,

a. Play a ball as nearly as possible at thespot from which the original ball waslast played (Rule 20.50) or

b. Drop a ball behind the water hazard (notnearer the hole), keeping the point atwhich the original ball last crossed themargin of the hazard, directly betweenthe flag and the spot on which the ball is dropped. There is no limit as to how farback the ball may be dropped.

Out of BoundsWhite stakes, lines or boundary fences

“Out of bounds” is ground on which play isprohibited. The stakes, lines and fences definingout of bounds are deemed to be out of bounds.

A ball is out of bounds when all of it lies out ofbounds. The out of bounds line extends verticallyupwards and downwards.

A player may stand out of bounds to play a balllying within bounds.

Situated in the heart of Western Andalusia, ArcosGardens is a championship course which is versatileenough to challenge the top class golfer but is stilluser friendly to allow the handicap golfer to enjoy theirround. There are wide forgiving fairways but there is apremium on accuracy. Jerez, Seville and Gibraltarairports are within easy reach and with so many othercourses in the immediate vicinity, this is an ideal spotto enjoy a peaceful, golfing break. Directions: From the AP 4, take the exit for the A 382 Arcos de la Frontera. Follow the road for approx. 22 kms until you see the exit Arcos de la Frontera Oeste, which will bring you in to the town of Arcos and then follow the signs to the golf course.

2 Sherry Golf Club Tel: (+34) 956 088330

Sherry golf course was designed according to newAmerican concepts. The wide fairways and expansivegreens make it a luxury as far as the playing area isconcerned. The course takes advantage of the naturalcontours, with each hole having its own identity andwater hazards come in to play. Several amateur andprofessional championships are held here, the mostnotable being the PGA European Qualifying School.However, it is also very accessible for all handicapsand one that has to be played if you are in the area.

Directions: The course is very easy to locate and is 1.5km from Jerez at km 642 on the Jerez to Puerto Santa Maria Autovia.It is just 5 mins. from Jerez airport.CO

Situated in a prestigious residential area, the coursecombines elements of British links with small anddeep bunkers, curving fairways and large opengreens, harnessed with parkland, seven lakes and anabundance of trees. It fits in to the landscape and is agood test of golf for all abilities. It is a must to playwhen you are in the area.

3 Costa Ballena de Golf Tel: (+34) 956 841300/941330

The golf club is part of the Costa Ballena complexwhich is an exclusive resort for tourism, leisure andsports and only 30 kms from Jerez airport. There area total of 27 holes, 18 of which are championship andthey are fairly flat making it ideal for all handicapgolfers. Part of the course runs alongside the Atlantic,giving you the feel of links golf, with the rest beingparkland. A very attractive course in the lovely area of PuertoSanta Maria where there is an abundance of sea foodrestaurants. The course, which has ambitions one dayof hosting championships, has its own identity and isa good test of golf for all standards. You will beimpressed by the huge extension of water that totalsover 33,000 square metres! An example of yet anothernice course to play when you are in the area.

One of golf’s hidden treasures, this superb course is amust to play if you are in the area. Take your time toappreciate the beauty of the surroundings and qualityof this fair but challenging course. Always inimmaculate condition, it is one of the undiscoveredsecrets of Spanish golf in a peaceful part of Andalusia.It is quite unique and considered locally as one of thefinest golf courses in Europe. There is a largeconcession on green fees when tee times arebooked through Med Golf.

Directions: Take the N340 road to Cadiz and at exactly km 42.5 you will find the entrance to the golf course and theMontenmedio estate.

Golf Novo Sancti Petri is fast becoming the area’s most populardestination for visiting golfers. There are 54 holes of pure golfingpleasure situated just off the white sands of the Atlantic. Each ofthe three courses offers beautiful combinations, with lakes, olivetrees and undulating greens always a challenge. The brisk oceanbreeze can also be a factor and make playing just that little bitmore difficult. The courses can get busy, so book yourguaranteed tee time through Med Golf. One of the jewels of the Costa de la Luz, thischampionship course is always a pleasure to play. It issimply a superb setting making it is easy to enjoy yourgolf and the course is always immaculately presented.There are some spectacular holes and stunning viewsfrom the raised tees. There are two courses to enjoy at Alcaidesa, the “Links”and “Heathlands”. Both are very popular, with theoriginal course being the closest to an authentic linkscourse in Andalusia and the new course adds a differentchallenge, particularly if the sea breeze is stiff. There arespectacular views of Gibraltar, the Mediterranean andMoroccan coast and well worth a visit if you are in thearea. Both courses are a good test of golf and enjoyableto play. There are two championship courses at San Roquewhich need no introduction, with the original coursebeing used for the European PGA tour qualifyingschool and the new course the Spanish Open. Bothare maintained in excellent condition and are verypopular courses with visiting golfers as they representa fair challenge in a superb setting. The prestigious championship course at Valderramaneeds no introduction and is considered one ofEurope’s finest. It is set amongst a cork oak forest andalthough the fairways are quite flat the greens arealways very challenging. Built to the full USGA specification and the qualitystandards of the famous desert courses of Arizonaand California, Desert Springs was the first desertcourse in Europe. The fairways are generous toaccommodate all standards with the landscape andviews very absorbing. Directions: From the Almeria-Murcia motorway, take the exit to Cuevas de Almanzara. After 6 kms, turn right following the roadthrough Vera. After 3 kms there is a crossroad and turn left to Palomares. The course is 5 kms from there and signpposteed.

Set adjacent to the beach, the original course is theoldest in Spain and is a combination of links andparkland with wide fairways although the water hazardsand strategically placed trees add to the difficulty. It is anice place to play golf and a further 9 holes have recentlybeen added but this is mainly for juniors and beginners.The course has significantly improved under newmanagement. There are great views of the landing anddeparting aircraft from Malaga airport and many visitorslike to play this on their last day as the airport is so near.Why not let Med Golf book your last tee time?
